If you find yourself laughing out loud while watching the new sports comedy Running Point, you're not alone. The Netflix hit is "a return to traditional comedy," showrunner-producer David Stassen tells Gold Derby, and it also provides viewers with that "big feel" they've been "craving."
Cocreated by Stassen, Elaine Ko, Mindy Kaling, and Ike Barinholtz, Running Point stars Kate Hudson as Isla Gordon, a former party girl who becomes the president of the Los Angeles Waves basketball team. The family-owned business includes older brother Cam (Justin Theroux), middle brother Ness (Scott MacArthur), and younger brother Sandy (Drew Tarver), plus surprise half-brother Jackie (Fabrizio Guido).
The 10-episode first season of Running Point dropped Feb. 27 on Netflix, and it was picked up for Season 2 days later. The series is eligible at the 2025 Emmys in the comedy categories.
Here is our full interview with Stassen, which includes spoilers for the full Season 1.

Netflix's Running Pointdebuted on February 27, 2025, and instantly rose to the top of the streamer's charts. The series currently claims the coveted #1 spot on Netflix's weekly Global Top 10 Shows with over 12 million views. Developed for screens by the talented Mindy Kaling, alongside Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen, and starring powerhouse Kate Hudson, Running Point was off to a flying start from the get-go.
The heartfelt and endearing narrative of the series blends professional basketball with family dynamics and unassuming humor, making Running Point the perfect binge-watch. Revolving around Kate Hudson's Isla Gordon, the only sister in the Gordon family, the series chronicles Isla's behemoth task of helming the Los Angeles Waves basketball team when the presidency is abruptly handed to her by her elder brother. In doing so, Running Point touches on poignant themes, including familial relationships, love, legacy and personal growth, taking the series much further than amounting to a mere comedy.

Spider-Noir remains in production and, if the set photos we've seen are any indication, the web-slinger's first TV series will put a unique new spin on Spider-Man.
Screen icon Nicolas Cage plays Ben Reilly, a private eye who moonlights as a superhero. We've seen him swinging into action on set, suggesting the series will be very much in line with the comics, even though those featured Peter Parker under the mask. Why Spider-Noir is named after his clone hasn't been made clear.
Lukas Haas has landed a mystery role in the show and, during a recent interview with Coming Soon, suggested the series could be released in black and white as well as colour.
"It was just an incredible project," he told the site. "Everybody involved was amazing. Brendan Gleason, he plays my boss. Just getting to, to do that noir thing. It was very genuine film noir, the way they filmed it,...

Note: This story contains spoilers from “Running Point” Season 1, Episode 10.
“Running Point” wraps up its first season by pushing forward the love triangle that has been running through the mind of Kate Hudson’s Isla Gordon all season.
After a season full of tension building between Isla and Waves coach Jay Brown (Jay Ellis), distance grows between Isla and her fiancé, Lev (Max Greenfield), who calls off their engagement in the penultimate episode. By the finale, Jay kisses Isla after the big game, despite preparing to leave the Waves to be closer to his kids in Boston.
“She loves Lev and she has been in it for a long time, and maybe there is a bit of a reason why they have waited so long to pull the trigger and get married, but she really loves him, and he’s very stable,” Ike Barinholtz, who created the show alongside Mindy Kaling and David Stassen,...

With only three seasons, many are still pining for more episodes of the cult celebrity satire “The Other Two,” but at least one person thinks the show ended where it was supposed to. Speaking in a recent interview on Variety’s “Just for Variety” podcast with Marc Malkin, former star of the series Drew Tarver shared that despite the desire for more of him, he has no need to revisit Cary Dubek.
“It felt like a good conclusion to those characters. I love that show,” Tarver said. “I love Cary Dubek, but once he had that really dark third season, it did feel like maybe this has come to a natural end. He’s kind of in a good place. Is he going to start bopping around and doing these storylines, trying to be an actor again? So, I was really happy with how it ended and his journey. But it was a really,...

