Everyone's favorite queer pirate rom-com, Our Flag Means Death, is back for a raucous Season 2 if the teaser trailers were any indication: love letters in a bottle, pirate queens, and wedding objections among them. When the Season 1 finale left the rag-tag crew of the Revenge scattered across the high seas after the English Navy attacked the ship, one thing was for certain: the friendships and romances fostered on deck under co-captains Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) and Blackbeard/Edward Teach (Taika Waititi) would never be the same.
The first three episodes of Season 2, released on October 5, make more than clear to returning fans that this season will be all about exploring what it means to open yourself back up to love, finding community, and committing to the people around you. With new episodes premiering on Max every Thursday until October 26, Cbr is your place for the weekly recap of new episodes.

Our Flag Means Death creator David Jenkins previewed where the show's central romance will go in Season 2.
The show's first season climaxed with Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) and Ed "Blackbeard" Teach (Taika Waititi) confessing their feelings for each other, only to split apart due to Stede's insecurity. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jenkins discussed where the second season finds the star-crossed pirates. "It's interesting to see Stede have to figure out how to reapproach this guy that he really hurt," he explained. "That's everybody who's ever been in a relationship where they had to repair it and apologize to their partner and try to figure out a way forward. And then [we'll] see what happened to Blackbeard in the wake of his heartbreak." Jenkins added, "They're both pretty immature in their own way. The course of this season is: Can they find their way to maybe a more mature form of love?...

Our Flag Means Death will conclude with season 3, bringing Stede and Ed's voyages to a close. Season 2 will see a divided crew and potentially focus on the crew being apart on their own vessels. Despite disappointment over the show potentially ending sooner, viewers can anticipate season 2 to deliver more developments on Stede and Ed's story before the end.
Our Flag Means Death creator David Jenkins confirms that season 3 will be the show's last. The historical romantic comedy follows the crew of the Revenge, as ambitious pirate wannabe Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) leaves behind his comfortable, high-class life for the high seas and crosses paths with the dreaded Blackbeard (Taika Waititi). After season 1 received acclaim and gathered a strong fanbase, the series was renewed for a season 2 that is set to air in October 2023.

Our Flag Means Death welcomed fans back aboard The Revenge with first-look photos at the romantic comedy's highly anticipated second season. Still, one notable absence could spell doom for Stede Bonnet and Blackbeard's potential reconciliation. Thrown overboard by Taika Waititi's Kraken at the end of Season 1, Nathan Foad's Lucius will need to resurface for the show's central duo to have any hope of regaining their sea legs.
Though Our Flag Means Death teased new pirates such as Rubio Qian's Susan and Minnie Driver's Anne Bonney, Lucius, and Vico Ortiz's Jim Jimenez's fate remains open-ended in their first batch of Season 2 photos. Unlike Jim, Lucius was presumed dead at the end of Season 1, but fans speculate that the sly scribe hasn't drawn his last in flagrante portrait. This hope is particularly crucial for audiences invested in Stede and Ed rekindling their romance, as the Gentleman...

HBO Max’s queer pirate romcom, Our Flag Means Death, has become a runaway hit. Fans have embraced this diverse cast of pirates as they navigate the Golden Age of Piracy in an absurdist comedy that wrestles with serious issues. The show asks whether it is possible to experience self fulfillment by rejecting an oppressive society that traumatizes people with toxic definitions of masculinity and power. And there’s Taika Waititi as Blackbeard. Clearly this is the adventure of a lifetime.
In the pilot episode, self-professed “Gentleman Pirate” Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) proclaims, “Traditionally piracy’s a culture of abuse: floggings, keelhaulings. And my thought is why? And also: what if it weren’t like that?”
Stede’s question doesn’t just get to the heart of the show, it gets to the heart of activism. Real world activists pose the question, “why is there so much suffering and what...

[Note: With the film now out on DVD, here’s a reposting of our review of revenge thriller Nacro Sub]
Revenge thrillers have become increasingly popular in the last few years. John Wick seems to have been the most successful franchise in the genre but ever since Taken became a hit they have been made again and again. Any older actor, even if only with one or two hits on their IMDb page has given this small genre a go (Liam Neeson has made at least a dozen of what is essentially the same film). So it’s perhaps no surprise that smaller, indie films are having a go at this too. With that comes Narco Sub, the story about a guy who has to kill to save his family.
