It's safe to say that Hollywood star Samuel L. Jackson has more than a handful of memorable roles. From playing a very unlucky member of Hammond's crew in Jurassic Park to giving life to the Bible verse-spewing villain Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction. His career speaks for itself, but that doesn't mean he hasn't had a fair share of less successful roles. Nevertheless, the MCU star revealed that a long time ago, he got a key piece of advice from his colleagueBruce Willis that prepared him for whenever his movies were bad, and he lacked money to pay the bills.
Willis turned 70 a few days ago, and his friends and colleagues celebrated his birthday. Jackson, his co-star in movies like Unbreakable, and Bonnie Bedelia, his romantic counterpart in the first two Die Hard movies, took to Vanity Fair to honor the action star. Samuel L. Jackson first played Nick Fury in 2008's Iron Man, showing up for a surprise post-credits scene that set the stage for The Avengers to follow in 2012. The legendary actor has since become an MCU mainstay, appearing in countless film and television projects for Marvel Studios.
Recent years haven't delivered the best Nick Fury stories, though Jackson remains at the top of his game. Avengers: Doomsday seems to be the likely next destination for the screen icon, though only time will tell how much longer he will continue playing the former S.H.I.E.L.D. Director.
Talking to Vanity Fair to mark Bruce Willis' 70th birthday, Jackson revealed the advice his Unbreakable and Glass co-star gave him shortly after they shared the screen in Die Hard With a Vengeance.

Samuel L. Jackson recalled some priceless advice he received from Bruce Willis while they were shooting Die Hard With A Vengeance in 1994.
“He told me, ‘Hopefully you’ll be able to find a character that, when you make bad movies and they don’t make any money, you can always go back to this character everybody loves,” Jackson shared in an interview with Vanity Fair celebrating Willis’ 70th birthday . “He said, ‘Arnold’s got Terminator. Sylvester’s got Rocky, Rambo. I’ve got John McClane.’ I’m like, ‘Oh, okay.’ And it didn’t occur to me until I got that Nick Fury role—and I had a nine-picture deal to be Nick Fury—that, Oh, I’m doing what Bruce said. I’ve got this character now.”

I’m here to talk to you about Nakatomi Plaza…Samuel L. Jackson and Bruce Willis shared credits on numerous movies, whether they appeared onscreen together or not: Pulp Fiction, M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable and Glass, National Lampoon’s Loaded Weapon 1…But the dynamic is in full force in 1995’s Die Hard with a Vengeance. And it was here that Willis gave advice that inadvertently led to a fan-favorite character: Nick Fury.
Jackson recently recalled working with Willis on Die Hard with a Vengeance, joining John McClane as Zeus, an electrician who gets pulled into the hero’s attempts to thwart Simon Peter Gruber. During that time – in which they presumably also bonded over the power of delivering a good “motherf*cker” on the big screen – Willis told his co-star that franchise characters would be the path to solidifying his reputation. “He told me, ‘Hopefully you...

Trap was one of my favorite movies of last year. Every moment of the film was riveting, watching as a serial killer and his daughter tried to escape a sting operation. Unfortunately, not everyone agreed, with some people finding it too off-putting and the Academy members not having any room in their hearts to nominate it for their precious Oscars.
M. Night Shyamalan, director of Trap, was shut out of Hollywood for a while. He had to fund Split himself after backlash from an admittedly disappointing streak of films, which included The Last Airbender. However, Trap is one of his best, and I think it's time to admit that.

There were certainly some exciting thrillers in 2024. It was interesting watching Naomi Ackie escape rich male abusers in Blink Twice, or Taron Egerton channel John McClane in Carry-On. That being said, I easily...

Sometimes you should take your friend’s advice.
In a Vanity Fair story honoring Bruce Willis’ 70th birthday, Samuel L. Jackson reflected on the advice his Die Hard With a Vengeance co-star Willis gave him while they were shooting the film in the ’90s.
“He told me, ‘Hopefully you’ll be able to find a character that, when you make bad movies and they don’t make any money, you can always go back to this character everybody loves,'” Jackson remembers. “He said, ‘Arnold’s got Terminator. Sylvester’s got Rocky, Rambo. I’ve got John McClane.’”
Jackson recalled thinking “Oh, Ok,” at the time, and it wasn’t until later when he landed a role in the MCU that he understood. “It didn’t occur to me until I got that Nick Fury role — and I had a nine-picture deal to be Nick Fury — that, oh, I’m doing what Bruce said.

