The fierce ratings battle continues across the news networks, and CNN may have found themselves a new secret weapon when it comes to viewership, especially in the coveted adults 25-54 demographic. Anderson Cooper has long been the face of CNN, yet he’s not always the top ratings-grabber. For example, last Thursday (March 13), Anderson Cooper 360 finished third for the evening in total viewers, with 707,000. This was behind Erin Burnett OutFront, which led the night for CNN with 714,000 viewers. More surprisingly, perhaps, is the success of the still relatively new NewsNight with Abby Phillip, which finished second for the night in total viewers with 710,000 in the 10 pm Et hour. Phillip began anchoring the round table discussion show in October 2023, and the show continues to shine for CNN. On Thursday, Phillip’s show topped the key demo for CNN with 153,000, ahead of Cooper at 141,000 and The Source with Kaitlan Collins at...

Donald Trump may have spent his first days in office granting indulgences to the violent rioters who sacked the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, but God forbid he be asked to show mercy to the marginalized groups he plans to scapegoat as president.

Donald Trump took to the rally-like atmosphere of Capital One Arena to sign a series of executive orders, including one that withdraws from the Paris Climate Accords and others that freeze much of non-military federal hiring and new regulations.
Trump also signed an order rescinding 78 of Joe Biden’s executive actions, although the specific details have not yet been released.
The Paris Climate Accords were a signature achievement of Barack Obama’s presidency. Trump withdrew from the pact in 2017, leading to the resignation of Disney CEO Bob Iger and other business executives from a White House advisory committee. When he took office, Biden returned to the agreement, a global effort to address climate change.
Trump also promised to sign pardon’s for those who were prosecuted and convicted for their role in the riot on the Capitol on January 6, 2021. The president indicated that he would take action on the pardons this evening.

Elon Musk offered Donald Trump supporters what looked a lot like a Nazi salute on live TV to cheers from the Maga crowd Monday at Trump’s post-swearing-in inauguration rally in Washington, D.C..
As social media exploded with condemnation of what some were calling a “Sieg Heil,” with some others applauding the world’s richest man’s gesture, there was also some speculation that Musk’s movement was more like that of an Imperial Roman general in the Gladiator mode. In point of fact, Musk turned around and gave the salute a second time almost immediately afterwards to supporters seated behind him at DC’s Capital One Arena.

Wolf Blitzer may be getting ready to storm the morning on CNN.
The veteran anchor, who has led the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed outlet’s “The Situation Room” in early evenings since 2005, could bring the program to mid-to-late mornings, according to a person familiar with the matter, under a set of new plans around programming and talent currently being considered by CNN.
A CNN spokesperson declined to comment. The Status newsletter previously reported on Blitzer’s potential move to a different time slot.
CNN, which is grappling with significant downturns in viewership, has long been mulling a set of maneuvers that will put more of a spotlight on digital content, and staffers have grown more anxious over what those ideas will portend. Layoffs have long been expected, according to two people familiar with the situation, along with new tweaks to the schedule of the company’s flagship cable network. There...

Election Day is here, and the major news networks are prepared for a long night — and potentially a long week.
With over 50 million people early voting in the 2024 Presidential Election, Tuesday night will offer plenty of results to thumb through even if an ultimate winner isn’t called until later in the week, and most of the news networks will kick off their election night coverage at 6 p.m. Et, with CNN even starting at 12 a.m. Et while NBC News begins at 5 p.m. Et.
MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki will return to the Big Board — and will even be livestreamed on Peacock and other social platforms — while Fox News will see Bill Hemmer steering the “Bill”-board.
Most networks have scheduled eight hours of election night programming from 6 p.m. Et to 2 a.m. Et, with a result for the presidential showdown between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump not expected immediately.

CNN anchor Erin Burnett had to apologize to viewers on Tuesday night (October 22) after reading a quote live on air and forgetting to censor herself when it came to a curse word. The Ron Burgundy-style blooper happened on Tuesday’s episode of OutFront, where Burnett and her guests discussed a new article from The Atlantic‘s Jeffrey Goldberg. In the piece, Goldberg claims former president Donald Trump referred to deceased soldier Vanessa Guillén as “a f****** Mexican” after complaining about picking up her funeral costs. “According to Goldberg, Trump asked, ‘Did they bill us for the funeral? What did it cost?'” Burnett said, reading aloud the quote from the article, which also appeared on screen. “According to attendees, and to contemporaneous notes of the meeting taken by a participant, an aide answered: ‘Yes, we received a bill; the funeral cost $60,000.’ Trump became angry. ‘It doesn’t cost 60,000 bucks...

