Thirty-five years after David Cronenberg’s “Dead Ringers” made a pioneering splash in the body horror film genre, Prime Video’s new Rachel Weisz-led series is anything but a “straight remake.”

“It’s such an incredible iconic film, and we never wanted to do a straight remake, or anything other than really just pay homage, but also find our own storyline,” creator Alice Birch told TheWrap. “It’s really all about the twins.”

The thriller series follows Elliot and Beverly Mantle — twins played by Weisz with the same name as the leads in the 1988 flick — whose co-dependence seeps into virtually each segment of their life. In the film, the twins played by Jeremy Irons worked as gynecologists; Weisz’s Beverly and Elliot work as obstetricians.

The more reserved Beverly is content with delivering babies as she tries for her own, while Elliot is focused on pushing the boundaries of maternal health into unethical territory.

Two heads are better than one, or so the saying goes. Rachel Weisz is set to put that theory into practice in her new series “Dead Ringers,” which premieres Friday, April 21 on Prime Video. Amazon’s six-episode limited series adaptation of David Cronenberg’s 1988 feature Dead Ringers isn’t a perfect series, but in at least three key ways it’s a perfect piece of intellectual property mining.

First, series creator Alice Birch (Normal People) has a clear reason for wanting to tackle Cronenberg’s twisted tale of identical twin gynecologists, using the added narrative real estate of television and the passing of 35 years as fodder for an examination of reproductive freedom and the fertility industry that’s entirely its own. It’s a spectacular thematic vehicle.

Of equal importance, Dead Ringers is a spectacular acting vehicle, and in Elliot and Beverly Mantle, Rachel Weisz has the best role, or dual roles, of her decorated career, a mixture of uncompromising intensity, bleak humor and extended heartbreak that’s as satisfying to watch as it clearly was to play.

If you're a horror fan, your attention is probably piqued, considering the original film is one of the horror maestro David Cronenberg's oeuvre, but how does it look?

In the sneak peek, we meet Rachel Weisz's version of characters played by Jeremy Irons in the original movie. Weisz plays twin doctor siblings who seem to be going to crazy lengths to change the face of women's healthcare. According to the streamer, the synopsis reads:

Rachel Weisz will portray not one but two corrupt doctors in a new interpretation of a 1980s medical thriller, "Dead Ringers." Weisz will star as identical twin physicians in an adaptation of David Cronenberg's movie of the same name, and on Feb. 28, Prime Video released the first teaser, which makes it clear the series promises to be as bloody and disturbing as the original.

The first "Dead Ringers," which came out in 1988, starred Jeremy Irons as identical twin gynecologists who often seduce their patients. When one of the brothers falls in love with a patient, though, it leads to a rift between the twins that ultimately has deadly consequences. The story was loosely inspired by the true story of Stewart and Cyril Marcus, two identical twin gynecologists who lost their licenses and were later found dead of barbiturate overdoses in one of their Manhattan apartments.

Although we recently got our first look at the upcoming David Cronenberg remake "Dead Ringers," we hadn't actually gotten to see any of the bizarre action to come on Prime Video. Luckily, that has now changed, because the streamer has released its first, albeit very brief look at the limited series. Don't expect to spot any major plot details with this 40-second teaser, but you will spot two very different Rachel Weiszs in bloody lab coats. You may think you know why if you saw the 1988 David Cronenberg original starring Jeremy Irons, but will that be the case with this new take? Who knows! Regardless, this teaser has us sold.

What we do know is that Prime Video's take on "Dead Ringers" looks appropriately moody and downright creepy. Come on, if you are adapting a Cronenberg work, you need to embrace the weirdness that is so synonymous with his stories.
