Chloë Grace Moretz (Carrie) has found her co-lead in The Edge Of Normal. Today, Deadline reports that the Kick-Ass actress will be joined in the serial killer flick by Rupert Friend. The actor has been pouring himself into the genre as of late, with his recent supporting role in Drew Hancock’s feature-length directorial debut, Companion. The thriller, which is eyeing a production start date sometime this spring, comes from helmer, Carlota Pereda, and will serve as the director’s first English-language flick. For those who haven’t seen it, Pereda’s most recent production, 2022’s Piggy, was a bloody and brutal entry into the genre, so we’re already expecting more of the same from The Edge Of Normal.

Jack Quaid addresses the possibility of reprising his role in the highly anticipated Scream 7. With Scream veterans Kevin Williamson and Guy Busick at the helm, the seventh installment of the horror franchise is set for a harrowing return with Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott once again leading the charge against the enduring murders and mystery of the iconic masked killer Ghostface. Quaid's character, Richie Kirsch, was unveiled as one of the Ghostface killers in the 2022 reboot. Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters on February 27, 2026.
In a recent interview with Et Online, Quaid responded to questions about his potential involvement in Scream 7. Quaid’s Ghostface reveal in Scream was an interesting twist for the slasher franchise, largely due to his established reputation as an awkward, yet charming actor in roles like The Boys and Star Trek: Lower Decks. His latest role in Companion continues to weaponize his "nice guy" persona.

The Boys star Jack Quaid is going to extremes to promote his new movie. The actor gets battered and bruised while sitting courtside at a Los Angeles Clippers game in a brilliant marketing stunt for Novocaine.
In the short clip shared by Pop Crave on X, Quaid can be seen watching the Los Angeles Clippers take on the Sacremento Kings alongside his Novocaine co-star Amber Midthunder. The actor, who is wearing a cast on his arm, seemingly gets more injured throughout the night. He eventually conducts an interview in the arena wearing a neck brace, with cuts and bruises on his face.

Drew Hancock’s global hit Companion is one of those do-or-die slick-flicks which blend genres and bend the rules of mass entertainment. The unexpected is heaped onto the plot with such weird nonchalance as if to say that cinema is not about fulfilling expectations but building them.
This is not an unwatchable film by any stretch of the imagination. Writer-director Drew Hancock sucks us into the vortex of the blind-dating game and then charts out a living hell for his heroine Iris (Sophie Thatcher), who is taken by her new boyfriend Josh (Jack Quaid) to a posh farmhouse in the back of the beyond. Iris should have known better. But if she had, there would be none of the carefully constructed calamitous happenings that swiftly swerve the romance into the horror-thriller genre.
And yes, there is science fiction, too…oh yes! Iris discovers she is a robot companion to Josh,...

It goes without saying that Stephen King has penned some great horror stories, and people take notice whenever he recommends a genre movie or TV series. From hailing overlooked horror shows like "The Midwich Cuckoos" to explaining why "Night of the Living Dead" is the scariest movie ever made, King isn't shy about expressing his opinions, and many people agree that he has excellent taste. With that in mind, King has now heaped praise on "Companion," the first great movie of 2025, adding to all of the acclaim the horror-comedy has received since its release.
"Companion: A totally fine horror/science fiction movie. (Also pretty funny.) I wish I'd seen it in the theaters, but watched it on Amazon Prime," the author wrote on Threads.
King didn't provide any more insights about the film, though he was probably wary of giving away spoilers. Directed and written by Drew Hancock, "Companion...

2025 has already provided fans with some intriguing horror movies. Companion focused on a female android having to become a killer to survive. In addition, Josh Ruben's Heart Eyes has done its own take on movies like Scream, but with a Valentine's Day twist.
The latter movie deals with a slasher known as Heart Eyes. The killer goes on a rampage to slaughter lovers on the romantic holiday. Interestingly, Ruben sneaks in a subtle reference to two pop culture icons that fly beneath the radar, all while hinting as to the big plot twist. This centers on Heart Eyes having its own Hobbs and Shaw, two major characters from the Fast & Furious movies.

