Knight is the creator of Peaky Blinders, an acclaimed series which ran for six seasons on Netflix from 2013 to 2022. Now, a Peaky Blinders movie is in development. The Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild (Muahs, IATSE Local 706) has announced the nominees for the 12th annual Muahs Guild Awards, with The Penguin, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, The Substance and The Deliverance leading the competition with three nods each.

Max’s The Penguin received nominations for best special make-up effects, best contemporary hairstyling and best contemporary make-up, with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice receiving nods for best period and/or character make-up, best period and/or character hairstyling and best special make-up effects. (Secret’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice “Lifesaver” commercial was also nominated for best make-up and best hairstyling.) Right behind with two nominations are “Gladiator II,” “Wicked,” and “Deadpool and Wolverine,” while other Oscar hopefuls like “Emilia Pérez,” and “A Different Man” scored a single bid. Notably missing from the nominations are “Nosferatu” and “Dune: Part Two.”

Last season, “Maestro” and “Saltburn” each took home two awards from the guild. While “Saltburn” was snubbed by the Oscars, “Maestro” was nominated but lost to “Poor Things.”

On the TV side, “Dancing with the Stars” led the way with five nominations.

Winners will be announced on Feb. 15. As previously announced, makeup artist Todd McIntosh and hair stylist Peter Tothpal will receive lifetime achievement awards.

Horror dominated the nominations for the 12th annual Muahs Guild Awards, with “The Substance,” “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” and the surprising “The Deliverance” each nabbing three nominations apiece. The makeup and hairstyling awards will take place Saturday, February 15, 2025, at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel.

“The Substance,” Coralie Fargeat’s body horror fairy tale starring Demi Moore, earned nominations for Best Contemporary Makeup, Best Special Makeup Effects, and Best Contemporary Hairstyling.

Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which marks the return of Michael Keaton’s foul-mouth ghoul from the afterlife, snagged Best Period and/or Character Makeup, Best Special Makeup Effects, and Best Period and/or Character Hairstyling.

“The Deliverance,” Lee Daniels’ supernatural horror film based on the Ammons haunting case, also scored nominations for Best Contemporary Makeup, Best Special Makeup Effects, and Best Contemporary Hairstyling.

Coralie’s Fargeat’s “The Substance,” “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and “The Deliverance” led the 12th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Award nominations.

The body horror of Fargeat’s “The Substance” resonated with the make-up and hair stylist guild with three nominations. Special effects artist Pierre Olivier Persin explained that Fargeat wanted to use practical effects, instead of digital CGI, where possible. 70-80% of what was seen in the film was practical, including the MonstroElisaSue creation which features at the end.

“Gladiator 2” and “Deadpool and Wolverine” each landed two nominations a piece. Other films that scored include “Shirley,” “Bob Marley: One Love” and “The Last Showgirl.”

Missing from the nominations were nods for “Maria,” “Nosferatu” and “Dune: Part II.”

In the television category, “Dancing With the Stars” landed five nominations across the hair and make-up categories.

The Academy Awards are easily the most prestigious awards in the movie industry, with the first ceremony taking place in 1929. Across the history of the Academy Awards, there have been many award categories that have been added and retired across the years; most recently the award for Best Sound Editing, which was retired in 2019.

In 2024, the Oscars announced the creation of a new awards category that will recognize a movie's casting decision. The first Academy Award for Best Achievement In Casting will be awarded at the 98th ceremony in 2025; this is the first new award category since the creation of the Best Feature Film category in 2001. Further new categories may be created in the future as seen in the movie industry's campaign for a Best Stunt Award.

It was followed by Poor Things, which won four awards (including best actress for Emma Stone) and was nominated for 11. Killers of the Flower Moon earned 10 noms but left the show empty-handed, while Barbie was nominated for eight Oscars and won best original song for “I’m Just Ken.”

Weekly Commentary: Another deathmatch between two movies — Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein biopic “Maestro” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ sci-fi comedy “Poor Things.”

“Maestro” won big at the Makeup and Hair guild while “Poor Things” took home the BAFTA prize.

Last year, Brendan Fraser won Best Actor for “The Whale,” which also won Best Makeup and Hairstyling for artists Adrien Morot, Judy Chin, and Annemarie Bradley. This is a combination of Oscar categories that have popped up several times over the years. But could it happen again this year? Well, theoretically, yes.

The brilliant makeup artist Kazu Hiro, also known as Kazuhiro Tsuji, turned Bradley Cooper into Leonard Bernstein in Netflix’s “Maestro.” Kazu Hiro landed himself an Oscar nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside Kay Georgiou and Lori McCoy-Bell. Meanwhile, Cooper is nominated for Best Actor.

Along with “The Whale,” several other movies have done well with this pair of Oscar categories. In 2018, “Darkest Hour” won Best Actor for Gary Oldman and Hiro won Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick. In 2014, “Dallas Buyers Club” won both awards, too, with Matthew McConaughey winning for acting...

The films up for the 2024 Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar are “Golda,” “Maestro,” “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” and “Society of the Snow.” Our current odds show that “Maestro” (10/3) is favored to win, followed in order by “Poor Things” (71/20), “Oppenheimer” (9/2), “Society of the Snow” (9/2), and “Golda” (9/2).

This lineup is the category’s second in a row to include a 54% first-timer majority, thus constituting a new trend after 70% remained the norm for the preceding half decade. “Oppenheimer” won big at the BAFTA Awards, taking home seven gongs including Best Picture and Best Director for Christopher Nolan. But Searchlight Pictures’ “Poor Things” was close behind with a total tally of five victories.

