Film history is built on cult classics as much as is it on blockbusters. These are movies that, while they didn't necessarily make a huge impact upon their initial release, gained appreciation in later years and left fans wondering why we didn't see more of what was originally presented. Somehow, a "Power Rangers" film falls into that category. 

Directed by Dean Israelite, 2017's "Power Rangers" reinvented the story about a group of teenagers with attitude being recruited by the ancient warrior Zordon (Bryan Cranston) to fight bad guys in color-coded super suits. By jazzing up the origins of Jason (Dacre Montgomery), Billy (Rj Cyler), and the rest of the team, Israelite and his collaborators created a fun film that should have paved the way for sequels. Back in 2017, Lionsgate released a Power Rangers movie that was part The Breakfast Club coming-of-age story and a bit of the children's superhero series that most of us grew up with. The end result received mixed reviews from critics, and it generated a so-so box office. This ended plans to launch a series of multiple sequels, but since its release, the film has generated a bit of a cult following, and now that can continue with the movie finding a new streaming home.

Films that are freshly added to the platform tend to perform well, and it's hopeful that the same will happen to Power Rangers. Power Rangers fans have a lot to look forward to, given the amount of franchise content hitting several platforms next month. One such piece of content is the highly underrated 2017 Saban's Power Rangers Lionsgate movie, which hits Peacock on December 6.

Power Rangers fans are disappointed with the latest update from the upcoming live-action show. Netflix has reportedly abandoned the project and Hasbro is looking for a new partner to take on the project. The series was in development for more than two years under Supernatural story editor Jenny Klein and The End Of The F***ing World co-creator Jonathan Entwistle.

However, fans have suggested another solution for the Hasbro property to emerge stronger than ever. Before Hasbro took over, Saban developed a film version of the 1993 show, Power Rangers, in 2017. The film was a commercial failure, but fans have grown to like it and want Hasbro to pursue a sequel.

Succession actor is a one of many discordant parts in this coming-of-age saga about pigeons, which are the best thing about the movie

The coming-of-age drama Little Wing opens with two facts, both quoted from the 2006 New Yorker article of the same name by Susan Orlean. The first: “Americans move, on average, every five years; pigeons almost never move.” The second: that racing pigeons “have a fixed, profound and nearly incontrovertible sense of home”.

The title card successfully imparts a few facts about the film, which premieres this week on the streaming service Paramount+. One, that Little Wing, directed by Dean Israelite from a screenplay by John Gatins, will awkwardly interweave human concerns with the very different realities of pigeons, who are indeed fascinating and the best thing about this movie. And that the film will attempt to vest such comparisons with certain deep insights about our sense of belonging and home.

Exclusive: Kevin Hart’s Hartbeat and The Hideaway Entertainment will partner to produce Can You Hear Me?, a new thriller scripted by Taylor Anthony Hopkins (The Last Reverie) and Luke Kelly-Clyne. From absurd dashcam footage to amusing cat videos, it’s pretty safe to assume that the vast majority of real-world recordings are completely banal in nature – so why is it that Found Footage movies are almost exclusively associated with the horror genre? If you really think about it, we should have seen major Found Footage entries in pretty much every single genre by now, and yet filmmakers still insist on trying to make the next Blair Witch Project year after year.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a sucker for Pov horror flicks, but I also enjoy a nice little palate cleanser every now and then. That’s why I appreciate rare exceptions like Dean Israelite’s Project Almanac, a sci-fi Found Footage romp that takes advantage of subjective filmmaking in an admirable attempt at updating age-old time travel tropes for a new generation.

Leading the charge will be Liz Williamson (formerly of Wpa), who is supported by Gerard George (formerly of Screen Talent Agency) and Mike Diaz. New signings at Citizen Skull that come with the expansion include Emmy winning cinematographer Petr Cikhart (The Amazing Race) and production designer Flora Ortega (God’s Country).

"Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" first hit the airwaves in 1993, and even though that original iteration of Rangers didn't last all that long, the series has remained remarkably enduring. 30 years later, the series has aired nearly 1,000 episodes through its various iterations, has inspired hundreds of issues of comics books, millions in toy sales, and is truly a globally recognized brand with huge staying power. Still, the franchise has never managed to fully crack the code in making the jump to movies.

Two films, the "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" movie in 1995 and "Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie," did fine enough by '90s "kids movies based on a show" standards, which were ultimately more about selling toys and copies of the films on VHS.

Brian Cox is following up Succession, easily one of the best shows on television, by playing a pigeon racer in Paramount+’s Little Wing. The coming-of-age film will also star Yellowstone‘s Kelly Reilly.