In honor of “Die Hard” star Bruce Willis‘ 70th birthday on Wednesday, Samuel L. Jackson revealed the insightful career advice the actor gave him on the set of 1995’s “Die Hard With a Vengeance.”
Willis and Jackson famously both starred in Quentin Tarantino’s generation-defining 1994 hit, “Pulp Fiction.” It was not until Jackson was cast as the character Zeus in “Die Hard With a Vengeance,” though, that he and Willis actually got to share scenes together onscreen. While making the blockbuster, Jackson says Willis gave him an important piece of career advice.

Demi Moore celebrated Bruce Willis’ 70th birthday with a gallery on Instagram of current family photos. The heartfelt images included Moore and Willis posing for the camera and their daughters lovingly embracing their father in a few candid shots. The photos provided fans with a rare glimpse at Willis, who has remained out of the spotlight since retirement from acting in 2022 due to an aphasia diagnosis. A year later, Willis’ family announced his disorder had progressed into frontotemporal dementia.
Willis and Moore were married for 13 years from 1987 to 2000 and have three children together: Rumer, Scout and Tallulah. The couple have remained close friends since their divorce and Moore continues to see Willis weekly, she revealed last fall during her awards press tour for “The Substance.”

Today, Samuel L. Jackson is one of the most famous and beloved actors. He is also extremely prolific, having appeared in numerous movies, and even franchises, among which are several of Quentin Tarantino’s films, the Star Wars franchise (where he played Mace Windu), and the MCU, where he is still playing Nick Fury.
The latter is related – in a very indirect and odd way – to an older role Jackson played back in 1995. It is the role of electrician Zeus Carver in Die Hard with a Vengeance, where he became the unlikely partner of Bruce Willis’ John McClane in the latter’s pursuit of Simon Peter Gruber, played by Jeremy Irons.

John Lithgow is no stranger to playing villains. The actor has played a number of standout roles over the course of his fifty-plus-year career, particularly excelling and gaining notoriety for his memorable supporting characters. In addition to providing the voice of the villainous Lord Farquad in Shrek (2001), Lithgow played villain characters in Ricochet (1991), Bombshell (2019), Blow Out (1981), Raising Cane (1992), and the Dexter TV show. He also appeared as a larger-than-life villain in a 1993 movie starring Sylvester Stallone.
Stallone has been a fixture of the action genre for decades, getting his start with Rocky in 1976 and continuing to play the iconic boxer in a handful of sequels. He's also known for playing tortured veteran Rambo, of course, a role that dates back to 1982's First Blood. Since then, Stallone has appeared in action movies like Cobra (1986), Demolition Man (1993), Judge Dredd (1995), The Expendables (2014), Bullet to the Head (2012) and Escape Plan (2013). Given that the original Die Hardis considered to be one of the greatest and most influential action films ever made, each subsequent entry in the series has been analyzed intensely to determine if it is worthy of living up to the legacy that John McTiernanestablished in 1988. While audiences were mostly receptive to the second two installments in the series, the fourth film Live Free or Die Hard was lambasted upon its initial release due to the fact that it was rated PG-13; not only did this mean that the film could not contain the level of violence that fans had expected from a new Die Hard sequel, but it prevented Bruce Willis from uttering John McClane’s signature catchphrase. Although it was evident that 20th Century Fox was trying to ensure that the film could appeal to a younger generation of viewers, the extended, R-rated cut of Live Free or...

Although Bruce Willis is often named as part of the “Planet Hollywood” trio that includes Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone, he is certainly not only defined by his roles in action films. John McClane of the Die Hard franchise is undeniably one of the most influential action heroes of all-time, but Willis was also a very versatile actor who worked alongside great auteurs like Rian Johnson, Robert Zemeckis, M. Night Shyamalan, Terry Gilliam, and Richard Linklater. Although Willis has sadly retired from acting due to his diagnosis with aphasia, he did some of the most interesting work of his entire career within the past decade. Willis appeared in Wes Anderson’s charming coming-of-age dramedy Moonrise Kingdom, and he was so good that it is a tragedy that they didn’t get to collaborate on any other films together.

