Netflix is one of the largest streaming services, and, aside from having other licensed titles on its platform, it has also created a name as a studio. Its titles often feature high-profile actors, and despite some of them not often enchanting both the critics and the audience, the streamer has had an amazing few months.
One of the titles that received major success recently is Cameron Diaz's Back in Action. The action comedy, which stars Diaz and Jamie Foxx as retired spies, also comes with a tongue-in-cheek reference to the actress' long break from acting. Per Tudum, the break didn't stop her from continuing to be one of the biggest action stars, as Back in Action joined Netflix's prestigious Most Popular Movies list.
Diaz's last film was 2014's Annie, and then she took a break to focus on her personal life. Her co-star, Foxx, persuaded her to come back to acting,...

In 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery launched its “Diversity Digest,” a quarterly update on the company’s Dei efforts. The first installment highlighted Latino representation in “Blue Beetle” and home renovation show “Rico to the Rescue.”
But after regular updates in 2024, the digest went silent after the election of President Trump. Last week, the feature was dropped from the company’s Dei page, along with Wbd’s commitments to equity and diversity outreach, as the company narrowed its focus to “inclusion.” The move came as Trump has sought to stamp out Dei programs at the federal level and threatened civil and criminal investigations of private companies. Last month, the Federal Communications Commission opened an investigation of Comcast, the parent of NBCUniversal — and MSNBC — for possibly pursuing “invidious forms of discrimination” under the banner of Dei.
“Bullying is causing a lot of companies to reassess,” says Vernā Myers, former head of inclusion at Netflix.

Laverne Cox got the Scad TVfest crowd to its feet on Friday evening, as the star delivered a powerful, emotional speech about the new Trump administration’s attack on trans rights, civil rights and destruction of regulations in order to enrich the billionaires now in office. Taking the stage to accept Scad’s Impact Award, before premiering two episodes of her new Amazon Prime Video series “Clean Slate,” Cox delivered a call to action while also admitting the frightening truth that at the moment, “it might be too little, too late.”
“The system is rigged in favor of corporations, plutocrats, oligarchs, the wealthy,” she said. “It might not be the time for us to be able to rise up not only as trans people, but as working people, as people of color. People with the capacity for pregnancy, people who really just want to get a no fault divorce. And so many other things.

Laverne Cox has come out with a very important series at a very important time.
Clean Slate, which premiered on Amazon Prime Video on February 6, stars the Orange Is The New Black alum alongside George Wallace.
Laverne reached deep into her own childhood pain to tell this humorous, uplifting story.
But she hopes that this will have a healing effect upon viewers. Especially now, at a time when her story is so painfully relevant.

Praise be, The Handmaid’s Tale has made its runway debut.
In collaboration with Hulu for the forthcoming sixth and final season of their hit Emmy-winning dystopian series, fashion designer Christian Siriano has reimagined Gilead’s iconic red cloak for the runway. The item’s catwalk debut also celebrates the 40th anniversary of Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel on which the series is based.
The custom piece debuted as part of Siriano’s Fall/Winter 2025 Collection, which Siriano said was overall inspired by the idea of futurism and modern technology.
Siriano’s red cloak came to life amid the collection as a draped cape with structured shoulders, including a voluminous hood that was shed on the runway as a symbolic act of liberation and empowerment. By “reclaiming the red,” Siriano and Hulu aim to tell an inspiring story of resilience and transformation. The garment that has so often been viewed as a...

Everyone seems to love Clean Slate, the sitcom with “a trans story right when it’s needed the most.” But comedian George Wallace had a very different idea in mind when he first pitched the show to legendary producer Norman Lear — he wanted to update classic ‘70s sitcom Sanford and Son.
“Sanford and Son makes everybody feel good,” Wallace told The Hollywood Reporter. “Just hearing the music, already that smile comes on your face. So I said, ‘Let me go to Norman Lear.’ I had known him for 30 years, and I said, ‘I want to reboot Sanford and Son.’ He says, ‘Are you kidding? You can’t do that show. Get a twist and come back.’”
Lear knew a little something about Sanford and Son — he developed the show as NBC’s answer to All in the Family. While the sitcom doesn’t show up much in syndication these days,...

Laverne Cox’s new sitcom, Clean Slate, is now out! Cox, who rose to fame as Sophia Burset on Orange Is the New Black, has been touring the press circuit in New York City to get the word out about her new show.

