Texas Rep. Sylvester Turner (D) has died at 70, just hours after he attended President Donald Trump‘s address to a joint session of Congress. The news of Turner’s death, which occurred on Wednesday, was announced in a statement from his office made on the same day. No cause of death was revealed, though in 2022, he stated that he was treated for bone cancer. He told the Texas Tribune in an interview later that year he was “cancer-free.”
“Throughout his career, he was known for his bipartisan leadership, dedication to his constituents, and unwavering commitment to improving the lives of all Houstonians,” the office wrote in the statement. “Congressman Turner is survived by his loving family, devoted staff and numerous friends who cherished his wisdom, humor, and steadfast dedication to public service. Stevie Wonder advocated for love (and mentioned the Vice President) while speaking at Duke Fakir’s funeral service. During Friday’s final farewell for the Four Tops star, Wonder performed two gospel songs and gave a shout-out to Kamala Harris.
After singing “The Lord’s Prayer” and sharing a quick “Amen” with the Hartford Memorial Baptist Church crowd, Wonder simply said the presumptive Democratic nominee’s name, “Kamala Harris.” He then paused as the crowd continued its applause and repeated: “Kamala Harris. There, I said it.”

The recording was leaked to ABC 13 on Tuesday and was reported to be from “at least half a decade ago.” According to the outlet, Jackson Lee uses 17 curse words in the under-two-minute conversation.
“To anyone who has listened to this recording with concern, I am regretful and hope you will judge me not by something trotted out by a political opponent, that worked hard to exploit this, and backed by extreme Republican supporters on the very day polls open but from what I’ve delivered to Houstonians over my years of public service,” said Jackson Lee in a statement.

“The Daily Show” correspondent Desi Lydic roasted Republicans’ inability to choose a new Republican Speaker of the House, saying the party should just “settle” on an option just like women often have to do when it comes to picking a suitor.
This week’s guest host was TV personality Desus Nice (“Desus & Mero”) who served up show’s weekly “Headlines” of the week. Some of the topics included Taylor Swift’s celebratory handshake with Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ wife, Brittany, the nation’s tough health care system and Sheila Jackson Lee’s explosive phone call with her staff.
The last bit of the segment was delivered by Lydic, who was live from a fictional Capitol Hill, where she reported on Republicans’ search for a new speaker.

Democrats in Congress are taking aim at the pending $43 billion merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery, pushing the Justice Department to scrutinize the transaction on antitrust grounds.
In a letter sent Monday to Attorney General Merrick Garland and Justice Department antitrust chief Jonathan Kanter, the legislators assert that too much consolidation in media will hurt competition in Hollywood’s labor market and result in less diversity overall in content.
“This transaction raises significant antitrust concerns. In particular, the merger threatens to enhance the market power of the combined firm and substantially lessen competition in the media and entertainment industry, harming both consumers and American workers,” the letter states. “In light of these concerns, we respectfully urge the Department to conduct a thorough review of this transaction to ensure that it does not harm American consumers and workers by illegally harming competition.”

Congressman John Lewis is one the central figures in the early struggles of the American Civil Rights Movement that included bloody confrontations with white policemen, sit-ins, boycotts, widespread lynching of Black people, assassinations of prominent leaders, and culminating with marches in Selma, Al, and Washington, D.C. Lewis is now the subject of John Lewis: Good Trouble, a comprehensive new documentary directed by Dawn Porter.
John Lewis: Good Trouble is an alternately impressive, shocking, enraging, and motivating film that calls on everyone to do better in life. John Lewis is a legend, an icon, and an American pioneer. President Donald Trump will likely be only the third president in U.S. history to face an impeachment vote on the floor of the House, after the Judiciary Committee on Friday approved articles that charge him with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The House Judiciary Committee voted along party lines, 23-17, on each of the two articles. The approval clears the way for a full House vote, expected next week. Broadcast networks broke into regular programming to cover the vote, along with cable news networks. As a clerk read through each name, members announced their “yea” or “nay” in serious and almost subdued tones, the only moment of levity coming when Louie Gohmert (R-TX) asked to make sure that his vote was recorded as a “No.” Afterward, Republicans gathered in the entrance lobby of the Longworth Office Building on Capitol Hill and, one by one, told...

Updated with Anderson Cooper remarks: A Coast Guard officer stationed in Washington, D.C., stands accused of plotting a mass terrorist attack whose intended victims include prominent journalists at MSNBC and CNN and Democratic politicians.
For now, the suspect is being held only on weapons and drug charges, but at the very top of their detention memo filied today with the U.S. District Court in Maryland, prosecutors wrote: “The defendant intends to murder innocent civilians on a scale rarely seen in this country.”
Lt. Christopher Hasson, 49, was arrested last week at his home in Silver Spring, MD. The court documents say authorites found a hit list on his computer that named prominent media personalities including CNN’s Don Lemon, Chris Cuomo and Van Jones and MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough, Chris Hayes and Ari Melber.