In one of Netflix’s quickest renewals for a first-year series, the streamer has picked up basketball comedy Running Point for a second season.
The news comes just a week after the show, starring Kate Hudson, was released Feb. 27 and hours after Netflix canceled drama The Recruit after two seasons. Meanwhile, fellow Netflix freshman comedy series No Good Deed is still awaiting word on its fate almost three months after its premiere.
In its debut weekend, Running Point scored 9.3 million views and ranked in the Top 10 across 83 countries.

Running Point, the latest comedy show from Netflix, just scored a massive Season 2 update shortly after premiering on the platform late last month. The series, clearly inspired by Jeanie Buss and her tenure as the owner and president of the Los Angeles Lakers, a real-life NBA team, features Kate Hudson as Isla Gordon, the new president of the Los Angeles Waves. The comedy has been a hit for the streamer, and it seems the company is moving quickly on another batch of episodes.

With his latest role, Chet Hanks got to explore some art imitating life.
The Running Point actor, who is the son of Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, recently revealed he was prepared to “quit acting” if he didn’t get the role of basketball bad boy Travis Bugg on the Netflix sports comedy series from Mindy Kaling.
“It was just uncanny—it’s almost like it was written for me, but it wasn’t,” Hanks told Esquire. “So I basically get to be a slightly exaggerated version of myself.”
Three years sober, he also related to Travis’ addiction struggle in the series, which was co-created by Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, David Stassen and Elaine Ko.
“That’s just great writing, and I’m glad that they allowed the opportunity to give their character more depth,” added Hanks. “But it’s exciting. I’ve always noticed art imitating life in a lot...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Running Point Season 1.] Running Point may have been marketed as an underdog tale about Isla Gordon (Kate Hudson), a woman who finds herself in charge of a basketball dynasty after her eldest brother lands himself in legal hot water, but at its core, the comedy is about the forming of a new family. Introduced as a hawker working in the Gordon family’s basketball arena, Jackie (Fabrizio Guido) quickly discovers that he’s part of the sports dynasty himself. The will of Jackie’s late mother reveals he’s the illegitimate son of the deceased Gordon family patriarch. After learning that they have a brother they never knew about, Isla, Sandy (Drew Tarver), and Ness (Scott MacArthur) welcome Jackie with open arms, but eldest sibling Cam (Justin Theroux) is rather resistant to the new addition. Initially, the Gordon family’s lawyer who represents their Los Angeles-based basketball team known as the Waves,...

It looks like Netflix's latest sports show is dunking on the competition. Running Point, the latest series from The Sex Lives of College Girls creator and star of The Office Mindy Kaling, only just debuted on February 27, 2025, but it's already become a huge hit with fans. The Kate Hudson-starrer has shot to the top of the U.S. streaming charts in only five days. So far up, in fact, we're going to need a few more good basketball puns to prove it to you.
As it currently stands, Running Point is the number one show currently streaming in the U.S. on Netflix. Who says love and basketball don't mix? The workplace rom-comedy wrapped in a sports jersey has tickled fans' fancy and proven that people want to watch attractive people be funny, partake in physical activity, and maybe fall in love with one another. At least from time to time.

Actress Brenda Song is currently starring in Netflix’sRunning Point with Kate Hudson, but many likely remember her as London Tipton in The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, which ran on the Disney Channel from 2005 to 2008, and starred Cole Dylan Sprouse. Song, who has also appeared in films like The Last Showgirl and The Social Network, is just one of several former Disney stars that have gone on to bigger things as they’ve grown up.
Speaking with People, Song talked about how she’s reacted to the success of her former Disney Channel alums. “It’s so incredible. Seeing my contemporaries growing up, it’s like the most beautiful thing,” Song told the outlet. “I’ve been fortunate to run into Selena (Gomez) (amid) all this craziness, and I’m just incredibly proud.
“They’re finally getting the flowers that they deserve,” Song continued about stars like Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez.

