The final Grand Slam on the tennis calendar, the US Open, begins play at the Usta Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, New York, on Monday, August 26. Can reigning champion Coco Gauff (pictured above) bounce back after a difficult summer that included an early exit from Wimbledon and a disappointing Olympic tournament? Gauff is seeded No. 3 at the US Open. Gauff’s repeat bid will be challenged by No. 1 seed Iga Świątek, 2024 Olympic bronze medal winner and current French Open champion. Other title hopefuls include Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina, Jessica Pegula, Jasmine Paolini and Olympic gold medalist Qinwen Zheng. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner might be the top seed on the men’s side, but No. 3 seed Carlos Alcaraz might be the man to beat after claiming both the French Open and Wimbledon titles this year. News recently broke of Sinner’s positive drug test, but he will not be suspended.

Novak Djokovic (pictured above) seeks a second straight (and fourth overall) French Open title, while 14-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal is likely playing in his final Roland-Garros event. Nadal faces a tough first-round opponent in No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev of Germany. Other contenders include 2024 Australian Open winner Jannik Sinner and 2023 Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz, though both have struggled with injuries of late. On the women’s side, Poland’s Iga Świątek is the clear favorite as she tries for three consecutive French Open wins. She’ll face the likes of two-time Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka and reigning US Open winner Coco Gauff. Tennis Channel, Peacock and NBC combine to televise and stream the tournament. NBC’s coverage also streams on NBCSports.

Los Angeles, March 18 (Ians) Zendaya and Tom Holland visibly squashed rumours that they had split after they turned up, “all loved up”, for the BNP Paribas Open women’s final at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in California, reports ‘Daily Mail’.
The rumours snowballed into a speculative tsunami in January after Zendaya had unfollowed Hollander on Instagram. It later turned out that Zendaya had done so with all the people she had been following.
Adding to the concern of fans, notes ‘Daily Mail’, was the fact that Zendaya and Hollander haven’t been photographed together since October 25, when they were snapped grocery shopping in Los Angeles.
The Emmy-winning actress, who plays a tennis coach in the upcoming film, ‘Challengers’, appeared in a tennis skirt and matching crop top at the tennis final, adds ‘Daily Mail’.
Seated in the stands, a polo-clad Tom cosied up to his girlfriend, and they shared a laugh.

Last year, Netflix's tennis documentary Break Point offered both fun and frustration to fans who were eager to see the sport's young talent introduced to a broader audience. Following closely along with players like Ons Jabeur, Frances Tiafoe, and Iga Swiatek as they ascended to the upper echelons of pro tennis was illuminating, but the year-long lag between filming and airing held the show back from being a true and vital companion to the ongoing tennis season.

ESPN is giving tennis players competing in the U.S. Open access to live streams of the tournament’s matches as a carriage dispute between Disney and Charter Communications continues to leave Spectrum customers in the dark.
An individual familiar with the matter confirmed to TheWrap that the live streams are being offered on a case by case basis to athletes and the sports network’s on-air talent who need it.
Daniil Medvedev can’t watch the US Open because his hotel has Spectrum:

In addition to disrupting tennis fans’ viewing experience, the ongoing carriage dispute between Disney and Charter Communications, which saw Disney linear networks, including ESPN, go dark on Charter’s Spectrum cable systems last Thursday, is wreaking havoc on players’ preparation for matches at the year’s final Grand Slam.
Superstars Coco Gauff and Daniil Medvedev shared their frustration over not being able to watch tournament matches at their hotel, with the latter admitting that he had to resort to bootlegged online feeds.
Even ESPN’s own John McEnroe, in his return to the commentators’ booth on Labor Day, referenced the fact that he didn’t watch as much coverage of the tournament as he would’ve liked while sidelined with Covid because of the Disney-Charter carriage dispute.

New York, Sep 4 (Ians) Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko maintained her clean sheet against Iga Swiatek, ending the World No.1’s US Open title defense with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory in the fourth round.
Swiatek’s loss on Sunday means World No.2 Aryna Sabalenka will overtake the Pole and ascend to the No.1 ranking after the US Open. Swiatek will have held the top spot for 75 consecutive weeks, the third-longest first-time streak in Wta Tour history.
Into her first US Open quarterfinal, Ostapenko will next face No.6 Coco Gauff. The two have split their two prior meetings, with Ostapenko knocking the American out of the Australian Open in January.
After taking the first set handily, a listless Swiatek found herself down 1-4 against Ostapenko. It was a deficit she could not overcome, thanks to Ostapenko’s solid service games, and the No. 20 seed assertively tucked away the set to force a decisive third.

New York, Sep 1 (Ians) World No.1 and defending champion Iga Swiatek dropped just one game as she stormed past qualifier Kaja Juvan into the women’s singles pre-quarterfinals at the US Open in New York on Friday.

With the victory, Jabeur has won 13 Grand Slam matches so far in 2023, which is the most Grand Slam matches she has won in a single year. The total surpasses her 12 Grand Slam match-wins from last year, when she reached the...

Cincinnati (US), Aug 17 (Ians) In a showdown between former Grand Slam champions, No.4 seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan held off Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko 6-7(6), 6-2, 6-4 on Wednesday to make the Round of 16 at the Cincinnati Masters.
Last year’s Wimbledon champion Rybakina took 2 hours and 17 minutes to pull off the come-from-behind victory on Wednesday night and edge ahead 3-2 in her head-to-head with 2017 Roland Garros titlist Ostapenko.
Rybakina will face Italian qualifier Jasmine Paolini on Thursday for a quarterfinal spot. Paolini defeated fellow qualifier Cristina Bucsa of Spain 6-1, 6-3 earlier on Wednesday.
On the other hand, World No.2 Aryna Sabalenka was also pushed to three sets in her opener, holding off No.192 Ann Li 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 to advance in 2 hours and 3 minutes.

Montreal, Canada, Aug 13 (Ians) Jessica Pegula beat World No. 1 Iga Swiatek in a three-set thriller to reach the National Bank Open final, here.
The 2021 and 2022 semi-finalist was able to bring her best to court at IGA Stadium on Saturday, capitalising on uncharacteristically erratic play from Swiatek and the disappointment of losing a tense second set to advance 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-4 in two and a half hours of play, reports ‘nationalbankopen’.
It was all Pegula to start the first semi-final of the day, as she was the first player to hold serve after four consecutive breaks to kick off play. While the top-seeded Pole was unable to find her range on serve and on her wickedly spun forehand, the American No. 4 seed was able to execute a tactical masterclass, constantly pressuring whichever of Swiatek’s groundstrokes were misfiring and delivering her counterpunches with typically perfect timing.
