New music drops every Friday. Here are some of the noteworthy awards contenders that debuted on or around March 21, 2025.
Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco, I Said I Love You First
Real-life lovebirds Gomez and Blanco have joined forces on their first collaborative album, though the initial reviews are somewhat mixed. Martina Rebecca Inchingolo (Associated Press) writes that the artists "avoid cliché" on an "amusing pop album." And Robin Murray (Clash) calls it "a moving document of a relationship." But Alexis Petridis (The Guardian) thinks the music is "strangely anonymous for such a personal project." Still, the romantic narrative behind the couple's literal labor of love is compelling, and though Gomez has a limited Grammy track record — just one nom as a lead artist, Best Latin Pop Album for Revelación — Blanco has been a perennial nominee. As a producer, he has earned Album of the Year bids for Katy Perry's Teenage Dream,...

Though acclaimed composer Hans Zimmer is synonymous with crafting music for the directors of several high-profile directors, his work alongside Oscar-winning director Christopher Nolan remains among the most recognized throughout his career. Though Zimmer holds no hard feelings towards Nolan years after their creative breakup, he admits the prominent filmmaker feels like "life or death."
Speaking with Deadline, Zimmer addressed his long-time working relationship with Nolan, who he collaborated with on seven feature films, including The Dark Knight trilogy and Interstellar. Zimmer and Nolan's creative partnership ended when Zimmer passed on composing music for Tenet in favor of Denis Villeneuve's Dune, initially causing friction between them before they patched things up. Zimmer confirmed the two remain "good friends" and hasn't ruled out a reunion for a future project. However, Zimmer admitted working with him was a “life or death situation … our relationship has always been like this.”

Being a film composer usually means a life away from the limelight, their important work remaining behind the scenes. And then there’s Hans Zimmer. In recent years he’s become arguably the most front-facing composer we’ve ever had, his ‘Hans Zimmer Live’ tour selling out stadiums all over the world. If you weren’t able to make it to one of those thrilling events, Diamond In The Desert is more than just the next best thing; Zimmer and director Paul Dugdale have turned his stage act into an immersive, toe-tapping, head-bopping experience in its own right, complete with a bounty of funny, inspiring creative insights to boot.
It all starts with the music. Multiple smartly arranged gems from Zimmer’s envious, 40-year-plus catalogue are present and accounted for across the film’s two-hour-and 38-minute run time, including Gladiator, Dune, Pirates Of The Caribbean, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception,...

“I don’t write for directors, I don’t write for producers, and I certainly don’t write for movie studios,” Hans Zimmer says in his new concert film Hans Zimmer & Friends: Diamond in the Desert.
So, for whom does the Oscar- and Grammy-winning composer of more than 150 films including Inception, Dune and The Lion King write his iconic music if not the films and host of reputable directors he’s worked with across the past four decades?
“I have this fictitious figure in my head,” Zimmer tells Deadline from his Remote Control Productions studio in Santa Monica. “She’s called Doris. She lives in Bradford in the UK. She’s a single mom with two unruly kids and her hands are red from the cold and working really hard. She does an amazing job to keep these children fed and pay the rent and fight the fight. So,...

Hans Zimmer should be a noun-turned-verb, like Google, or at the very least a proper noun like Kleenex that now just means all tissues, name brand or not. When we’re talking about composing timeless scores (now known for the purposes of this review as Zimms), there are few who rival the scope and power of his work. On March 19 in select theaters, audiences will be treated to one of those rare experiences that truly exemplifies how much this music has meant to entertainment as a whole in Hans Zimmer & Friends: Diamond in the Desert. Chances are, you live with these musical notes pumping through your veins, and it could be so second nature you don’t even realize that with every squeeze of your heart, you’re shuttling themes from Pirates of the Caribbean from your aorta to your extremities, or receiving oxygen from notes of Gladiator backinto your right atrium.

A week after news broke of Pharrell Williams and director Michel Gondrey’s decision to shutter their highly anticipated musical Golden for Universal from its scheduled May 9 release, Williams premiered another film in Atlanta. All Day I Dream About Is Sport is a short film made with London-born photographer/filmmaker Gabriel Moses for Division and Adidas, with the title, when made into an acronym, playing off the sneaker brand’s name. Described as a “visual love letter to West African culture steeped in the everyday experience of life in Senegal,” it’s nothing like Williams’ big screen musical, which starred Janelle Monae, Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Halle Bailey. Rather, it puts a spotlight on the people of Dakar.
Those featured in the 20-minute film, which began its weeklong screening on Le Cinema Friday, span from an unborn child captured via ultrasound to the elderly to demonstrate the challenges of living.

Being a pioneer is a long, tough road. That's the theme of Kevin Costner's "Horizon: An American Saga" both on and off the silver screen, as the filmmaker's epic passion project concerning an ensemble of characters in the Old West struggling over a piece of untamed land continues to run into all sorts of obstacles in the real world. Chief among those obstacles is the question of any sort of release: after "Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1" was released in theaters on June 28th of 2024, it struggled to even get close to making its $50 million budget back at the box office, earning just $38.7 million. That figure, combined with the film's tepid critical reception, caused New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. to revamp its original plan to release "Chapter 2" of the saga on August 16th of last year, postponing the release seemingly indefinitely. This fate seems to be a current (and troubling) trend,...

