The former leader of theater-owner’s group NATO has a new way to get your independent film into movie theaters — one intended to cut out the middleman.

John Fithian is launching an online marketplace to connect filmmakers directly with exhibitors. The platform is called “Attend,” and it puts the “intelligence” into its artificial intelligence. Attend’s tech, powered by the Vista Group, pairs filmmakers with the specific theaters best suited to their movie. For exhibitors, Attend is a portal to a broader range of content. This way, filmmakers retain the rights to their movie, and exhibitors keep control over their screens.

Sorry about all of that, distributors.

A filmmaker uploads details about (and assets from) their films directly into Attend, including metadata and other specifics. The platform’s AI will match the movie with theaters based on their customer data, local demographics, and affinity groups.

Attend will launch an alpha phase in the U.

The process of turning Laura Lippman’s 2019 novel Lady in the Lake into an Apple TV+ limited series began more than three years ago and involves the series’ late executive producer, Jean-Marc Vallée, who died suddenly in late December 2021.

Vallée and producing partner Nathan Ross had read the book, with Ross checking it out quickly after its release thanks to a rave review from Stephen King in The New York Times. Ross told Vallée about the novel, thinking of Natalie Portman for the role of Maddie Schwartz, and Vallée wanted Alma Har’el for the project due to her work on the film Honey Boy, Shia Labeouf’s semiautobiographical drama.

The Baltimore production of the Apple TV+ series “Lady in the Lake” was halted on Friday afternoon after the producers decided to “err on the side of caution” after receiving threats of violence.

The Baltimore police department confirmed that a group of locals contacted producers working a shoot on Park Avenue in the downtown area at around 4 p.m. on Friday. The group threatened to return in the evening to shoot somebody if production didn’t cease. Producers were also told to pay a sum of 50,000 to the group before production would be allowed to continue.

Leaders on the series elected to reschedule filming and look for another location after receiving the message, according to the police department.

Representatives for Apple TV+ were not immediately available for comment. It remains unclear if production has resumed since the incident.

“Lady in the Lake” filming began in April and is expected to continue through the fall.

As you’ve likely heard by now, French Canadian filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallée died unexpectedly at the age of 58 over the weekend. Longtime producing partner Nathan Ross confirmed his death in a statement shared with various trades. According to Vallée’s rep (via The Hollywood Reporter), he died suddenly from a suspected heart attack in his cabin near Quebec City, Canada.

The Quebecois director Jean-Marc Vallée is being remembered by the entertainment industry, with heartfelt tributes emerging from the late filmmaker’s peers and collaborators.
