Television can be cut-throat, even for a genre as popular as superhero shows. If a series doesn't connect with critics and audiences or fails to pull in big enough ratings to justify its cost, networks can and will cancel it, regardless of its quality or potential.

On the other side of the coin, shows with large audiences can feel bulletproof. Many shows last long after critics or even their audiences have grown tired of them. As long as a series continues to pull in dedicated fans every week, a show can stagger forward, even as its quality gradually declines.

Strong concepts and captivating performances aren't always enough to ensure a lasting place in the public's memory. Shows like Preacher, Life Unexpected, and Workaholics were highly praised during their airing but faded from public conversations over time.

Sometimes, great television shows from years ago fall under the radar, leading the general public to forget about their existence. Yet, it's not always the content of the show that makes audiences forget. Oftentimes with these shows, the characters and material are spoken highly of by critics and the shows' devoted fan bases, but are forgotten due to outside factors. Orion Pictures and Samuel Goldwyn Films have secured North American rights to first-time filmmaker Anthony Onah’s drama The Price.

The story centres on a young Nigerian-American working on Wall Street who is forced to confront himself after his ambition leads him into morally dubious waters.

Aml Ameen, Lucy Griffiths, Bill Sage and Hope Olaide Wilson star alongside Michael Hyatt, Peter Vack, and Souléymane Sy Savané.

Onah also wrote the screenplay for The Price based on his short film Dara Ju. The film premiered in competition SXSW earlier this year.

Justin Begnaud, Kishori Rajan and Onah produced the film, while Tom Dolby, Susanne Filkins, Abdi Nazemian and Lynda Weinman served as executive producers.

The movies are becoming an increasingly vital source for stories about black life in America, but a film like “Dara Ju” is a valuable reminder that the medium is still just beginning to scratch the surface. Of course, white audiences, whom the western arts have conditioned to perceive race in largely monolithic terms, are the only ones who need reminding; the rest require only fair representation. Despite its clumsiness and its steadily increasing penchant for clichés, Anthony Onah’s debut feature has something to offer for both demographics. By respecting the specificity of a character who has seldom appeared on screen, its best moments provide a compellingly lucid testament to the idea that living in this country is a never-ending negotiation between who you are and who you might become. Some Americans have the luxury of ignoring that, of going through the motions on auto-pilot. Seyi Ogunde (Aml Ameen) is not one of those Americans.

After drawing attention to the festival’s annual Gaming Awards, organizers behind the South by Southwest Film Festival have posted the full, comprehensive lineup, revealing that the likes of Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver and Free Fire, the riotous ensemble thriller from Ben Wheatley, are among those films that will screen for critics and attendees.

A Bad Idea Gone Wrong...

I may have been one of the few to like the 2005 film version of DC Comics’ John Constantine. Yes, it had Keanu and yes it was in Los Angeles, not London, but it was an old fashioned horror film and worked better than it should have.

As a result, I was primed to enjoy NBC”s take on Constantine when it debuted in 2014. It had the right pedigree with David S. Goyer and Mark Verheiden among the producers and cast an act Brit, Matt Ryan, in the lead. What resulted, though, was something interesting and uneven that didn’t catch on with the general audience and was gone after thirteen all-too-brief episodes.

Preacher is one of my favorite series currently running on TV and it's going to be released on Blu-ray and DVD October 4.

The first season takes a while to get going, mostly because of character development but it really gets going. Lots of gore and is damned hilarious in spots. Very interesting characters as well. Can't wait for season 2. Read more about the upcoming release below.

Rejoice in the glory of Christ/Satan/[Insert Deity Here], Preacher fans: AMC has renewed the popular supernatural horror series for an expanded 13-episode second season (as opposed to Season 1's 10-episode order). Based on the cult comic book series by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, Preacher centers on a faith-challenged Texas preacher named Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper) who is imbued with the power to make other people do anything he commands when he's possessed by the spirit of a mysterious entity named Genesis.  Season 1 has brought in solid ratings for the network with an average of 3.3 million viewers an episode, including 1.9 million in the highly-coveted Adults 25-54 demo (according to AMC, this makes it the second most-watched new series on cable this year). This Thursday, the network is airing a "catch-up/DVR marathon" of the first five episodes of Season 1 beginning at 9pm, with the sixth episode slated to air in the show's regular Sunday 9pm timeslot.

We may just be in the Golden Age of television, ladies and gentlemen. I know people have said that for years, but as someone who mostly sticks to film and only occasionally goes in on a TV show, it takes a lot for me to notice things on the small screen. Yesterday, AMC took to the popular mobile app Snapchat to release the first five minutes of the highly anticipated Preacher pilot episode in advance of the Sunday, May 22 launch. AMC has released the first four and a half minutes of their upcoming new series Preacher, which is based on the comic book by writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon. This clip gives you an idea of how insane this series is going to be and shows you that they are not going hold back on this thing.

The show comes to us from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who seem to have done an awesome job bringing this story to life for television. I've already seen the full first episode and it was wicked fun.

Even though we’ve had quite a few teasers and promos for AMC’s adaptation of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s controversial comic series, Preacher, none of them have really given us any proper insight into the story, or what we can expect from the characters. Well, that all changes today with this revealing 5-minute featurette.

In addition to interviews with showrunners Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, and cast members Dominic Cooper (Jesse Custer), Joseph Gilgun (Cassidy) and Ruth Negga (Tulip O’Hare), we also get to see the characters interact and actually converse for the first time.
