The multiverse is everywhere, from the unstoppable Marvel machine to Oscar-winning films like Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) — and even dozens of fan theories about My Little Pony. Every single facet of entertainment has started toying with universe-hopping storytelling, and yes, that includes video games.
This year alone, over a half dozen games have created their own multiverses — like trading Npc allies with other Dragon’s Dogma 2 players across realities. There’s been a dramatic uptick in these kinds of explorations, and there’s a good reason for that, according...

The long-awaited Borderlands movie finally hit theatres on 8th August 2024 and has finally transitioned into digital media less than three weeks after its release. Directed by Eli Roth, the film has faced a turbulent journey from production to release, with reshoots, delays, and a significant creative overhaul. Despite its star-studded cast, including Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jack Black, the movie has been met with overwhelmingly negative reviews, holding piss poor 9% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. Our very own critic at High on Films called it the ‘worst movie of the year.’ Now, as more viewers are likely to pay attention to the video game adaptation after its lukewarm performance during the theatrical run, the chaotic and action-packed events that unfold on the desolate planet of Pandora, many may find themselves being puzzled by Borderlands (2024)’s various turns and ending.

The cast of the hugely popular 90s sitcom Friends was composed of some of the greatest comedic actors of their generation, and while theyre all still best known for their work on that project, theyve all been involved in some great movies and TV shows since the show ended. Friendss final season ended in 2004 after ten years of immense success, and while several of the actors could have easily never worked again, all six members of the main cast produced some of their best work in the years that followed.
In recent years, Friends has seen another huge surge in popularity since its been added to streaming services like Netflix across the world, introducing the show to a whole new generation and giving these actors careers another big boost. One of the things that makes Alan Wake 2 a masterpiece is its ability to juggle multiple tones. It’s a dark detective story. It’s a metafictional surrealist horror story. It’s got humor, scares, and even a full-on musical number. Remedy flexed their tonal muscles earlier this year with Alan Wake 2’s first Dlc, Night Springs, giving us three separate Elseworld-style stories all with their own thematic focus. These were charming little tales, but it feels like The Lake House, the game’s second and final Dlc, is the more substantial follow-up that fans of both Alan Wake and Control have been waiting for.
The story of The Lake House fills in some gaps in the main Alan Wake 2 narrative, showing how the Federal Bureau of Control ended up in Bright Falls when Alan returned. You play as the returning Agent Kieran Estevez, played by Janina Gavankar, who comes...

Remedy and Epic are keeping their word. After releasing Alan Wake II last October, fans will be revisiting the game with its next Dlc in “The Lake House” next month. The announcement was made during the Sony State of Play, and was accompanied by an appropriately creepy new trailer.
The new Dlc is set in an eerie new location on the shores of Cauldron Lake within the Federal Bureau of Control’s research station known as the Lake House. A catastrophic event has occurred, where reckless experiments have caused reality to collide with the Dark Place. This expansion unfolds parallel to the main game, putting you in the shoes of Fbc agent Kiran Estevez, portrayed by Janina Gavankar.

Borderlands movie breaks records with a disappointing 9% Rotten Tomatoes score, disappointing many involved. Cate Blanchett and eight other actors set personal record lows with their involvement in Borderlands. Director Eli Roth sees Borderlands as his worst-rated film on Rotten Tomatoes, with only a 9% rating.
Borderlands' Rotten Tomatoes score breaks several records, just not in the way everyone involved would have hoped. The first-ever live-action adaptation of 2K and Gearbox's popular video game franchise attracted top talent from across Hollywood. Lionsgate eventually landed Eli Roth as the director, with Cate Blanchett and others headlining Borderlands' cast of characters. The talent involved even grew through the movie's reshoots, which brought Deadpool's Tim Miller aboard to handle the additional photography. All this was done in the hopes that the Borderlands' reviews and the general response would be favorable, leading to a box office hit franchise.

Borderlands movie received negative reviews due to underdeveloped characters, lack of chemistry, and poor script and action sequences. The ensemble cast led by Cate Blanchett couldn't save the film, with critics noting the lack of character depth and believable relationships. Critics found Borderlands to be a wannabe Guardians of the Galaxy knockoff, with Cate Blanchett being the only bright spot in the film.
The Borderlands movie reviews are awful, and there are several reasons why critics' thoughts are so negative. With a director like Eli Roth and a Borderlands cast led by Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black, and others, there was originally plenty of hope that the film could continue Hollywood's relatively strong streak of producing good video game movie adaptations. But as the marketing continued on and production issues arose, concerns about the overall quality started to mount. It didn't help that Lionsgate held back...

