There’s no doubt that John Ford was a master of the Western genre. Ford’s eye for storytelling made him one of the greatest directors of all time, and when it came to depicting the Civil War in How the West Was Won, he brought the same sharp vision that defined his career. The film is separated into five segments, each directed by a different filmmaker, about a frontier family experiencing defining moments of the 19th century.
In John Ford’s Civil War chapter, the story follows Zeb Rawlings (George Peppard), a young man drawn into the conflict despite his mother’s desperate wish to keep him out of it. Zeb witnesses the horrors of the Battle of Shiloh, losing his father in the process, and later returns home to find his mother dead and his family farm no longer a place he belongs. Hollywood history is no stranger to the talented child actor. But out of all the bright-eyed and bushy-tailed youngsters who have lit up the screen over the decades, River Phoenix is a clear standout. A preternaturally old soul, Phoenix brought maturity and profound vulnerability to all of his roles, making every film he appears in significantly richer for his presence. As a child actor, he seemed destined for great things, and as he aged into his early 20s, he was poised to meet every expectation audiences had placed on his shoulders.
But then, suddenly, he was gone. Phoenix died of a drug overdose in 1993, when he was just 23 years old. Although he left behind the tragedy of so much potential left unfulfilled, he also gave audiences a filmography full of interesting and measured performances to enjoy. Here's his entire catalog, ranked from worst to best, based on critical consensus and our own personal impressions.

Days of Our Lives always has fun, sometimes obscure pop-culture references interspersed in the characters’ dialogue. In December 2022, an eagle-eyed fan on X, formerly Twitter, noticed a mention of the president of Salem’s city council as being Cass Winthrop. This was a nod to the Another World character of the same name. Stephen Schnetzer played Cass from 1982 until 1999 and recently reprised his Days role as Steven Olson. Now comes another reference to an old soap. And the fans were on top of it.
Lady Whistleblower’s Bank Gave It Away
On the January 7 episode of Days, Stephanie (Abigail Klein) implored Chad (Billy Flynn) to tell her the identity of the new Lady Whistleblower, whose articles are endangering the soap-within-a-soap called Body & Soul. Chad went on about privacy issues and admitted that the person submitted articles anonymously. However, Steph convincingly argued that the articles were hit pieces, not just opinions.

Scream 7 adds a Ghostbusters star to its cast. The two franchises share a unique legacy as iconic cultural staples, each rooted in late 20th century thrills. The Scream series, which debuted in 1996, revolutionized the slasher genre with its meta-commentary and gripping murder mysteries centered around the Ghostface killer. The horror franchise continues to evolve with a new generation of victims, killers, shocking twists, and self-referential humor. With Kevin Williamson's Scream 7 on the horizon, the latest installment promises another bloody addition to its storied history.

The following contains major spoilers from NCIS Season 22, Episode 3, "The Trouble With Hal," which debuted Monday, Oct. 28 on CBS.
NCIS Season 22, Episode 3, "The Trouble With Hal" is a typical Halloween TV episode. It's lighthearted, has some spooky elements, and more than a few jokes about ghosts. But that's pretty much all the episode has to offer, making it unlikely to have much rewatch value after viewers have celebrated the holiday.
"The Trouble With Hal" involves a Navy Seal returning home from deployment to learn that someone has been squatting in his home -- and that the squatter is dead. To find the killer, the NCIS team has to look into the history of the house itself. What follows is a predictable mystery, but it gets some help from guest stars Donna Mills and Justin Bruening, and it'll give fans a smile or two before the credits roll.

Detroit Lions fans watched in horror as star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson broke a tibia during the teams 47-9 win over the Dallas Cowboys last night.
The scene at AT&T Stadium went from celebratory to scary in an instant, with Aidan injuring his left leg while sacking the Cowboys Qb.
Immediately after the tackle, both Lions and Cowboys players rallied around Aidan as he sought out medical attention. Soon after, his family, including his sisters, rallied around him as well.
One noticeably absent person in Aidan’s life is his girlfriend, and many are wondering if that’s because she doesn’t exactly hold that title anymore.

The Scream franchise has been under a lot of heat in the past few months. After it allegedly fired Melissa Barrera due to her support for Palestine, a dam broke that became unstoppable. Despite being one of the most iconic and successful slasher films of all time, it lost a majority of its public support. Additionally, it let Jenna Ortega slip through its grasp at the peak of Wednesday’s success.

Since then, audiences have been extremely wary about the seventh installment. Not only due to the controversy but also concerned about where the story is going to go. A recent update seems to have added yet another hurdle for the franchise that could easily wreck it.

