Subhash K Jha, in a new feature in his Thus Day That Year series revisits Neeraj Pathak’s Irrfan Khan and Sunny Deol thriller, Right Yaaa Wrong.
Right Yaa Wrong was the surprise shocker of 2010. If you’ve forgotten that jump-out-of-the-seat feeling, then it’s time to nudge it to awake again. Debutant director Neeraj Pathak put together a thriller that’s as much a homage to Alfred Hitchcock and Brian da Palma as our own Abbas-Mustan and Right Yaa Wrong still emerges original and strong.
An intricate jigsaw that always stays a step ahead of the audience, Right Yaaa Wrong makes a penetrating comment on how the country’s legal system can be subverted in a clever hand. More importantly, the taut and briskly-paced script suggests that the yin and yang concepts of right and wrong are not only ambivalent but also interchangeable when the context is right.

Some films just get you interested for all the wrong reasons. Think about it. This is a sex comedy about a bored and boring man who wants to pep up his life with a bit of wife-swapping… hardly the kind of theme and film that would qualify as little more than an effort to titillate audiences with a whole lot of junk feud in the domestic ambience.
Strangely and refreshingly Mixed Doubles, which completes 19 years on February 10, transcends the inherent limitations of its genre. The pincer-sharp dialogues (Anurag Kashyap) and a handful of believable actors who seem to understand the inner world of their urbane characters help to create a sense of lived-in reality in this brief film about giggly grief.

Triptii Dimri Aashiqui 3 Exit (Photo Credit – Twitter/Instagram)
It was reported that Triptii Dimri would no longer be a part of Aashiqui 3, starring Kartik Aaryan. Rumours began to spread on social media. People said Triptii was removed from the film because she had become “too exposed.” They said the role required the female lead to have “purity in demeanour.” It was also suggested that her bold image in Animal made it hard for her to fit in Aashiqui 3.
Director Anurag Basu denied these rumours. He spoke to Hindustan Times and said, “Image was not the reason. I am the last person to judge an actor based on the other characters they have played on screen. Aashiqui was not even the story anymore… I don’t know the source of these stories which came out.”
Anurag explained further, “The most important thing is dates. Triptii is shooting for a film with Vishal Bhardwaj.

It has been 18 years since Madhur Bhandarkar8s drama Traffic Signal was released. Subhash K Jha revisits the film and shares some very intriguing answers the director gave when the film hit the big screen.
Life for Madhur Bhandarkar’s characters sucks. They’re often a victim of sexual and political abuse. And you’re inclined to turn away from their anguish. What redeems the people in Traffic Signal are their frailties and their unquestionable humanism. The director captures them in on a cascading and mutating canvas. We see lives frozen in a state of emotional and economical imbroglio.
The characters are often seen doing the metaphysical equivalent of picking their nose in public. There’s no shame in letting it all hang out as long as the characters are prone to probe their wounds in bouts of agonized satire.
If Page 3 probed the beau-monde with incredible emotional sharpness, Traffic...

Zoya Akhtar’s brilliant debut film Luck By Chance, which starred Farhan Akhtar, Konkona Sen Sharma, Rishi Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia, Juhi Chawla and Hrithik Roshan in a special appearance, released 16 years ago. To celebrate this outstanding film, we have a fascinating look back as Subhash K Jha revisits the film about films and shares some inside stories from the director about the making of Luck By Chance.
Luck By Chance, a truly out-of-the-box outstanding work of subtle, sly, satirical, and whispering art, is filled with people whom you’re bound to have met in the fetid corridors of Bollywood or the Hindi film industry, as the star-mother Dimple Kapadia insists on calling it. Never before has the film industry been perceived with such intuitively internalised abundance. A subtle splendour galvanised by performances that range from the credible to the incredible takes the narrative to pinnacles of expressiveness.

The Bengal Renaissance depicts a tale of a bygone era—a period that symbolizes Bengal’s encounter with a cultural revolution that redefined the course of history. Known as the cultural capital of India, Bengal cemented this status during this transformative time. Highlighting its engagement with liberalism and modernity, this intellectual and nationalist movement gave rise to a cultural elite that shaped the social and political landscape of Bengal and Kolkata (formerly Calcutta).
Within the Bengal Renaissance, one of the most significant phenomena was the emergence of bhadramahilas (educated women of the middle class). While striving to establish the supremacy of the bhadralok (educated male gentry), these women also created space for their own emancipation, both within the household and in the public sphere. Modern working women in the city draw inspiration from these pioneers. Among contemporary cultural icons, Aparna Sen stands as a living legend who...

It’s been 20 years if you can believe it, since Madhur Bhandarkar’s masterpiece, Page 3, was released. We take a look back at the film, which starred Konkona Sen Sharma, Atul Kulkarni, and Boman Irani.
Welcome to the beau monde, where everything is for sale, especially the conscience…where the rich and famous blow kisses in the air. As the humid room records their passionate pretenses, the emptiness of their ecstasy is exposed in recriminating rings of ricocheting realism.
The slimy Nri social climber is informed that a well-known socialite has committed suicide,
“Get me my fashion designer!”, he screams hysterically.
The funeral sequence that follows with all the deceased woman’s contacts and acquaintances shedding sobs into TV cameras is savagely funny and cruel, bitter and tragic.
Often, in the course of this mordant view of decadent elitism, you don’t know whether to laugh or cry. Or just...