In the world of politics, where media savvy can make or break a career, it seems everyone wants to ask: Why on earth is Vice President Kamala Harris seemingly dodging the press like one avoids a telemarketer during dinner? Scott MacFarlane, the CBS News correspondent, wasn’t quite sure what was going on Saturday night. He was covering former President Donald Trump’s rally in western Pennsylvania when he heard noises that reminded him of firecrackers. They were gunshots.

“Stormy spent more than seven hours on the stand,” Burnett noted. “She was there for over two days. Obviously, it’s the first time she was face to face with Trump since 2007. I was in that room. They’re only ten or 15 feet apart for those hours and hours. How does she feel now that her testimony is behind her?”
“I mean, I don’t think she feels any differently,” Blade responded. “Maybe a little relieved to not have to be stressed about going in there. But I think she feels the same way she always has felt about it.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson criticized President Joe Biden for threatening to stop U.S. shipments of weapons to Israel if they launch a major invasion of Rafah, a southern city in Gaza, saying it was “a senior moment.”
Biden made this threat during a CNN interview with anchor Erin Burnett.
“I want to ask you about something happening as we sit here and speak, and that, of course, is Israel striking Rafah,” Burnett stated. “I know that you have paused – Mr. President – shipments of 2,000 pound U.S. bombs to Israel due to concern that they could be used in any offensive on Rafah. Have those bombs- those powerful 2,000-pound bombs – been used to kill civilians in Gaza?”
“Civilians have been killed in Gaza as a consequence of those bombs and other ways in which they go after population centers,” he responded. “And I made it clear that if they go...

Media mogul Haim Saban sent an email to top White House aides criticizing President Joe Biden’s threat to withhold arms shipments to support an Israeli military invasion of Rafah.
In the email — reported by Axios and Israeli media outlets — Saban, a longtime major Democratic donor, called Biden’s threat a “bad…bad…bad decision on all levels. Pls reconsider.” The email was addressed to Steve Ricchetti and Anita Dunn, two of the president’s top aides.
“Even beyond Israel, this sends a terrible message to our allies in the region, and beyond that, we can flip from doing the right thing to bending to political pressure.”
He added, “Let’s not forget that there are more Jewish voters who care about Israel, than Muslims [sic] voters that care about Hamas.”

Joe Biden sat for an interview with a mainstream, national news outlet, — a not-too-common occurrence. And while the clear intent in his chat with CNN’s Erin Burnett was to show a contrast with Donald Trump on the economy, the headline was what the president said about Israel.
“I made it clear that if they go into Rafah — they haven’t gone into Rafah yet — but if they go into Rafah , I am not supplying the weapons that have been used historically to deal with Rafah, that deal with the cities, that deal with that problem,” Biden said. “We’re going to continue to make sure Israel is secure in terms of Iron Dome and their ability to respond to attacks… but it’s just wrong. We are not going to supply the weapons and artillery shells that have been used” by the Israelis.

President Joe Biden said that the U.S. would stop supplying weapons to Israel if the country proceeds with its siege in Rafah, where the majority of Gaza’s civilian population remains sheltered.
Biden addressed the issue in an interview with CNN’s Erin Burnett on Wednesday evening, saying he supported Israel’s security but drew the line at arming the country for an invasion in Rafah.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) shot back at Fox News after columnist Liz Peek wrote an op-ed in which she called the Georgia representative an “idiot.”
“It’s high time someone in the Republican Party told Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to turn all that bombastic self-serving showmanship and drama queen energy on Democrats and stop trying to defeat her own party,” Peek wrote in her op-ed, which was titled, “Marjorie Taylor Greene is an idiot. She is trying to wreck the GOP.”
Peek noted that the representative “would rather burn down the House, metaphorically speaking, than work towards the greater good.”
She added, “The greater good, unless she and her fellow discontents in Congress have forgotten, is defeating Joe Biden in November.”
She later mentioned in her op-ed that “the internal squabbles of the party” must end.

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-North Carolina) lashed out at Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia), stating that she is “bringing down brand of the Republican Party” and is placing the Republican Senate majority at risk.
“I think she’s uninformed,” Tillis stated in a clip played on CNN news anchor Erin Burnett.
“She is a total waste of time,” he added. “She is a horrible leader. She is dragging our brand down. She – not the Democrats – are the biggest risks to us getting back to a majority.”
The North Carolina senator’s comments came after Greene criticized the GOP’s move to pass a $95 billion foreign aid bill.
This bill, passed by the Senate on April 23 and signed by President Joe Biden the next day, includes aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan and provisions that might lead to a national ban on TikTok.

