Dave Chappelle made a rare awards show appearance at the 2025 NAACP Image Awards, where the comedian was honored with this year’s President’s Award.

During his speech, he thanked the NAACP for its efforts over its more-than-100-year-history and encouraged his fellow artists to keep working to tell their stories.

Chappelle, who recently won his sixth best comedy album Grammy and has won numerous Emmys in recent years but hasn’t accepted those awards in person, began by explaining why this honor was more important than the others.

“I won a lot of awards recently, but this one tonight is probably the most special award I’ve ever gotten, because it’s from this institution that represents these people, us, people of color, black people,” Chappelle, sporting a suit and tie, said when he took the stage, accepting his honor from NAACP president Derrick Johnson.

The 56th NAACP Image Awards, which honor the year’s best in Black achievement and excellence, wrapped up Saturday night by naming Keke Palmer its Entertainer of the Year, the group’s marquee award.

Deon Cole emceed the ceremony at the Pasadena Civic Center, where honorary awards were given to Kamala Harris, who received the Chairman’s Award; BET Media Group, which received the Founders Award; and Dave Chappelle, who received the President’s Award and gave an impassioned speech, saying he was “invigorated” in receiving what he called the most important award he had ever received.

Palmer, the multihyphenate actor-podcaster-host who won an Image Award earlier this week for hosting Password, beat out a loaded group for the Entertainer of the Year honor, winning over Cynthia Erivo, Kendrick Lamar, Kevin Hart and Shannon Sharpe.

Former vice president and 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris received a hero’s reception, including multiple standing ovations and enthusiastic applause, at the 2025 NAACP Image Awards, where she was on hand to receive the Chairman’s Award.

Seated in the audience with husband Doug Emhoff, Harris was introduced by NAACP board of directors chair Leon W. Russell.

“Against impossible odds, she gave America a campaign that was a force of nature,” Russell said of Harris’ 2024 presidential bid, which saw her ascend to the top of the Democratic ticket in late July after President Joe Biden ended his re-election effort. “No one else could’ve accomplished what she did, and no one else is more deserving of our gratitude.”

Harris, of course, ultimately lost the general election to the Republican candidate, President Donald Trump. However, she received more than 75 million votes after a campaign that lasted roughly 100 days.

Currently underway live from the Pasadena Civic Center, this year’s NAACP Image Awards is putting a spotlight on Altadena residents who have experienced devastating loss following the Los Angeles wildfires in early January.

“Homes were lost, stores destroyed, countless lives shattered and over two dozen souls gone forever, but what was not lost is the spirit of our community and our resilience, especially that of our brothers and sisters who live just a short distance from here in Altadena,” presenter Morris Chestnut said in his tribute.

The historically Black neighborhood houses generations of families, and was once home to renowned sci-fi writer Octavia E. Butler, whose Parable of the Sower has seen renewed popularity given its eerie prescience regarding Southern California’s recent natural disaster.

On stage, Chestnut introduced 22 Altadena residents who had lost their homes, prompting a standing ovation from the crowd of attendees.

“The Six Triple Eight” scored the outstanding motion picture prize at the 56th NAACP Image Awards on Saturday night.

The Netflix war drama film — based on the true story of an all-Black, all-female battalion in WWII — won awards earlier this week for ensemble, as well as breakthrough performance and supporting actress for Ebony Obsidian. This evening, Kerry Washington took home best actress in a motion picture, bringing the film’s NAACP Image Award wins to five.

“At a time when our history is under attack, to be able to tell a film that’s about how amazing Black women are and have always been, and to have it be a top 10 film in over 85 countries all over the world — to have it resonate so powerfully here in this country, it’s just a real honor,” Washington told Variety on the NAACP Image Awards red carpet at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.

Before the NAACP Image Awards’ main, televised ceremony kicks off Saturday night, some of this year’s winners were announced in a non-televised Creative Honors event on Friday night.

Nickel Boys, a six-time nominee, took home two awards, with director RaMell Ross winning for best directing in a motion picture and Ross and co-writer Joslyn Barnes winning best writing in a motion picture for their Oscar-nominated adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s novel.

Another double winner was Jennifer Hudson, who saw her eponymous daytime talk show win best talk series as she won best host in a talk series.

It’s been a long and stressful week for Deon Cole.

The 53-year-old black-ish actor and comedian revealed that he spent his birthday on Thursday (January 9) in the hospital.

As another winds down, it's always a good idea to take a spin on Netflix and see what you missed. That's exactly what I did for November 2024. And, I have to say, there were some really good and underrated shows that most Netflix viewers probably missed.

No, I'm not talking about the biggest shows. Everyone knows Outer Banks season 4, Cobra Kai season 6 part 2, and Arcane season 2 premiered in November. Those shows are all over the Netflix Top 10! Everyone was talking about those shows before the new seasons came out. Even A Man on the Inside, the new Netflix original series from Michael Schur and starring Ted Danson, was more hyped up than the shows we picked for this list.

A good political thriller is often decidedly of the moment, with enough meat on its bones to become timeless as it ages, and there’s certainly no shortage of material to draw on, given our current political climate.

The series from Stephen Belber begins when Muncie Daniels, played by Domingo, takes a break from his stressful life in Philadelphia as a TV host to write his book in the Poconos. There, Muncie witnesses a murder. Then, his life quickly begins to unravel as someone tries to pin the murder on him.

That's where things begin, but they do not stay there. It's quite the ride as Muncie tries to prove his innocence and get to the bottom of the mystery. Doing so, requires Muncie to find Mark Simon's killer and then convince the authorities to do something about it.

As a smooth-talking media and political pundit, Colman Domingo’s Muncie Daniels is used to commenting on politics and the news — not becoming the news — in The Madness. However, his fate will quickly change for the worse when we meet him in the new series. Colman Domingo is stepping out for the premiere of his new Netflix thriller series!

The 54-year-old Emmy-winning actor joined co-stars Gabrielle Graham and Marsha Stephanie Blake at the premiere of The Madness on Thursday night (November 21) held at the Netflix Roma Theate in Los Angeles.

Fellow cast members in attendance included Deon Cole, Tamsin Topolski, and John Ortiz.

In the new series, Colman stars “as media pundit Muncie Daniels, who must fight for his innocence and his life after he stumbles upon a murder deep in the woods of the Poconos mountains. As the walls close in, Muncie strives to reconnect with his estranged family — and his lost ideals — in order to survive,” according to Netflix.

Colman recently shared what excited him about joining the conspiracy thriller series.

The Madness hits Netflix on November 28.
