Filmmaker Ishan Shukla, whose dystopian sci-fi animation film ‘Schirkoa: In Lies We Trust’, which will have its world premiere at the prestigious 53rd International Film Festival of Rotterdam (IFFR) smiles, “Well, it may sound all cool now, but believe me, I was really worried that time — what if I don’t get a job after the animation course? Of course, I don’t generally admit that,” he tells Ians.
While he did get a job in Singapore, in less than a year it started getting boring for him.

Long format, procedural as well dramatic shows and teleplays added to the diverse viewing experience of audiences on the small screen in 2022. They brought along with them ample thrills, chills, and psychological intrigue. Here is our pick of the best, immersive entertainers from this lot.
The Fame Game
You may argue that the series that heralded Madhuri Dixit Nene in the Ott space frittered away its potential at the end but a second season may just redeem it. When I first saw the second season of Delhi Crime my initial reaction was relief. Thank God, the second season turned out to be as gripping, if not more than the first season. When “Bellbottom,” starring Akshay Kumar, releases on Aug. 19, it will be the first major Bollywood film to release in Indian cinemas after a quarter devastated by the deadly second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Only 50% of screens in India have reopened and many of them are operating at reduced capacity. The rest, including those in the Western Indian state of Maharashtra, home to Mumbai and the Bollywood and Marathi-language film industries, remain closed.
The film is an 1980s-set thriller set against the backdrop of a spate of Indian Airlines hijackings by forces hostile to India. Kumar plays an Indian secret agent code-named Bellbottom.
The film is produced by veteran producer Vashu Bhagnani’s Pooja Entertainment (“Coolie No 1”) in association with Emmay Entertainment (“The Empire”).

Tenet became the only major movie to release in theaters in the middle of lockdowns earlier this year. Despite being the latest offering from star director Christopher Nolan, with a cast of popular new actors, the film was unable to make much of a dent at the box office and directly led to Warner Bros. deciding to release the rest of their upcoming movies online on HBO Max at the same time as in theaters. In an interview with The Washington Post, Nolan revealed that he was not responsible for Tenet's theatrical release. Rather, it was the studio that made the call.
"The studio made the decision to release the film in the summer in parts of the world where it was safe to open the film because of the response to the pandemic in those individual countries. And I think they made a good decision. . . . A lot of...

For other filmmakers, the tradition is to drop hints and clues, also known as Easter eggs, from their previous movies in their later works. In true time-bending fashion, filmmaker Christopher Nolan has revealed that an Easter egg for his latest movie Tenet actually showed up in one of his earliest films, 2000's Memento.
"I had this notion of just a bullet getting sucked out of the wall and into the barrel of a gun. It's an image that I had in Memento"-the film literally starts with a bullet flying out of a wall, through a man's skull, and back into a gun-"to demonstrate the structure of that movie, but I always harbored this ambition to make a film where the characters had to deal with the physical reality of that. In a way, an idea comes to the fore when the time is right for it, and it's a hard process to quantify,...

New Delhi, Dec 10 (Ians) Actor Denzil Smith claims his talent is appreciated more abroad, adding that he stumbled upon this fact while working with Hollywood filmmaker Christopher Nolan on his film, Tenet.
"I learned that my talent is appreciated internationally," Denzil told Ians while discussing his takeaway from the project.
"(I learned) that I am able to communicate on a larger level (internationally). I learned that it is a pleasure to work with people who share your vision and when you are in sync," he added.
Nolan's new film is a spy thriller that takes one on a thrilling time-bending mission with two secret agents, essayed by Robert Pattinson and John David Washington.
Asked how did he stay in touch with the complex plot, the "Delhi Crime" actor said: "One understands it as one goes along."
"He (Nolan) gives you the background of the scene. There's no great complexity when you are doing your part.

