Filming has begun in Edmonton on Smudge the Blades, a sports dramedy from writer-director Cody Lightning. The feature centers on the Treaty 6 Blades, an under-18 Indigenous hockey team facing their last season in a rough northern Alberta league.

New additions to the cast include Ed Helms (The Hangover), Paulina Alexis (Reservation Dogs), and Jana Schmieding (Rutherford Falls). Lightning stars as Willie Gladue, a Zamboni driver who finds himself behind the bench as the team’s unexpected coach. Schmieding plays a hockey mom who becomes his love interest.

A trio of performers have joined the cast of sports feature Smudge the Blades from writer-director Cody Lightning.

Spotted Fawn Productions will produce an animated series based on its film, “Inkwo for When the Starving Return,” which was directed by the company’s owner, Amanda Strong, and plays at Sundance this week.

Strong, who is Métis, will be showrunner for the new six-part limited series. She has directed episodes of the PBS Kids show “Molly of Denali” and previously received the Sundance Native Lab Fellowship.

Thirty-four performers across diverse backgrounds received Primetime Emmy nominations today which is even with last year when the Television Academy recognized the same number of nominees in the acting and reality hosting categories.

This year’s count remains above the 2019 low of 26 non-Caucasian actors and reality hosts, yet still far from 2021’s record 49 nominees.

FX’s breakthrough — and thoroughly unique — comedy Reservation Dogs struggled for three seasons to find an audience before creators Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi decided to end the series in 2023.

Fortunately, the series got its due Wednesday; the single-camera comedy that follows the exploits of Elora Danan (Devery Jacobs), Bear Smallhill (D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai), Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis) and Cheese (Lane Factor) in rural Oklahoma earned its first-ever nomination in the best comedy category while star Woon-a-Tai nabbed one for best actor in a comedy.

“I swear I didn’t watch [the nominations],” Harjo told Deadline. “I was cleaning my house and I was talking to my brother. All of a sudden I got like 50 texts in a row and I was like, something happened and I remembered that it was the announcement morning. It’s been crazy.”

Nominations for the 29th annual Critics Choice Awards were revealed Tuesday morning, and there were some surprises.

The Morning Show Season 3 towers above the competition with the most nominations, netting six total.

It is closely followed by Succession, which managed five.

Abbott Elementary (ABC), The Bear (FX), Beef (Netflix), Lessons In Chemistry (Apple TV+), Loki (Disney+), Reservation Dogs (FX), and A Small Light (National Geographic) scored four nods apiece.

The 2024 Critics Choice Awards TV nominations were just revealed!

The awards show – which also include movie nominations that have yet to be released – will take place at the on Sunday (January 14) on The CW with Chelsea Handler acting as host.

AppleTV+’s The Morning Show garnered the most nominations this year with a total of six, including Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon earning nods in the Best Actress category.

HBO’s Succession earned the second highest amount of nominations with a total of 5.

The Critics Choice Association announced the TV nominees for the 29th Annual Critics Choice Awards on Tuesday — and Season 3 of Apple TV+’s The Morning Show leads the pack with a whopping six nominations.

The haul includes a nod for Best Drama Series and individual recognition for Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Billy Crudup, Karen Pittman and Season 3 newcomer Nicole Beharie.

With six nominations, “The Morning Show” received the most TV nods for the 29th annual Critics Choice Awards, including best drama series. Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon are both nominated in the best actress category, with Billy Crudup, Nicole Beharie and Karen Pittman also earning acting nods for their supporting roles.

Also nominated for best drama series, “Succession” received five nominations. Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong both earned best actor nominations, with Sarah Snook garnering a best actress nod. Matthew MacFadyen was also nominated for in the supporting actor category.

“A Small Light,” “Abbott Elementary,” “Beef,” “Lessons In Chemistry,” “Loki,” “Reservation Dogs” and “The Bear” tied with four nominations each.

Hosted by Chelsea Handler, the Critics Choice Awards gala will broadcast live on The CW on Jan. 14, 2024 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Et. Nominations for the film categories will be announced Dec. 13.

The Critics Choice Association (Cca) has announced its television nominees for the 2024 Critics Choice Awards.