Brooklynn Prince (Cocaine Bear) is set to play a teen who becomes interested in pigeon racing, and Che Tafari (Me Time) stars as her friend.

Filming’s expected to get underway in Portland this month. Oscar and DGA Awards nominee John Gatins (Flight) wrote the screenplay based on Susan Orlean’s New Yorker article. Three-time DGA Awards nominee Dean Israelite is on board to direct.

Israelite, Brian Cox, Karen Rosenfelt, Donald De Line, Susan Orlean, Don Dunn, and Liz Brandenburg are executive producing. Gatins and Naomi Despres will serve as producers.

Deadline broke the news Wednesday, revealing that Bling Empire would not return for a fourth season.

Additionally, the New York-set spinoff has been canceled after a single season.

Stars included Christine Chiu, Kane Lim, Kelly Mi Li, Kevin Kreider, Gabriel Chu, Anna Shay, Cherie Chan, Jessey Lee, Kim Lee, Andrew Gray, Jamie Xie, and Guy Tang for the original series.

The spinoff Bling Empire: New York starred Dorothy Wang, who was in season two of the original show, as well as Tina Leung, Deborah Hung, and Stephen Hung.

No reason has been given for the cancellations, and there's no telling whether Netflix will revisit the franchise down the line.

2022, we aren't quite done with you yet. Award season has officially rolled into town, meaning it's time to reflect on the highest highs of last year as the industry awards (or snubs) some of the most beloved titles across film and TV. The latest awards lineup comes courtesy of the Directors Guild of America, which today announced the nominees across seven television categories.

Last year, the DGA television awards were largely dominated by "Succession" — as was every other TV-based awards show. But in its absence, both new and old titles have stepped up to vie for the spotlight. For drama series, the nominations went to Jason Bateman ("Ozark"), Vince Gilligan, ("Better Call Saul"), Sam Levinson, ("Euphoria"), Aoife McArdle ("Severance"), and Ben Stiller ("Severance").

At last year’s DGA television awards, “Succession” dominated the drama series category with all five of the nominees. This year, with that HBO series on hiatus, the nominees went to Jason Bateman (“Ozark”), Vince Gilligan (“Better Call Saul”), Sam Levinson (“Euphoria”), and Aoiff McArdle and Ben Stiller for two separate episodes of “Severance.”

In the comedy series category, Tim Burton scored his first ever career DGA nomination, for “Wednesday.” Burton was joined by Bill Hader (“Barry”), Amy Sherman-Palladino (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Christopher Storer (“The Bear”), and Mike White (“The White Lotus”).

The 73rd annual Directors Guild of America Awards kicked off on Saturday evening. The awards honored the best directing in film and television of the past year.

This year, nominees Lee Isaac Chung for “Minari,” Emerald Fennell for “Promising Young Woman,” David Fincher for “Mank,” Aaron Sorkin for “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” and Chloé Zhao for “Nomadland” vied for the top directorial prize for film, with Zhao winning.

The Directors Guild of America (DGA) announced the television nominations for the 2020 DGA Awards on Monday, honoring “Ted Lasso,” “WandaVision,” and “The Queen’s Gambit” as examples of some of the finest directorial work that the medium has to offer.

Both Comedy and Drama categories saw complete turnover in nominees from 2019, with none of the series honored last year airing episodes during the window of eligibility in 2020. Therefore the celebration is guaranteed to get an injection of fresh blood, a welcome development with any awards body.

Curiously, the wide open field allowed for some surprising series to garner their first ever DGA nominations, including AMC’s “Better Call Saul” and Disney+’s “The Mandalorian.”

Since its inception in 1979, Nickelodeon has been forward thinking with its programming. Yet it took over 41 years for the network to go after the final frontier, a live action space travel show for kids. To make an ambitious show like that happen, they needed the right co-pilot, landing the director of Apollo 13, Ron Howard.

Howard serves as executive producer for The Astronauts, a new live-action kids series coming to Nickelodeon on Nov. 13. It’s the first kids series to come from Howard and Brian Grazer’s production company, Imagine Entertainment, which launched a new division in 2019 called Imagine Kids+Family, headed up by Stephanie Sperber. In early meetings between the network and production company, the prospect of doing a space show for kids was exciting to both parties.

The last time the Power Rangers graced the big screen, the end result was a dark and gritty reboot that arrived at least half a decade too late. As one of the most nostalgia-triggering and cheesy TV shows in history, playing things with a completely straight face was definitely the wrong creative choice, and only Elizabeth Banks’ scenery-chewing Rita Repulsa seemed to know what kind of movie she was in.