John Wick. Rambo. John McClane. Ellen Ripley. Action heroes whose names are etched into cinematic stone thanks to their intrepid nature and affinity for going it alone against all odds. But one character is missing. A character who embodies that same inner strength, resilience, and determination in the face of adversity. That name is Aatami Korpi, and while you may not know it yet, you won't forget it after seeing his debut action thriller, Sisu, which is all set to hit free streaming this month.
Written and directed by Jalmari Helander, the Finnish action thriller Sisu was released back in 2022 and stars Jorma Tommila as Aatami Korpi alongside Aksel Hennie, Jack Doolan, Mimosa Willamo, and Onni Tommila. The brutal and bloody action outing follows a mysterious lone prospector who, after being robbed by a group of Nazi soldiers during the last days of World War II, must wage a one-man war of his own.

Ray (Brian Tyree Henry) and Manny (Wagner Moura) are attached at the hip. The lifelong best friends finish each other’s sentences, they know each other’s families, and — most relevant to their present circumstances — they have each other’s backs. Like, they really have each other’s backs. Their loyalty goes beyond airport pick-ups or wingman sacrifices. They have taken and will take bullets for each other. When a cop presses Manny to rat out Ray, or a girlfriend begs Ray to leave Manny behind, neither one buckles under the pressure. In the City of Brotherly Love, they aren’t just old buds. They’re family.
It’s a shame, then, that over the eight hour-long episodes making up “Dope Thief’s” first season, Ray and Manny’s relationship is reduced to testing that devotion over and over again. Their central predicament — on the run from a very scary drug dealer,...

This article contains massive spoilers for "Novocaine."
Although the marketing campaign for "Novocaine" is overall a pretty clever one, it does make the film's plot look as old school as possible. A mild-mannered Everyman, Nathan Caine (Jack Quaid), decides to chase after some bad guy bank robbers when, during the robbery, they kidnap the love of his life, the girl-next-door bank teller Sherry (Amber Midthunder). Going by the trailers and TV spots alone, it would seem that the only twist on such a tried-and-true "hero rescues the girl" plot is that Nathan suffers from a condition which doesn't allow him to feel pain, and thus despite his lack of combat training, he can credibly take a beating and keep on kicking.
However, it turns out that "Novocaine" has several more tricks up its sleeve than just that, especially when it comes to subverting its initial premise and the character dynamics.

Bruce Willis is no stranger to starring in thrillers. After starring in Die Hard (1988), Willis ascended to action hero royalty, reprising his role as cop John McClane in four sequels of varying quality, the most recent of which, A Good Day to Die Hard, sent the franchise out with a whimper in 2013. Willis appeared in a handful of well-received movies throughout the 2010s, including Red (2010), Moonrise Kingdom (2012), and Looper (2012), but the last decade or so of his career was mostly dominated by critically-panned, direct-to-vod action movies.
Though Willis retired from acting in 2022 after being diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, Megan Fox remains active in the world of Hollywood. Fox rocketed to fame due to her role as Mikaela in Transformers in 2007, a role she reprised in that film's 2009 sequel, subtitled Revenge of the Fallen. Die Hard has become a classic, for its thrilling action and because some consider it a Christmas movie. However, not everyone loved the movie upon its release, like film critic Roger Ebert, who had one major problem with the movie. Even more surprising, Ebert had glowing reviews for the next two films in the series, and likened the films to the James Bond movies.
Ebert Thought 'Die Hard 2' Did Action Well
Roger Ebert much preferred Die Hard 2: Die Harder over the original. He gave Die Hard 2 three-and-a-half stars out of four, compared to the two stars he gave Die Hard. To him, Die Hard 2 was "terrific entertainment," and a film that would have your date clutching your arm during some of the tenser moments. In his review, Ebert wrote:
"Die Hard 2 is as unlikely as the Bond pictures, and as much fun.