It isn’t clear as yet why Vikrant Massey has decided to quit acting just when things are looking up for him after 12th Fail and The Sabarmati Report.
Long before these, Vikrant was immediately noticed as Ranveer Singh’s best friend in Vikramaditya Motwane’s Lootera. Ever since then Massey has been struggling to find his bearings in the film industry.
He was eminently watchable in the webseries Criminal Justice and Broken But Beautiful. Sadly films like Chhapaak and Haseen Dilruba seem to cast him as this millennium’s Vinod Mehra, that dependable actor who was typecast as the supportive co-star in women-oriented films in the 1980s.
Vikrant Massey awaited that one big explosion in his career. Konkona Sen Sharma’s directorial debut A Death In The Gunj did justice to Vikrant Massey’s talent. But no one saw that film outside film festivals. In A Death In The Gunj...

Indian actor Konkona Sen Sharma has been cast as the lead female protagonist opposite Carlos Bardem (“El Cid”) in the comedy feature “Mis(s)chief,” it was revealed at the Film Bazaar in Goa.
The project hails from U.K. and India-based production outfit Avani Films and is currently in development. It has advanced to the second round at the 2025 Sundance Development Labs as a curated entry.
“Mis(s)chief” will follow a mother of two trying to succeed as a filmmaker while navigating a failing marriage, the odd bullet from a gangster she has unwittingly managed to annoy and the never-ending schedule of her children’s homework. British filmmaker Peter Webber (“Girl With a Pearl Earring”) is on board as executive producer and Emmy-nominated casting director Nancy Bishop is assembling an international cast.
“I am delighted by the comic premise, the representation of women and the writing itself,” Sen Sharma said.

Ae Watan Mere Watan
It is strange, but director Kannan Iyer has directed just one other film in his entire career. Ek Thi Dayan in 2013 featured Konkona Sen Sharma as a, ha ha, witch. Which, if you think about it, is just the antithesis of what Sara Ali Khan plays in Iyer’s second film.
Ae Watan Mere Watan warmly embraces all the shining trophy-like atrophied tropes of desh-bhakti films, and yet succeeds in being a trifle removed from its flag-waving origins.
Sara Ali Khan, so far known for making faces on camera, withdraws into a quietly assured space to play Usha Mehta, a fierce nationalist who combated colonialism in her own way by manning an underground radio station propagating the views and ideology of Mahatma Gandhi while he, the Mahatma, was jailed.
Uniquely, the character Usha Mehta’s fight for freedom is in-sync with the actress’ flight into freedom.

Killer Soup
Starring Manoj Bajpayee, Konkona Sen Sharma, Nassar, Sayaji Shinde
Directed by Abhishek Chaubey
No wonder Manoj Bajpayee thinks Abhishek Chaubey to be the best director he has worked with. Look at the performance that Chaubey gets out of Manoj in Sonechiraiya and now Killer Soup.
There are two Bajpayees in Killer Soup, one of them with his wild hair and pained expression looks quite like Chaubey Himself. The other Manoj Bajpayee goes around with a mutilated eye which would be unbearable to look at were it not attached to the face of an actor who can make even the most unbearable character trait bearable with the sheer grit of his performance.
Manoj is at once fiercely satirical and slyly poignant as a puppet on his wife’s string. Konkona is everything evil, plus more. She seems to enjoy the opportunity to portray toxicity. I wish the thunderously scattered...

Killer Soup is Netflix’s latest in its piping roster of thriller shows (as well as shows about food). The Indian show is an almost Shakespearean comedy of errors-style story that is fun and fast-paced. At its heart, the show is about Swathi Shetty, a wife, a mother, and a woman who aspires to start her own restaurant in the center of her town, Mainjur. She’s wanted this since she can remember, and was promised by her husband that it would eventually happen for her; however, 20 years have passed and it’s all still the same. For now, Swathi’s story is quite a common one in the Indian household scenario. You’d imagine she would’ve let go of her dream with all these years gone by, but she’s very hopeful still. Her journey has only just begun, and something tremendously bizarre is about to happen that...

My first impression of Killer Soup was that this is a picturesque location that I would like to go to. Visually, this is an impeccable show. From the color grading that brings out the gold on everyone’s skin as if to say “We’re rich and fabulous” and simultaneously reminds us that this is a show about thieving and deceit to the stunning landscapes of small-town Tamil Nadu, everything is very tastefully presented (if you know what I mean). Before I go on screaming about how the stylization of this show makes it worth watching, I’ll give you a heads-up on what it’s about. “Killer Soup” is what one could call a biryani that looks delectable but keeps giving you cardamom and pepper kernels in every mouthful. This is a thriller about love, lies, deceit, passion, the rich, and the undeserving. Killer Soup follows the life of Swathi Shetty,...

The trailer for Netflix’s first major Indian series of the new year, Killer Soup, teases an aggressively strange dark comedy based “very, very loosely” on a “very, very real headline.” The series stars the acclaimed Konkona Sensharma as the femme fatale Swathi Shetty, and Manoj Bajpayee in the dual roles of her dimwitted lover and salacious slain husband.

2023 has been a mixed bag of a year for Indian cinema. There were some great highs, followed by unexpected lows. There have been some interesting blockbusters that surprised the audience, while many went below the radar. This is, however, a list of films we thoroughly loved and enjoyed. There are films in several languages that we believe could benefit those who love watching Indian mainstream and regional films.
Pathaan (Hindi)
Directed by Siddharth Anand, Pathaan marked the return of the blockbuster machine Shah Rukh Khan, with people flocking to the theater to watch his larger-than-life persona on screen. Shah Rukh Khan delivered one of the biggest hits of the year, and 2023 could not have received a better start. Despite its questionable storytelling and direction, the movie primarily worked for its star-powered cast and presented a villain that was not a caricature like the stereotypical negative characters we watch in other commercial films.