In a galaxy far, far away, a psychotic wasteland dweller is strapped to a pole with explosives. Thirteen-year-old Tiny Tina comes skipping along, singing “Pop Goes the Weasel” before detonating the explosives and causing bits of the psychotic wasteland dweller to litter the landscape. She then introduces our hero to “the fine-ass ladies”—two explosive-stuffed rabbits named Mushy Snugglebites and Felicia Sexopants—who can help them with a major heist.
As juvenile as that description is, I wish I could tell you that Eli Roth’s Borderlands starts by directly copying an iconic scene from the Borderlands 2 game that introduces the ever-chaotic and maniacally performed Tiny Tina in an act of cartoonish violence. At least that would show that, like the games in the series, the film had some semblance of a personality, even if it’s a 4chan anon’s idea of one. And that would at least be...

Many video game fans will know that Borderlands is one of the most beloved action games of all time. Currently, there are four main games in the series, as well as some spin-offs and crossovers, but regardless of that, the series is undoubtedly one of the more popular ones.
In light of the recent successes of video game adaptations, a Borderlands movie was demanded by fans, and we now know that the movie is coming out today, but it seems that most fans will be disappointed, wishing that the movie – at least in this format – had never been made.
Namely, ahead of the US premiere of the Borderlands movie, which is happening today – on August 9, 2024 – the first critics’ reviews (for those who’ve seen the previews) are in and the critics have absolutely destroyed the movie, and it seems that the first audience reactions are also very disappointing.

This article contains major spoilers for "Borderlands."
The "Borderlands" series of video games are a unique breed: they can be thought of as action-oriented shooters, or they can be considered as character-based RPGs. Like so many "open-world" games of the last decade or so, they're structured in such a way that you could either spend your time curating a character and gallivanting across the wasteland of Pandora, or you could jump right into story-based missions and follow a scripted tale like the single-player games of old.
"Borderlands," the feature film adaptation, cannot possibly replicate the open-world aspects of the video game, so it must by default hone in on those story missions. As such, director and co-writer Eli Roth (with Joe Crombie officially co-credited on writing duties) attempts to distill the expansive universe of the "Borderlands" series into a coherent movie, and at least where coherence is concerned, does a pretty decent job.

In the distended field of movies and TV spun out of video games, there are blockbusters like Sonic the Hedgehog and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, long-running franchises like Resident Evil and lauded viewer favorites like The Last of Us. Many of them gain commercial traction — even a critically savaged dud like Assassin’s Creed did respectable business internationally. But there are just as many that probably should have been left on the console, like the role-playing first-person shooter game, Borderlands. Humor hasn’t generally been director Eli Roth’s strong suit, but neither is the constant bang-kapow of gunfire, explosions and violence in this stale and stubbornly unexciting sci-fi action comedy.

A maddening self-contradiction, “Borderlands” is too messy and too neat, too much and not enough. That’s the consequence of trying to please two audiences at once in a time when entertainment consumers across all mediums are begging for unique points of view.
Gearbox Software’s sprawling video game series may be outright impossible to adapt, but Lionsgate placed its bet well when choosing Eli Roth to direct. In 2018, the typically hyper-violent horror filmmaker teamed up with screenwriter Eric Kripke (“The Boys”) to turn the children’s book “The House with a Clock in Its Walls” into a box office success. Like “Borderlands,” the PG mystery starred Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, a kid hero, and scads of CGI creatures caught up in a fantastical puzzle. The imperfect but spooky world Roth created then was miles away from the extreme gore that made him famous, but not uncharacteristic of his talents.