The 1962 Western film "How the West Was Won" showcased a star-studded ensemble cast, including John Wayne, Henry Fonda, James Stewart, and Debbie Reynolds. The movie's unique structure featured five different stories following the Prescott family, allowing each actor to have their moment to shine. "How the West Was Won" was a major success, grossing $50 million on a $15 million budget, and was nominated for eight Academy Awards, winning three.
A 1962 Western put together an impressive cast that elevated the film and made it an instant classic that would also become a box office champion and a critically acclaimed hit. Casting has always been one major factor in a movie's success, not just in terms of what the actors can deliver, but also the star power that comes with them. Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
A bizarre recurring issue with the Amityville “franchise” is that the films tend to be needlessly complicated. Back in the day, the first sequels moved away from the original film’s religious-themed haunted house storyline in favor of streamlined, easily digestible concepts such as “haunted lamp” or “haunted mirror.”
As the budgets plummeted and indie filmmakers capitalized on the brand’s notoriety, it seems the wrong lessons were learned. Runtimes have ballooned past the 90-minute mark and the narratives are often saggy and unfocused.
Both issues are clearly on display in Amityville Karen (2022), a film that starts off rough, but promising, and ends with a confused whimper.
The promise is embodied by the tinge of self-awareness in Julie Anne Prescott (The Amityville Harvest)’s screenplay,...

The "John Wick" franchise isn't just a montage of John Woo-inspired gun-fu combat sequences. The series has used just about everything imaginable to craft intense action scenes, from dogs to, as was the case with "John Wick: Chapter 4," fast-moving vehicles. In fact, cars and other forms of transport have been utilized by franchise director Chad Stahelski throughout the four "John Wick" films, and not just to choreograph fight-scene style "car-fu" sequences.
All the way back in 2014's "John Wick," the titular hitman reluctantly returns to his former illicit lifestyle after his puppy is killed and his Ford Mustang Boss 429 stolen. That first entry in the saga of Baba Yaga saw Wick get revenge for the aforementioned pup killing, but his Mustang remained unaccounted for. Which is why, when "John Wick: Chapter 2" arrived, there was some unfinished business to take care of.

“Scream” franchise screenwriter Kevin Williamson is hoping Neve Campbell returns to Woodsboro. Campbell exited the iconic slasher films ahead of the recent sequel “Scream 6” over salary disputes, calling it a “very difficult decision to move on” after 25 years of playing final girl Sidney Prescott.
Williamson said during the “Happy Horror Time” podcast that Paramount should negotiate further with Campbell and ultimately “pay her the money” her presence is worth. “I totally respect her opinion,” Williamson said. “I know exactly where she’s coming from, I know her well. I love and adore her and that’s what she did. It’s right for her. I love everyone involved in ‘Scream’ and all I can say is, pay her the money. That’s what I would do, I would give her the money.”
He added, “I’m sure there’s a number they can agree on that will make them...

"Star Trek: The Animated Series," originally just called "Star Trek," debuted on September 8, 1973. It will soon be commemorating its 50th anniversary. To celebrate, as announced at this year's San Diego Comic Con, Paramount will be newly animating several "Star Trek" characters and tapping extant "Star Trek" actors to produce several promotional bumpers in the old "Tas" style. Jonathan Frakes will play Commander William Riker in one such bumper, Armin Shimerman will return to play Quark in another, while Doug Jones will appear as Saru from "Star Trek: Discovery."
The announcement was given by "Star Trek" creative consultant Casper Kelly, who previously worked on "Star Trek: Short Treks."
"Star Trek: The Animated Series" famously reunited most of the original series cast (Walter Koenig does not appear) and merrily continued the five-year mission of the U.S.S. Enterprise. James Doohan reprised his role as Scotty, but also took on a lot of the show's supporting characters,...

Marvel Studios' Secret Invasion is weeks away from landing on Disney+, but the series still remains largely a mystery. However, because the comic book event the series takes its name from featured the entire roster of A-list heroes, fans are expecting to see plenty of recognizable heroes. However, Secret Invasion will be a better series without a bunch of Marvel Cinematic Universe cameos getting in the way. Marvel Studios released the first five minutes of Secret Invasion after a social media marketing stunt reminiscent of the online augmented reality games of the early 2000s. The scene features a new character, Richard Dormer's Agent Prescott, talking to Martin Freeman's Agent Everett Ross. Or is he? It's a fair question after Prescott tackles him at the end of the clip.
After the scene, another trailer plays, including a line from Olivia Coleman's character asking why Nick Fury doesn't call his super-powered friends.

The invasion has begun. Well, actually, Marvel’s Secret Invasion doesn’t start for a few weeks yet, but if you can’t quite wait that long – good news! The first few minutes of the show have now been made available to watch online. All you need to do is click on this link, and crack the code, and you’ll get a sneaky look at the new Nick Fury-centric series, coming to Disney+ on 21 June, followed by the main trailer.
This opening sequence doesn’t give much away. There’s no Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) at all, with the scenes instead focusing on Martin Freeman’s Everett Ross, as he goes to meet who we assume is another CIA agent, called Prescott. He goes all Charlie-Day-pointing-at-a-board-of-red-string, explaining to Ross how multiple attacks across the globe show signs of being carried out by the same group, and that that group isn’t human,...