Running Point, Netflix's latest addition to its long list of sports-centered works, debuted on February 27, 2025. Comprising 10 episodes, with each episode averaging at just thirty minutes, the heartfelt comedy is the perfect binge-watch. The series follows its protagonist, Isla Gordon, as she struggles to carry on her family's legacy in basketball. Isla takes on the presidency of the Los Angeles Waves basketball team following a scandal that forces her elder brother, Cam, to resign from his position. However, it isn't a smooth sail for Isla, who has to prove herself both to her family and the industry.
Created by the talented Mindy Kaling, together with Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen, Running Point has a host of talented names, featuring a diverse cast from different backgrounds. The combination of the cast creates an eccentric dynamic, leading to compelling characters. While some names are well-known in the industry, Running Point also brings...

What do you get when you combine the compelling family drama of Succession with the underdog sports story ofTed Lasso? Well, it might just be Running Point, a show loosely based on the story of Los Angeles Lakers president Jeanie Buss (who also serves as an executive producer of the show). Though embellished for dramatic and comedic effect, rom-com queen Kate Hudson serves as a fictional version of Jeanie, taking on the role of the smart and passionate Isla Gordon, who has been passed over for a key role in the family business in favor of her brothers: the charismatic addict Cam (Justin Theroux), the organized but awkward Sandy (Drew Tarver), and the unpolished, likable Ness (Scott MacArthur). When tragedy strikes, however, Isla gets the opportunity to step in and attempt to prove herself against all odds.

Rom-com queen and Oscar nominee Kate Hudson leads Running Point, a new workplace comedy from executive producers Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen about the owners of the Los Angeles Waves, a fictional basketball team modeled after the legendary Lakers (Jeanie Buss and Linda Rambis are also EPs). When the team's disgraced president (Emmy winner Justin Theroux) resigns to enter rehab, he names his younger sister, former wild child Isla Gordon (Hudson), as his replacement. Underestimated and overlooked her entire life, Isla sets out to prove to everyone, including brothers Ness (Scott MacArthur) and Sandy (Drew Tarver), the team's general manager and chief financial officer, respectively, that she's the right person for the job. Much like Kaling's other comedies, the 10-episode series (now streaming on Netflix) is an easy, entertaining watch with an excellent ensemble (Brenda Song is a standout as the Waves' chief of...

In Netflix’s “Running Point,” Kate Hudson’s Isla Gordon finds her biggest critics in her two brothers — played by Drew Tarver and Scott MacArthur — in a dynamic Tarver said the on-screen siblings found with ease.
“We immediately found a rapport as siblings,” Tarver told TheWrap, pointing to the first time he, Hudson and MacArthur hung out after work and grabbed drinks, He said that outing led into the sibling dynamic on the show as Tarver began “playing mediator pretty quickly.”
“Scotty was telling a story, and Kate was like, ‘Scotty, this story is too long’ — she was just immediately older-sistering him,” Tarver recalled. “I was in between the two of them, [saying] ‘yeah, it was a slightly long story … but Kate, let him get this out.'”

Kate Hudson helms Running Point, the latest show from Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen as Isla Gordon, an underdog of sorts. She’s the only daughter of Jack Gordon, who had several other sons including Cam (Justin Theroux), Ness (Scott MacArthur) and their half brother Sandy (Drew Tarver).
Isla and her best friend Ali Lee (Brenda Song) are set to make waves (no pun intended) within the professional basketball franchise the Los Angeles Waves, when Isla gets promoted to president of the team. She has all sorts of upstream swimming to do in the role as her brothers doubt her capabilities and the players don’t exactly take her seriously, but she has many tricks up her sleeve, and she has been paying attention to the game since she was a little girl.