As the Hollywood news cycle continues to churn with anticipation for the launch of Deadpool & Wolverine, presidential candidate endorsements, and enthusiasm for the increasing numbers of the summer box office, Focus Features is ready to make headlines by assigning a date for Steven Soderbergh‘s upcoming spy drama Black Bag. The studio says Black Bag opens in theaters on March 14, 2024. Focus will release the film in the US, and Universal Pictures International will handle international distribution.
Black Bag is a high-stakes mystery starring Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender, as well as Regé-Jean Page, Marisa Abela, Naomie Harris, Tom Burke, and Pierce Brosnan. Steven Soderbergh directs Black Bag from a script by David Koepp. Soderbergh and Blanchett previously worked together on his 2006 noir thriller The Good German. Filming wrapped on director Eli Roth‘s adaptation of the Borderlands video game series from Gearbox and 2K way back in June of 2021. A year and a half later, Deadpool director Tim Miller had to step in to handle the project’s two weeks of reshoots because Roth had the chance to finally – after sixteen years – make a feature based on the Thanksgiving faux trailer he put together for the Quentin Tarantino / Robert Rodriguez collaboration Grindhouse. The Borderlands reshoots have been completed, Thanksgiving has come and gone, and Lionsgate is now gearing up to finally release Borderlands into the world on August 9th… and with that date right around the corner, a featurette has arrived online to give us a look at the “dysfunctional family” of characters at the heart of the story. Lionsgate released the first trailer for Eli Roth's adaptation of Gearbox Software and 2K's Borderlands first-person-shooter video game back in February, and we now have a look at the movie's villains via a new batch of character posters (via GameFragger.com).
The banners spotlight Benjamin Byron Davis as Marcus, Gina Gershon as Moxxi, Janina Gavankar as Commander Knoxx, Olivier Richters as Krom, Edgar Ramirez as Atlas, Bobby Lee as Larry, and The Crimson Lance, who will likley serve as Stormtrooper-like canon fodder.
It seems each poster contains some sort of Easter egg. We couldn't spot anything, but maybe fans of the games will have more luck.
Check out the banners below along with the recent trailer.

The Way Back stars Ben Affleck as troubled coach Jack, tackling themes of alcoholism, grief, and personal redemption. Another Round, a 2020 film, explores alcohol abuse with a more lighthearted tone than The Way Back, offering a unique perspective. Another Round received better reviews than The Way Back for its high-concept approach and rich characters and themes.
The popularity of Ben Affleck's celebrated drama The Way Back is a great reminder to watch another 2020 movie with similar themes. Affleck stars as former high school basketball phenom Jack Cunningham and leads The Way Back's cast alongside his assistant coach Dan (Al Madrigal), his ex-wife Angela (Janina Gavankar), and his reluctant star player Brandon (Brandon Currett). The Way Back may not be based on a true story, but it mirrors Ben Affleck's real-life struggle with alcoholism. Affleck's performance as Jack is praised in the movie, marking a major comeback for the actor. The film is more about overcoming emotional toll than winning on the court, focusing on the effects of addiction.
Gavin O'Connor's The Way Back may not be based on a true story, but it carries enough parallels to reality and to other sports movies to feel like it is. The movie sees Ben Affleck portray Jack Cunningham, a former high school basketball star who has since fallen on hard times with the collapse of his marriage following the death of his son. While Jack's depression from the tragic events of his life drives him to alcoholism, he begins to rebound after being recruited to coach the struggling basketball team at his old high school.

The The Way Back cast goes beyond lead actor Ben Affleck. The movie stars dramatic actors and comedy actors alike, including Al Madrigal and Janina Gavankar. The Way Back also boasts a robust ensemble cast featuring memorable performers from Percy Jackson and The Thing.
The Way Back cast extends far beyond its lead star Ben Affleck. The 2020 basketball drama was directed by Gavin O'Connor (reuniting with Affleck after helming his action-thriller The Accountant) from a screenplay by Brad Ingelsby, who is the son of a basketball coach. The movie, which cost roughly $25 million, suffered financially in its theatrical release, only earning $15.5 million because it was released shortly before the Covid-19 pandemic shut down theaters worldwide. However, it was well received by both critics and audiences, earning 84% scores from both groups on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Way Back was one of a crop of titles that were released on premium VOD just weeks after their initial release.

"Tales of the Empire" is a new animated Star Wars series following dark side stories and origins. The miniseries will feature Grand Admiral Thrawn's ally Morgan Elsbeth and rogue Jedi Barris Offee. The entire "Tales of the Empire" series will stream on May the Fourth, deviating from weekly releases.
Star Wars has dropped the first trailer for the surprising Tales of the Empire, a new animated series releasing on May the Fourth. 2022's Tales of the Jedi miniseries featured never-before-scene moments in the lives of both Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku when he was still a Jedi. It’s hard to shake the off-brand James Gunn feeling that is probably inherent to this type of movie at this point, but Roth’s Borderlands does look quite fun. The trophy in The League, the Shivakamini Somakandarkram, is named after the high school valedictorian and is a dumb inside joke that the group finds hilarious. Despite everyone now having affection for Shivakamini, the league members can't bring themselves to take her picture down from the trophy, exemplifying their immaturity. Shivakamini is shown as mature, self-possessed, and frustrated by the childish behavior of the league members, making her the most enjoyable character to play a game with.
