Dancing With The Stars lost some celebrated alumni in 2022, and they have been remembered as the year came to a close. Dancing With The Stars has aired for 31 seasons, and some of the most beloved celebrities have competed for the coveted Mirrorball Trophy. Since the show began, several contestants have passed away, including Florence Henderson, Valerie Harper, Cloris Leachman, and Mary Wilson. Each of these women brought their unique talents to the dance floor, and impressed audiences with their routines.
In 2022, the DWTS cast suffered several terrible and shocking losses, including So You Think You Can Dance alum and judge Stephen "tWitch" Boss, who took his own life at the age of 40. Although he never appeared on DWTS, his wife Allison Holker was a professional dancer on the show, and he had many friends there. He also knew several of the dancers from their time on Sytycd. The Criterion Channel’s February Lineup Includes Melvin Van Peebles, Douglas Sirk, Laura Dern & More
Another month, another Criterion Channel lineup. In accordance with Black History Month their selections are especially refreshing: seven by Melvin Van Peebles, five from Kevin Jerome Everson, and Criterion editions of The Harder They Come and The Learning Tree.
Regarding individual features I’m quite happy to see Abderrahmane Sissako’s fantastic Bamako, last year’s big Sundance winner (and Kosovo’s Oscar entry) Hive, and the remarkably beautiful Portuguese feature The Metamorphosis of Birds. Add a three-film Laura Dern collection (including the recently canonized Smooth Talk) and Pasolini’s rarely shown documentary Love Meetings to make this a fine smorgasboard.
See the full list of February titles below and more on the Criterion Channel.
Alan & Naomi, Sterling Van Wagenen, 1992
All That Heaven Allows, Douglas Sirk, 1955
The Angel Levine, Ján Kadár, 1970

Star Wars prequels vs. sequels, how to work while traveling, the pushmi-pullyu, plus more in today's Link Tank!
Are the Star Wars prequels better than the sequels? Our friend over at The Mary Sue seems to think so.
"The verdict on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is in, and like the trilogy itself, the reactions have been mixed and all over the place. Critics rated the first two movies of the sequel trilogy highly, but many were less impressed by The Rise of Skywalker. Viewers’ mileage may vary, of course, with many finding it a satisfying end to the trilogy and its characters. Surprisingly, viewers’ ratings for the sequels are overall far higher than those that were given to the prequels, at least on Rotten Tomatoes, but that sentiment deserves a second look."

Thanks to “Persepolis,” “Waltz with Bashir” and “Chicago 10,” the blending of animation with documentaries has become a successful sub-genre. This year, it’s pushed further both thematically and stylistically with great impact.
In “Life, Animated,” the autistic Owen Suskind learned to communicate by watching classic Disney animation; in “Floyd Norman: An Animated Life,” Disney’s first African-American animator gets long overdue recognition; and in “Tower,” the use of rotoscope animation helps recreate a 50-year-old mass shooting at the University of Texas Tower.

The filmmakers behind the new documentary “Floyd Norman: An Animated Life” credit a chance encounter with Disney’s first African-American animator for sparking the project. “I met Floyd at San Diego Comic-Con, which as you can see is like this Woodstock for nerds,” co-director Erik Sharkey told TheWrap’s Sharon Waxman at a Q&A Tuesday as part of TheWrap Screening Series. “I was there promoting a documentary about a poster artist named Drew Struzan, who did a lot of the ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Indiana Jones’ posters. He actually did this poster right here for our film.” Sharkey and his co-director,...

But it sounds like pretty much the biggest no-brainer ever that Floyd Norman: An Animated Life won Best Documentary there this year. Anyone who was a kid in the 20th century knows Norman’s work, whether they know it or not: he was an animator and/or a story creator on so many cool things that you won’t believe one man could have spread himself around so much. A wonderful trailer has been released for an upcoming documentary that revolves around Disney animator Floyd Norman. The doc is called Floyd Norman: An Animated Life, and it offers viewers an intimate journey through the life and career of Norman, who is described as the Forrest Gump of the animation industry and is a Disney legend.
The doc comes from filmmakers Michael Fiore and Erik Sharkey, and it seems to be one of those feel good documentaries. If you have any interest in animation and want a candid, behind the scenes look at what the animation industry is like, then this seems like a doc that you’ll want to check out.
Hired as the first African-American at Disney in 1956, Floyd worked on such classics as Sleeping Beauty and 101 Dalmatians, to name a few. In 1967, he was hand-picked by Walt Disney to join the story team on The Jungle Book.

