With more than six months left until The Maze Runner sequel The Scorch Trials hits theaters, 20th Century Fox is putting the follow-up The Death Cure into development. The studio has hired T.S. Nowlin to write the screenplay adaptation based on James Dashner's third chapter in The Maze Runner novel series. T.S. Nowlin co-wrote last year's The Maze Runner with Noah Oppenheim and Grant Pierce Myers, and he has sole writing credit on this year's sequel The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials.
What remains unclear at this point is if 20th Century Fox will also develop James Dashner's fourth novel in the series, a prequel entitled The Killing Order, which is set 13 years before the events of the original book. It also isn't known if Wes Ball, who made his directorial debut with The Maze Runner and returned to helm The Scorch Trials sequel, will be back to direct.

The migration of young adult dystopias from bookshelf to silver screen has been a mixed bag, some being incredibly faithful, some less so. However, we have reached a point where these depressing, unrealistic worlds have saturated the screen category to the point where they seem cut from the same pattern. Now, I admit, far too many films adhere to the predictable three act structure but in this sub-genre, the seams are far more obvious with a lot less variety. As a result, it befalls to the producer and director to find a way to be interesting.
This fall we welcomed the latest contestant in this competition and The Maze Runner, based on the novel trilogy by James Dashner, wins points for atmosphere. After that, it is stunningly dull. With the Hunger Games franchise inching towards its close – albeit with the final book needlessly split into two films for sadly commercial reasons – the Young Adult movie throne will soon be vacant. Divergent had a so-so stab at the title earlier this year, with Shailene Woodley's charisma improving the sketchily explained narrative and sequels on the way.
But while the Veronica Roth adaptation was certain a cut above tried-and-failed Ya novel adaptations like Beautiful Creatures or The Mortal Instruments, it isn't the undisputed champion of the teen audience arena, just yet.
So could The Maze Runner become the 'next Twilight/Hunger Games/massive cash cow'? Well, it's a maybe.
In this dystopian (well, of course) tale, sixteen-year-old boy Thomas (Dylan O'Brien) awakes in an elevator, which rises into a grass clearing – surrounded by ominous towering walls. He's got no memory of whom he is or why he might have...

In this day and age we, as a society, have become obsessed with the idea of a post-apocalyptic life. This has created an enormous output of post-apocalyptic young adult fiction titles. From I Am Legend to The Road, and from World War Z to The Hunger Games, these fiction titles have been transposed to film for the good of both movie fans and producers alike. The latest installment in this craze is The Maze Runner. The novel by James Dashner, on which the film is based, is the first book in a trilogy about a group of boys that live inside of a maze. Too vague?
The Maze Runner centers around Thomas (Dylan O’Brien), a young man without any memory, except for his name. He is thrown into the middle of “The Glade,” a society of only boys that exists in the center of a maze. Day in and day out,...

The rules of engagement have changed in the ongoing push-me/pull-you of tentpole filmmaking, especially when aiming at the oh-so-important young adult demographic. That is a very business-minded opening sentence for a review, but these days, when you're making a film like "The Maze Runner," it is a very business-minded endeavor. If you get one of these movies right, you buy yourself the room to make two or three or however many more. Casting is a huge part of that, as is the way you bait the hook for the larger franchise. Wes Ball's background is in animation and effects, and he certainly has an eye for composition. Thankfully, he doesn't just lean on visual flash in his debut feature, the adaptation of the first of James Dashner's four books, and his skills allow him to build a convincing world around his appealing cast without losing them in it completely.

Based on the first book in James Dashner's popular book series, The Maze Runner aims to inject a shot of adrenaline into the Young Adult genre that's surged in popularity since the Twilight movies. There's no supernatural romance here, however. This is a fairly straight-up, boys' own action movie about survival in an enclosed community called the Glade.
Teen Wolf's Dylan O'Brien leads the cast as Thomas, who gets his memory wiped before being thrust into the group of boys left to fend for themselves in an unknown location. Each day the walls surrounding the Glade open up to reveal a maze and the best athletes in the group - "runners" - enter in a bid to find a way out.

