R&b Singer Roberta Flack, Known For Song “Killing Me Softly,” Dies At 88
Image
R&b vocalist Roberta Flack passed away on Feb. 24 at 88. A representative said, “We are heartbroken that the glorious Roberta Flack passed away this morning, Feb. 24, 2025.”

The statement continued, “She died peacefully surrounded by her family. Roberta broke boundaries and records. She was also a proud educator.” Flack was catapulted into fame with her hits “The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face” and “Killing Me Softly With His Song.” The former song became a hit in 1971, two years after its release, when Clint Eastwood used it in his directorial debut, Play Misty for Me. In 1974, she released the song “Where Is the Love,” which dominated boththe pop and R&b charts.

Flack was born in Black Mountain, North Carolina, and was musically inspired by the gospel work of Mahalia Jackson and Sam Cooke. Starting her studies on piano at age nine, She attended Howard University in Washington, D.C.

‘The Shining’: THR’s 1980 Review
Image
On June 13, 1980, Warner Bros. bowed Stanley Kubrick’s psychological horror film The Shining in theaters nationwide. The film, starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall, went on to gross $47 million and endure perpetually as one of the titles routinely mentioned as among the scariest movies of all time. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:

After viewing Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, I find myself wishing that Kubrick, like Graham Greene, would let us know when he’s being serious and when he’s merely providing us with “an entertainment.” The main problem that I had with this Warner release, based on Stephen King’s popular novel, is that I couldn’t decide whether Kubrick was trying to impress the hell out of us with all of his juggling of time, or simply trying to scare the hell out of us as Jack Nicholson runs berserk with an ax. Somehow,...

Carla Gugino to Play ‘Gone With the Wind’ Star Vivien Leigh in Biopic ‘The Florist’ (Exclusive)
Image
Carla Gugino has been tapped to play Hollywood screen legend Vivien Leigh in the forthcoming biopic “The Florist.”

The film is directed by Nick Sandow (star of “Orange is the New Black”) and will explore Leigh’s struggle with bipolar disorder in the 1960s, as she prepares to lead the Broadway production of John Gielgud’s Chekhov adaptation of “Ivanov.” Screenwriter Jayce Bartok (“The Cake Eaters”) put the script together based on a box of love letters.

Leigh earned her place in cinema history as Scarlett O’Hara, the central character in 1939’s “Gone With the Wind,” opposite Clark Gable. Leigh also played the landmark role of Blanche DuBois opposite Marlon Brando in 1951’s “A Streetcar Named Desire.”

“I couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity to excavate a woman as complex, contradictory, and compelling as Vivien. From the moment I read the script, I knew ‘The Florist’ was a journey I had to pursue,...

‘Founders Day’ Review: Political Backstabbing Turns Literal in Semi-Comedic Slasher
Image
“Divisive” has become the fallback term for just about any political personality or issue in recent years, so bitter have differences between the two parties and many of their adherents become. The more fanatical beliefs to be found in an era of increasingly alarmist rhetoric have already provided inspiration for some horror movies, primarily smaller indie productions. The new “Founders Day,” which opens Jan. 19 on 700-plus U.S. screens, is slicker than most such while also more overt in pivoting on political rancor.

But you can’t make a pointed movie about politics — not even a semi-tongue-in-cheek genre film — without political content, and Erik Bloomquist’s feature proves toothless in that regard. Apparently afraid to offend anyone, despite numerous murders onscreen, it centers on a hostile mayoral race between candidates who posture stereotypically yet seem to have no discernible platform, ideology or affiliations on the liberal-to-conservative continuum. That renders the intended satire feeble,...

‘Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls’ – 10 Things We Learned from the Blu-ray Commentaries
Image
If you enjoyed Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls on Screambox, the Blu-ray is a treasure trove. The horror-comedy is accompanied by three different commentary tracks featuring writer-director-editor-star Andrew Bowser and various crew members, among other special features.

Bowser is naturally funny, seamlessly slipping in Onyx-isms, but he’s also not afraid to get real. There’s a solo director’s track, a commentary focused on the production alongside actress/producer Olivia Taylor Dudley and producer Clark Baker, and a sound commentary joined by sound designer/supervising sound editor Mike James Gallagher.