After the global lockdown dealt a deathblow to the theater industry, Christopher Nolan's time-bending thriller Tenet was long touted as the magic cure for the industry's ailments due to low attendance. Unfortunately, the film's box-office earnings were not enough to provide cinema halls that much-needed financial boost. In an interview with the LA Times, Nolan explained his take on Tenet's financial performance.
"Warner Bros. released Tenet, and I'm thrilled that it has made almost $350 million. But I am worried that the studios are drawing the wrong conclusions from our release - that rather than looking at where the film has worked well and how that can provide them with much needed revenue, they're looking at where it hasn't lived up to pre-[lockdown] expectations and will start using that as an excuse to make exhibition take all the losses from the [global emergency] instead of getting in the game and adapting - or rebuilding our business,...

Christopher Nolan is known for crafting complex, mind-bending blockbusters that are as challenging as they are entertaining. But writing a complex central female character has never been Nolan's forte. The same is true of the filmmaker's latest movie Tenet, where Elizabeth Debicki's character of Kat has been accused by some of being reduced to the role of a damsel in distress. In an interview, Debicki defended her character against such claims.
"I found [Kat] to be very complex. Some people have said things to me about how she's captive or that there's a kind of victim situation. And I don't deny it because what I loved, in a way, was that it was really drawn into her in the beginning and we do find somebody who's become victim to the circumstances of her relationship with her husband. But what I also found intriguing and what I found to be really there,...

Bollywood period espionage thriller “Bellbottom,” starring Akshay Kumar (“Pad Man”), and directed by Ranjit Tewari (“Lucknow Central”) has wrapped its Scotland shoot, making it one of the first projects globally to start and complete its entire shoot during the coronavirus pandemic.
Producers Pooja Entertainment (“Coolie No. 1”) flew the 200-strong crew in a chartered flight to Glasgow and quarantined them for 14 days, creating a bubble, and completed the film in a 45-day schedule over August and September.
The unit worked closely with Scotland’s Screen Commission and adhered to Covid-safe guidelines. Besides medical-grade PPE, and required distancing, the production made it mandatory for all cast and crew to wear a watch that constantly monitored their oxygen levels, body temperature, blood pressure, stress levels and pulse. A centralized dashboard constantly recorded the parameters of the entire unit and kept a check for any changes in readings.

One of the most highly-anticipated movies of the year, Christopher Nolan's Tenet, was finally released last month. The movie offers a sci-fi twist on the classic spy genre. Audiences are loving the dashing suits and formal wardrobe of the characters in the movie. In an interview, the costume designer of the film Jeffrey Kurland explained how a specific era of James Bond inspired Tenet's fashion choices.
"[Tenet] can't be totally irrelevant [to James Bond]. If you're making a movie like this then Bond is the kingpin. It's like the big kahuna. But you want to make it different. I was more creating the Sean Connery Bond than anything else. Not necessarily suit styles but the way the suit is worn by the character and the way he looks in the suit, and I was trying to go beyond that. Blockbuster filmmaker Christopher Nolan is known for being an intensely private person, who shuns public attention unless he has a new movie to promote. The filmmaker recently made a rare appearance on social media in a news item unrelated to his new film Tenet, when Regal cinemas Tweeted a picture of Nolan with his wife Emma Thomas outside one of their theaters.

Nolan has visited the cinema not once but twice since theaters reopened, and not just to watch Tenet. Instead of spending money on tickets for his own film, Nolan is said to have watched Tri-Star's Broken Hearts Gallery, and Armando Iannucci's Searchlight feature The Personal History of David Copperfield.
Naturally, there is a deeper meaning behind Nolan's desire to be photographed coming out of a cinema hall wearing a mask.

At long last, Christopher Nolan's highly-anticipated spy thriller Tenet has arrived in theaters in America. The movie had opened in Canada last weekend, and together the two territories have provided Tenet with a cumulative haul of $20.2M to date at 2,810 theaters. Adding in the money from foreign markets, the movie's box-office adds up to a reasonable $150 million worldwide gross.
While such box office numbers would not have been anything to get excited about until as late as last year, in a post-lockdown world where theaters are struggling to stay open, Nolan has managed to draw an impressive crowd to cinemas based on his fan following alone. The marketing around Tenet had kept specific plot details under a tight wrap, meaning the only impetus for audiences to brave the threat of infection and go to theaters was the desire to watch a new Christopher Nolan movie.

