Paramount Pictures has added a third “Angry Birds Movie” to its release slate, setting it for January 29, 2027.

Paramount takes over as distributor from Sony Pictures, which released the first “Angry Birds Movie” from Rovio Animation in 2016, grossing $352 million worldwide. The film yielded a 2019 sequel that didn’t fly nearly as high with $152.2 million, though insiders at Paramount say that the films have seen robust viewership on streaming over the past five years.

Rovio returns as producers on the film with Sega, which acquired Rovio and “Angry Birds” in 2023 and which has partnered with Paramount on the “Sonic the Hedgehog” films. Brahma, the AI arm of visual effects firm Dneg Group, has acquired Metaphysic, the company whose recent calling card was de-aging Tom Hanks and Robin Wright in the 2024 film Here.

The deal will enable Brahma to deliver more AI offerings for enterprise, IP rightsholders and content creators in the film business and other industries. Brahma will develop foundational AI, data, and content workflow and management technologies as part of a suite of products across video, image and audio.

Dneg Group is known for its work on major franchises like Dune and tentpoles including Blade Runner: 2049, Tenet and Interstellar.

After the transaction, Brahma will have more than 800 engineers and creative technologists in its global workforce. They will be able to leverage Ziva Technologies tools licensed by Dneg for the creation of digital human and character simulations. Dneg Group is also the privately held parent of VFX giant Dneg, whose work on “Dune: Part Two” won a BAFTA on Sunday and is VFX Oscar nominated; Prime Focus, developer of the Clear asset management tools; and Ziva, a 3D character creation toolmaker that Dneg acquired last year.

Dune VFX house Dneg Group and its Brahma division have made a big swing in acquiring Metaphysic, a developer of artificial intelligence content creation technologies.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the agreement includes Abu Dhabi-based investor United Al Saqer Group and the Dneg Group investing another $25 million into Brahma, an AI and content technologies company launched by Dneg Group. In addition, Thomas Graham, CEO of Metaphysic and president of Brahma, will become CEO of Brahma when the transaction is completed.

“Brahma offers every business a strategy for generative AI content creation, from owning their data to delivering amazing, user-customized AI content across video, image, and audio,” Graham said in a statement on Tuesday about the acquisition deal for his company. Dneg, the London-headquartered visual effects and animation house that has won Oscars for the likes of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune and Netflix’s Stranger Things, said Tuesday it secured a $200 million investment from the Abu Dhabi-based United Al Saqar Group.

Dneg is also the preferred visual effects creator for Christopher Nolan on movies like Inception, Interstellar and Tenet. Exclusive: Joaquim De Almeida has joined the cast of Legendary’s Animal Friends, the live-action and animated hybrid pic from writing duo Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider. Peter Atencio directed the R-rated Road trip adventure.

He joins a cast that includes Ryan Reynolds, Jason Momoa, Aubrey Plaza, Daniel Levy, Addison Rae, Lil Rel Howery, and Ellie Bamber. Producing alongside Legendary are Reynolds’ Maximum Effort and producer Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios. Visual effects and animation will be provided by visual entertainment services company, Dneg. The idea for the film came from a general meeting between Burrows and Mider and Maximum Effort executive, Patrick Gooing.

Exclusive: Hundreds more layoffs are incoming at Dune and Oppenheimer VFX firm Dneg.

Deadline is told that the outfit has kicked off a consultation process in at least the UK and Canada, which could see an exodus of around 5% of Dneg’s circa-10,000-strong global workforce. Dneg had not responded to comment requests by press time.

Layoffs are understood to be somewhat concentrated within R&d teams and are a response to the challenged market, which has not eased up since the Hollywood strikes ended and has not improved sufficiently after Dneg brought in a pay offer for staff last year.

In the UK, where sources say the number of layoffs is predicted to be around 100, Bectu boss Philippa Childs said the union is “continuing to do everything we can to support our members who are affected by these redundancies.”

The partners also unveiled what they described as “two of the world’s largest LED volume stages” in London and Rome.

Chris Pratt’s plot to dominate the world of iconic characters continues in the wake of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” with the first trailer for “The Garfield Movie,” in which the “Guardians of the Galaxy” actor voices the titular gluttonous cat.

The trailer opens with something of a fake-out, as it sweetly chronicles the origin of Garfield and Andy’s relationship with the story of a lost little kitty cat who happens upon a lonely man at an Italian eatery.