Here are 10 things I learned from the Onyx the Fortuitous commentaries…

1. The film was intended to start with Bartok removing his eye.

Bowser intended to give viewers a taste of the horrors to come with a cold open that would introduce Jeffrey Combs as Bartok the Great in a scene in which he removes his own eye.

10 Best Non-Disney Villain Animated Henchmen We All Love
Image
Non-Disney henchmen come in various forms, from animals to humans to supernatural creatures, and they come from different universes and time periods. These henchmen exhibit a wide range of personalities and skills, from scheming and successful to bumbling and silly, but all have a deep devotion to their masters. Despite their often comical or intimidating appearances, non-Disney henchmen are capable of surprising acts of loyalty, bravery, and even redemption.

While Disney villains and their sidekicks stand in a category all their own, there are plenty of non-Disney animated villains who have great henchmen supporting their nefarious plans. These henchmen range from scheming and successful, like Herb Overkill from Minions or downright cruel without any redeeming qualities, like Prince Charming in the Shrek franchise. Some henchmen are bumbling and silly but want to do everything they can to help their masters.

The best non-Disney henchmen ranked included animals, humans, and even supernatural creatures.

Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls Review
Image
Horror comedy can be a delightful genre, but it isn't easy to get it right. The idea behind making a great horror comedy is to blend the grotesque and macabre with light-hearted humor, but finding the right mix can be difficult. With Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls, writer, director, and lead actor Andrew Bowser creates a perfect blend of supernatural horror and outrageous comedy that is heavy on heart. This audacious indie flick feels like Beetlejuice by way of National Lampoon and is incredibly entertaining. Jam-packed with ambitious creature designs and hilarious dialogue, Onyx the Fortuitous is the perfect film for viewers who don't love scary movies but still crave a spooky cinematic treat.

Bowser stars as the title character, a bumbling fast-food employee and amateur satanist who wins a contest held by his idol, Bartok the Great (Jeffrey Combs). The contest allows five lucky Satanists to...

Legends' Sword Of The Jedi Goes To Battle In Stunning Star Wars Art
Image
Jake Bartok, a talented Star Wars fan artist, has created a stunning illustration of Jaina Solo, one of the most popular characters from the Star Wars Expanded Universe. Bartok's illustration perfectly captures Jaina's resemblance to her mother and stays consistent with previous Star Wars book cover illustrations of the character. There were plans for a Sword of the Jedi trilogy that would have explored Jaina's role in the New Jedi Order, which unfortunately got canceled when Disney acquired the franchise. However, if new stories set in the Legends continuity are approved, Jaina could potentially make a comeback.

An outstanding Star Wars fan artist has perfectly illustrated Jaina Solo, whom Luke Skywalker named the "Sword of the Jedi" in the Legends continuity. Alongside her twin brother Jacen Solo, Jaina was born to Han Solo and Leia Organa five years after the Battle of Endor, growing up to become a...

Jedi Baylan Skoll & Shin Hati Revealed In Stunning Star Wars Fan Art
Image
A thrilling Star Wars illustration envisions a young Jedi Baylan Skoll and his relationship with Shin Hati, offering a wholesome backstory for these intriguing villains. The artwork by Jake Bartok showcases a younger version of Baylan Skoll with a green lightsaber, while still giving Shin Hati an orange blade, suggesting a complex dynamic between light and dark. Baylan's past as a Jedi, his role during the Clone Wars, and his connection to Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader present mysteries that should be explored in Ahsoka season 2 or future Star Wars projects.

A thrilling Star Wars illustration depicts Ahsoka's Baylan Skoll as a young Jedi, revealing how he and Shin Hati may have looked when they first met. Ray Stevenson's Baylan Skoll was the best part of Ahsoka season 1, and his master/relationship with Ivanna Sakhno's Shin Hati was surprisingly wholesome for a pair of villains. It demands a...

