The "Borderlands" series of video games are a unique breed: they can be thought of as action-oriented shooters, or they can be considered as character-based RPGs. Like so many "open-world" games of the last decade or so, they're structured in such a way that you could either spend your time curating a character and gallivanting across the wasteland of Pandora, or you could jump right into story-based missions and follow a scripted tale like the single-player games of old.

"Borderlands," the feature film adaptation, cannot possibly replicate the open-world aspects of the video game, so it must by default hone in on those story missions. As such, director and co-writer Eli Roth (with Joe Crombie officially co-credited on writing duties) attempts to distill the expansive universe of the "Borderlands" series into a coherent movie, and at least where coherence is concerned, does a pretty decent job.

In the distended field of movies and TV spun out of video games, there are blockbusters like Sonic the Hedgehog and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, long-running franchises like Resident Evil and lauded viewer favorites like The Last of Us. Many of them gain commercial traction — even a critically savaged dud like Assassin’s Creed did respectable business internationally. But there are just as many that probably should have been left on the console, like the role-playing first-person shooter game, Borderlands. Humor hasn’t generally been director Eli Roth’s strong suit, but neither is the constant bang-kapow of gunfire, explosions and violence in this stale and stubbornly unexciting sci-fi action comedy.

The big mystery is how such a noisy nothing of a movie landed the stacked cast, led by Cate Blanchett with as much conviction as the material merits. Borderlands was shot in 2021, immediately before Blanchett did Tár, and boy,...

A maddening self-contradiction, “Borderlands” is too messy and too neat, too much and not enough. That’s the consequence of trying to please two audiences at once in a time when entertainment consumers across all mediums are begging for unique points of view.

Gearbox Software’s sprawling video game series may be outright impossible to adapt, but Lionsgate placed its bet well when choosing Eli Roth to direct. In 2018, the typically hyper-violent horror filmmaker teamed up with screenwriter Eric Kripke (“The Boys”) to turn the children’s book “The House with a Clock in Its Walls” into a box office success. Like “Borderlands,” the PG mystery starred Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, a kid hero, and scads of CGI creatures caught up in a fantastical puzzle. The imperfect but spooky world Roth created then was miles away from the extreme gore that made him famous, but not uncharacteristic of his talents.

Kevin Hart is returning to the screens in his latest action/sci-fi Borderlands, bringing along with him actors among the likes of Ariana Greenblatt, Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Janina Gavankar. In a battle-filled piece that feels like a real-life video game, the star-studded cast will be embarking on the journey to uncover one of Pandora’s most explosive secrets.

But while the movie has some really promising action sequences lined up, it will still, seemingly, be holding back on the hard work Gavankar did to tone her body. This is because, while the actress poured her blood, sweat, and tears to get in shape for her role as Commander Knoxx in the upcoming movie, the film will be wasting it all by having her in full costume throughout.

An adaptation of the popular video game, Eli Roth’s Borderlands is finally set for big screen release this summer, and EW shares several first look images in a preview piece today. If that’s not enough, the final trailer has also arrived.

“We’re not retelling a story that we’ve told in the video games,” Randy Pitchford, the CEO of Borderlands creators GearBox, told EW. “We’ve created a cinematic universe that lives in parallel to the video game universe and can live in an independent timeline. It feels like Borderlands, but you don’t know what we’re going to do.”

As the Hollywood news cycle continues to churn with anticipation for the launch of Deadpool & Wolverine, presidential candidate endorsements, and enthusiasm for the increasing numbers of the summer box office, Focus Features is ready to make headlines by assigning a date for Steven Soderbergh‘s upcoming spy drama Black Bag. The studio says Black Bag opens in theaters on March 14, 2024. Focus will release the film in the US, and Universal Pictures International will handle international distribution.

Black Bag is a high-stakes mystery starring Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender, as well as Regé-Jean Page, Marisa Abela, Naomie Harris, Tom Burke, and Pierce Brosnan. Steven Soderbergh directs Black Bag from a script by David Koepp. Soderbergh and Blanchett previously worked together on his 2006 noir thriller The Good German. Additionally, Blanchett played a part in the film Ocean’s 8, part of Soderbergh’s Ocean’s 11 franchise. Soderbergh produced Ocean’s 8 but didn’t direct that one.

Filming wrapped on director Eli Roth‘s adaptation of the Borderlands video game series from Gearbox and 2K way back in June of 2021. A year and a half later, Deadpool director Tim Miller had to step in to handle the project’s two weeks of reshoots because Roth had the chance to finally – after sixteen years – make a feature based on the Thanksgiving faux trailer he put together for the Quentin Tarantino / Robert Rodriguez collaboration Grindhouse. It’s hard to shake the off-brand James Gunn feeling that is probably inherent to this type of movie at this point, but Roth’s Borderlands does look quite fun. Gunn is a master of threading story and deep character work into all the action, and this will likely sink or swim based on how well it does the same. For now, it looks and feels like Borderlands. And that’s a good start.

Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis and Kevin Hart are getting into some vicious shootouts in the first trailer for “Borderlands,” the long-delayed video game adaptation from Lionsgate that’s finally coming to theaters on Aug. 9.

Based on the popular first-person shooter series of the same name from Gearbox Software, “Borderlands” movie sees Blanchett lead the star-studded ensemble as Lilith, an outlaw who returns to her home planet of Pandora after being hired by weapons manufacturer Atlas (Édgar Ramírez) to find his missing daughter. To aid in her mission, Lilith assembles a crew with five other outcasts to explore the dangerous planet. Hart, Curtis, Ariana Greenblatt and Florian Munteanu play the other members of Lilith’s crew, while Jack Black voices the robot Claptrap.

The large ensemble cast will also include Haley Bennett, Gina Gershon, Cheyenne Jackson, Steven Boyer, Charles Babalola, Olivier Richters, Janina Gavankar, Benjamin Byron Davis, Ryann Redmond and Bobby Lee.
