Every actor dreams of winning the most coveted award of all — the Academy Award — for their work. But there's one award they dread: the Golden Raspberry Awards, a.k.a. the Razzies. Some see it as unnecessarily cruel and mean-spirited, while others view it as a playful jab at a self-aggrandizing industry that sometimes deserves to be knocked down a peg, especially when the work isn't very well-made. Founded by UCLA film graduates John J.B. Wilson and Mo Murphy, the award inspires filmmakers and actors to "own their bad" (via the Razzies' official website)

In their over four decades of existence, its safe to say that no cinematic institution draws as much enthusiasm or disdain as the Golden Raspberry Awards or Razzies. Founded in 1981 by John Wilson and Mo Murphy, the Razzies were initially meant to function as a satirical counter to the Academy Awards, hosting an annual celebration of the worst movies of the year. But while some consider the Razzies a hilarious counter to how self-congratulatory the awards season can get, almost as many people find the show mean-spirited and just as prone to picking the easy targets as the Oscars.

After watching a double screening of Xanadu and Can’t Stop the Music, John J.B. Wilson and Mo Murphy created the Golden Razzies, awards that “honored” the worst of cinema throughout the year. Ever since, many in the industry have recognized that if a film infamously flops critically, financially, or both, there’s a chance its failure will be immortalized as a Razzie.

The Razzies acknowledged the elephant in the room at the 2023 awards – the organization gave itself a dishonor after nominating a 12-year-old for worst actress, sparking internet controversy.
Ahead of Sunday’s Academy Awards celebrating the year’s greatest achievements in film, the 43rd annual Razzies celebrated the “worst” actors and movies.
This year’s Razzie nominations were mired in controversy about the award body nominating 12-year-old actor Ryan Kiera Armstrong from “Firestarter” in January. After the internet erupted, the Razzies apologized, removed Armstrong from the ballot and introduced an age limit of 18 for future nominations. The Razzies put itself on the ballot, replacing Armstrong, and won in a landslide. In the awards video, “Razz Berry” said “Until our next mistake, cheers!,” accepting the dishonor.
“Blonde” received the top dishonor, taking home worst picture as well as worst screenplay. “Elvis” also took home two Razzies for Tom Hanks as worst supporting...

Hollywood’s bloated egos require some manner of annual deflation, especially during Oscar season. For more than 40 years, that has been the objective of the Golden Raspberry Awards. The Razzies, as they’re (un)affectionately known, have celebrated the best of the worst in film since 1980. The dubious honor has been accepted by such self-deprecating luminaries as Halle Berry (Catwoman), Ben Affleck (Gigli) and Sandra Bullock (All About Steve).
But evolving sensibilities have recently cast a shadow over the operation. In January, in response to social media backlash, the group rescinded its 2023 nomination of a 12-year-old actress (Firestarter star Ryan Kiera Armstrong). Not a year earlier, a fresh win for Bruce Willis and a decades-old nomination for Shelley Duvall were taken back — the former in light of his aphasia diagnosis and the latter for revelations of on-set mistreatment by The Shining director Stanley Kubrick. The Razzies began as a way to poke fun at fame.

Drew Barrymore criticised the Razzies for nominating 12-year-old Firestarter actor Ryan Kiera Armstrong in the Worst Actress category.
The parody awards group, which famously recognises films and performances they feel are the worst of the year, issued a public apology to Armstrong and confirmed her removal from the “final ballot” after her nomination drew intense backlash.
Barrymore was a child actor herself and even starred in the 1984 iteration of Firestarter when she was nine years old.
“I don’t like it,” Barrymore said of the nomination on CBS’s Talk of the Table on Thursday (26 January).
“Because she is younger and it is bullying,” she told host Gayle King. “I’m glad to see people didn’t jump on the ‘let’s make fun of her’ wave and instead said, ‘This isn’t right.’”
Barrymore spoke further about the controversy on her eponymous talk show, The Drew Barrymore Show.

The Razzies have taken an additional step in bettering their parody awards show after they received backlash for nominating 12-year-old Ryan Kiera Armstrong.
The group famous for recognising films and performances they feel are the worst of the year – formally known as The Golden Raspberry Awards – were met with serious criticism for including the Firestarter star in the Worst Actress category.
In a recent statement (via Variety), Razzies founder John Wilson issued a public apology to Armstrong, confirming her removal from the “final ballot”.
He additionally noted: “Having learned from this lesson, we would also like to announce that, from this point forward, we are adopting a Voting Guideline precluding any performer or film-maker under 18 years of age from being considered for our awards.
“We have never intended to bury anyone’s career. It is why our Redeemer Award was created. We all make mistakes, very much us included,” Wilson said.

Tomorrow is the big day when the Academy is set to announce this year’s Oscar nominees, and traditionally that meant that today was supposed to be the day that The Golden Raspberry Award Foundation announced the contenders for The Razzies, the annual set of awards that are unique in that they recognize the worst in the world of moviemaking instead of the best. This year things are being done a little differently over at Razzie headquarters, however. Apparently Razzie co-owners John Wilson and Mo Murphy want to emphasize the comedic nature of shaming people for doing awful work by announcing the awards on April Fools’ Day. Maybe that will take the sting out of things? Probably not, but it means the sting is going to get delayed. The Razzies aren’t going to give up riding the coattails of the Academy Awards completely, however. In order to fit into this new schedule of announcing the winners...

Razzies To Be Handed Out On April Fools' Day
The organisers of the Golden Raspberry Awards have pushed back the annual ceremony by five weeks - because they couldn't resist staging the prizegiving on April Fools' Day for the first time.
The trophies, known as Razzies, are given to the worst movies of the year, and usually take place the day before the Academy Awards.
The 2012 Oscars are scheduled for 26 February, but Razzie bosses are going against tradition to stage their ceremony on 1 April.
A statement reads, "John Wilson and Mo Murphy, co-owners of the Razzies, saw a unique opportunity to do something they've wanted to do since their awards were created in 1980: emphasise (its) comedic intent by unveiling the 'winners' of Tinsel Town's Tackiest Trophy on April Fools' Day."
Nominations for the awards will be announced on 25 February. Last year's big winner at the mock prizegiving was M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender - it landed five trophies, including worst director.

We’re used to the Razzie Awards taking place just before the Oscars paying tribute to the worst movies of the past 12 months but the organisers this year have moved the coveted award ceremony to April Fools’ Day, April 1st.
Previous winners include Sandra Bullock for the truly 2010 dreadful movie, All About Steve which co-starred Bradley Cooper and 2004 winner Halle Berry who won the award for Catwoman. In the year Bullock won, she also won the Oscar for Best Actress for he Blind Side which made it all rather amusing! Maximum respect had to go to both actresses who both turned up at the Razzie awards to pay tribute to the tripe they’d created! I’ve placed YouTube clips below with the acceptance speeches.Love Berry’s speech who mocks her own speech that she gave at the 2002 Oscars when she won Best Actress for Monster’s Ball.

The day Uwe Boll took a camera into his hands and thought "Ja...das ist gut" was a sad day for all. With little to no understanding of the cinematic psyche and a convenient German tax law, Boll decided to butcher the legend of many a fine videogame, leaving behind little credibility and a Rotten Tomato rating so low that you'd think he filmed it blindfolded.
With his direct-to-video mindset and minimalist budget Boll was seemingly unstoppable. Fans and critics worldwide pleaded with him to stop, even going as far as to start an online petition after Boll promised to stop should said petition reach a million signatures. And yet here we are, 2012, and Mr. Boll still walks amongst us; worse still, he's still producing films - his latest release, Zombie Massacre, is set for release later in the year.