‘Founders Day’ Toronto After Dark Film Festival Review – A Mixed Bag Political Slasher
Image
Slashers often contain political elements, but we rarely see a slasher about politics. Enter Founders Day, from co-writers Carson Blomquist and Erik Blomquist.

The town of Fairwood is celebrating its tricentennial and there’s a mayoral election on the horizon. The incumbent, Mayor Blair Gladwell (Amy Hargreaves), is campaigning on consistency, while her adversary, Harold Faulkner (Jayce Bartok), is advocating change. Divided along campaign lines are their children: Faulkner’s put-upon lesbian daughter Melissa (Olivia Nikkanen) and his son Adam (Devin Druid) who used to date Gladwell’s daughter Lilly (Emilia McCarthy).

The star-crossed lovers of competing political parents is a tantalizing premise, but Founders Day packs innumerable other characters and subplots into the mix. Adam and Lilly’s failed relationship involves bad boy Rob (Tyler James White), there’s plenty of plotting among the town council involved in the election, and even Melissa’s girlfriend Allison (Naomi Grace) has...

Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls Review

Plot: Onyx the Fortuitous is struggling to find purpose with his soul-devouring side gig when he receives a coveted invitation to the mansion of his idol, Bartok the Great. Here, he joins Bartok and his mysterious delegation to raise the spirit of an ancient demon for a once-in-a-lifetime ritual.

Review: Adaptations are always tricky, let alone trying to adapt something like a character from YouTube. Yet somehow Andrew Bowser’s Onyx the Fortuitous works really well in the narrative here. Sure, there are going to be people that are driven crazy by his delivery but I found myself oddly charmed by it. And it doesn’t hurt that there’s a spectacular cast surrounding him that provides plenty of hilarity. I would hope that most know what they’re getting into when it comes to something called Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls. But you never know.

Interview: Barbara Crampton talks about Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls
Image
Barbara Crampton is an absolute legend in the world of horror. Whether it’s her classic films from the 80s like Re-Animator or From Beyond, or more recent fare like You’re Next or Jakob’s Wife, she’s had quite the career. And her newest role in Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls may not be a particularly prominent one, but it leaves an impact. Because if there’s one thing we haven’t seen enough from her in her career, it’s comedy. So I was absolutely overjoyed to be able to discuss the film with her and find out some of the film’s secrets, I loved the film and can’t wait for people to see it (in theaters for One Night Only!). So check out the video above if you want to see how she got her Re-Animator co-star Jeffrey Combs involved with the project,...

[#Fantasia2023 Review] From Internet Meme To Movie Hero: Onyx The Fortuitous And The Talisman Of Souls
You’ve seen “Onyx The Fortuitous” on Youtube where he hijacks news reports with his odd personality and motormouth. Now he is coming to the big screen with his full-length feature Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls, written, directed and starring Andrew Bowser, based on his internet-famous character also known as the “Weird Satanist Guy.” After a successful crowdfunding campaign to finance part of the production, the throwback horror comedy has been shown at Sundance, Glasgow FrightFest, and more recently, Fantasia Film Fest.

My first exposure to Onyx the Fortuitous was hearing his voice in the intro of Iron Reagan’s 12-second banger “Your Kid’s An Asshole”. Wanting to find the source of said sample, I stumbled upon his viral videos and wondered if this guy was for real and, if so, how did he manage to always be in the right place at the right time to get an interview?...

Image
Fans of gateway horror get ready for Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls, an unbelievably fun horror movie that harkens back to classics such as Beetlejuice, Ernest Scared Stupid, and even Pee-wee’s Big Adventure.

The film was a big hit at the Sundance Film Festival and is next set to play the Calgary Underground Film Festival before making its way to theaters this fall. We’re told huge news is imminent.

To commemorate the screening in Calgary, the filmmakers have created a hilarious poster exclusively for the event that gives homage to Re-Animator and celebrates Onyx star Jeffrey Combs!

“100 copies will be sold online and 150 copies will be available in person at the festival. Designed by Nate Maldonado, the art is numbered and autographed by Onyx director and star Andrew Bowser!”

The art gets into the mind of Andrew Bowser’s Onyx, which obsesses over everything from Alf to Satan.