A new comedy series on Prime Video is challenging traditional family dynamics with a heartwarming story of reconciliation and understanding. “Clean Slate,” developed by comedian George Wallace and featuring Emmy-nominated actress Laverne Cox, explores the complex relationship between a father and his transgender daughter.
The series follows Harry Slate (Wallace), a car wash owner in Mobile, Alabama, who reconnects with his child after 23 years of separation. The unexpected twist: his son has transitioned and now identifies as Desiree, played by Cox.
“I wondered, what if I had a son that left home and came back 23 years later?” Wallace said. Cox completed the thought: “And that child says, ‘I was never your son, I was always your daughter.'”
The show delves into themes of family acceptance, personal growth, and community, particularly within the African Methodist Episcopal (Ame) Church. For Cox, who grew up in Mobile, the setting carries deep personal significance.

For the past 20 years, Laverne Cox has dreamed of starring in a scripted series she created. With Prime Video’s “Clean Slate,” that dream is finally coming true. But getting to this point was far from an easy process.
“The fact that this has finally happened feels like a miracle,” Cox told TheWrap. “I’m just committed to having fun, being in deep gratitude and being of service when I can because people do want to hear from me as a trans person in this moment.”
The idea for “Clean Slate” actually came from the series’ co-lead, comedian George Wallace. Together with his collaborator Dan Ewen, Wallace wanted to make a remake of the iconic sitcom “Sanford and Son.” But when the duo pitched the idea to the NBC comedy’s uncredited executive producer Norman Lear, he passed unless the series could be reformatted with a twist. That’s how “Stanford and Daughter” was floated,...

With a new wave of anti-lgbtq legislation coming out of the first days of 2025, Laverne Cox is well aware of the cultural significance of her new show.
In Clean Slate, Season 1 of which is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, the actress plays a proud trans woman named Desiree who returns home to her estranged father Harry (George Wallace) in Mobile, Alabama, after 17 years, telling Deadline they set the series in her actual hometown in attempt to “humanize Desiree” amid the ongoing battle for trans rights.
“I wanted it to just have that sort of authenticity, and I wanted to kind of have it be an exploration of what it means to come home, how difficult that is,” explained Cox. “I have such a difficult relationship with Mobile, honestly, to this day, and I thought that tension would be great. It’s my real life.”

This is both an admirable sentiment and an easy one for Lear to have had. In the 1970s, when issues-oriented Lear comedies like All in the Family, The Jeffersons, and Maude dominated both the ratings and critics’ lists, Lear was able to bring together Americans from all walks of life,...

If you follow the human interest verticals of your news sources, you spent last year reading about children choosing to go “no contact” with their parents. Some TV creators must have had familial estrangement on their minds well before that, because 2025 has kicked off with this story being foundational to multiple new sitcoms. In Going Dutch, a father is thrown back into the life of the daughter who went no contact with him three years ago; they’re both in the military, and the father’s commanding officer knows about their tense relationship and is intentionally messing with him. In Shifting Gears, a daughter descends on her father after their contact with each other tapered off upon the death of her mother; the daughter’s marriage is falling apart, and she and her children need somewhere to live. Now, in Clean Slate, a father receives an email from the person...

Laverne Cox is an amazing performer. Though this should go without saying considering the great work she delivered over her seven years as Sophia Burset in Netflix's critically acclaimed series Orange Is the New Black, as a Black trans woman, Cox has not gotten the recognition she deserves ever since that show ended, instead being relegated to small roles in projects such as Promising Young Woman and Uglies. However, now that all eight episodes are poised to drop, are Cox's talent and charm enough to carry an entire series?...

Laverne Cox is addressing President Donald Trump’s series of executive orders targeting the trans community while promoting her upcoming Prime Video series Clean Slate, a comedy about an art dealer (Cox) and her father (George Wallace) who rebuild their long-estranged relationship when she returns home to Mobile, Alabama, as a trans woman.
On his first day in office on Jan. 20, President Trump signed an executive order stating that the government will only recognize two genders, male and female, going forward; ordering the transfer of trans women to male prisons and a stoppage on gender-affirming treatment for incarcerated individuals, noting the attorney general shall ensure “no federal funds are expended for any medical procedure, treatment or drug for the purpose of conforming an inmate’s appearance to that of the opposite sex.” One week later, a second order was issued to ban transgender troops from openly serving in the military.