Kate Hudson has had a robust career, but “Running Point” marks a first for the actress. Believe it or not, this is her first leading TV role.
Now streaming on Netflix, the series focuses on Isla Gordon (Hudson), as she’s unexpectedly given control of her family’s basketball team, the Waves. Though a fictional team and story, “Running Point” is loosely based on Lakers president Jeanie Buss.
Here are all the major players you’ll need to know in the series.

Isla Gordon is the sole daughter of the Gordon family, and is taken fully by surprise when her oldest brother hands her the reins to the team. She’s played by Kate Hudson, known for films like “Almost Famous,” “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” and many, many more.

Indecision. While deleterious when recurring over the course of a lifetime, dilly-dallying can kill even quicker on a basketball court. A belated pass leads to a turnover, the slightest hitch spoils a fast break, and a mistimed offense can never score enough to win. Indecision in comedy is equally unforgiving. Typically, it pops up when someone misses a punchline or rushes their set-up, but in the case of Netflix’s “Running Point,” the problem is foundational. With so many broadly defined characters pivoting to do whatever the story requires, and so little investment in any one facet of the 10-episode first season, Mindy Kaling’s latest sitcom struggles to connect — sincerely or comedically. It tries to do too much and rather than sticking by the choices it makes, “Running Point” is simply overrun.
Kate Hudson stars as Isla Gordon, the black sheep of a basketball family simply because she’s the only woman involved.

Netflix‘s new series Running Point has arrived, and with it, the introduction of the Gordon family, who oversees the fictional LA-based basketball team the Waves. In the series, we’re introduced to Cam (Justin Theroux), the eldest of the Gordon siblings and acting CEO of the basketball team. When he finds himself in a legal pickle, he appoints baby sister Isla (Kate Hudson) to take the reins in his stead. This raises some eyebrows, particularly from her brothers Sandy (Drew Tarver) and Ness (Scott MacArthur), since they believed they’d be next in line for the coveted seat. This forces Isla to work twice as hard to prove herself, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some roadblocks bound to get in the way. As viewers will see in the opening of the series, a major revelation forces the family to reckon with their late father’s past...

Running Point made its debut on Netflix on Feb. 27, and the series starring Kate Hudson was an immediate slam dunk. Kate Hudson stole the show in 2022’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story,” her last major comedic role. Hudson played a scandal-ridden fashion designer, skewering the shallow costumes a certain kind of rich social justice influencer wears with giddy, screwball aplomb. The role, functioning as a kind of comeback for Hudson, makes one excited for her next comedic leading role in Netflix’s TV series “Running Point,” especially knowing it comes from comedy vets Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen (who all collaborated on “The Mindy Project”).
But in practice, “Running Point” does not let Hudson discover the specificities and eccentricities so joyfully gleaned in her previous work. The 10-episode first season is a flattening, often maddening watch, only occasionally rising above generic familiarities to deliver something trenchant or specific about its otherwise generically dysfunctional family.

The new sitcom Running Point, which premieres on Netflix today, has several creators. Elaine Ko spent years writing Modern Family. Ike Barinholtz is a prolific character actor on everything from Blockers to The White House Plumbers, not to mention a Celebrity Jeopardy! champion. David Stassen is a writer and director whose credits include History of the World: Part II. But the fourth creator — Mindy Kaling — is the only one who’s parlayed her work writing on and co-starring in The Office into becoming a brand. Now, she’s the mogul behind Never Have I Ever, The Sex Lives of College Girls and The Mindy Project. She’s the social media maven with a signature swimsuit line; and if she hasn’t quite reached mononym status yet, the brand-new star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame gets her just a little closer.