There were initially plans to make at least four sequels, but Power Rangers didn’t even get one after being the subject of middling reviews and lukewarm box office business, with the $105 million blockbuster topping out at just over $140 million globally. It did manage to turn a profit based on the all-important merchandise sales, but after Hasbro purchased the entire brand, another reinvention was quickly thrown into development.

A new report claims that the planned Power Rangers movie reboot will take place within the continuity of the TV show franchise. The new characters being introduced will belong to the canon spread out over 28 years, and it's possible for past rangers to appear in this new iteration. More big changes have also been revealed.

Since their debut in the early 1990s, the Power Rangers have had a vast assortment of series, spin-offs and toy lines, with the martial arts fighting superheroes continuing to be popular even today. Their last big screen adventure back in 2017 was met with mixed reviews and a lackluster box office, leaving fans wondering when Hasbro and Paramount Pictures will next attempt to bring the multi-colored warriors to theaters. Exclusive: Manhunt co-creator Andrew Sodroski has been hired to adapt the screenplay for action-thriller Rogue from STXfilms, Tencent and producer David Goyer.

As we revealed earlier this year, Dean Israelite (Power Rangers) is directing. Dark Knight scribe Goyer and Keith Levine are producing for Phantom Four, which has a first look deal with Tencent. The film, which revolves around a CIA agent, is originally based on a pitch from writer Tj Fixman. Drew Simon is overseeing the project at Stx along with Sam Brown.

The feature marks Sodroski’s return to features after writing and exec producing two seasons of true crime series Manhunt. He most recently wrote and executive-produced Manhunt: Deadly Games, the 10-hour limited series for Charter Spectrum and Lionsgate. A recently released piece of concept art shows what the Green Ranger would have looked like had the sequel to 2017's Power Rangers ever come to fruition. With the first movie teasing the Green Ranger's arrival, fans were excited to see what the fan-favorite ninja warrior would like in Power Rangers 2, but alas, due to the first movie's poor critical and commercial response, they were left wanting.

The artwork comes from digital artist AwedopeArts, who also stated that they, like others, were desperate to see a sequel to Power Rangers take shape and bring the Green Ranger to the big screen.

The last attempt at rebooting the Power Rangers for modern audiences didn’t go so well, with the 2019 update failing to juggle the tonal shifts required to balance a serious superhero origin story alongside the nostalgia aspect of a show that had peaked culturally over 25 years previously. That being said, Dean Israelite’s failed franchise-starter did much bigger numbers in toy sales than it did at the box office, and turning a profit made it virtually inevitable that the brand would be relaunched yet again.

Following the recent announcement of the latest 90s-set Power Rangers reboot, a lot of news has been trickling out from the long-running franchise. Original star David Yost wants to reunite the Mighty Morphin’ cast for a reunion show, while we’ve reported on plenty of casting rumors regarding the latest big screen project as well.

Exclusive: Power Rangers filmmaker Dean Israelite has been hired to develop and direct the action thriller Rogue for STXfilms and Tencent, Deadline has learned.

The logline is being kept under wraps, but we’ve heard the project revolves around a CIA agent. The film is based on a pitch from writer T.J. The Directors Guild of America announced only a handful of nominations on the TV front on January 6, after a glitch in voting. Jill Soloway, who won in 2015 for helming “Transparent,” was left off the ballot for the series finale. So the guild is letting its members recast their votes in that category. The DGA will reveal the results of that on Friday, along with the nominees for drama series and specials. (The feature film nominations are still a go for Tuesday.)

Among Monday’s nominations, “Fosse/Verdon” led the way with three bids in the TV Movie or Limited Series race: Emmy nominees Thomas Kail and Jessica Yu are joined by Minki Spiro. Emmy champ Johan Renck (“Chernobyl”), Emmy nominee Ava DuVernay (“When They See Us”) and Vince Gilligan (“El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie”) round out the race.

The Directors Guild of America has announced nominations in several television categories, including movies and limited series, and documentary categories for the 72nd annual Directors Guild Awards, which will be handed out on Saturday, Jan. 25.

The limited series nominees include three different episodes of “Fosse/Verdon,” as well as “When They See Us,” “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie” and “Chernobyl.”

The commercial nominees include Ridley Scott for a Hennessy ad and Spike Jonze for commercials for Squarespace and Mekanism.

The new Power Rangers film will discard the 2017 movie and offer a fresh new take that involves time travel!

The Power Rangers are being rebooted once more. Completly seperate from the previous 2017 film, this new film will be made by Paramount Pictures who's tapped The End of the F---ing World creator Jonathan Entwistle to take on the beloved franchise. Entwistle is in early negotiations to direct the film which is, of course, based on the Power Rangers TV series that launched in the 90's. Source: THR
