As the volatile network news market continues amid declining ratings, slashed budgets and uncertainty among staffers, “CBS Mornings” is the latest program seeing significant behind the scenes changes, following similar reports at ABC News.
According to the New York Post, the morning show co-hosted by Gayle King, Nate Burleson and Tony Dokoupil is set to move back to its former home at the CBS Broadcast Center on West 57th Street in New York City after spending the last four years at its more luxurious and technologically advanced studio in Times Squares, located at 1515 Broadway.
“It’s all about saving money,” an insider at the network reportedly told the outlet. “This is another example of them [CBS News] not competing. It’s going back in time.”

CBS Mornings will move from its Times Square studio to the CBS Broadcast Center, with the relocation expected some time later this year.
The network’s news division has been cutting costs — as have other media outlets — and the CBS Mornings move is among a series of changes in recent months. A network spokesperson confirmed the move, which was first reported in the New York Post.
CBS Mornings has been in the Times Square space since 2021, around the time the network morning show unveiled a new format and Nate Burleson joined Gayle King and Tony Dokoupil as co-hosts.
The morning shows had all sought out visible space in highly trafficked areas of Manhattan. NBC’s Today has long had space on the ground floor at Rockefeller Plaza, while ABC’s Good Morning America has been in Times Square since 1999. But GMA is set to leave its broadcast space as well,...

CBS News has named Tom Cibrowski president and executive editor, tapping an ABC News veteran to lead the news division at a critical moment.
Wendy McMahon, president and CEO of CBS News and Television Stations and CBS Media Ventures, announced Cibrowski’s hiring Thursday morning. Cibrowski succeeds Adrienne Roark, the former CBS News president of newsgathering, who left for a job at Tegna earlier this month.
Cibrowski, however, will have a wider purview. Roark led newsgathering and editorial, but McMahon herself oversaw some key shows. Cibrowski will run all CBS News shows, as well as newsgathering and reporting units.
“Tom brings three decades of experience in broadcast journalism to CBS News, some of it here at CBS, where he served as a broadcast producer at The Early Show,” McMahon wrote in a memo to staff. “Everything he does is marked by a deep understanding of the news landscape, and he...

The next potential leader of CBS News has built up a lot of experience running newsrooms for ABC.
Tom Cibrowski, a former senior ABC News executive who played a big role in moving “Good Morning America” past NBC’s “Today” in the ratings last decade, has emerged as a possible candidate to take a senior role at CBS News, according to two people familiar with the matter, just as the Paramount Global unit faces one of its most challenging periods. Cibrowski would report to Wendy McMahon, who oversees news, local stations and syndicated programing for CBS.
CBS News declined to make executives available for comment. Cibrowski could not be reached for immediate comment. There is no sign that CBS News and the executive have signed any agreement and there remains the possibility that a deal might not come to fruition.

Lester Holt’s announcement that he’s soon leaving his position as anchor at “NBC Nightly News” is only the latest in a wave of departures. And it comes at a moment when the national TV news media needs all the help it can get.
Holt, renowned for his ability to anchor over long periods of time during breaking news situations, said in his announcement that he plans to devote his energies to the newsmagazine “Dateline” moving forward. But his departure from the 30-minute nightly telecast that — still — draws millions of pairs of eyeballs is the latest iteration of a trend. Before Holt, there was Chuck Todd, who outright left NBC News earlier this year after exiting the moderator chair at “Meet the Press” in 2023; Hoda Kotb, who left “Today” in January; and Norah O’Donnell, whose final broadcast of “CBS Evening News” aired last month as well. CBS News’ recent changes that were meant to entice viewers seem to be failing as the network’s Evening News program continues its ratings woes following the exit of longtime anchor Norah O’Donnell. Veteran journalist O’Donnell anchored her final episode of Evening News on January 23. She was replaced by John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois for a new-look version of the program, which took on a more 60 Minutes-style style magazine format. Rather than rattling through the headlines, the new show provides longer segments on specific topics. However, it appears the new format is struggling to connect with viewers, as CBS Evening News saw a 24 percent drop in the 25-54 demographic when compared to the same period last year, per Nielsen ratings. In comparison, David Muir‘s World News Tonight on ABC has seen an 8 percent annual gain in the 25-54 demographic, while Lester Holt‘s Nightly News on NBC has seen...

The debut episode of a retooled CBS Evening News tonight was notable for what it wasn’t: A showcase for a star anchor.
Rather, it opened with the dual anchor team of John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois getting right to the point in their top story — the “earthquake in the world of artificial intelligence,” or China’s breakthrough DeepSeek that gave a big shake to U.S. markets.
Then it was on to input from Washington, where Margaret Brennan weighed in against a tranquil backdrop of the Lincoln Memorial.
Later, Jim Axelrod did an extended story on Chinese espionage and Elizabeth Palmer reported on Hamas recruitment, later elaborating on their pieces with the anchors in studio. Mark Strassmann did an in-depth Eye On America story on the home insurance crisis, focusing on one man who lost his home only to discover his coverage wasn’t nearly enough to meet the rebuilding cost.

CBS is once again testing out new ingredients for one of its oldest, most recognizable programs, “The CBS Evening News.”
On Monday, CBS News jettisoned many of the signature elements of the program — the ones that are also utilized by its main competitors, NBC News’ “NBC Nightly News” and ABC News’ “World News Tonight.” Gone are the rat-a-tat story counts and main focus on the anchor delivering the headlines. In their place: fewer stories told with more depth and enterprise; a focus on reporters in the field; and elements that nod to the network’s venerable newsmagazine, “60 Minutes.” And perhaps a little “PBS NewsHour” on the side?
John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois served as guides of a sort, taking viewers through a longer-than-expected segment about insurance challenges for California residents affected by the recent wildfires and an investigative piece that examined Chinese intelligence efforts to recruit members of the U.

