The List is bound to generate some water cooler buzz. Or is it Google Meets or Slack buzz these days? Either way, the new comedy starring Halston Sage (The Orville), Christian Navarro (13 Reasons Why), and Jonah Platt (Uncoupled) presents an interesting question: which celebrity would you sleep with if you were given the chance? Who’s on your “free pass” list? That’s Abby’s (Sage) dilemma in The List.
After discovering her fiancé (Platt) slept with a celeb on his free pass list, Abby and gal pal Chloe (Chrissie Fit) concoct a wild plan. Maybe Abby should pursue her own sleep-with-a-celeb list, so why not put a bevy of hunks right on top of the list? It’s all fun and celeb crushes until Abby meets Jake (Navarro), an L.A. waiter who has big dreams.

"That's so shallow. I love this for you." Universal has revealed an official trailer for a direct-to-vod sex comedy called The List, which looks as cheesy and cliche as you might expect from that title. It's written by two men, because of course it is, though it's directed by Melissa Miller Costanzo. After her fiance sleeps with a celebrity on his "free pass" list, Abby, with nothing but five names and the fantasies shared by millions, sets out for Los Angeles to sleep with someone from hers. Just as she starts to get close to living the ultimate dream in La La Land, things become complicated when Abby meets Jake, a waiter with big dreams of his own, who offers a fresh perspective. Starring Halston Sage as Abby, Christian Navarro, Lucy DeVito, Clark Backo, and Chrissie Fit, plus the hot guys: Rich Morrow as Mac West, Gregg Sulkin as Cooper,...

The new trailer for Universal’s romantic comedy “The List” teases Halston Sage and Christian Navarro finding love in a hopeless place – Los Angeles.
Abby (Sage) wasn’t expecting to add Jake (Navarro) to her dating itinerary, but after a rough breakup leads to her building a list of celebrity “free passes” and traveling to Los Angeles to court the rich and famous, his ambition and charm catches her off guard and flips her expectations of love on their head.
The romcom charts Abby’s personal reinvention when her fiancé cheats on her and sleeps with a celebrity on his “free pass” list. She and her best friend Chloe (Chrissie Fit) then come up with Abby’s own celebrity list of men to sleep with. But while tracking down a leading Hollywood man type, a waiter named Jake has her rethinking exactly what she’s looking for in a partner.

Independent cinema is at its best when it can launch a new star. Whether in front of or behind the camera, making a discovery is a highlight of the medium. In the case of the indie drama All These Small Moments, it serves to showcase a tremendous supporting turn by young Harley Quinn Smith. There’s a lot to like about this film, as it’s one of the few 2019 releases of really high quality, but Smith stands out. She hinted at this talent in her father Kevin Smith’s underrated Yoga Hosers, but this really hammers it home. She’s someone to watch out for. The movie is an indie drama, centered on a young man’s coming of age. For Howie (Brendan Meyer), his entry into adulthood is taking place as his parents (Brian D’Arcy James and Molly Ringwald) are seeing their marriage crumble. Every single day,...

"I know what you've been looking for, I'm not stupid." Orion Pictures has released the first official trailer for an indie drama titled All These Small Moments, from first-time filmmaker Melissa Miller Costanzo, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. Shot on the streets of New York City, the film is about a struggling family, and one teen boy who is infatuated with an older woman he notices on the bus. Described as an "absorbing coming-of-age tale with heartfelt, nuanced storytelling and genuine intimacy." All These Small Moments stars Brendan Meyer, with Jemima Kirke, Molly Ringwald, Harley Quinn Smith, Brian d'Arcy James, Salena Qureshi, and Roscoe Orman. At first glance, this reminds me of Noah Baumbach's The Squid and the Whale, about a dysfunctional NYC family and all the issues they have. It’s called All These Small Moments for a reason — one that becomes clear with a final, out-of-nowhere moment of voiceover narration in case you hadn’t figured it out yourself by acknowledging how formative, complex, and emotionally draining each one of writer/director Melissa B. Miller-Costanzo’s dense scenes prove. Whether her current focal point is young Howie Sheffield (Brendan Meyer), one of the other teenagers at her disposal, the older object of his affection (Jemima Kirke’s Odessa), or his on-the-brink-of-divorce parents (Molly Ringwald’s Carla and Brian d’Arcy James’ Tom), you know each vignette will pack a surprisingly potent punch. The question becomes whether they earn that potency or culminate into something greater than their individual selves. And while I may lean towards “No,” the whole is still worth a look.
The film appears to want to work as a story from Howie’s singular vantage.