When it was first reported that Universal Pictures had decided to permanently shelve Golden, a biopic about musician Pharrell Williams, the official line appeared to be that all involved agreed that it wasn’t fixable in its current state.
A joint statement, attributed to Williams and director Michel Gondry, said that, “When all of us got into the editing room we collectively decided there wasn’t a path forward to tell the version of this story that we originally envisioned.”
According to World of Reel, however, Golden's scrappage may not have been a quality control issue after all. The outlet reports that, weeks before it was shelved, the musical drama was test screened for an audience in Pasadena, and that far from being a disaster, Golden was warmly received.

Eternal Sunshine director Michel Gondry was in post-production on Golden, a biopic about Pharrell Williams. Universal has reportedly scrapped it.
Universal Pictures has reportedly – and rather drastically – decided to scrap a high-profile musical about Pharrell Williams. The news is an eyebrow-raiser for a number of reasons – first because it’s by a respected director, Michel Gondry, and second because it was fairly near completion.
Called Golden, the musical had an impressive cast which included Kelvin Harrison Jr, Halle Bailey, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Brian Tyree Henry to name a few. It would have contrasted tidily with last year’s documentary Piece By Piece, since that film (largely animated using Lego figures and bricks) covered Pharrell Williams’ musical career, while Golden, a narrative feature, would have explored his childhood.

It's been a long time coming. Technically, it's been seven years. That's how long it's been since British folk rock band Mumford and Sons toured. The band last toured for their fourth studio album Delta from 2018 to 2020. In the years since, the band has announced the departure of original banjo player Winston Marshall and released the single "Good People" featuring Pharrell Williams. That single was the first music released by the band since Marshall's absence. Now, the band is announcing a new tour for their upcoming album Rushmere, set to release on March 28.

Sometimes movies don’t make it to the finish line even ones that sound like a complete slamdunk. Our latest example is “Golden” (formerly known as “Atlantis“) a period musical that had a great on-paper collaboration between director Michel Gondry (“Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind”) and musician/artist/producer Pharrell Williams that was going to be released theatrically by Universal Pictures on May 5.

Variety reports that a movie musical directed by Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) about Pharrell Williams’s childhood has been scrapped in post-production and will not be released.
The film, titled Golden, was slated to be released by Universal Pictures and features a cast which includes Kelvin Harrison Jr., Halle Bailey, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Brian Tyree Henry, Janelle Monáe, Missy Elliott, Quinta Brunson, Anderson .Paak, and Jaboukie Young-White. While it’s rare for a studio to scrap a movie at this stage of development, this isn’t like Warner Bros. shelving Batgirl and Coyote vs. Acme for tax purposes. Instead, the film, titled Golden, was shut down after “unanimous agreement from producers and Gondry that the film did not live up to its developed conceit.“

Golden (fka Atlantis), Michel Gondry’s movie musical on the childhood of musician Pharrell Williams, has been scrapped in post-production, Deadline has confirmed.
Previously dated by Universal for a wide theatrical release on May 5, the film will never see the light of day, as it’s not being shopped.
In a statement shared with Deadline, Gondry and Williams attributed the decision to axe the project to their inability to fulfill the vision with which they had set out.

Though Pharrell Williams found success with his unconventional autobiographical Lego documentary, Piece By Piece, lightning won't strike twice for the "Happy" singer. Variety reports that Universal has permanently shelved his star-studded upcoming film, Golden, in post-production. Formerly going under the title Atlantis, the movie would've been a semi-autobiographical musical exploration of his childhood featuring a star-studded cast headlined by Halle Bailey and Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind director Michel Gondry at the helm. It was initially set to release in theaters on May 5.

Before attendees of the upcoming Met Gala become attached to any attire that might be deemed too outlandish or costume-driven, Anna Wintour and her fellow gala planners have decreed: It’s all about the tailoring — individually interpreted, that is.
On Tuesday morning New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, site of the May 5 Met Gala, announced both the event’s dress code and the host committee that will join the previously announced co-chairs of the starry evening, which raises funds for the museum’s Costume Institute. “Tailored for You” is the official dress code and reflects the theme of the exhibition, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” which opens to the public on Saturday, May 10, and runs through Sunday, October 26. An exploration of Black style from the 18th century through present day, “Superfine” will guide exhibition attendees through a cultural and historical look at dandyism and the roles clothing and style have played in Black identities.

President Donald Trump is considering a pardon for Pras Michel, the hip-hop legend facing 22 years in prison in a federal conspiracy and corruption case, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The U.S. Justice Department prosecuted Michel — the Grammy-winning rapper-producer best known as a member of The Fugees — for his part in a multibillion-dollar, globe-spanning scandal that the FBI deemed the “largest kleptocracy case to date.” The saga has brought down the Malaysian prime minister, a top Goldman Sachs banker and a key first-term Trump fundraiser. It’s also ensnared other high-profile Hollywood players, including Leonardo DiCaprio, who’d become close to the saga’s alleged criminal mastermind.
The White House didn’t respond to a request for comment. Michel declined to speak about the matter. In a statement, his publicist Erica Dumas tells THR that his legal team “is exploring all available options following his case,” adding, “we remain optimistic about potential paths forward.