The Brutalist (Brady Corbet)
Brady Corbet’s long-gestating architecture epic looks and feels as painstakingly crafted as its lead character’s intricate architectonics. For as barren and minimalist as László Tóth’s (a terrific Adrien Brody) designs are, they pack a beautiful, mysterious, occasionally revelatory punch, much like Corbet’s winding three-and-a-half-hour (complete with built-in intermission!) story about a Hungarian architect who immigrated to New York after WWII only to be mentally and emotionally sucked in by the tide of a momentous decades-long project initiated by a ruthless Pennsylvania business tycoon. Its scope is enormous––almost impossible not to get wrapped up in. A sense of impending gravity gives this film the weight of the real, as if we’re witnessing history.

With movie theaters struggling to pull in the same sized audiences they used to pull in before the pandemic, Hollywood has made considerable changes to their theatres-to-home media windows. Now, if a movie isn’t a financial hit, studios routinely release films to PVOD within weeks of their theatrical debut to capitalize on the publicity of theatrical campaigns. We’ve seen this happen over and over again with movies that didn’t perform up to expectations (such as The Fall Guy), and now New Line’s buzzy horror flick Companion makes its VOD debut only eighteen days after its theatrical release.

Rupert Friend is heading into the Berlinale a little anxious.
The British actor, a veteran of the industry with major roles in Homeland, Pride & Prejudice and, most recently, Drew Hancock’s buzzy thriller Companion, was only a “whip of a thing” when Chéri premiered in competition at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival.
“I was 25 and it was probably my first big lead role,” the now-43-year-old tells The Hollywood Reporter. “From the first 20 seconds, you just felt the audience… lean back. The movie finished and it was the sound of one, slow clap. I just died.”
After this “bombing” of Stephen Frears’ Colette adaptation, Friend was a little wary of the spotlight. It impacted him for a long time after, he confesses, even though he landed the part of a key character in the wildly successful Showtime series Homeland shortly after.

The teaser trailer for the gonzo horror-sci-fi comedy “Companion” released late last year stated that it was “from the studio that brought you ‘The Notebook.’”
This is cheeky, for sure, but it’s also technically true: “Companion” studio New Line Cinema was responsible for the beloved Ryan Gosling/Rachel McAdams romance. It works to offset your expectations, particularly because the next card reads that the movie is also “from the unhinged creators of ‘Barbarian.’”
More than just a funny marketing hook, the “Notebook”/”Barbarian” comparison also speaks to the vibe of the movie, described by the studio as “a new kind of love story,” which splits the difference between terror and tenderness as it traces the dissolution of a relationship over one chaotic weekend. That’s when Josh (Jack Quaid) and his robot companion Iris (Sophie Thatcher) find their relationship strained – and covered in blood. (The film has grossed a respectable $27 million worldwide so far.

While trailers do give away a number of significant plot points. Companion is sufficiently twisty as a comedy-inflected thriller that it gets away with a peek behind the curtain. Though it borrows significantly from genre, particularly science fiction and horror, its multi-hyphenate sensibilities make this closer to crime-gone-wrong antics like The Big Lebowski or Shallow Grave. There's a calculus of capers here. Bad decisions made by bad people don't just make situations worse, they make the movie better.
Writer-director Drew Hancock has plenty of TV credits, but this is a début feature. It's confident, even classy. While it does have smartphones and electric cars it could have been made in the 1970s, and I mean that as a positive. A single location, although extended with flashbacks and dream sequences, a single inciting incident, and plenty of strong performances. Its effects work is minimal. I look forward to a making-of featurette or.

Quaid is an actor with a fine list of acting credits to his name, though not many of those roles have seen him end on screen. With his role in Companion, Quaid has been killed exactly three times on screen, all by female co-stars.

It takes a special kind of actress to inspire sympathy and devotion from their audience, while simultaneously invoking an uncanny-valley creepiness through their performance. Sophie Thatcher effortlessly strikes this balance in her latest film project, Companion. Directed by Drew Hancock, Companion juggles android sex bots straight out of pulpy science fiction with all the blood and guts of a horror thriller. In one of her most stand-out roles yet, Thatcher plays the titular companion, Iris. Thatcher's star power dazzles, with her deep understanding of Iris as a character, she helps the sci-fi and rom-com elements of Companion mesh with the thriller pacing and psychological horror, all while making Iris a compelling and endearing protagonist.

