“Best Guess” features appearances from Naomi McPherson, Cara Delevingne, Towa Bird, and E.R. Fightmaster. But most of the people featured in the visual were fans Dacus found online.

Sony is ramping up its award campaign plans for filmmaker Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night Live movie, a dramatic recreation of the 90 minutes leading up to the iconic NBC show’s first episode in the mid-1970s.

The studio announced late Thursday that it will release Saturday Night in select theaters on Sept. 27 in New York, Los Angeles and Toronto, followed by another expansion on Oct. 4. It will then open nationwide on Oct. 22 as originally planned.

The move gives Sony and the filmmakers a chance to use word of mouth to build anticipation for the movie, which was one of the most buzzed-about titles at the Telluride Film Festival, which is considered ground zero for assessing the awards landscape.

It’s stuff of legend how showrunner Lorne Michael and an insanely talented troupe of young comedians and writers changed television — and culture — forever. Reitman directed from a script he co-wrote with Gil Kenan.

Saturday Night Live, or SNL, is probably one of the most iconic comedy shows of all time. The live sketch comedy variety show – try saying that five times fast – has been running since 1975 and is showing no signs of slowing down, so a feature film on it was an inevitability rather than a possibility.

In 2023, we learned that Jason Reitman was going to be directing a film based on SNL and writing it with Ghostbusters co-writer Gil Kenan. In March this year, we learned that Jk Simmons would appear in the film, but Sony Pictures has now updated the film’s name and given it a release date in the US.

Sony Pictures announced Tuesday that Saturday Night is set to hit theaters Oct. 11, which marks the 49th anniversary of the NBC sketch series’ premiere that aired on that same night in 1975. Previously using the working title of SNL 1975, the film is getting a prime awards season release.

Although taking on a song like “My Heart Will Go On” is a pretty daunting feat, the members of Muna certainly didn’t try to replicate Dion, instead turning the sweeping, melodramatic ballad into a slightly twangy indie-pop number. Rather than scrambling for those high notes, vocalist Katie Gavin brings things down an octave, letting bandmates Josette Maskin and Naomi McPherson fill out the sound with some gorgeous harmonies.

Complete with just the right amount of reverb, some nice piano arrangements, and a very sick slide-guitar solo near the song’s end, Muna turned “My Heart Will Go On” into something entirely their own. Watch their performance in the triple j studios below.