The Yorgos Lanthimos movie won Best Actress for Emma Stone, Best Production Design for Zsuzsa Mihalek (who wasn’t present), Shona Heath, and James Price, Best Costume Design for Holly Waddington, Best Makeup and Hair for Nadia Stacey, Mark Coulier, and Josh Weston, and Best Visual Effects for Simon Hughes.

The first of the below winners to speak to the press was Hughes, who discussed his role in creating the world of “Poor Things.” “That’s where you have to acknowledge Shona Heath and James Price, the two production designers on the film because it’s their vision. “Maestro” did well at the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild on Feb. 18 winning two of its three bids. It claimed the prizes for both period/character makeup and special effects races but lost period/character hairstyling to “Barbie,” which was snubbed by the Oscars. Likewise for “Saltburn,” which won both contemporary makeup and hairstyling.

Of this year’s other Oscar nominees, “Poor Things” lost all three of its bids just hours after pulling off an upset at the BAFTAs, “Golda” and “Oppenheimer” were each defeated in a single race while “Society of the Snow” was snubbed by the guild.

These wins boost the odds for “Maestro” to prevail at the Academy Awards. In the decade-long history of these guild honors, there has been just one year when an Muahs winner did not go on to claim the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

The Oscar-frontrunning “Maestro” was the big winner at the 11th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards (held February 18 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein opus took period/character makeup and special makeup effects. This puts “Maestro” in the Oscar driver’s seat (led by two-time winner Kazu Hiro) against “Poor Things,” “Oppenheimer,” “Golda,” and “Society of the Snow.”

Two non-Oscar competitors, “Saltburn”and “Barbie,” split the other wins: Emerald Fennell’s psychological thriller grabbed both contemporary makeup and hairstyling, while Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster snagged period/character hairstyling.

The Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild (IATSE Local 706) announced winners of its 11th annual awards on Saturday, with Amazon MGM Studios’ Saltburn taking home two Muahs Awards for best contemporary make-up and best contemporary hair styling. Netflix’s Maestro also picked up a pair of honors for best period and/or character make-up and best special make-up effects.

Warner Bros.’ Barbie also won in the feature film categories, taking the prize for best period and/or character hair styling.

Winners in the television categories include Netflix’s The Crown, HBO’s The Last of Us, Apple TV+’s The Morning Show and Netflix’s Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. ABC’s Dancing With the Stars won three awards for best contemporary make-up, best contemporary hair styling and best period and/or character hair styling. NBC’s Saturday Night Live won two awards for best period and/or character make-up and best special make-up effects.

The guild held its 11th annual awards ceremony Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Michael Westmore was presented with the Vanguard Award for his work on “Rocky,” “Star Trek,” “Mask” and “Raging Bull.” Kevin Haney received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his work on “Driving Miss Daisy,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and “Hocus Pocus 2.”

The winners of the 2024 Ee Bafta Film Awards were announced tonight in a ceremony hosted by David Tennant at the Royal Festival Hall in London and broadcast on BBC One and iPlayer. The Ee Baftas celebrate the very best in film of the past year. In addition, the Ee Bafta Film Awards were streamed on BritBox International in the USA and Canada. Viewers at home also had front row seats to the red-carpet arrivals on Bafta’s YouTube, featuring interviews with nominees and other special guests. Oppenheimer took home the most trophies with seven Baftas, including: Best Film, Director for Christopher Nolan, Leading Actor for Cillian Murphy, Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., Cinematography, Editing, and Original Score. The Zone of Interest is the first film to win both the Outstanding British Film and Film Not in the English Language categories. Oppenheimer dominated the BAFTA awards with 13 nominations, including wins for Best Editing, Best Score, and Best Cinematography. Robert Downey Jr. emotionally accepted the Best Actor award for his role in Oppenheimer, thanking his mentors and co-stars. Despite tough competition, Oppenheimer continues to shine as it marches towards potential Oscar glory next month.

The 2024 Bafta Film Awards ceremony is taking place today (February 18) at London’s Royal Festival Hall on the Southbank.

The show started at around 4:45pm UK time and finishes at approximately 8pm, and will be broadcast with a time delay on BBC One starting at 7pm. Unlike last year’s ceremony, the final categories will not be broadcast live. David Tennant is on hosting duties.

Some categories go together naturally, like Best Picture and Best Director. It’s no different in the below-the-line categories, either, with Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling having an interesting relationship with one another.

The three design awards are often paired or grouped together as a trio and awarded to the same film. Most recently, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” won both Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. “I like the fact that we were both new to it,” says Oscar-nominated composer Jerskin Fendrix while discussing his relationship with “Poor Things” director Yorgos Lanthimos. It was the musician’s first time scoring a movie and the filmmaker’s first time commissioning original music. “There was kind of a flirty coyness to the whole process. Both of us didn’t really know what we were doing and it was very sweet.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

The UK and Irish film industries are well represented in the Oscar nominations this year with Poor Things and The Zone Of Interest scoring a respective 11 and five nominations.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things bagged the second-highest number of nominations, behind only Oppenheimer. These included best picture for the UK-us-Ireland co-production between Element Pictures and Searchlight Pictures, with backing from Film4.

Also scoring nods was Poor Things’ Irish cinematographer Robbie Ryan; UK production designers Shona Heath and James Price; musician Jerskin Fendrix in score; costume designer Holly Waddington; and the make-up and hairstyling team of Nadia Stacey, Mark Coulier and Josh Weston.

Nominations for the 96th Academy Awards were announced today in a live presentation from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