In an interview with Cinemablend, Nolan revealed that one of his favorite shots to film using a 15 perf 70mm IMAXcamera was actually one of the least necessary ones.

As the son of screen legend Denzel Washington, you would think actor John David Washington would be immune to fanboy moments while working in films. But there are still people in the industry who can make him go weak in the knees, and it seems Sir Michael Caine is one of them. Two people were injured Sunday in Singapore when a ceiling partially collapsed during a screening of Tenet at the Shaw Theatres Nex Mall.
“It hurt because a piece of the ceiling hit my head, and my heart was racing. It was really confusing because we thought the sounds from the crashing was from speakers behind us,” one viewer called Venkat told Must Share News (Ms News), a local web publication.
The collapse happened around 5 Pm local time. That’s when a large section of the ventilation duct crashed through the ceiling, hitting attendees seated in the area. One of the injured was transported to the hospital by officers from the Singapore Civil Defence and Singapore Police Force.
“Unfortunately, two patrons were injured. They were quickly attended to by our staff and then by paramedics who arrived. They were subsequently taken to the hospital,” a spokesperson for the mall told Channel News Asia.

Tenet might not have released in most parts of the world yet, but the Christopher Nolan-helmed movie is already being touted as the greatest action film ever made by a guy who knows a thing or two about cinema, veteran actor Michael Caine, who took to Twitter to lavish praise on the movie and its director.
Chris Nolan has done it again.

But then, he was also a part of Nolan's Dunkirk, and that did not stop Caine from calling 1917 one of the best war films of all time instead. The actor has appeared in every Nolan film since Batman Begins, to the extent that some see him as the filmmaker's lucky mascot,...

For many Hollywood bigwigs, Christopher Nolan's highly-anticipated movie Tenet is the ultimate litmus test in terms of whether audiences are finally ready to return to theaters to save the business of cinema halls. As one of the biggest film stars in the world, Tom Cruise showed his support for the film by posting a video on Twitter of himself attending a screening of Tenet.
In the 34 second video, Tom Cruise is showing driving to the theater with director Christopher McQuarrie, sitting in the cinema with other attendees, and remarking how great it is to be back in a picture hall again. As the actor left the theater after the movie ended, a fan asked how he liked the movie, to which Cruise responded that he loved it.

Travis Scott and Christopher Nolan teaming up for a project might seem like a highly unlikely occurrence at first glance. But that is exactly what happened on the filmmaker's latest project Tenet, which will have a track by the best-selling musician interspersed with composer Ludwig Göransson's score for the highly-awaited film. Nolan told GQ that Scott's contribution to the project was nothing short of profound.
"His voice became the final piece of a yearlong puzzle. His insights into the musical and narrative mechanism Ludwig Göransson and I were building were immediate, insightful, and profound."
For his part, Travis Scott seemed equally impressed by the rushes of Tenet that he has seen so far. Very few details regarding Nolan's latest magnum opus have been revealed to the general public, with the actors and crew members keeping a strict vow of silence on social media and in interviews about anything other than the general plot,...

Filmmaker Christopher Nolan may have moved on from Batman, but the shadow of the Dark Knight was cast over his latest production Tenet, in the shape of Robert Pattinson, one of the leads in Nolan's new movie, who is also set to play Batman in Matt Reeves' upcoming trilogy. In an interview with The Irish Times, Pattinson recalled trying and completely failing to hide his audition for the role of the Caped Crusader from Nolan.
"It's funny because Chris is so secretive about everything to do with his movies. And then I had to be really secretive about Batman stuff. So I had to lie to Chris about having to go for a screen test - I said I had a family emergency. And as soon as I said 'it's a family emergency' he said: 'You're doing the Batman addition, aren't you?'"
