Just over a decade ago, director Renny Harlin introduced audiences to The Legend of Hercules and probably quickly wished he hadn’t. The film arrived in January 2014 with a substantial $70 million budget and an action-focused cast led by Kellan Lutz, Scott Adkins, Gaia Weiss, and Liam McIntyre. Although the line-up seemed to scream big action, the critics came in like an almighty Cyclops and crushed the film to dust. But, 10 years is a long time, and now a whole new audience is discovering The Legend of Hercules on Freevee.
The film’s story centers on Hercules (Lutz), born from a tryst between the mortal Queen Alcmene and the god Zeus. The boy becomes a man, a formidable warrior, and one burdened by a prophecy that threatens to unravel the power held by King Amphitryon (Adkins). When Hercules falls in love with Princess Hebe (Weiss), things get a little complex and...

“Spartacus” is back — just without a Spartacus.
On Wednesday, January 15, Starz released the first-look teaser trailer for “Spartacus: House of Ashur,” a sequel to its original three-season “Spartacus” series, which started in 2010 with “Spartacus: Blood and Sand,” continued with “Spartacus: Vengeance,” and concluded in 2013 with “Spartacus: War of the Damned.” Between “Blood and Sand” and “Vengeance,” Starz made a six-episode miniseries “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena.”
(Spartacus, by the way, is a real historical figure. He was a Thracian gladiator and one of the escaped slaves who led an uprising against the Roman Republic in the early first century BC. Andy Whitfield played Spartacus for the first season and provided a brief voiceover for its prequel. At the time, he was battling stage IV non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Whitfield died in 2011; Liam McIntyre took over the role in Seasons 2 and 3. Kirk Douglas famously played Spartacus in Stanley Kubrick’s 1960 film.)

Can you believe it’s been over a decade since Spartacus first brought its blood-soaked, action-packed drama to our screens? Back in 2010, this hit show redefined the historical epics with its unapologetic intense storytelling and raw actions. Though Gladiator and Rome did lay the groundwork for sword-and-sandal greatness, Spartacus intensified the level, delivering four seasons of unforgettable action.
Of course, it wasn’t just the on-screen drama that had us hooked to our screens, behind the scenes, the heartbreaking loss of Andy Whitfield after Season 1 broke our hearts. But the series persevered, with Liam McIntyre stepping in to finish this epic saga of the Thracian rebel leader.

And the legacy of the legendary storyline has now returned once again with the upcoming spinoff, Spartacus: House of Ashur. Reportedly, Starz is revisiting the story but with an added twist, what if Ashur, the scheming underdog...

This post contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks."
"Star Trek: Lower Decks" season 5, episode 5, "Starbase 80?!," follows the U.S.S. Cerritos as it becomes stranded in space due to a mysterious navigational malfunction. With only impulse engines operational, the ship has no choice but to visit Starbase 80 for help. Starbase 80 had previously only been mentioned in hushed tones among the Cerritos' crew, as it is said to be cursed. At the very least, it's the worst place to work in all of Starfleet, even worse than the Cerritos.
When the crew arrives, they find the "Star Trek" equivalent of a long-ignored truck stop. Starbase 80's crew members wear uniforms that are two centuries out of date, while the station's diplomatic liaison, Cassia Knox (Nicole Byer), reveals that its technology hasn't been updated since the 2260s. That, Trekkies might instantly recognize, was the decade the original "Star Trek" series took place.

Sadly, Lawless’ return won’t be as a series regular, but as a guest-starring role in the premiere. The report states that her appearance “will be instrumental in setting up the ‘what if’ alternate timeline.” In a statement on X, creator Steven DeKnight said, “The gods bless the House of Ashur! Thrilled to have the amazing [Lucy Lawless] dropping in to grace us with her awesome presence!“
House of Ashur is described as a “history-bending, erotic, thrilling, roller-coaster experience that builds on everything that made the original series a colossal hit. The series poses the question: what if Ashur, played by fan favorite Nick Tarabay, hadn’t died on Mount Vesuvius at the end of Spartacus: Vengeance? And what if he had been gifted...

A Gears of War 6 reveal is potentially happening in June, as hinted by a voice actor. There's no date yet for the showcase, but early June is likely. The fate of Gears of War character Jd Fenix could also be revealed at this point.
It's been a while since a new entry in the Gears of War series, but there's good reason to believe that a reveal of the next game could be happening in the near future. Since classic Hollywood productions like The Longest Day, the Second World War has served as an inspiration for some of cinema's greatest stories. The 2010s and up house some brilliant films set during the war, everything from biopics of key figures to adventurous superhero stories. These films even represent some of the best of their decade, as well as some of the greatest examinations of war since the beginning of cinema.
World War II makes for a surprisingly versatile setting, with genres from romance and drama to horror and science fiction finding a home in the conflict. Thanks to the inclusion of some visionary directors, the last decade has raised the bar for what a good WW2 movie can be. Not every war movie needs to focus on combat, though it's great when they do, and dramatic takes on the Second World War are every bit as interesting as explorations of key battles.

Last year was a standout year for animation, and 2024 is already shaping up to be another banger. While a majority of the high-profile animation releases are due out later this summer, the first quarter of 2024 has already been promising. We at /Film are constantly singing the praises of animation as a medium, and doing our best to course-correct the ignorant idea that animation is only for children. Admittedly, this list is going to look mighty small for the time being, but it will be updated throughout the year as more films become available. As we noted last year, animation is one of the only mediums where global cinema is given an equal footing to studio-produced films in America, with the artistic visuals serving as a universal language that we can all enjoy. Meaning, this list is not limited to Hollywood animation releases ... and that's a good thing. As for now,...

The Legend of Hercules, once a box office flop, has found success on Netflix's Top 10 chart. Kellan Lutz's film struggled due to poor reviews and competition, earning just $61 million. DC Studios co-chair and co-ceo James Gunn recently confirmed that the upcoming animated adaptation of Crisis on Infinite Earths will not have anything to do with the transition of the DC Extended Universe into the DC Universe.
Responding to a fan on Threads who asked if the Crisis on Infinite Earths animated trilogy would have anything to do with the start of the Dcu, Gunn revealed that "They do not." Announced at the 2023 San Diego Comic-Con alongside an animated adaptation of Watchmen, the forthcoming animated project will be based on the 1980s 12-issue limited comic book series that dealt with the DC Multiverse being destroyed by the Anti-Monitor. After the remaining heroes and villains team up, they are able to stop the Anti-Monitor and create a single Earth.

‘Tis the season for holiday films. This year, Susie Abromeit is stepping into the spirit playing an interior designer tasked with a career-changing assignment — a Christmas charity ball — that requires working with a difficult, but handsome, stranger.
Designing Christmas With You is the latest project from Abromeit’s four-picture deal with Great American Family, which was announced in the fall of 2021. She produces and stars alongside Liam McIntyre.
The actress, who had a breakout role in Jessica Jones, has done a string of rom-coms for the network following appearances in King Richard and The Forever Purge. What’s different about a holiday film? Mostly, the snow.
“It was really well-made soap that looked like snow,” Abromeit notes. “The Christmas aspect is always dialed up. It’s all about the hot cocoa, the trees and the decorations, good feelings, the nostalgia.”