"V for Vendetta" and "Ninja Assassin" director James McTeigue is in negotiations to direct "Ness/Capone" for Relativity Media says Deadline.
Grant Pierce Myers penned the Black List script which puts a new spin on the epic battle between Eliot Ness and Al Capone during the Prohibition Era 1920s. Far less black-and-white than "The Untouchables", this version has Ness as a young skirt-chasing publicity hound who gets off on the danger of the job.
He would parade confiscated bootleg trucks past Al Capone’s hotel, calling Capone in advance to suggest he look out the window. Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell, Gianni Nunnari, Jason Felts and Rene Rigal are producing.
McTeigue just completed the John Cusack-led "The Raven" for Relativity, while he's currently casting his next feature "Message From the King" about an enigmatic outsider who comes to L.A. to investigate the sudden disappearance of his sister.

A problem that a director will often face when taking historical figures and transplanting them to film is dealing with the work that other filmmakers have done with the same people. If they made their mark before, your film will be compared to theirs; this happens all the time, much to the frustration of those working on these projects.
Such is the challenge that James McTeigue will face with Ness/Capone, an upcoming drama that Deadline says he’ll be helming. The point of comparison here is Brian De Palma‘s The Untouchables, which starred Kevin Costner as Eliot Ness and Robert De Niro as Al Capone. Although The Untouchables is not a great film, the image of these two men on opposite sides of the law is, for many, linked to it entirely.
This could stand on its own, though, as it sounds like it’ll take things in a different direction.

* James McTeigue(Ninja Assassin, V For Vendetta) is keeping his relationship with Relativity going strong. After wrapping up his Edgar Allan Poe thriller, The Raven, he'll jump next into directing Ness/Capone, a film which details the early days of the feud between goody two-shoes lawman Eliot Ness and the gangster Al Capone. The 2010 Black List script was written by Grant Pierce Myers. [...

Relativity Media has brought on James McTeigue to direct their gangster drama Ness/Capone. We first reported on this project back in April when Relativity acquired the project.
Grant Pierce Myers wrote the screenplay, which landed on the 2010 Black List, and puts a fresh twist on the war between law enforcer Elliot Ness and Chicago gangster Al Capone in the 1920s. This story portrays Ness as an attention-seeking womanizer who took great joy in taking down the mobster. The story was popularized in the 1987 classic The Untouchables, although this version of Elliot Ness will be vastly different than Kevin Costner's clean-cut take.
Hollywood Gang's Gianni Nunnari is producing Ness/Capone alongside Relativity's Ryan Kavanaugh, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell, Jason Felts, and Rene M. Rigal.
It isn't known when production will start on Ness/Capone yet.
Ness/Capone comes to theaters in 2014. The film is directed by James McTeigue.

James McTeigue is wasting no more time as a first or second unit man. He’s a feature director now, and he’s signing deals left and right. He’s just wrapped on “The Raven,” and is prepping the thriller “Message from the King,” but still had some time to reunite with Relativity Media over all things Untouchable. McTeigue has just signed to direct “Ness / Capone,” a re-telling (but not a remake – this is history!) of the famous Prohibition-era feud between Eliot Ness and Al Capone. “Ness / Capone” will tell a different side of the story than “The Untouchables” did. There’s been more research into Ness and his famous squad over the past few decades, revealing that Ness did more and less than his pop culture legend would have us believe. Ness and Capone’s battle was greatly exaggerated by the press, Ness’ biographer, and by television and film.

Ness/Capone, as you’ve probably guessed, is a film about Eliot Ness’ hunting of famed gangster Al Capone during the Prohibition era of the 1920s. The story of Ness and Capone has been told plenty of times before, perhaps most notably in Brian De Palma’s The Untouchables, but Ness/Capone is said to present its own little twist on the material. The script, written by Grant Pierce Myers, was good enough to make the 2010 Black List of best, unproduced scripts, and it’s said to look at the lives of Ness and Capone with more shades of gray than we’ve seen from the story so far. Rather than Ness being the hero and Capone the villain, Ness/Capone is a more complicated look at the rivals, and it paints Ness as an adrenaline junkie who became addicted to the chase and the infamy that his dealings with Capone brought him. He...