Drew Struzan’s art has given us the iconic posters for Back to the Future, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, The Muppet Movie, and so many other beloved films. He also recently did some pro-bono poster artwork for the documentary Batkid Begins, and now his art is on the poster for another documentary, Floyd Norman: An Animated Life, about the Disney animator, the first African-American artist to work at the studio long-term. Earlier this week, news broke of the next opportunity you’ll have to see Floyd Norman: It will screen at Geena Davis’ Bentonville Film Festival, in Bentonville, Ar next month. The festival created by the Thelma & Louise actress champions women and diverse voices in media. But if you don’t live in Arkansas, you can hope to see the feature-length doc in a few months. Trailer for 'Floyd Norman - An Animated Life' - Feature Doc on 1st Black Animator to Work for Disney
Two years ago, I wrote a piece about Floyd Norman - the first black animator to work for Walt Disney. Now there's a feature documentary on his life in the works titled "Floyd Norman - An Animated Life," from filmmaker Michael Fiore and Erik Sharkey. Born in 1935 in Santa Barbara, his love of animation first came when his mother took him to see Disney’s "Bambi" and "Dumbo." By the time he was a high schooler, Norman knew his goal was to be an animator at Disney studios. After graduation, the brief version of his story goes like this... With the help of a friend Norman got an appointment at Disney and he walked...

Opening with archival footage of Drew Struzan painting the original poster for Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace, Drew: The Man Behind the Poster, tells the life-story of an artist that as iconic to my generation as the films themselves. An artist whose work actually graced more films that I imagined and an artist whose work has inspired a new generation of illustrators, even though the poster medium as Drew knew it, is dead.
Starting at the very beginning, Drew: The Man Behind the Poster tells the story of how Struzan who grew up with a family who didn’t love him, his struggles at art school and his early “poor starving artist” years in which he tried to develop his art and support his family.

Fox, Thomas Jane, Sam Witwer, Frank Darabont, Guillermo del Toro, and many other artists, critics and filmmakers, this film spans the journey of Drew's early life and career in album cover art through his success as one of the most recognizable and influential movie poster artists of all time, to his most recent 'post retirement' life and...

Even as a new wave of movie poster artists (most notably not hired by Photoshop-happy studios) emerges, there is still one name that towers over all of them. That name is Drew. The man who was so poor growing up that he “drew on toilet paper with pencils” is now widely heralded as the greatest movie poster illustrator of all time, and now Drew Struzan is getting an unrepentantly celebratory documentary made about his work. Drew: The Man Behind The Poster looks like pure joy — a feature-length love fest for an artist that most certainly deserves it. As such, director Erik Sharkey and his team have organized one hell of a party steering committee. Steven Spielberg, Guillermo del Toro, George Lucas, Harrison Ford, Michael J. Fox, Frank Darabont, and many more all turn out to praise the man responsible for making you want to see a movie before you know anything else about it. It...

Sharkey Shines A Light On Struzen, Misses The Mark
There’s no doubt you’ve seen and at least admired the work of Drew Struzen. His meticulously painted film posters for Steven Spielberg alone have become iconic images of pop culture royalty, but the list doesn’t start or end there. It’s honestly a bit mind boggling when listed together – Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, The Shawshank Redemption, Harry Potter, The Muppets, you name it, he probably made the jaw dropping one sheet. Painting in broad, geometric strokes, director Erik Sharkey has worked together Drew: The Man Behind the Poster, a portrait of the artist that rains deservingly unanimous praise from the likes of George Lucas, Harrison Ford, Michael J. Fox, Guillermo del Toro and Spielberg himself, but it’s possible that Struzen’s success doesn’t justify a feature length celebration that utterly fails to...

Despite its title, Drew: The Man Behind the Poster is not a documentary about movie poster artist Drew Struzan. Instead, Struzan's poster art is the film's real subject. Director Erik Sharkey uses testimonials from celebrities like Steven Spielberg and Michael J. Fox to lavish praise on Struzan's output. But these famous fans gush only generally about Struzan's iconic movie posters, including Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, The Thing, and all of the Star Wars films—they never explain just what about the man's work they find so resonant. Sharkey doesn't, either. Struzan's illustrations are, in fact, great because they have an aura of mystery about them. Actor Thomas Jane accidentally puts his finger on it when he describes Struzan's artwork...

There's a new documentary that centers on legendary poster artist Drew Struzan called Drew: The Man Behind The Poster, and it's headed to San Diego Comic-Con! The movie is set to premiere at the annual geek gathering of awesomeness.
The screening will be held at San Diego’s Gaslamp 15 on July 19th. After that it is set to open in NYC on August 16th along with a few other markets, followed by a VOD release in the fall.
Struzan is responsible for creating the iconic posters for classic films such as Indiana Jones, Back To The Future, Star Wars, Blade Runner, The Goonies, First Blood, The Thing, The Muppet Movie, the Police Academy series, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Hellboy, and more. The artist announced his retirement back in 2008, but since then a few people have gotten him to do a couple things, like a poster for Jon Favreau's Cowboys and Aliens.

