Oscar-winning British director Asif Kapadia has spoken of the difficulties of both making and distributing his end-of-days doc/fiction feature2073.
Told from a future perspective after the collapse of society, it utilises real-life footage to point to global tragedy to come. But Kapadia says that the “tipping point into authoritarian rule” has already arrived.
Speaking during a wide-ranging masterclass at Visions du Reel, Kapadia described 2073, which premiered in Venice last September,as “a documentary set in the future that hasn’t happened yet. The film is a warning, which I think even one of the financiers didn’t get – until...

A clunky fusion of sci-fi fiction and political documentary, Asif Kapadia’s 2073 shakes us into submission via a series of cursory rundowns of crumbling democracies, the weaponization of social media, rising xenophobia, and more. In summarily covering so many global crises, Kapadia’s film plays less like a galvanizing call to action than a shapeless and hollow piece of agitprop that inspires only the same paralyzing sense of fear and hopelessness that it accuses demagogues around the world of provoking in people.
Kapadia and editor Chris King have detailed the biographies of famous figures in compelling, well-structured documentaries—Dominic Senna in 2010’s Senna and Amy Winehouse in 2015’s Amy. By contrast, 2073, whose only coherent thesis is the belief that the world is going to shit, is dubious and throws structure to the wind. It tries to cover so much material that even the most abhorrent of tragedies are somewhat...

The intriguing 2073, a hybrid documentary and science fiction thriller produced by Neon and directed by Asif Kapadia, will land in theaters on December 27, 2024, it has been revealed. The film blends speculative storytelling with nonfiction reporting and serves as a warning against climate change, the dwindling of global democracy, and authoritarian states, among other societal ills. Starring Samantha Morton and Naomi Ackie (Blink Twice), 2073 is inspired by Chris Marker's landmark 1962 short film La Jete, in which a time traveler attempts to change past events in order to save his own dismal future.
The short also inspired Terry Gilliam's 1995 film 12 Monkeys, which starred Bruce Willis, Brad Pitt, and Madeleine Stowe. The release date has now been revealed courtesy of Variety, and you can check out the film's official logline is as follows:

Neon has set a Dec. 27 release date and released the trailer for Asif Kapadia’s (“Amy”) “2073,” a speculative sci-fi documentary that serves as a warning for a potentially dismal reality that lurks 49 years in the future.
Per an official logline, the film takes place in the year “‘2073,’ and the worst fears of modern life have been realized. Surveillance drones fill the burnt orange skies and militarized police roam the wrecked streets, while survivors hide away underground, struggling to remember a free and hopeful existence. In this ingenious mixture of visionary science fiction and speculative nonfiction, Kapadia transports us to a future foreshadowed by the terrifying realities of our present moment. Samantha Morton (“In America”) plays a survivor besieged by nightmare visions of the past—a past that happens to be our present, visualized through contemporary footage interconnecting today’s global crises of authoritarianism, unchecked big tech, inequality and global climate change.

Neon announced on Monday that 2073, the new genre-bending documentary from Oscar winner Asif Kapadia (Amy), will be released in select U.S. theaters on December 27th. The studio also unveiled a new trailer, which you can view above.

2073, writer-director Asif Kapadia’s sui generis feature, is nothing if not ambitious. It offers viewers a numbingly bleak vision of the future 51 years from now, illustrated by a fictional framing device starring Samantha Morton, then explains how things got/will get that bad through actual recent archival footage and original interviews with an assortment of thinkers, journalists and activists. By comparison, George Orwell’s classic dystopian novel 1984 looks as jolly as a Peppa Pig picture book.
You can’t help but admire Kapadia’s commitment to feel-bad cinema, his refusal to end on any false note of hope. It’s all part of a deliberate strategy, according to an interview in the film’s press notes, to motivate the audience to do something, anything, to stop all this happening. But given how sinister the forces sowing the seeds of our future destruction are — rising autocracy, unregulated technology and looming climate...