Jon Stewart led Monday’s episode of The Daily Show with Donald Trump’s hush money trial and dinged news networks for how they cover it.
“This trial will obviously be a test of the fairness of the American legal system, but it’s also a test of the media’s ability to cover Donald Trump in a responsible way. A task they have acknowledged they’ve performed poorly in the past,” Stewart said before a supercut of the media claiming they had learned their lesson on how to cover Trump.
The supercut included clips from all major cable news networks like CNN, MSNBC and Fox News. Stewart mocked the network’s personalities, adding, “I think from this trial we will see the seeds of that introspection bear fruit, or we will learn that learning curves are for pussies.”

Former GOP Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colorado) slammed GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene for getting talking points from Russian President Vladimir Putin while threatening to remove House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Now that Congress has returned from recess, Johnson has to figure out how he can pass new aid for Ukraine, something that far-right Republicans such as Greene oppose.
Greene slammed Johnson for holding a vote to fund Ukraine, saying it was one of the most “egregious things” he could do.
“Moscow Marjorie is focused now on this Ukraine issue, getting her talking points from the Kremlin, making sure she is popular, and getting a lot of coverage,’ Buck told CNN’s Erin Burnett Outfront.
Buck, one of the eight Republicans who voted to remove Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker, accused the Georgia representative of always focusing on her social media account instead of the national interest.

Independent presidential candidate Rober F. Kennedy Jr. has little chance of winning the 2024 election, but that isn’t stopping him from weighing in on the de facto Republican and Democratic nominees: former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden.

“I’m not paying his legal bills in any way, shape or form,” a somewhat irritated-seeming Elon Musk told Don Lemon of his meeting with Donald Trump.
The clip was one of a handful Lemon shared with his former-coworker Erin Burnett on CNN this afternoon. In it, Musk denies giving Trump money and says their recently-reported meeting only happened by chance.
“I was at a breakfast at a friend’s place and Donald Trump came by,” Musk told Lemon, before adding” That’s it,” as if to close the book on the subject.
But Lemon wasn’t done.
“What did you talk about?” he asked.
A clearly flustered Musk said, “Let’s just say he did most of the talking.”
Lemon then asked Musk if Trump asked him for money.
“He didn’t,” replied the billionaire.

In the pre-coverage of Joe Biden’s State of the Union address, the speech is being billed as the most important of his presidency, what with his dismal approval numbers and what is shaping up to be very difficult campaign for reelection.
Moreover, so much attention has been paid to the president’s age — at 81, he is the first octogenarian on a major party ticket — that any kind of slip up will be seized upon by his rivals.
Then again, Biden’s most memorable moment last year was an exchange with House Republicans over Social Security, showing that the president had command of the stage. That’s why it’ll be interesting to see if GOP members restrain themselves so as to not give the president the opportunity this year.

Fox News again topped the February ratings, while MSNBC saw double digit growth in total day and primetime.
The networks have had a mixed ratings picture so far during the election year, a time that has typically seen a large viewer uptick. But the dominance of Donald Trump and Joe Biden in the race for their parties’ nominations has likely had an impact, more than anything, on viewer interest, with much less suspense on the outcome.
That said, MSNBC did show gains. In primetime, the network averaged 1.35 million viewers, up 15% from the same period a year earlier. Fox News was still well ahead of its rivals with an average of 2.07 million, but that was down 9%. CNN posted 573,000, down 2%.
In the 25-54 demo, Fox News averaged 231,000, down 23%, while MSNBC posted 122,000, up 3%, and CNN was at 116,000, down 5%.
In total day, Fox News averaged 1.34 million, down 7%, while MSNBC was at 852,000, up 20%, and CNN...

Have you heard it’s cold in Des Moines? The subzero temperatures are making Monday’s caucuses in Iowa the coldest on record, a running theme of coverage throughout the day and into this evening. It’s not trivial, as the frigid weather may very well impact turnout.
As Iowa’s first votes of the 2024 presidential race come in, expect a lot of analysis, punditry and prediction, even if the results represent just a sliver of the primary electorate. The Hawkeye state’s primacy as the first-in-the-nation often obscures the peculiarities of the caucus system, unless there is some kind of glitch, which is what happened four years ago with the Democrats.
That said, networks see the caucuses as the kickoff of what is hoped a spike in viewer interest in the presidential contest, as was seen in 2020 and 2016. All of the broadcast networks are planning for ongoing coverage of...