Although long-running franchises have become a seemingly permanent part of our current cinematic landscape, there's an argument to be made that even the most consistently high-quality series are subject to diminishing returns. The question of whether a sequel can match or surpass an original is still a topic of debate, and it's one that reaches all the way back to an era when sequels were hardly as common as they are now. While the debate makes sense on the surface — after all, on paper, how can any sequel be as fresh and unique as an original? — it's perhaps based on the wrong question. Maybe, despite all the constant franchise rankings and the like, we shouldn't be asking whether a sequel surpasses its predecessor, but rather what new depths and richness are brought to the material that enhances the franchise as a whole.

For years, fans have argued whether Die Hard qualifies as a Christmas movie. While some see it as a must-watch holiday film, others believe it’s just a regular action movie with some Christmas elements. Bruce Willis, who played the main character John McClane also spoke up in the past to share his opinion on the debate.

However, his opinion hasn’t convinced everyone. Actress Keira Knightley, for example, still believes that Die Hard should be considered a Christmas classic, showing that the debate is far from over.

Typecasting isn't a rarity in Hollywood, even among genuinely great actors, yet there are still plenty of individuals who manage to break the mold and defy expectations with each role they take. Among those actors who have escaped being pigeonholed, however, Daisy Ridley is becoming a standout. Initially bursting onto the scene as Rey in 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens, she's spread her wings and flown to all manner of genres from murder-mysteries with Murder on the Orient Express to the romantic Shakespearian re-imagining Ophelia, the psychological thriller The Marsh King's Daughter, and beyond. For her latest outing, Cleaner, she plays a John McClane-like action hero under the direction of GoldenEye and Casino Royale's Martin Campbell, and it's another film that has her thankful she has the freedom to explore in her career.

By now the "'Die Hard' on a"-style movie is basically its own genre. John McTiernan's legendary 1988 actioner spawned more imitators than perhaps any movie in Hollywood history. Many action fans know, for instance, that "Speed" is essentially "Die Hard on a bus," and its follow-up, "Speed 2: Cruise Control," literally was supposed to be "Die Hard 3" before its script was rejected in favor of the "Die Hard with a Vengeance" screenplay. "Cliffhanger" is "Die Hard" on a mountain, "Air Force One" is "Die Hard" on a plane. Heck, even today we're seeing the movie reproduced in the form of Netflix thriller "Carry-On," a Christmas action movie which is essentially just "Die Hard 2" with Taron Edgerton and Jason Bateman.
While many of these imitators are excellent action movies in their own right, the "Die Hard" formula doesn't always produce such quality. Take "Aftermath," a new movie...

Bruce Willis' Tears of the Sun was much more popular with audiences than with critics and was saved by its excellent final battle. Bruce Willis' greatest action movie characters have often had a military or law enforcement background, including Korben Dallas in The 5th Element and the iconic John McClane in the Die Hard franchise. While many of Bruce Willis' action movies have a funny side, Willis has proven himself a great actor in the more serious and hard-hitting war genre too. That said, he was disappointed with his 2003 movie Tears of the Sun.
Tears of the Sun is about a rescue mission in Nigeria. Willis plays Lieutenant A.K. Waters, whose mission is to lead his Navy Seal team to a U.S. doctor's camp and rescue her before the rebels reach her. Bruce Willis Makes First Public Appearance Almost 2 Years After Acting Retirement In Emotional Video
Bruce Willis recently emerged in his first public appearance after stepping away from acting due to a diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia in early 2022. Best known for his renowned roles in such films as Die Hard (1988), Pulp Fiction (1994), and M. Night Shyamalan's The Sixth Sense (1999), Willis left an undeniable mark on Hollywood with a career spanning over four decades. His retirement came after facing increasing health challenges, culminating in a diagnosis of aphasia, which later progressed to frontotemporal dementia (Ftd).
A video shared via Instagram by Willis' wife, Emma Hemming Willis, shows him speaking, shaking hands, and taking photos with two of the first responders handling the wildfires in Southern California. While Willis hasn’t exclusively stayed out of the public eye since his retirement, the majority of his retirement has been spent in private with his family. Check out the video below:

Following the health diagnosis that led to his sudden retirement from acting, Bruce Willis is seldom seen in public these days. However, he ventured out to personally thank first responders amid the Los Angeles wildfires.
Emma Heming Willis, the Die Hard star's wife, shared a video on Instagram revealing video footage of the interaction. In the video, Willis can be seen shaking hands and greeting with police officers, though as the clip is set against music, it can't be heard what they're saying to one another. The caption of the Instagram post added that this has never been unusual for Willis to show his respects to first responders.

