Onir, director of the brilliant Queer drama My Brother… Nikhil talks with Subhash K Jha about making the film, which is still celebrated 20 years after the release of the moving film.
Onir, 20 years down the line My Brother…Nikhil remains a milestone in queer cinema?
I only feel gratitude that with the film I became a filmmaker from dreaming to being one in the world’s largest film making industry. Humbled for having received love for the film for last two decades and having been able to create my own identity as a filmmaker.
My Brother… Nikhil also started your longstanding collaboration with actor Sanjay Suri?
My association with Sanjay started before My Brother…Nikhil. If I am filled with gratitude for twenty years of Mbn, I also celebrate twenty-five years of collaboration with my friend /actor/producer Sanjay Suri.
The film still has an indelible impact?

Subhash K Jha revisits Onir’s delicately drawn Queer drama, My Brother… Nikhil, which starred Juhi Chawla, Sanjay Suri, and Purab Kohli, as it clocks 20 years since its release.
There was something happening to Hindi cinema in 2005… Something strange, stirring, exciting, and pathbreaking. After Madhur Bhandarkar’s Page 3 and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black, you would think our cinema has given enough of the unconventional palate for the audience to chew on.
Not so! In My Brother… Nikhil, an intimate and yet far-reaching study of family ties, social castigation, and the resilience that makes the human spirit ride over daunting adversities—much like the swimmer-hero of debutant director Onir’s heartwarming film who rides the oceans … until oceanic events overtake his well-ordered life.

Playing a wretchedly unhappy scion of a criminal family in Kanu Behl’s crime drama Titli in 2015, Shashank Arora defined a new-age protagonist who was just a face in the crowd until you rubbed him the wrong way.
In Rock On 2 , Farhan Akhtar, Arjun Rampal, and Purab Kohli rightly hogged the limelight. It was the enormously talented Shashank Arora who, as the new recruit in the band, got the sur of his character right even though he had the least amount of space to grow. The lad was hungry for opportunity. He grabbed what he got with both hands.
The promising young actor entered a completely new world of crime grime and slime in Titli. “It was very tough. The difficulty was not as much the criminal mindset but in creating his body language and motives, which stemmed from his experiences. Workshops were what really helped me lose this upper middle class demeanour,...

Subhash K Jha revisits Farhan Alhtar and Vidya Balan’s Shaadi Ke Side Effects, which released in 2014.
“When I do something wrong, I say sorry to my wife. When my wife does something wrong…. I say sorry to my wife.”
One of the gems that flows out of Farhan Akhtar’s mouth while addressing the oldest question on the gender equation is: What does a woman really want in a marriage? Could it be the same things as a man? Maybe the route taken by the two individuals is different.
Director Saket Chaudhary raises some pertinent questions on the fake road signs that could lead to an aborted marriage. Not all of the winking homilies work. But the film holds together primarily because of the intelligent writing and the sharp and crisp way the two main actors interpret the parts of the two individuals in a marriage that has a lot going for it,...

Actor Purab Kohli spoke to Subhash K Jha about family, career and turning 46 in this special catch-up Birthday interview.
Life begins at 40. So that makes you 6-years-old. How do you look at your journey so far?
Well, I wish I was six. Actually, I wish I was 16, which is, I think, a good age. But then again, 46 is also fantastic. I think I feel so mature now, you know, I mean, compared to what I was when I was 16 or 26 or 36. 36 to 46 has been an interesting decade, I have to say.
A British wife, two lovely kids, a home in London, and a career in Indian cinema. What more can you ask for?
I have a nine-year-old girl and a six-year-old boy. The last time I met you, which was probably around the release of Jal in 2014, I was single, you know, and now I’m married with two kids; how life moves!

In this special chat Purab Kohli talks with Subhash K Jha about his first film, which released 23 years ago.
Purab, it’s 23 years since you made your big screen debut.
23 years of Bas Yun Hi. Wow, I didn’t even realize it was 23 years of Bas Yun Hi. Thank you so much for remembering. Feels like a long time ago, my first film actually. So it’s 23 years of having my first film release. And also, if I remember correctly, I think Bas Yun Hi was probably one of the first films that was released during the new birth of the multiplex cinema.
Bas Yun Hi was a very unusual debut?
The memories of doing the film were just fantastic because it was shooting all in Bangalore. It was my first sort of solid outdoor kind of shoot with like-minded people and we had such a great time doing it.

A look back at Raja Krishan Menon‘s 2003 debut directorial Bas Yun Hi as it celebrates 22 years. We also get some insight as the director talks with Subhash K Jha.
The young 20-nothing metro-waasi never had it so good. Or bad. After Freaky Chakra where a freaked-out sutradhar, played by veejay Ranvir Shorey, gets all foamy and frustrated when he can no longer control the destiny of the characters he creates, this time another veejay turned, ahem, actor Purab Kohli sets up a fey doll Veda (Nandita Das) to woo a superstitious friend Rohan (Rajiv Gopalakrishnan) as a joke and then behaves like Aamir Khan in the post-interval half of Dil Chahta Hai.
The prank gets a yucky yank when stupid Cupid, the devilish matchmaker Aditya, realizes he loves flaky Veda for himself. He sulks like a brat being denied his favourite television show and finally grins when she consents to be his girl.