Drones fill the orange-tinted sky as citizens are forced to hide from authorities in Neon’s 2073 trailer. Directed by Oscar winner Asif Kapadia, 2073‘s trailer teases a terrifying world that is, unfortunately, not all that difficult to imagine. As the trailer declares, “This is not fiction. This is not a documentary. This is a warning.”

Late last month, Luke Bryan surprised fans with a special guest at the Jacksonville, Florida, stop on his Raised Up Right Tour. It wasn’t one of Bryan’s country music peers, but a politician with presidential dreams: Florida governor Ron DeSantis.
Walking onstage to pre-recorded music and tossing merch into the crowd, DeSantis treated the cameo like a campaign appearance ahead of the November midterms. “Hello, Jacksonville. Are you excited to be in the free state of Florida?” he asked. “All you Florida voters, if you want to keep the state of Florida free,...

Asif Kapadia, the Oscar-winning director of “Amy” and “Senna,” is set to direct a new documentary film called “2073” that will look to the future and the challenges that will face the world 50 years from now.
Inspired by “La Jetée,” the classic, experimental science fiction film from 1962 directed by Chris Marker, Kapadia’s movie is a thriller looking at a dystopian future set in 2073. “La Jetée” was about a time traveler who tries to change history after an apocalyptic and nuclear World War III. The film was constructed entirely of black and white still photos and served as much of the premise for Terry Gilliam’s sci-fi “12 Monkeys.”
“I want to make an epic about the state of the world, using elements of science fiction as a lens through which to examine the huge questions we are facing as a species and hopefully find solutions, before it’s too late,...

Read More: Cannes: Why Asif Kapadia Wants His Amy Winehouse Documentary to Anger You Altitude Films has bought all UK rights to "Maradona," the feature-length documentary about the legendary football player Diego Maradona, who set the world transfer fee record twice (to Barcelona for £5 million and later to Ssc Napoli for £6.9 million). The Argentinian native then led Napoli to their first-ever title, winning over a nation as an outsider. The filmmakers behind "Maradona" are no strangers to biographic storytelling, as Asif Kapadia, James Gay- Rees and Chris King are the team that brought audiences "Senna," "Ronaldo" and current Oscar frontrunner "Amy." The partnership between the filmmakers and Altitude Films marks their second collaboration. Altitude Films oversaw the distribution of "Amy," which grossed £3.76 million and became the single most profitable British documentary the UK box office...

Editors Margaret Sixel ("Mad Max: Fury Road") and Hank Corwin ("The Big Short") were the big Ace winners Friday night at the Beverly Hilton thanks to the split between drama and comedy. Meanwhile, "Inside Out" (edited by Kevin Nolting) and "Amy” (edited by Chris King) took animation and doc, respectively. This means"The Revenant" lost another opportunity for bragging rights for editor Stephen Mirrione. In terms of the bigger Oscar picture, Corwin becomes the frontrunner because of the surging momentum for "The Big Short," which took the PGA, although he'll have additional competition from Tom McArdle ("Spotlight"), who wasn't nominated by Ace but was nominated by the Academy for his less showy but very well crafted work on the Best Picture frontrunner. And Saturday's Screen Actors Guild Feature Ensemble Award showdown between "The Big Short" and "Spotlight" should further...

Legendary Argentinian soccer player Diego Maradona is set to be the subject of British filmmaker Asif Kapadia's next documentary "Maradona" for Lorton Entertainment.
Following in the wake of Kapadia's acclaimed docos about Aryten Senna and Amy Winehouse, the latter the favorite to take the documentary Oscar next month, Kapadia will helm the project along with his "Amy" collaborators James Gay-Rees producing and Chris King editing.
Maradona was a member of the Italian club Napoli and has often been considered the greatest soccer player of all time, one who even has a religion – Church of Maradona – created in his name. Yet he was also a controversial figure with scandals involving an illegitimate son, mafia ties and a cocaine habit - ultimately leading him to retire in disgrace in 1992.
Like Kapadia's previous films, this will utilise hundreds of hours of never-before-seen footage taken from his personal archive.

