Cruel Intentions will not return for a second season. The 2024 followup to the 1999 movie of the same name released its first (and now, only) installment last November.
The show endured a long road to release, starting first at Freevee in 2021 before moving to Prime Video in 2023. Before that, NBC had ordered and cancelled a different pilot inspired by the movie in 2016, and an attempted prequel series from Fox also never made it to air.
Amazon’s series starred Sarah Catherine Hook, Zac Burgess, Savannah Lee Smith, Sara Silva, John Harlan Kim, Khobe Clarke, Sean Patrick Thomas and Brooke Lena Johnson. Neal H. Moritz and Roger Kumble who produced (the former) and wrote and directed (the latter) the original film, also served as executive producers.

Amazon won't be moving forward with a second season of Cruel Intentions, the new TV series that served as a reboot of the 1999 film of the same name. The news comes four months after the show's debut on Prime Video in 2024.
Per Variety, Cruel Intentions has been canceled at Prime Video after one season. It's an unfortunate end for the series, which had to overcome some major hurdles in development to finally get made. The Cruel Intentions reboot was first announced in 2021 for IMDb TV/Amazon Freevee in 2021, though it was not officially ordered to series on Prime Video until late 2023.
Upon release, the reboot proved to be polarizing, garnering a Rotten Tomatoes approval rating of 24% with a much-higher audience score of 81%. The audience score was strong, but that alone may not have been enough to save the series. Exact viewership numbers are not known for the Cruel Intentions reboot,...

A lot of shows like Tell Me Lies are equally intriguing, dark, and relationship-focused as the 2020s drama series. After debuting in 2022, Hulu's Tell Me Lies drew solid reviews for overcoming a slow start to become a thoroughly engaging glimpse at the toxic relationship between Lucy (Grace Van Patten) and Stephen (Jackson White), two college sweethearts whose romance veers off course over time and the struggle they share to keep the pieces together. Based on the eponymous novel by Carola Lovering, the series jumps through time to depict the cornerstone moments of their relationship.
Part obsession thriller and part toxic relationship drama, Tell Me Lies joins several worthy TV dramas with a lot to say about the profound consequences one decision can have on a long-term relationship, and there are a lot of shows like Tell Me Lies. Prime Video’s Cruel Intentions TV show mixes drama and mystery in a modern version of the 1999 movie of the same name, and some movies and TV shows make for an excellent companion watch thanks to their similar themes and stories. Based on the 1782 novel Les Liaisons dangereuses and Roger Kumble’s 1999 movie, Cruel Intentions follows wealthy step-siblings Caroline Merteuil (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Lucien Belmont (Zac Burgess). When an anti-Greek movement threatens to end all fraternities and sororities, Caroline targets the vice-President’s daughter, Annie Grover (Savannah Lee Smith), who is joining her university.
Caroline knows that, if Annie joins her sorority, Delta Phi, it will be safe, but she needs Lucien’s help. They make a deal: Lucien has to seduce Annie and sleep with her so they can lure her into Delta Phi, and if Lucien achieves this, Caroline will finally sleep with him, but if he fails,...

The showrunners behind the Cruel Intentions reboot detail their plans for season 2. Debuting on Prime Video in November, and taking inspiration from the popular 1999 film starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, the new version focuses on the step-siblings Caroline Merteuil and Lucien Belmont who will do just about anything to maintain their status at Manchester University, including seducing the Vice President's daughter. The cast of the Cruel Intentions reboot includes Sarah Catherine Hook, Zac Burgess, Savannah Lee Smith, Sara Silva, John Harlan Kim, Khobe Clarke, Brooke Lena Johnson, and Sean Patrick Thomas.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunners and executive producers Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman address the possibility of the Prime Video drama coming back for season 2. While the showrunning duo makes it clear that they don't yet know whether the series will be renewed, they do have an idea about where the story could go next and it's related to the school year.