From the bouncer brawler Road House to the high-octane spy caper True Lies, there are plenty of great mindless action movies out there for Fast & Furious fans to enjoy. What makes the Fast & Furious movies so much fun is that they allow the audience to switch off their brain. They flagrantly defy the laws of physics with their absurd action set-pieces. James Bond movies tend to have complicated plots and the Bourne movies deal with heavy themes, but the Fast & Furious saga doesn’t strive to do anything more than entertain.
There are plenty of other great action movies that fall into this category. Directors like Michael Bay and stars like Jason Statham have made a career out of action movies that stimulate the audience’s adrenaline while giving their intellect some much-needed rest. Bruce Willis knows a thing or two about playing a hero, given the fact that he made the character of John McClane a pop culture mainstay thanks to the Die Hard franchise. Even though Willis may have only played the hero on the big screen, that doesn't mean he can't see the incredible heroism that firefighters and first responders have been showcasing as the Los Angeles Wildfires ravage parts of the city. They have been the true heroes of this entire ordeal and Willis — who was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in 2023 — made a rare public appearance to let them know just how much they are appreciated.

Bruce Willis, one of Hollywood's finest, made wearing a vest during a hostage situation seem perfectly acceptable. Many of his most beloved roles saw him wielding a squint like Clint Eastwood and a level of sass that other actors just couldn't deliver. But much like Willis himself, his top three rated films on Rotten Tomatoes are a surprising package that would certainly make for an interesting unofficial trilogy to watch over a weekend. That includes what Rt has deemed the best of the bunch: a movie about a decidedly vexed New York City cop with no shoes and a partiality to Roy Rogers films.
Indeed, it should come as absolutely no shock that "Die Hard," Willis' breakout vehicle and a bullet-riddled pillar of the action movie genre, is the actor's highest rated film on Rt among critics. Earning a well-deserved 94% from the website, "Die Hard" broke the mold that so...

The ’90s – a time when Bruce Willis was ‘the guy’ for Hollywood. Fresh off Die Hard and coasting through a streak of hits, hits like The Fifth Element, Armageddon, and The Sixth Sense, he was Hollywood’s everyman hero with just the right amount of smirk. If a movie needed someone to crack wise (sometimes for the heck of it) while saving the day, Willis was first in line. But even when you’re on top, it’s easy to misread the room.

It shouldn't come as a shock to learn that the top rated movie on Netflix at the moment is a holiday flick, but you might be pleasantly surprised to learn that the festive rom-com drawing the most eyeballs on the streamer right now, "Our Little Secret," features Lindsay Lohan. More than any other holiday, the Christmas season comes fully equipped with movies that you might end up watching whether you want to or not. Holiday marathons set up camp on several TV channels for most of December, and if your Christmas-celebrating family isn't throwing on a virtual yule log during group celebrations, there's a good chance they've got "Home Alone" or "A Christmas Story" on in the background of festivities. Plenty of Christmas movies aren't actually that great, but they have a way of needling their way into the fabric of the holiday season and becoming part of an unshakeable tradition. Others are true masterpieces, capable of catching us off guard and cracking open our hearts.

While the likes of It's a Wonderful Life and 8-Bit Christmas are clear-cut Christmas movies, the debate rages on years after its release about whether Die Hard falls under that category. The terms "Christmas adjacent" and "niche Christmas movie" have been used to describe movies that take place during the holidays, but don't have any overt Christmas themes in their story.
Action is at the heart of the 1988 Bruce Willis film, and the story could have taken place at any time of the year with a few minor adjustments to dialogue and scenery. But it also contains sentimental themes closely associated with Christmas, which makes it something a little bit more than "Christmas adjacent." There's no better example of the difference than the first sequel, Die Hard 2: which was also set at Christmastime, but embodies completely different themes and ideas.