CNN Max is attracting users who are “20 years younger” than traditional TV viewers, according to Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav.
In a commentary provided for investors following Wbd’s third-quarter results announcement Wednesday, Zaslav said his team had been “analyzing everything” to do with the new streaming service since its launch in October. The evidence was as expected before launch: It is attracting much younger viewers who don’t subscribe to cable to its suite of live news and analysis programs and original shows.
Wbd will “continue to iterate and improve the offer,” added Zaslav. “But the key takeaway here is we saw an opportunity and were able to pivot quickly, seamlessly and decisively and by providing CNN Max as a service we’re expanding our audience and our impact. The fact is what CNN does has never been more important or impact and no one does it better.

Update: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israeli soldiers are now in the Gaza strip, in what he characterized as the next stage of the war with Hamas.
Appearing at a press conference that was covered on major news networks, Netanyahu said that ground forces have gone into Gaza, entering the terrritory through the “gates of evil,” with the objective of eradicating Hamas’ military capabilities and to retrieve hostages.
“Our brave troops and combatants are now in Gaza or around Gaza,” he said.
He also pushed back against accusations that Israel was committing war crimes, saying that it was Hamas that was using people as “human shields,” per the BBC. He said that Israeli Defense Forces were taking steps to try to protect civilians.
Netanyahu said that the Israeli troops “are deployed all over’ the Gaza strip.
He said that they decided to expand operations in Gaza in a “very educated” manner.

In a real-time reminder of the dangers of covering international conflict, CNN anchor Sara Sidner was reporting live from the West Bank city of Ramallah when a man accosted her on-air to voice criticism of the network’s coverage of the Israel-Hamas War.
“You are genocide supporters. You are not welcome here, genocide supporters,” said a man who came up to Sidner while she was in the middle of reporting on air. “Fuck CNN! Fuck CNN! Genocide supporters.” The scene was transmitted live during “CNN This Morning,” the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed network’s regular A.M. program
Sidner maintained her composure, but there were a few moments on screen when CNN’s cameras appeared to be forced back from her. Security personnel were seen moving in to her position, and, after a few moments, escorting her away from the scene. She continued to respond to anchor Erin Burnett, on...

CNN’s Jake Tapper spent part of this Sunday morning speaking to National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan about the Israeli blockade of Gaza, which impacts a population of over 2 million people, approximately half of whom are under 18.
Tapper acknowledged that Israel’s assault against Gaza is “a different situation” than Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but asked: “But cutting off supplies, cutting off heat, cutting off water to civilians. What’s the difference?”
Sullivan replied, “Well, first, thank you for saying that Israel is not Russia, because Israel is not Russia–” to which the CNN host interjected, “Civilians are civilians, Jake! Civilians are civilians!”
This outburst caused Sullivan to pause, and he agreed, “Yes, absolutely they are. And they deserve, as I said before, access to water and medicine and food.”
Sullivan assured Tapper that Israel “turned the water pipe back on in southern Gaza” but made it clear that so far,...

At least one of the big companies that distribute CNN via cable or satellite is unnerved by how closely the company’s new live-streaming service looks like its TV network.
Big satellite distributor DirecTV has let executives at Warner Bros. Discovery know via letter that its executives believe the similarities between the two products violate the carriage contract between the two companies, according to a person familiar with the matter. The new CNN streaming service, CNN Max, just launched last week and includes many of programs that run on linear CNN, including “CNN This Morning,” “The Lead With Jake Tapper” and “Anderson Cooper 360.”
The New York Times previously reported the contretemps between DirecTV and Warner Bros. Discovery.
“Wbd maintains strong and meaningful relationships with our affiliate partners. Our partners are aware of and understand our rationale with Max, which is to reach new audiences,” Warner Bros. Discovery said in a statement.

The contentious relationship between pay-tv providers and media companies isn’t getting any better as the evolution from traditional linear viewing to streaming accelerates. On the heels of multiple carriage and retransmission disagreements, the latest dispute is of a different breed. When Warner Bros. Discovery announced that it would be bringing CNN branded news programming to its flagship streaming service Max, it raised a lot of the questions that onlookers had with the ill-fated CNN+ in 2022. Namely, how do you bring the live news coverage that viewers expect from the CNN brand without infringing on the carriage agreements that you have with cable, satellite, and live TV streaming services?