As Hollywood continues to remake past hits, it's no surprise that the '90s cult classic Cruel Intentions is now a Prime Video series. Starring Sarah Catherine Hook (First Kill), Zac Burgess (Boy Swallows Universe), and Savannah Lee Smith (Gossip Girl), this adaptation of the unforgettably devious 1999 film and Pierre Choderlos de Laclos's novel retells the sultry story of a bet between two wealthy and dysfunctional step-siblings in a modern-day setting.
Hook takes on the viciously manipulative Caroline Merteuil, inspired by Sarah Michelle Gellar's Kathryn, alongside Burgess, who acts as her playboy step-brother Lucien, based on Ryan Phillippe's selfish and brooding Sebastian. Caught in the middle of their mind games is Smith's Annie Grover, the inexperienced daughter of the U.S. Vice President, who's reminiscent of Reese Witherspoon's virginal Annette Hargrove.
Although the teen romantic drama pulls inspiration from the originals, the show stands on its own.

Prime Videos Cruel Intentions TV show introduces a new generation of wealthy and ruthless students, and it now has a confirmed major connection to the 1999 movie, but this actually hurts the TV show. Directed by Roger Kumble and based on Pierre Choderlos de Laclos 1782 novel Les Liaisons dangereuses, Cruel Intentions introduces the audience to wealthy step-siblings Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Phillippe), who make a bet for their entertainment: Sebastian has to seduce the new headmasters daughter, Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon), and sleep with her.

Cruel Intentions recently completed its first season on Amazon Prime Video with the story mirroring the plot of the 1999 film. But while the similarities were present, the show didn't share any obvious links to the movie.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, showrunners Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman explained how the series and movie are linked, suggesting that all the characters exist in the same universe. "The Merteuils are in the world somewhere," Fisher said, referring to the character played by Sarah Michelle Gellar in the iconic 1999 film. "Yes, they live in the same world," Goodman added. "[The movie] was just 25 years ago."

Prime Video's TV reboot of Cruel Intentions follows the students of Manchester College, an elite academy populated by manipulators, sociopaths, and their unwitting victims. Based on the cult classic 1999 film of the same name, as well as the original 1782 novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Cruel Intentions uses humor and its sharp satirical edge to cut through to the heart of its characters, users who don't care how many lives they ruin in their petty pursuit of political power.
Most of the Cruel Intentions cast are hot college students, but exceptions include Jon Tenney and Claire Forlani, who star as hot middle-aged parents. Twenty-five years later, “Cruel Intentions” will still make you blush.
The 1999 film about high-society stepsiblings Sebastian (Ryan Phillippe) and Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar) curing their privileged boredom by corrupting the last shreds of innocence in their peers feels both ahead of its time and like a movie that could never be made today. Littered with culturally insensitive language and driven by unbridled, often taboo sexuality, it was a cultural shock to the system in the waning days of the last millennium.
Replicating even a shred of that ethos was one of the many challenges facing this new version of the story. But perhaps the tallest order for “Cruel Intentions” was making a timeless tale of striving for power through sex feel relevant and revolutionary in the era of Gen Z,...

“Cruel Intentions” is getting a new life in Prime Video’s TV series adaptation, which takes the twisted tale to collegiate Greek life.
Sarah Catherine Hook and Zac Burgess star as Caroline Merteuil and Lucien Belmont, respectively, step siblings who strike up a malicious deal for Lucien to seduce the VP’s daughter, Annie Grover (Savannah Lee Smith), who Caroline sees as her ticket to make her sorority untouchable amid backlash for a controversial hazing incident.
The main characters follow closely in the footsteps of the 1999 movie, Selma Blair’s Cecile Caldwell transforming into Sara Silva’s CeCe Carroway. Sean Patrick Thomas also reprises his role from the movie as CeCe’s love interest, but with more of an age difference this time.