A new clip from the upcoming Disney+ mini series “Secret Invasion” was released online Thursday, and in addition to the espionage-related paranoia and suspicion featured in the clip itself, it also gave fans a chance to do some spycraft of their own just to watch the thing.
The clip — what feels like an entire scene from the show, featuring Martin Freeeman as ex-CIA agent Everett Ross — wasn’t posted to YouTube or on Twitter. Instead, Marvel Studios’ official Twitter account asked fans to decipher a mystery board that revealed a password to the site “theinvasionhasbegun.com,” allowing them to unlock an “encrypted” file on the site.

Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Scream 6!The strengthened sister relationship between Jenna Ortega’s Tara and Melissa Barrera’s Sam in Scream 6 finally fixes a key problem with family in the Scream franchise. Since the very first movie, Scream has been notable for having complex and twisted family dynamics, whether that be Ghostface killers attacking their own relatives, long-standing familial grudges, or Ghostfaces targeting family members of past killers and victims. After Sidney and the Prescott family stood at the center of the first four Scream movies, Scream (2022) progressed the franchise’s blood ties by making Sam Carpenter the daughter of Ghostface killer Billy Loomis, Tara Carpenter the half-sister of Sam, and twins Chad and Mindy Meeks-Martin the nephew and niece of Randy Meeks.
Familial relationships have never been more important in the franchise than in Scream 6, as the primary dynamics are between siblings Sam and Tara,...

While we weren't looking, "Scream" newcomer Josh Segarra has slowly been infiltrating every corner of the entertainment industry. Comic-book TV fans might know him as Adrian Chase/Vigilante in the now defunct CW "Arrowverse," or the show-stealing supporting character, Pug in "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law." When he's not fighting alongside superheroes, he's exuding wonderful "golden retriever" energy as Lance on HBO Max's "The Other Two."
In "Scream VI," the newest reinvention of the meta-horror slasher franchise, Segarra plays Danny, the handsome, supportive neighbor to protagonist Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera). Though it's a small role in a stacked ensemble full of likable, fresh faces, his charisma goes a long way. At this point of the franchise, we know better than to trust the love interest. And yet, Segarra's effortless and disarming charm makes it a little difficult -- not just for Sam, but for the audience too.

The latest poster for Scream VI is full of franchise easter eggs. The upcoming sequel to 2022's Scream sees Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett return to the director’s chair, with James Vanderblit and Gary Busick returning to write the screenplay. Franchise alum Courteney Cox will reprise her role as Gale Weathers, with Hayden Panettiere returning as Kirby Reed for the first time since 2011's Scream 4. They will be joined by Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Dermot Mulroney, Henry Czerny, Samara Weaving, and Willow's Tony Revolori.
Now, the official Scream Twitter account has released a brand-new poster for Scream VI, drawing a subway map in the shape of the Ghostface mask. However, the poster has also revealed some major plot clues, with Kirby Reed's stop being the only one on the map that is closed, and Sam Carpenter's (Barrera) name being noticeably larger than the others.

The second season finale of ‘American Horror Stories’ gets pulled away by the tide and struggles to find its way back to a compelling conclusion.
“She needs to find her life again and get back to normal. We all do.”
There are some exceptional horror films that find fear within the unknown depths of the sea, whether it’s overt monster movies like Deep Rising, Underwater, or “The Raft” segment from Creepshow 2, or terrifying tales that are adjacent to the water like The Shallows. American Horror Story has more or less left underwater tales of woe alone even though a story that’s centered on the Loch Ness Monster or other aquatic Cryptids seems completely in line with the series’ agenda. “Lake,” the season finale of American Horror Stories’ second season, avoids a modern monster myth in favor of a somber meditation on grief and guilt. In a stinging rebuke of the Art Directors Guild and Chuck Parker, its national executive director, an Nlrb administrative law judge has found that Parker “unlawfully” fired the guild’s longtime accountant “in retaliation” for her successful efforts to form a union among the guild’s staff.
In a statement to Deadline, the guild said that “This is an ongoing matter and will be appealed.”
Nicole Oeuvray, who had been the guild’s head accountant for 16 years, was a leader of the campaign to unionize the guild’s staff back in 2019 under the auspices of Local 537 of the Office of Professional Employees International Union (Opeiu). The 3,500-member guild, which is one of only three IATSE locals with national jurisdiction, is headquartered in Studio City, Ca. with an office staff of fewer than 30 employees. In his testimony, Parker described the environment of the smallish office as a “fishbowl.”
