“It must be pretty embarrassing needing a babysitter in high school,” someone once told the 14-year-old at the heart of My Babysitter’s a Vampire. Being stuck with a sitter on a Friday night would definitely be mortifying for just about any teenager. However, Ethan Morgan (Matthew Knight) changed his tune when the most popular senior girl from school, Sarah Fox (Vanessa Morgan), arrived at his house that fateful evening. This schoolboy’s elation soon became abject terror as his caregiver was revealed to be a bloodsucking creature of the night. As it turned out though, Sarah was no ordinary vampire; she refused human blood and was intent on spending what looked to be her final days slaying her own kind.

A decade before Knight and Day was released, a movie like it would have killed with audiences: Come on, it starred Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz and looked to perfectly mash humor and action in a way that so few male/female-led action-comedies had for years. Yet, it didn’t connect. But why? There are a lot of reasons, really, and not just, as Roy Miller would say, “one of those things.” Through lousy marketing, hokey promotion, poorly timed sneak previews, and even Katie Holmes, Knight and Day fizzled, less “beautiful dress” than beautiful mess…But it did at least inspire a Bollywood remake, so suck on that, Vanilla Sky! Let’s find out: What Happened to this Movie?!
Knight and Day began, as with so many Hollywood screenplays, as a spec script, or a work that is uncommissioned but written in hopes of selling it to a studio (think...

Whether as a witch or an Army wife, Catherine Bell has been doing a lot of television business lately.
The "Jag" veteran essentially has been playing two series roles for several years, if one takes her recurring part as the seemingly magical Cassie in Hallmark Channel's "Good Witch" TV movies into consideration along with Denise Sherwood, the sometimes brutally realistic character she plays weekly when the Lifetime drama "Army Wives" is in season.
"The Good Witch's Charm" -- the fifth entry in the franchise -- makes its Hallmark debut Saturday, Oct. 27, immediately after a marathon of the four earlier films. Business owner, small-town mayor, stepmom and new biological mom Cassie never has been proven to be an actual sorceress, but that confirmation might be closer as a reporter's (Geordie Johnson) interview with her reveals a strange phenomenon and goes viral ... bringing an unwanted form of attention to Cassie and her locale.

Watching the trailer for the Canadian-produced TV movie My Babysitter’s a Vampire (making its American premiere Friday on the Disney Channel), the most glaring thing I couldn’t wrap my head around is why a kid that far in his teens still needs a babysitter – a babysitter that looks to be the same age as him.
Is this boy a juvenile delinquent? Is he a total sissy? Are his parents super overprotective? What’s the deal? And is it really a good idea to pair a teenage boy almost assuredly experiencing hormonal overdrive with a really cute girl of an appropriate age for him to engage in the sort of carnal activity the adult film world has taught me always happens whenever an attractive babysitter is hired? That doesn’t seem right at all. Same reason I think it should be illegal for women to order pizza or hire...

It's rare to see a movie's tone conveyed so instantly as it is in Finn on the Fly. Not seconds after inserting the Finn into the DVD player, Baha Men's “Who Let the Dogs Out?” rang throughout my apartment like a Winterfest dance from 2001. I had to turn it down immediately. I don't need neighbors passing judgment on me, thinking I'm listening to the Baha Men's most overplayed and irritating song, or perhaps watching...well, any number of the movies that song is used in, save for The Hangover. And it was only funny in that movie because it's a goofy song. Anyway, I'd love to ask the filmmaker why he included that song. What is your defense, Mark Jean, for using that dreadfully overplayed and agonizing song in your movie? Is it because the word “dogs” is in the chorus? From what I've read, a lot of...

As if any more proof were needed, The Grudge 3—the third in the American series based on Takashi Shimizu’s Japanese screen quartet, the first to go direct to DVD and the first of any of these not helmed by Shimizu—demonstrates that this concept has been well and truly exhausted. Particularly given that this sequel was created not by untried up-and-comers or music-video graduates, but a couple of guys who have shown themselves to have true horror chops.
The Grudge 3 was directed by Toby Wilkins and scripted by Brad Keene, who held those posts respectively on Splinter and From Within, two of the smarter and more satisfying independent fright films to emerge in the last year. Yet even their best efforts are defeated by the necessity of adhering to a formula that has now become familiar well past the point of banality. No matter what the context,...

You know, rarely do I get excited about sequels. I loved the Ju-on movies, but for whatever reason, even with creator Takashi Shimizu at the helm of the American remakes, they still felt kind of stale. With the upcoming release of Ghost House Pictures' The Grudge 3 from Sony, some interesting surprises have been popping up. The latest one? Gone is the PG-13 rating, and in its place the MPAA has granted this third U.S. entry an R rating, the first in the franchise's history.
The rating was earned "for violence, disturbing images, and some language"; and I can't say I'm surprised given that Splinter director Toby Wilkins is at the helm. This dude can do horror, and he's not shy about the onscreen action getting messy. Strap in, folks; we may finally be getting us a ghost story with some much needed bite!

It's true. The MPAA rating is in on Ghost House Pictures' The Grudge 3 . The threequel is the first American Grudge film to get an R rating. Why? "For violence, disturbing images and some language." The previous two theatrical entries, directed by Takashi Shimizu, were PG-13. In this third entry - starring Shawnee Smith, Matthew Knight, Beau Mirchoff and Johanna E. Braddy - a young Japanese woman holds a secret to ending the curse of the Grudge. She travels to a haunted Chicago apartment building where she encounters a family battling to survive the ghosts. Together they confront the ghost of Kayako to save their souls from their impending tragic fate. Toby Wilkins ( Splinter ) directs from a script by Brad Keene ( The Gravedancers ). Skinwalkers
In case you're wondering what skinwalkers are, be advised that it's apparently merely a fancy Navajo term for that old horror movie standby, werewolves.
This latest cinematic incarnation of these nasty creatures revolves around two warring clans, one violent and one peaceful, whose fate rests in the hands of an asthmatic preteen boy. Opened Friday in limited release without press screenings, Skinwalkers is a thoroughly undistinguished addition to a genre that probably reached its peak a quarter-century ago with An American Werewolf in London.
Sadly, this effort, featuring creature effects by no less than multiple Oscar winner Stan Winston, is a low-budget piece of schlock that doesn't even manage to impress on a technical level. Lon Chaney Jr. transformed into a werewolf more convincingly.
The plot centers on sickly, small-town boy Timothy (Matthew Knight), who is approaching his 13th birthday. The event is a watershed, as it apparently marks the point that will enable him to control the fate of his family, who unbeknownst to him and his widowed mother (Rhona Mitra) are werewolves.
They're good werewolves, though, in that each night they're careful to have themselves tied up so that they cannot do any violent mischief. Less altruistic is another group of skinwalkers, led by model-handsome Varek (Jason Behr) and model-pretty Sonja (Natassia Malthe), who are trying to kill the boy so he won't interfere with their nocturnal fun.
Because most of the encounters between the two tribes occur during the day, what results are not epic battles between savage creatures but rather a series of simple gunfights, with Timothy's pistol-packing grandmother (Barbara Gordon) proving a particularly mean shot. Eventually, another of the boy's relatives, Uncle Jonas (Elias Koteas, a Canadian actor probably wishing that Atom Egoyan made more movies), reveals that the feud between the two bands of werewolves is as much familial as it is philosophical.
Utterly lacking in thrills of any kind, the PG-13 film even lacks the gore quotient necessary to satisfy demanding horror buffs. Choppily edited, poorly acted and displaying strictly B-movie production values, it will quickly assume its undistinguished place amidst the thousands of similar genre efforts crowding video store shelves.