We’re hearing rumbles that a new British film is heading our way sooner rather than later from director John Jencks. The Hippopotamus director is helming Promenade, a Brighton set whodunnit, next and the project has just started filming, we hear.
The announcement comes with an ambiguous tagline: “50 Cast, 12 Stories, 1 Plot. No Heroes.” Colour us intrigued.
Here’s a synopsis for the film: In Brighton on the South coast of England, sharpened by the sting of sea spray, and mellowed by numinous light, a tight-knit community of oddballs and heart-felts live together in a tatty old mansion, the Fletcher Apartments. When a golden feather, the priceless antique mascot of the building, unexpectedly disappears, the residents have a mystery to solve. Blind (JioCinema)
Okay, so first things first. Blind is remake of a Korean film. It is not the first Indian remake of the 2011 film. In 2021, there was a Tamil version Netrikann. Prior to that, there was a Chinese and Japanese version as well.
This is to say, Blind is popular subject for remakes. The Hindi one, just out on the free-for-all JioCinema platform, is not as powerful as Netrikann. But I must say Sonam Kapoor Ahuja looks as pretty playing blind as Nayanthara in the original.
The underrated Purab Kohli is the serial killer on the prowl. Not enough bite to his bark. There is so much barking going on, what with a friendly canine playing a pivotal role. The plot has a few heartstopping moments of suspense especially when the killer gives the blind heroine a ride on a car where he has a dead woman in the trunk.

Mumbai, July 7 (Ians) Crime thrillers are engaging and often edge-of-the-seat experiences that do not necessarily have great performances. The first requirement of such a film is that all the characters — from the suspects to the law enforcers — need to be convincing.
A remake of the Korean thriller ‘Blind’ (2011), originally remade as the Tamil ‘Netrikann’, which came out on Disney+ Hotstar in 2021, the Sonam Kapoor-headlined film centres around a blind police officer in search of a serial killer. What’s unusual is fashionista Sonam Kapoor essaying the role of tough cop Gia, who is seen shooting a bullseye at a firing range.
Not that professional actors can’t play roles that demand a complete departure from their screen image; what is important for them is to get under the skin of the character without retaining any traces of their erstwhile screen appearances.

Criminal Justice: Adhura Sach (Disney+Hotstar)
Starring Pankaj Tripathi, Shweta Basu Prasad , Purab Kohli, Swastika Mukherjee
Directed by Rohan Sippy
“Juvenile cases make me uneasy,” confesses cop Gauri Karmakar(Kalyani Mulay) to her senior as they stroll to the scene of the crime where a 12-going-on-10 year old girl has been murdered.
Gauri,if you remember, had marital issues with her husband in the second season. Men in Criminal justice don’t like their women working. Our lawyer-hero Madhav Mishra can barely tolerate his wife’s ambitions as a beautician.
Luckily , Criminal Justice: Adhura Sach doesn’t get into gruesome details of the crime. This is not to say that proceedings are conducted on a superficial level. The astutely conceived story is intriguing: the whole culture of pushing a juvenile star into premature stardom , and not allowing Zara(Deshna Dugad) to grow any older than 10 as that’s the age...

Bob Biswas(Zee5)
Starring Abhishek Bachchan, Chitrangda Singh
Directed by Diya Annapurna Ghosh
With that affable angelic semi-smile and eyes that never tell lies, Bob Biswas, as played by Abhishek Bachchan in one of his finest performances, looks like anything but an assassin. But there you have it. A bhadralok who looks like anything but a killer, snuffing out lives as though on a population-control drive.
Bob’s first murder is so sudden unexpected and the target is guilty of such a minor social transgression that I burst out laughing when it happens. Young debutante Diya Ghosh’s film is a puzzle of a film. The killings aren’t meant to be funny(they never are). But some of them are so incongruous with the mood of the moment that one can’t help laughing at the sheer absurdity of it.
At heart, Bob Biswas is a very sad film.

Mumbai, Jan 27 (Ians) Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor Ahuja gave a quirky twist to singer and global superstar Rihanna's popular song Umbrella, and it is all about promoting social distancing.

"Sorry RiRi, no one can stand under my umbrella... Need to maintain safe distance!" she wrote as caption.
With another couple of pictures, in the same dress, she earlier wrote: "I love throwing on an oversized jacket and painting the town red… you can definitely coat me on that!"

Director Girish Malik is known for his previous outing Jal (2013) with Purab Kohli, Tannishtha Chatterjee, Kirti Kulhari. His latest release Torbaaz with Sanjay Dutt leading the cast, talks of war and terror, and the toll such things may take on children. The film infuses the idea with the power of sports - in this case it is the usual suspect - cricket - to unite & heal.

Actress Mouni Roy, who will soon be seen in the digital film, London Confidential, opposite Purab Kohli, says that lockdown taught her some of the greatest lessons in life.
The actress, who is currently in Dubai, told, "I realized a few things during lockdown that we otherwise never get a chance to sit down and analyze. I have understood that, in reality we need very little to feel happy because happiness is there in the small things of life. At times we just gather a lot of stuff in our house for no reason. In normal life, we tend to engage ourselves in many things that are otherwise irrelevant! If we want, we actually can stay away from such things!"
"I have also realized that as human beings we will come across different emotions like anger and being upset, but it is also very easy to drop these negative emotions if we work on these.