Last weekend, Dreamworks Animation‘s Dog Man took a bite out of the top spot at the domestic box office while howling at the moon with $36M for its opening weekend. Drew Hancock’s psychological thriller Companion trailed behind Dog Man with a pooper-scooper despite favorable reviews (including one from JoBlo’s Tyler Nichols) for a $9.5M opening. As a spinoff of the Captain Underpants books by Dav Pilkey, Dog Man features a starry cast of voice talent, including Pete Davidson, Isla Fisher, Lil Rel Howery, Poppy Liu, and Ricky Gervais. The half-man, half-dog, all-cop animated comedy stands to lift its leg on the number one slot at the box office this weekend with an additional $16M-$20M, even as Super Bowl Lix looks to tackle a majority of audiences.

This weekend at the box office featured two new arrivals, with Dog Man and Companion, both of which performed well enough to take the top two spots. Companion fell in second place after opening with $9.3 million, well behind Dog Man's whopping $36 million, which was enough by itself to make it the highest-grossing movie of the year domestically. Companion has since added a few million to its total and crossed the $10 million threshold at the domestic box office, currently sitting at $11.2 million at the time of writing. The film has also earned $5.2 million internationally for a worldwide gross of $16.5 million. It has often been said that cinema reflects our collective anxieties, and in Companion, writer-director Drew Hancock zeroes in on one of our most persistent modern fears: the encroachment of artificial intelligence into the deeply human realm of intimacy.
At once a darkly comic sci-fi thriller and a razor-sharp satire on misogyny in the digital age, Companion takes well-worn genre tropes and injects them with a pulpy, anarchic energy. But while it boasts a game cast, a thrillingly unhinged lead performance from Sophie Thatcher, and some wickedly effective tonal shifts, the film ultimately struggles to distinguish itself from the weighty lineage of AI-fixated thrillers that precede it.
Thatcher plays Iris, a seemingly ideal girlfriend, meticulously dressed in 1950s technicolor housewife garb as she wanders through an eerily vacant supermarket in the film’s opening moments. This Stepford Wives-esque introduction sets the stage for the film’s biting critique of patriarchal fantasy—because,...

There’s a lot of good stuff coming down the pipeline for horror fans over the next year. Audiences have already been treated to Drew Hancock’s feature-length directorial debut, Companion, and also have titles like Osgood Perkins’ The Monkey, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, and Josh Ruben’s Heart Eyes to look forward to. Meanwhile, there are a slew of next chapters in already established franchises, like Final Destination: Bloodlines, The Conjuring: Last Rites, and the untitled I Know What You Did Last Summersequel. Mixed in with the others will be the return of the dancing AI helper turned hunter in Gerard Johnstone’s M3GAN 2.0. While not much has been released about the M3GAN follow-up at this time, save for a brief teaser set to Chappell Roan’s “Femininomenon,” audiences can’t wait to see the killer bot back in action following the 2022 breakaway movie.

Sophie Thatcher may not quite be a household name, at least not yet, anyway. For horror lovers of the world, however, she has quickly ascended the Hollywood ranks to become one of our modern go-to stars for high-profile genre fare. To that end, Thatcher is now headlining director Drew Hancock's "Companion," which /Film's Chris Evangelista hailed as the first great movie of 2025. Not only is the movie damn good, but it also had a damn fine opening weekend at the box office.
"Companion" opened to an estimated $9.5 million, debuting in second domestically behind the unexpectedly big animated hit "Dog Man" ($36 million), which hails from DreamWorks. Coming in second was by no means a bad thing, though, as Hancock's twisty sci-fi thriller cost a mere $10 million to make (before marketing). Considering it also pulled in $5.5 million overseas, it's well on its way to becoming profitable for Warner Bros. It might not be a massive hit,...