Former Wachowski Brothers protégé James McTeigue (he directed both "V for Vendetta" and the gory-good "Ninja Assassin" for the Brothers and producer Joel Silver) has apparently made the suits at Relativity happy. The director helmed their forthcoming Edgar Allan Poe thriller "The Raven," and according to Deadline, they've just hired him back to take on the high profile historical drama "Ness/Capone." The script, a 2010 Black List entry by first timer Grant Pierce Myers, focuses on the contentious early relationship between the well-known lawman Eliot Ness and infamous gangster Al Capone in Prohibition Era Chicago. The project was acquired by…...

Relativity Media just finished working with V for Vendetta director James McTeigue on the period mystery thriller The Raven with John Cusack as Edgar Allen Poe (a project that didn't really impress me much at Comic-Con earlier this year). Now the production company will reunite with the filmmaker as Deadline reports McTeigue has been set to direct Ness/Capone, a new period crime drama written by Grant Pierce Myers which made the 2010 Black List. The film is said to put a new spin on the well-known rivalry between American Prohibition agent Elliot Ness and infamous mobster Al Capone in the 1920's. Though Ness and his exploits as the leader of agents who came to be known as The Untouchables were chronicled the in the 1987 film of the same name starring Kevin Costner, this film is said to follow the battle between Ness and Capone with more shades of gray. Ness...

The latest in competing movie news is that Warner Bros. isn't the only studio with an Al Capone movie brewing. Relativity Media has Ness/Capone, based on the 2010 Black List script written by Grant Pierce Myers. The studio has just hired James McTeigue to direct it, as the filmmaker recently completed work on Relativity's film The Raven. As implied by the title, the script covers some of the same ground as The Untouchables, with Eliot Ness chasing Capone but also chasing his own interests and a certain flashy sort of power that came from having a mandate to combat one of the country's biggest crime figures. This won't be McTeigue's next movie, as he's putting together [1] Message From the King right now. There is no cast attached to Ness/Capone at this point. So Warner Bros. still has time to really movie forward on Cicero, its Capone movie, and turn...

James McTeigue has found a new directing gig wrapping The Raven with John Cusack. Deadline reports that McTeigue is finalizing a deal to direct Ness/Capone based on a script by Grant Pierce Myers. The story will reportedly put "a new spin on the epic battle between Eliot Ness and Al Capone during the Prohibition Era 1920s." The project was bought by Relativity in April. McTeigue will next direct Message From the King, but he is in talks to take on this film after that. The project is being produced by Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell, Gianni Nunnari, Jason Felts and Rene Rigal.
Ness/Capone "covers the feud in more shades of gray than were evident in The Untouchables. Ness is a skirt-chasing 26-year-old publicity hound who seemed to get an adrenaline charge out of courting danger, kicking in doors, smashing moonshine stores and rubbing it in the noses of Capone and other mobsters.

Exclusive: James McTeigue, who just completed the John Cusack-starrer The Raven for Relativity Media, is getting back in business with Ryan Kavanaugh. I’m told that McTeigue is making a deal to direct Ness/Capone, the Grant Pierce Myers script that made the 2010 Black List and puts a new spin on the epic battle between Eliot Ness and Al Capone during the Prohibition Era 1920s. Relativity acquired it in April. McTeigue is negotiating, even as he is casting his next film, Message From the King, the Oliver Butcher- and Stephen Cornwell-scripted thriller about an enigmatic outsider who comes to L.A. to investigate the sudden disappearance of his sister. That film is being financed by FilmNation Entertainment. Ness/Capone covers the feud in more shades of gray than were evident in The Untouchables. James McTeigue has his sights set on Ness/Capone , the true tale of the famous prohibition-era battle between Eliot Ness, the leader of "The Untouchables" and notorious gangster Al Capone. Deadline has the scoop, claiming that McTeigue will direct the project for Relativity. The script arrives from Grant Pierce Myers after hitting the "Black List" of unproduced screenplays in 2010 and is said to offer a less-than-flattering depiction of Ness' role as a law enforcement agent. McTeigue, originally a second-unit director, made his full directing debut with V for Vendetta in 2006. Since then, he helmed Ninja Assassin in 2009 and will, next year, release his Edgar Allen Poe biopic, The Raven with John Cusack in the lead.