HBO/Max scored 23 nominations in total, while Netflix received 21, and Apple TV+ and FX got 16.

Nominations for the Critics Choice film categories will be announced on Dec. 13. The Critics Choice Awards will air on The CW on Jan. 14 and will be hosted by Chelsea Handler.

When writer and director Sterlin Harjo was 5 years old, his mother lost a baby. “He was only alive for a few hours,” Harjo recalls. “I think at 5, when you know you lost a sibling, it’s very confusing. You don’t know how to process that.”

The loss of his brother is something that’s never left him.

“I remember, through the grief and everything, going to school and a Ta asked me how I was doing. It was really the first time I’d been asked that, because I didn’t know the kid,” Harjo tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It was just heavy loss that I felt. I didn’t know then; I’d never experienced that. I know that’s permeated and has been a part of my art and storytelling since.”

With the premiere of its final episode, FX’s Reservation Dogs has officially been sent off that good way. The season 3 finale, titled “Dig,” is filled with indelible moments that neatly wrap up three superb seasons and prepare the titular Rez Dogs for a glorious future to come.

As the town of Okern, Oklahoma gathers in the local church to pay their respects to departed Old Man Fixico (Richard Ray Whitman), several well-wishers assemble around the medicine man’s casket. Many television shows try to be about community. Hell, one series tried so hard that it violated Seo best practices to just go ahead and name itself Community. I would wager, however, that no TV program ever has better understood the concept of community, nor articulated what it means more effectively than FX’s Reservation Dogs.

The series, which just finished its three-season run on Hulu, began as a simple comedy following four Indigenous teens in their small reservation town of Okern, Oklahoma. Just as those teens – Elora (Devery Jacobs), Bear (D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai), Cheese (Lane Factor), and Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis) – grew to realize that their world was much bigger than pilfered potato chips and petty rivalries, so too did Reservation Dogs grow.

Throughout its richly-realized third season, Reservation Dogs has carefully and empathetically communicated how little the youth sometimes realize that they need their elders.

Reservation Dogs season 3 may have aired its finale, but co-creator Sterlin Harjo is optimistic about the show's future, with plans for a feature film and spinoffs. The show's finale felt like the perfect closer according to Harjo, and the series has made television stronger with its talented young ensemble and underrepresented stories. Reservation Dogs has attracted A-list actors for cameos and may continue in some form, potentially focusing on supporting characters and expanding the universe.

Bear is meditating on nothing less than the impermanence of life, which is also what Elora wants to discuss. Specifically, she has to tell Bear that she’s exiting their hometown, departing Okern and going to college. She knows, though, that Bear’s mother (Sarah Podemski’s Rita) has recently told him she’s taking a job in Oklahoma City. Everybody is leaving Bear, and Elora worries about how her friend will take the news.

“Reservation Dogs” ended its three-season run on Wednesday with a funeral — but also with a lot of joy. In bringing almost all of the show’s characters into one place for one final gathering, co-creator Sterlin Harjo said his goal was to show how “Reservation Dogs” was much bigger than just the kids at its heart.

“It’s not just for kids on the rez,” Harjo told Variety. “It is their whole community. And we see that by going back into the past with some of the elders. The FX series consists of some of the best TV writing, I have seen in years and the cast of the series seems to be doing it justice. There are many dark and depressing moments in Reservation Dogs and all of them are handled beautifully. The only bad thing in the series is that it is ending too soon.

Concepts like spirit guides, spirit quests, and spirit animals are often memetic touchstones for crunchy white Americans looking for a way to make a psychedelic mushroom trip on a Tuesday sound more profound than it really is.

One of the best aspects of Reservation Dogs, FX’s brilliant dramedy about an indigenous community in Oklahoma, is how it both reclaims and refines the pop cultural depiction of Native American spirits. There are several ghosts, apparitions, and wayward souls wandering around Rez Dogs version of the American West. Sometimes the show satirizes the notion of spirit guides – mostly through the use of Bear’s ethereal companion William Knifeman, who is supposed to be teaching the boy worthwhile lessons but who really just seems to want a young friend.