When co-showrunners Sara Goodman and Phoebe Fisher started adapting “Cruel Intentions” into a series for Prime Video, taking out the sexual tension between the central step-siblings wasn’t even a thought in their mind.
“It never even crossed our minds not to have [that relationship],” Fisher told TheWrap, with Goodman adding “part of what’s appealing about this … is we just ignored … a little bit [of] the rules of today. There’s no social media, and no one’s good or bad. Step siblings are still hot.”
Based on the 1999 classic film of the same name as well as 1988’s “Dangerous Liaisons,” the Prime Video series maintains the DNA of its predecessors, centering on a cruel deal between step siblings Caroline Merteuil (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Lucien Belmont (Zac Burgess) for Lucien to seduce naive newcomer Annie Grover (Savannah Lee Smith). In exchange, Caroline promises Lucien he can finally have what he wants: her.

In the late 1990s, “Cruel Intentions” hit theaters, adapting Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ classic novel into a fabulously scandalous teen drama. Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, and Reese Witherspoon became immediate stars after creating a picture that captured the raw, deceptive spirit of young, wealthy socialites. Prime Video has decided to revive this iconic narrative, moving its DNA from Manhattan’s exclusive prep school world to the ruthless landscape of Washington, D.C.’s Manchester College.
The 2024 remake reimagines the original’s central relationships through the viewpoint of contemporary collegiate Greek life. Caroline Merteuil and Lucien Belmont, step-siblings, are in the center, operating with the same precise precision as their predecessors. Caroline, the cruel Delta Phi sorority president, and Lucien, Alpha Gamma fraternity treasurer, uphold the heritage of psychological warfare and sexual exploitation.
This time, the stakes are higher than just a teenager’s reputation; they now entail political power.

Plot: Follows the elite students of Manchester College, a Washington, D.C.-adjacent university, where reputation means everything, fraternities and sororities are the gold standard, and two ruthless step-siblings, Caroline Merteuil and Lucien Belmont, will do anything to stay on top of the cutthroat social hierarchy. After a brutal hazing incident threatens the entire Greek Life system, they’ll do whatever is necessary to preserve their power and reputation – even if that means seducing Annie Grover, the daughter of the Vice President of the United States. Hearts will be broken, loyalties will be tested, and secrets will be revealed in this modern-day royal court that is Manchester College.

The original Cruel Intentions, an adaptation of the 1782 novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses, was one of my most memorable films growing up. It was sadistic, it had sexual tension, master manipulation, villainous step-siblings, and a small sprinkle of romance. Prime Videos Cruel Intentions series, developed by Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman, attempts to replicate what made the 1999 movie so memorable (and quotable) but smartly takes its own less merciless path and adds new elements. The main players and their goals are more or less the same, but theres less verve and danger in the execution.
Two ambitious step-siblings at a prestigious Washington, D.C. college will stop at nothing to keep their social standing. After a hazing scandal threatens their control, they resort to extreme tactics, including seducing the vice president's daughter, to safeguard their reputation and influence.

Twenty-five years after the release of the cult-classic film starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon, Sony Pictures TV and Prime Video are dropping a “Cruel Intentions” TV series. Adapted for television by Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman, this 21st-century retelling is a battle of wills between two volatile stepsiblings: the conniving and cross-wearing Caroline Merteuil (Sarah Catherine Hook) and the manipulative Lucien Belmont (Zac Burgess). Determined to preserve Greek life on their college campus, the pair team up to exploit freshman Annie Grover (Savannah Lee Smith), who happens to be the daughter of the vice president of the United States. While the show hits all the beats of the film, it lacks originality and the sultry sinisterness that made the movie’s main characters so alluring.
Hollywood seems intent on creating remakes of well-known IP. So, after years of delays, the resurrection of “Cruel Intentions” was probably inevitable.