Ready for some slam-dunk laughs? Netflix's new original comedy series Running Point, from none other than Mindy Kaling, finally made its premiere on Feb. 27, and it's going to be tough to beat as the funniest comedy series of 2025. Kate Hudson makes an easy lay-up in her first foray into comedy television, finding a comfortable home in Kaling's witty writing.
Running Point takes a play from the real-life experience of Los Angeles Lakers president Jeanie Buss, but Kaling and her co-showrunners Ike Barinholtz and Dave Stassen turn the realistic setup up a notch into a larger-than-life comedy world. Isla Gordon (Hudson) unexpectedly takes over as president of her family's business, the successful Los Angeles Waves basketball team.
Isla hikes an uphill battle (in heels!) to be taken seriously amid doubts from her brothers, the board, the team, and the unrelenting public.

Mindy Kaling is back with Running Point. She has been a singular comic voice on television for the past fifteen years. Her Fox and Hulu series The Mindy Project, which you can also find streaming on Netflix, was one of the funniest sitcoms of the decade. Then came the semi-autobiographical Never Have I Ever, a hilarious coming-of-age story unlike anything else on television, whether streaming or network.
However, Running Point is nothing like those shows because it’s just another run-of-the-mill comedy. The series is not particularly funny, relying too heavily on excessive exposition and basketball lingo that isn’t executed well. It’s pleasant enough but ultimately a gigantic letdown, given the cast and the talent involved, particularly behind the camera.

Peak TV may technically be in the past, but its specter still lingers. How else do you get two flashy, star-studded TV shows about the Los Angeles Lakers in the span of three years? The first, HBO’s “Winning Time,” dramatized the basketball team’s years of triumph in the 1980s; the latest, Netflix’s “Running Point,” is both more contemporary and more fictional, though it has closer ties to the actual Lakers organization through owner Jeanie Buss and front office fixture Linda Rambis, both executive producers.
“Running Point” can and does stand on its own, but it’s useful to drill down on the comparison to “Winning Time” to establish why the newer show may stand a stronger chance at long-term success. Some of that potential comes down to shared strengths: like “Winning Time,” “Running Point” is as packed with famous faces, as any tribute to Hollywood’s home team ought to be.

Updated with Pepperdine’s response: With hours until game day, Netflix has the all-clear to proceed with its new comedy Running Point after Pepperdine University sued the streamer for trademark infringement.
After Netflix filed an opposition on Tuesday in Central California’s U.S. District Court, claiming that “Running Point has nothing to do with universities or college sports,” a judge has denied Pepperdine University’s motion for a temporary restraining order on Wednesday. The show debuts February 27.
Sean Burnett, Pepperdine’s senior vice president and chief marketing officer, has since announced they plan to continue with the lawsuit, despite the judge tossing the restraining order.
“Our trademark is more than just a symbol—it represents the legacy, values, and excellence that Pepperdine has upheld for decades,” said Burnett. “We do not believe Netflix and Warner Bros. can be permitted to take the Waves trademarks and colors we have used...

Make some way for Netflix! The streaming service is dribbling down the court and shooting nothing but straight buckets with its latest original comedy series. Kate Hudson might be best known for her romantic comedies on the big screen, but the Oscar-nominated movie star is tackling her first leading role in a comedy series with Netflix's new sitcom Running Point.
She's not the only big name attached to the series. There are plenty more familiar faces in the main and supporting cast, but behind the scene, there's an even bigger name. None other than The Office and The Mindy Project (not to mention Never Have I Ever and The Sex Lives of College Girls) mastermind Mindy Kaling co-created the series, which she also writes and executive produces.

If you're a fan of Mindy Kaling and are a Netflix subscriber, there's a bit of good and bad news for you going into the end of February 2025. No, her modern classic teen comedy Never Have I Ever isn't going anywhere (thankfully), but the star's eponymous sitcom The Mindy Project will be departing Netflix by the end of the month. Grab a bear claw and lie on the floor in distress!
As a comedy series that originally aired on Fox, then moved to Hulu as an original when the streamer saved it from cancellation, and was produced by NBCUniversal, it was surprising when the underrated workplace rom-com landed on Netflix back in January 2023. It was a pleasant surprise nonetheless as lots of new viewers had the chance to discover the series.