Greek helmer Yorgos Lanthimos’ purest and painful reminder that love reigns is measuring off against Justin Kurzel’s paranoia bliss and Andrew Haigh’s in it for the long term portrait received the most nominations for the upcoming 2015 British Independent Film Awards. Mysteriously, Rachel Weisz failed to nab a nom in the Best Actress category, but The Lobster has a wide-spread reach in all major categories with seven nominations. 45 Years, the favorite in both acting categories and Macbeth are one shy with six noms apiece. Apart from the Best Picture category, we’re keeping tabs for a surprise win in the Best Screenplay and the Best Supporting Actor race should be a hoot as both Gleesons in Brendan and Domhnall will be competing against each other. The award show technically kicks off award season on December 6th.

While we’ll be hearing about the Oscar race ad nauseam for the next many months, there are a few awards ceremony that actually highlight films that might slip under the radar. Like the recently unveiled Gotham award nominations, the British Independent Film Awards do a splendid job of taking a look at some of the year’s overlooked films, and today brings their nominations.
Topping the list is Yorgos Lanthimos‘ The Lobster (which we quite liked at Cannes, and will be released next spring in the U.S.), earning seven nominations, including Best Film and Director. Also in the same major categories, but earning six overall, were 45 Years and Macbeth, which we also praised, and will arrive in the U.S next month. Notably, the documentary Amy snuck into the Best Film category, proving just how much a hit it was in the U.K. as well.

The Lobster received seven nominations; 45 Years and Macbeth received six each.
Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Lobster topped this year’s Moet British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) nominations, which were presented in London this morning (Nov 3) by Gemma Chan and Thomas Brodie-Sangster.
The film garnered seven nods including Best British Independent Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Producer of the Year.

Amy
Directed by Asif Kapadia
UK, 2015
It’s rare to find an artist so thoroughly capable of translating their inner turmoil into something so ferocious and beautiful. Amy Winehouse was one such musical artist. Simply, she was a conduit for the human condition. The new documentary, Amy, attempts to use archival footage, interviews, and performance highlights to better understand the woman behind the lyrics. Unfortunately, director Asif Kapadia’s kitchen-sink approach isn’t suited for such a complicated subject. In the end, what should have been a celebration of Winehouse’s unique talent becomes a cliché-ridden obsession to explain her downfall.
By the time she died of alcohol poisoning in 2011, 27 year-old Amy Winehouse had become a walking punchline. Her emaciated appearance (due to a longstanding eating disorder) and drug-addled antics made it easy to dismiss her amazing accomplishments. But beyond the Grammy Awards and the sensational concert meltdowns, there was a truly gifted artist.

Chicago – She burned like a firework in the sky, and just as quickly faded away. The unique voice of Amy Winehouse was fresh air into the music vacuum, and yet the delicate state of her destructive addictions succumbed to a sudden notoriety. Director Asif Kapadia and producer James Gay-Rees tell her story in ‘Amy.’
The documentary stands by itself as a trek into darkness, through a 21st Century life captured on video, film and photographs from childhood to superstar fame. Amy Winehouse was a girl from North London with a jazz smooth vocal styling seemingly from the gods. She was twenty years old when her first album, “Frank” (2003), brought her to a wider audience. The follow-up in 2008, “Black to Black,” established Winehouse as a one-of-a-kind singer and personality. The ironic song “Rehab” from that album was a huge hit, but couldn’t save Winehouse from her own tragic sensitivity to love,...

Amy Winehouse. Amy Winehouse documentary: 'Heartbreaking' and 'impressive' In an era of disposable pop music, the songs of the late Amy Winehouse feel timeless. Her sound spans the decades: bluesy and jazzy, a little bit punk and a little bit gansta. She was an old soul belting out new school lyrics that were confessional, profane, clever, and withering. She has been compared to Billie Holiday (in more ways than one, alas) and Winehouse herself has noted Sarah Vaughn as an influence. Her phrasing could turn any note into an adventure, bending and stretching it until it made multiple emotional statements. Her voice was both propulsive and brittle with a vibrato that could pound like a jackhammer or purr like Eartha Kitt. And that's to say nothing of her signature look, the beehive hairdo, the tattoos, and the increasingly garish makeup that would eventually hide much more than facial blemishes. Unfortunately,...
