You never know when something you post on Reddit will be transformed into a Hollywood movie. THR reports that Sydney Sweeney is set to star in a new thriller based on Joe Cote’s Reddit short story titled “I pretended to be a missing girl so I could rob her family.”
No director is attached to the project yet, but Eric Roth (Forrest Gump) is writing the script. In addition to starring, Sweeny will produce the film through her Fifty-Fifty Films banner. The story centers on “a young woman who shows up at a family’s doorsteps ten years after their 18-year-old daughter went missing. Her plan is to convince the family she is their missing child, and stay just for one night — long enough to steal some valuables and get away.”

Hunger Games franchise filmmaker Francis Lawrence has signed a first-look producing deal with Lionsgate via his label about:blank.
Adam Fogelson, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair, made the announcement Wednesday.
Lawrence and his about:blank producing partner Cameron MacConomy recently finished production on Lionsgate’s The Long Walk, the feature take of the Stephen King novel starring Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson.
It was a year ago that Lawrence’s prequel The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes opened, ultimately grossing close to $350 million worldwide and sending the Lionsgate feature series based on the Suzanne Collins novels to $3.7 billion in global tickets sales.
“Francis’ ability to marry incredibly compelling characters and emotions with exciting and visceral action and spectacle is exceptional. He’s also a thoughtful, committed partner,” said Fogelson. “We are beyond excited to deepen our relationship.”

Lionsgate has renewed a three-year, first-look deal with Kingdom Story Company.
The announcement extends the partnership to 10 years and follows the theatrical release of “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” which opened to $11 million over the weekend. All three 2024 releases will be profitable for the studio, according to Lionsgate.

Fresh off success with their holiday family comedy The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, Lionsgate and the faith-based Kingdom Story Company have agreed to renew their three-year first-look deal, extending the studios’ total collaboration to 10 years.
The deal puts a capstone on Kingdom Story Company’s biggest slate yet, which comprised three films with Lionsgate in 2024: Ordinary Angels, starring Hilary Swank and Alan Ritchson; Unsung Hero, from Grammy-winning faith-based artist Joel Smallbone; and the aforementioned Best Christmas Pageant Ever, which exceeded tracking by opening with $11.1 million at the domestic box office this past weekend ($12.2 M/4-day) and is positioned to continue playing through the holiday period.
Dallas Jenkins (of The Chosen fame) directed the latter film, starring Judy Greer and Pete Holmes, which adapts the children’s book by Barbara Robinson. Each of the Kingdom-developed and produced films released this year is expected to turn a profit for the studio.

The Lionsgate earnings call this afternoon would not have been proper without addressing the elephant in the room: the studio’s deal with AI research firm Runway.
Announced on September 18, it was a first-of-its-kind partnership between a major Hollywood studio and Runway, which would create and train a new AI model customized to the studio’s portfolio of film and television content. Eyebrows, of course, were raised. What did that mean? Keanu Reeves’ likeness used in perpetuity across John Wick movies until the end of time? Complete, 100% AI-generated movies?
Lionsgate Motion Picture Chair Adam Fogelson sought to calm any concerns when asked by an analyst about the studio’s use of AI under this new deal.
“There were some questions when it was reported,” the exec said. “Once we clarified for our filmmaking partners, for our talent partners, exactly what this was, how it would be used, what it is,...

Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer was frank about the poor results of his studio at the box office recently, most notably “Borderlands,” which has shaped up to be one of the year’s biggest critical and commercial busts and led to the studio’s motion picture division generating a mere $2.6 million in profit for the quarter.
“Nearly everything that could go wrong did go wrong: it sat on the shelf for too long during the pandemic, and reshoots and rising interest rates took it outside the safety zone of our usual strict financial models,” Feltheimer said on an earnings call on Thursday.
Produced on a $120 million budget that was co-financed by Lionsgate with Avi Arad Productions, Picturestart, and 2K Games, “Borderlands” is an adaptation of the hit video game series of the same name and featured an ensemble cast that includes Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Ariana Greenblatt and Jamie Lee Curtis.

“Borderlands,” Lionsgate’s star-studded video game adaptation, is standing out as one of the biggest bombs at the box office this year. The film budgeted at $115 million earned just $32.9 million globally, a “disaster” for the studio considering the high hopes the studio had to turn into a franchise based on the game series’ huge popularity.
The performance of the film was so poor, Lionsgate could not ignore it during its earnings for the summer quarter.

When it came to the bombing of Borderlands, among other late summer and fall releases, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer made no bones about emphasizing culpa nostra.
“On Borderlands, nearly everything that could go wrong did go wrong: it sat on the shelf for too long during the pandemic, and reshoots and rising interest rates took it outside the safety zone of our usual strict financial models,” the Lionsgate boss said during Thursday’s on today’s earnings call to discuss second-quarter 2024 earnings.
The $120 million feature adaptation of the famed video game starred Jack Black, Kevin Hart and, most glaring of all, two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett in a renegade action role. The movie grossed $15.4M domestic and close to $33M worldwide. Lionsgate mitigates risk on its movies by selling off foreign rights. The Quanaissance continues! Ever since Ke Huy Quan made his Oscar winning Hollywood comeback in The Daniels' Everything Everywhere All At Once in 2022, the phone's been ringing off the hook for the former Goonies and Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom child star.