Okay, before our comments section explodes with nerds saying this is old, dudes, we know. We slept on it first time around, but now that the documentary "Drew: The Man Behind The Poster" has come off the festival circuit and has U.S. distribution from Kino Lorber, it's a good time to catch up. So which Drew are we talking about? Well, Drew Struzan. He's the artist behind the posters for pretty much every iconic movie you watched growing up, including each of the key trilogies, "Indiana Jones," "Back to the Future" and "Star Wars." His artwork is treasured and beloved, and he's grown a devoted following of fans and admirers both inside and outside the industry, including Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Frank Darabont, Guillermo Del Toro and Michael J. Fox who are all interviewed in this doc directed by Erik Sharkey. Basically, if you're a fan of any of...

"A personal look at the most important illustrator of the last 100 years." Well I'm sold on the tagline alone, but the poster that it comes from is quite odd, to say the least. An official poster has debuted on Beyond the Marquee (via IMPAwards) for the documentary Drew: The Man Behind the Poster, about legendary poster artist Drew Struzan. The poster is not Struzan art, but instead is a photo of Struzan focused on his eye, with a corner turned out. I like the concept they're going for, but something just seems awkward, maybe I'm just thinking of seeing Struzan's style so much. That said, I am very excited to watch this documentary. This poster "created by Xl Brand Laboratories and photographed by Frank W.Ockenfels 3." Your thoughts? Drew: The Man Behind the Poster is directed by up-and-coming American filmmaker Erik Sharkey, of a few shorts previously. Sharkey along with...

A couple of months ago we reported that the Drew Struzan documentary, Drew: The Man Behind The Poster, needed some funds to help finish post production. Thanks to your efforts, director Erik P. Sharkey has finished the film, and even held a panel this past weekend at Comic-Con. Now we have a brand new trailer for the doc that is finally on its way to release.
If you grew up in the 80s or 90s, or own any blu-ray or DVD worth owning, you know Struzan's work. His ability to make a new movie feel instantly nostalgic is what made him the go-to-guy for Hollywood. Too bad we're living in an age quickly being taken over by bad photoshop.
In this new trailer, we get even more insight into the techniques Struzan uses to bring those qualities to the canvas, and his impact on cinema. The doc includes interviews with George Lucas,...

You may not know his name but if you grew up in the 80s and 90s or are a fan of movie posters you know the work of Drew Struzan and a new documentary entitled Drew: The Man Behind the Poster aims to spread the good word on this artist.
His artwork has become synonymous with some of the most enduring classics of popular cinema and as you’ll see from the new trailer, released a few days ago at Comic-Con, actors and filmmakers are happy to push this artist to the spotlight.
Certainly his illustrations are among the most iconic pieces of movie marketing and this new documentary aims to reveal the man as well as offer us the opportunity to see him at work. Way back in August of 2010, we called your attention to a documentary called Drew: The Man Behind the Poster which is about the legendary Drew Struzan, the iconic poster artist we all know and love. Erik Sharkey along with Greg Boas and Charles Ricciardi are the filmmaking team behind the doc that features interviews with Guillermo del Toro, Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford, and so many more. This past May the production was looking for money on Kickstarter to help with post-production costs, and that goal was met. Then last week at Comic-Con a new trailer was unveiled, which you can watch below! “It’s not just an ad; it’s the first notes of the piece. It’s the beginning of the story.” That’s Michael J. Fox speaking about Drew Struzan‘s work and giving movie marketers everywhere a much-needed lesson. It’s not about slapping some poorly Photoshopped celebrity faces against a white space with a bad font; it’s about creating an indelible image that instantly makes someone want to see the movie. It’s imagery selling imagery. Now, the legendary artist is now the subject of a documentary from director Erik Sharkey, and that documentary has a trailer. Drew: The Man Behind the Poster features interviews with Guillermo Del Toro, Fox, Frank Darabont, Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Tom Jane, and a bunch of other artists (including Stuzan himself). We've got a Fringe screening and Q&A, Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer 20th Anniversary, Sons of Anarchy, the annual Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical screening, and more! I've always wanted to go the Buffy musical sing-a-long, but am usually trying to leave San Diego before it starts.

For those of you that love the art of movie posters like I do, here's a documentary that looks like a must see film! The film is about illustrator Drew Struzan, who created some of the greatest and most iconic movie posters ever created. The posters this man created are forever burned into our memory, especially if you grew up in the 1980’s or 90’s. I own several of the movie posters that Struzan created in his career. Some of his most popular works include Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, The Goonies and Star Wars.
The documentary includes exclusive interviews with George Lucas, Harrison Ford, Michael J. Fox, Frank Darabont, Guillermo del Toro, Steven Spielberg and many other filmmakers, artists and critics.
The journey spans Drew's early career in commercial and album cover art through his recent retirement as one of the most recognizable and influential movie poster artists of all time.