Norah O’Donnell’s exit from “CBS Evening News” Thursday night wasn’t what viewers might have expected. And the successor program that CBS intends to air in its place on Monday will have a similar quality.
O’Donnell bid farewell to viewers of the long-running broadcast after a surprise taped cameo from Oprah Winfrey which celebrated the anchor and showed many highlights of her tenure. O’Donnell thanked the audience for welcoming “hard news with heart into your homes,” and was spotted being surrounded by colleagues and family as the show’s credits began to roll. Coming Monday: a completely overhauled edition of the program that is taking pains to break many visual ties to the days when Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather told the nation what was most important at the end of their day.
CBS will launch a new “Evening News” that relies on a group of co-anchors, rather than a single person.

Updated with date change: Norah O’Donnell’s final night anchoring the CBS Evening News is now January 23, 2025, CBS confirmed Friday.
O’Donnell, who announced in July that she was exiting the role, was to have had her final show January 24, but because of CBS Sports’ coverage of the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open that day, the CBS Evening News will be a West Coast-only edition.
The network shifted the date by a day so O’Donnell’s final show can be a full, national broadcast.
As previously announced, John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois are taking over as lead anchors beginning January 27 as the CBS Evening News returns to New York as its home base after five years Washington, D.C.

CBS News takes this responsibility seriously. While there is no way to cover such sensitive issues without provoking some degree of criticism, we have a responsibility to address those concerns. This includes feedback regarding perceived bias in some CBS News coverage. We cannot let this negatively affect our legacy or our future, our mission or our connection to our viewers.

For TV-news outlets, 2025 is shaping up to be a year of out with the old and in with the….who?
With the economics of newsgathering less certain as info-hounds move to streaming and social media for their early facts, traditional TV-news venues have been parting ways with veteran anchors and correspondents. Whether the decisions are mutual or unilateral, amicable or adverse, they will leave places such as NBC News, MSNBC, Fox News, CBS News and CNN with fewer of some of their most recognizable faces at a point in the business cycle when viewership tends to narrow.
Hoda Kotb is taking a final lap this week at NBC’s “Today,” after deciding to leave the show and spend more time with her young children. Some of the nation’s biggest TV anchors saw the plans they had for Election Night change almost as soon as the first exit polls came in.
Early preparations for election coverage had called for hours and hours spent on sifting through what was supposed to be a neck-and-neck race. Instead former President Donald Trump quickly emerged as president-elect Donald Trump, while Vice President Kamala Harris’ supposed foundations among “Blue Wall” states like Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania crumbled throughout the evening.
The biggest audience tuned in to Fox News Channel, according to early Nielsen estimates that may change later in the day, followed by ABC News, and then MSNBC. From the late afternoon to the wee hours of the morning, the anchors had to keep level heads, and wait for the actual figures to come in before they could tell the full story.

Gayle King may not want to leave her day job anytime soon, based on her attempt to replicate a creepy look from a movie.
Earlier this week, Gayle joined CBS Morning co-anchors Vladimir Duthiers and Tony Dokoupil to interview actress Naomi Scott.
Scott stars in Smile 2, the sequel to the 2022 horror movie that premiered in theaters on Friday.
During the interview, Gayle praised Scott for her role as Princess Jasmine in the live-action remake of Aladdin and asked about her going “to the dark side” for her role in Smile 2.
Scott said she’s incredibly “proud” of the film and loves everyone who contributed to its creation.
“We put literal blood, sweat, and tears,” she said on CBS Mornings.
Gayle’s co-star remarked about her ‘cringing’ face
During the interview, Gayle King admitted that when she saw the movie, she had to watch a lot with her hands covering her eyes.

TV news insiders can tell you the moment that the world changed for high-priced anchor talent: Nov. 29, 2017, the day Matt Lauer was fired from NBC’s “Today” amid shocking allegations of sexual misconduct. As a quick fix, NBC News turned to Hoda Kotb to replace Lauer as co-anchor alongside Savannah Guthrie for the show’s primary 7-9 a.m. broadcast. And then the network braced for impact.
But the crash never came. “Today” ratings actually improved post-Lauer, who had been making around $20 million annually. That’s a testament to the show and the strength of Kotb and Guthrie as a team. And it was most definitely a wake-up call for the industry.
“You had this kind of myth built up that if this person leaves, the show is doomed,” one news veteran notes says. “It’s driven by the idea you’re afraid that if he leaves, everything comes crumbling down.

In a stark departure from its own corporate precedent and the usual circle-the-wagons approach of news divisions in crisis, top execs at CBS News parent Paramount Global have publicly disagreed this week.
At the center of the situation was an interview last week with author Ta-Nehisi Coates on CBS Mornings. While co-hosts Gayle King, Nate Burleson and Tony Dokoupil all sat in on the chat, Dokoupil drew criticism for dominating and pressing Coates on the section of his book, The Message, that criticizes Israel’s treatment of Palestinians. Dokoupil, who is Jewish, challenged Coates on whether he believed the state of Israel had a right to exist.
CBS News brass addressed the matter during a staff call Monday featuring Adrienne Roark, the president of editorial and newsgathering, and Wendy McMahon, president of CBS News and Stations. They told employees that Dokoupil’s questioning did not meet the news division’s “editorial standards.