Matthew Whitaker, whom President Trump named acting attorney general of the United States in November, testified before the House Judiciary Committee on Friday. It wasn’t easy to get him there. Sensing resistance he may not cooperate, committee chair Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-ny) on Tuesday announced he was prepared to draft a subpoena to force Whitaker to testify so the committee could better understand how he came to sit atop the Justice Department, why he refused to recuse himself from overseeing the Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation despite ethics officials...

President Donald Trump faced immediate backlash after he criticized hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico and warned the U.S. territory that federal aid workers cannot stay there “forever.”
In a series of tweets on Thursday morning, Trump quoted conservative television journalist Sharyl Attkisson as he blamed the island for a financial crisis “largely of their own making” and infrastructure that was a “disaster” before Hurricane Maria struck on Sept. 20.
“We cannot keep Fema, the Military & the First Responders, who have been amazing (under the most difficult circumstances) in P.R. forever!” the president said.

Texas Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) took a knee on the House floor Monday night “in honor of the First Amendment” and in solidarity with the NFL players who kneel during the National Anthem in protest of racial inequality in the United States. “There is no basis in the First Amendment that says that you cannot kneel on the national anthem or in front of the flag,” she said. “That is racism. You cannot deny it, you cannot run for it.” Jackson Lee said she refuses to accept Trump’s comments at a rally in Alabama on Friday in which he called.

On Wednesday, a hearing on Capitol Hill exploded as Rep. Darrell Issa (R-ca) accused Attorney General Eric Holder’s Department of Justice of dropping a case against the city of St. Paul, Mn, in 2011 in exchange the city dropping a civil rights case that was bound for the Supreme Court. Rep. Holder and Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-tx) blew up over the charge and went after Issa for both his methods and his manner of questioning. Holder attacked Issa after he was accused of intentionally withholding information.

Well if you hadn't really heard of Homeland prior to this weekend, you probably have by now. The Showtime series pulled off a major upset at the 64th Annual Emmy Awards last night, winning a large chunk of the major awards in the Drama category over favourites like Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones. Claire Danes and Damian Lewis both took home awards for Lead Actress and Actor in a Drama Series, while the show also broke Mad Men's four-year win streak for Outstanding Drama Series. Elsewhere, Aaron Paul won his second Emmy for his supporting performance as Jesse Pinkman on Breaking Bad, while Julia Louis-Dreyfus won Best Lead Actress in a Comedy for Veep. Modern Family still took the Outstanding Comedy Series, however, while the HBO movie Game Change took the Outstanding Mini-Series or TV Movie. Kevin Costner did manage to pick up some...

MSNBC anchor Thomas Roberts spoke with Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-tx) on Tuesday morning where they discussed the expected enthusiasm of Democratic voters in 2012 as compared with 2008. They also touched on the issue of voter identification laws, which some have charged are aimed at disentrancing minority voters. Roberts opted to casually frame a question on voter identification as the Republican party advancing the institution of a “poll tax.” If the Republican party is doing so, that would be a crime – a high charge for a journalist to make. Fortunately for the Gop, they are guilty of no such thing.

Action on the Stop Online Piracy Act moved right along today in the House Judiciary Committee where one modification after another was defeated by lopsided votes — until a notoriously prickly Texas Democrat didn’t take kindly to remarks by a Republican. The remarks in question came from Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), who tweeted that: “We are debating the Stop Online Piracy Act and Shiela Jackson [sic] has so bored me that I’m killing time by surfing the Internet.” The target of his disdain was Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, who’s so notoriously contrary that the Washingtonian magazine has dubbed her the “meanest” member of Congress. Jackson Lee objected. And the hearing ground to a S.T.O.P. It was unacceptable “to have a member of the Judiciary committee be so offensive,” Jackson Lee said. But King was not on the premises by the time she became aware of his tweet.

The 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards are being held in the early hours of tomorrow morning, and so in the run-up to the ceremony, we thought we’d give you a run-down of this year’s nominees.
For those able to watch the show (which is also being shown on Five USA tomorrow night at 10), you can look forward to your host for the evening being Jane Lynch, best known for her role as Sue Sylvester in Glee.
And for those unacquainted with the awards, you can pretty much think of them as the television equivalent to the Oscars, with the Primetime Emmy Awards recognising the best talent in primetime television.
A few of the awards were already presented to the winners at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards last weekend, so I’ll do a summary of those categories first, followed by the nominees for tonight’s awards ceremony. There are...