Don’t worry, fans of the 1999 movie Cruel Intentions: the creators of the new adaptation for Prime haven’t forgotten to pay tribute to the classic Sarah Michelle Gellar starrer.
To help satiate the old fans while hoping to lure new ones, Showrunners Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman told an audience at Deadline’s inaugural TV Sidebar as the Scad Savannah Film Festival Saturday that they added multiple Easter eggs in the pilot to pay homage to the film.
They’ve already announced one big one: Sean Patrick Thomas, who starred as Ronald in the original, is back playing a professor in the new iteration that stars Sarah Catherine Hook (Caroline Merteuil) and Zac Burgess (Lucien Valmont) as the affluent step-siblings bent on causing mayhem. Prime Video has unveiled the enticing official trailer for ‘Cruel Intentions’ and announced that all eight episodes will premiere on November 21st.
Twenty-five years after the iconic film captivated audiences with its provocative drama, sex, and scandal, this series introduces a new class of cruel characters who are ready to take their games and manipulation to a whole new level.
In this new adaptation, the series follows the elite students of Manchester College, a Washington, D.C.-adjacent university, where reputation means everything, fraternities and sororities are the gold standard, and two ruthless step-siblings, Caroline Merteuil and Lucien Belmont, will do anything to stay on top of the cutthroat social hierarchy. After a brutal hazing incident threatens the entire Greek Life system, they’ll do whatever is necessary to preserve their power and reputation – even if that means seducing Annie Grover, the daughter of the Vice President of the United States.

Selma Blair would have considered making a cameo on Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming “Cruel Intentions” TV series — but was never asked.
“I knew it was coming but I can’t believe I haven’t seen the trailer,” she told Variety on Thursday’s Power of Women event, hours after the trailer for the TV adaptation came out. “Maybe there will be a cameo or something but no, I haven’t been asked anything. I’m excited to see it.”
Blair portrayed the innocent Cecile Caldwell in the 1999 film, which is based on the classic novel “Dangerous Liaisons.” In the movie, which starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon, Cecile fell for her cello instructor, Sean Patrick Thomas’ Ronald Clifford.
Thomas will appear in the upcoming Amazon series as Professor Hank Chadwick.

“Cruel Intentions” is headed to the cutthroat world of collegiate Greek life in Prime Video’s new reboot series.
The trailer for the new show, which debuts Nov. 21, introduces a new crop of upper class elites, with Sarah Catherine Hook taking the baton from Sarah Michelle Gellar as Caroline (changed from Kathryn) Merteuil, while Zac Burgess takes on a new version of Ryan Phillippe’s Sebastian as Lucien Belmont.
Like the 1999 movie, Caroline and Lucien are step-siblings with a salacious desire for one another, with Caroline leading her close-to-perfect sorority and Lucien being known as a campus-wide womanizer.
This semester, however, Caroline admits the sorority is “a little bit on the line this year because of the whole unfortunate hazing injury,” as the trailer flashes back to a formal event where a pledge’s head was hit hard by an unknown object.

After 25 years, several direct-to-video sequels and a failed pilot, a new generation is getting the Cruel Intentions treatment.
On Thursday, Prime Video debuted the first trailer for its series adaptation of the 1999 teen movie, all eight episodes premiering Nov. 21 on the streamer, bringing a familiar tale of deception to a new locale with all new characters.
The trailer has some nostalgic callbacks to the hit 1999 movie, including an upbeat cover of The Verve’s ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’, a familiar black convertible and an even more familiar rosary necklace with an unholy hidden secret.
Also consistent with the original, the series features a very indecent wager between affluent stepsiblings Caroline Merteuil (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Lucien Belmont (Zac Burgess), who rule the Greek system at Manchester College, their Washington DC-adjacent university.

The small screen adaptation of Cruel Intentions will stream on Prime Video, and details have landed for the show.
Cruel Intentions is a seminal teen film of the 1990s, planting the story of Dangerous Liasons firmly in late twentieth century youth culture, with star making turns from Selma Blair, Ryan Phillipe and Reese Witherspoon
It’s also the film that helped launch the big screen career of Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar.
Now, Cruel Intentions is heading to the small screen in a fresh modern take (we assume). Many versions of a television adaptation have been attempted in the past, including a 2016 pilot which saw Gellar reprise her role, but ultimately none of them were commissioned.
At one stage, a television version did see the light of day, but it was released as Cruel Intentions 2, thanks to some hasty re-editing in post-production (and it didn’t share the lead cast of the film).
Anyway,...
