Feature film outfit Who’s On First will focus on producing mainstream comedies and dramas with transatlantic appeal.

Roughcut TV boss Ash Atalla and his former head of comedy Dan Hine have reunited to establish a comedy feature film company.

Who’s On First, which is backed by People Just Do Nothing indie Roughcut, will focus on producing mainstream comedy movies and comedy dramas with transatlantic appeal. Atalla and Hine plan to champion contemporary ideas which celebrate the humour and painful realities for living in a 21st century interconnected world.

Created by Jack Thorne (whose previous writing credits include Skins, This Is England and Shameless), this six-part supernatual horror series which originally aired in the UK on BBC3 last year, has now arrived on BBC America. Perhaps half-inspired by the success of E4′s superhero drama Misfits, The Fades marks BBC3′s next foray into the subgenre of the youth-skewed horror-fantasy. The Fades may just very well be one of the most promising new series of 2011, in the sense that it has the potential to really make waves if given a second series. The series manages to kick plenty of ass by breathing some much needed fresh air into the over-saturated genre; will that be enough for the series to sign for another year, or will The Fades simply fade away as the next “one-season wonder”?

Chicago – “My only friend is either a lunatic or Heather Langenkamp.” It’s clever lines like that keep BBC’s “The Fades” from becoming yet-another teen supernatural drama (the Brit’s “The Vampire Diaries,” if you will) along with a relative consistency of tone and with some strong performances. There’s still something about “The Fades” that holds it back from the best that BBC America has to offer — “Being Human,” “Doctor Who,” early “Primeval,” the now-gone “Torchwood” — but it’s worth a look, especially for those of you know who Heather Langenkamp is.

The network has announced that it will be co-producing a new show titled The Fades written by Jack Thorne (This is England ’86, Skins.) This fantasy horror series centers on Paul, a “reluctant teenage hero” who sees the dead aka The Fades.

The Fades stars Iain De Caestecker (Lip Service, Coronation Street) and two Skins actors Lily Loveless and Daniel Kaluuya. Filming has begun in the UK. Check out the full press release below:

I live within a stone's throw of a pretty cool-looking disused railway tunnel in London's Highgate, a location which, on average, receives a new film crew about every 4-5 months. The South by Southwest Film Festival announced its feature film line-up Wednesday, piling heaps of cinematic goodness on an already stellar program that includes Jodie Foster’s The Beaver, Duncan Jones’ Source Code, Ti West’s The Innkeepers, Conan O’Brien’s tour documentary, and the latest Simon Pegg-Nick Frost comedy, Paul, with Seth Rogen.

Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) returns to the festival with her latest film, Red Riding Hood starring Amanda Seyfried, after the writer-director spoke on a screenwriting panel in 2009.

‘Tapping into the cultural zeitgeist,’ at SXSW 2011

Austin, Texas – The SXSW 2011 Feature Film Lineup was unveiled Wednesday afternoon. The festival lineup will consist of 130 features, in nine full days of programming, promising to deliver a film-going experience unlike previous years.

With a reputation for taking chances on relatively unknown filmmakers, the SXSW panel of judges carefully picked 130 films from 1,792 feature-length film submissions, (1,323 U.S. and 469 international). The program consists of 60 World Premieres, 12 North American Premieres and 16 U.S. Premieres.

The main competition categories return with eight Narrative Features, and eight Documentary Features, both competing for their respective Grand Jury Prize. New for films in competition this year, are awards for screenplay, editing, cinematography, music, and acting.

There are a total of 130 features screening this year including 60 world premieres, 12 North American premieres and 16 U.S. premieres! This year the a total of 1,792 feature-length films were submitted, which is the most ever.

There are going to be some amazing films shown this yea. Opening night kicks off with Duncan Jones' Source Code (Moon). The fest rolls on with Jodie Foster‘s The Beaver, Greg Mottola‘s Paul, Sundance Grand Prize doc winner How to Die in Oregon, Errol Morris‘ Tabloid, Victoria Mahoney‘s Yelling to the Sky, Azazel Jacob‘s Terri. There will also be a special screening of Catherine Hardwicke‘s Red Riding Hood.

The Midnight and SXFantastic sections will be announced with the shorts program next week.

The South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW) just announced their entire 2011 feature film lineup, and there’s isn’t a lot of note, with regards to this blog’s focus.

Titles you should be aware of – all of which we’ve previously profiled on Shadow And Act – include, Victoria Mahoney’s feature film debut, Yelling To The Sky (which will actually make its world debut at the Berlin Film Festival later this month); plus Blacktino, the first feature film from writer/director Aaron Burns, a self-described “blacktino nerd from Austin, Texas,” who got his start at Robert Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios doing visual effects; Benda Bilili, a documentary about a band of homeless, disabled Congolese; and last, but not least, Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey, a documentary about the black man that happens to be the man behind the puppet (which also played at Sundance).

Clark Duke speaks about a potential Kick-Ass sequelHot Tub Time Machine will go back in time on DVD and Blu-ray on June 29 and some of the film's stars appeared at a lavish party at the legendary Playboy mansion in Los Angeles to celebrate this new home video release. One of the stars in appearance was Clark Duke, who is already having a great year in 2010 with that comedy and also starring in Matthew Vaughn's comic book adaptation Kick-Ass. There has been talk of a sequel to the film and Duke revealed that it might be awhile until we see a follow-up film.

"Yeah, there's been talk about it," Duke told us. "I've seen the script for the sequel comic and it's pretty fun. I feel that if there is a movie sequel, it will be a little while off, with Matthew doing X-Men: First Class right now."
