Exclusive: Aaron Holliday (Cocaine Bear), Jermaine Fowler (Sorry to Bother You), Michael Abbott Jr. (Fallout) and Sean Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) have wrapped on Appofeniacs, an indie horror film from writer-director Chris Marrs Piliero.
Appofeniacs is a riff on the term “apophenia” which is the tendency to find connections or patterns in things that are unrelated or random — common examples being confirmation bias and paranoia. This marks the feature debut for Piliero, who is known for his music video work with Ariana Grande, Britney Spears, Avril Lavigne, Kesha, and The Black Keys (for which he won an MTV VMA).
Piliero independently financed and produced the film, which also stars Will Brandt, Paige Searcy, Simran Jehani, Harley Bronwyn, and Sean Wing. Gunn exec produced the pic, with Salvatore Schiavone and Jonathan Voluck handling casting.
Previously seen in Universal’s horror comedy Cocaine Bear, Holliday has also been seen on HBO’s Euphoria and Sharp Objects.

The biggest night in music is finally here! Tonight, the top names in music gathered for the 67th Grammy Awards.
The competition is stiff this year, with Beyoncé leading all nominees with 11, thanks to Cowboy Carter. She scored nods in not only the three major categories — Song, Record, and Album of the Year — but four different genre categories: Country, Pop, Rap, and Americana. Her 11 nominations also made her the most nominated artist in Grammy history with 99 (she previously shared the record, 88, with her husband, Jay-Z).

Give your favorite music fan a box set for the holidays this year? You had a ton to choose from. Last year, record labels released enough shelf-straining packages of CDs or vinyl to fill a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame exhibit, with sets highlighting the works of David Bowie, Bob Dylan, the Beatles, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Elvis Costello, and more. And that’s in addition to the copious amounts of jazz sets regularly released, like 2024’s six-cd/eight-lp behemoth Miles in France, the latest volume of the Miles Davis Bootleg Series.

Even during their early 2010s commercial peak, when outside producers, pop-funk influences, and expanded instrumentation transformed them into a genuine mainstream act, the Black Keys’s songs were still full of empty space. Listening to “Tighten Up” or “Lonely Boy” today, it’s striking how spare they sound. They’re slick but not overproduced. There’s not a single extraneous element, enabling the hooks to hammer home with maximum efficiency and giving the songs’ indelible grooves plenty of room to breathe.
The same can’t be said for the band’s 12th studio album, Ohio Players, which is so overstuffed with guest musicians that Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney are often swallowed whole. For the most part, this isn’t an issue of principle so much as practical listenability. While a large ensemble approach is certainly compatible with the album’s funk, hip-hop, and R&b-inflected stylings, the mixing and...

People will tell you Tom Waits’ best album is Rain Dogs. This is not strictly true. It is perhaps the most Waits-ian of Tom Waits albums, by virtue of having a Waits lookalike on the cover and a song selection that ranges across virtually every genre of music (and combinations thereof) Waits could wrangle. But the best Tom Waits album is not Rain Dogs. Instead it’s Bone Machine (which netted Waits his first Grammy in 1993), and it turns 25 years old today.
Waits explained Rain Dogs’ titular inspiration to Spin in 1985: “You know, dogs in the rain lose their way back home.

At a time when few contemporary rock stars roam the Earth, Dan Auerbach stands out as an anomaly—both a purveyor of gut-punching guitar leads with the Black Keys, and also an audio artisan with a relentless commitment to his craft. Both qualities have elevated him to a Madison Square Garden headliner and one of the most in-demand record producers in the industry. Sometimes accused of standing on the shoulders of classic rock giants who have come before, Auerbach went straight to the source on his second solo disc, Waiting on a Song.

Director Harmony Korine currently has his hands in two features that are in different stages of development: “The Trap,” a star-studded film that includes Idris Elba, Benicio del Toro, and Al Pacino that was set to begin shooting last year but ended up being permanently delayed, and “Tampa,” an adaptation of Alissa Nutting’s acclaimed book by the same name that follows a teacher seducing a young student. But while he’s not tackling those two films, Korine has taken on another assignment, an advertisement for Yves Saint Laurent’s female fragrance Black Opium. Watch the ad below, courtesy of The Playlist.

What could have been an impressive addition to Dan Auerbach’s Wikipedia page is probably going to wind up being a mildly depressing addition to his Wikipedia page. The Black Keys vocalist is currently being sued by the producers of a documentary about legendary blues musician Howlin’ Wolf, for which Auerbach was hired to direct and executive produce, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In a complaint filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court last week, Smokestack Lightning Inc. contends that Auerbach drove up the costs of their film and subsequently dropped out prior to its completion, refusing to pay for the additional expenses he incurred.
After being interviewed for Smokestack Lightning: The Legendary Howlin’ Wolf—along with other prominent musicians like Jimmy Page, Buddy Guy, and Bill Wyman—Auerbach was apparently offered the chance to take over creative control of the project, which was at that point in post-production. The...

Director Harmony Korine and Gucci Mane have teamed up for a new ad for the apparel brand, Supreme. Filmed at the rapper’s home, the one-minute clip starts off with him playing the piano, singing and talking about the brand. Gucci, dressed in white shirt with the Supreme logo, red pants and scarf, talks about his shopping habits and how he never goes into the store, just simply online shops and “hits the button.”
At the end of the video, the rapper is seen entering his recording studio and jamming to some music. Both Gucci and Korine worked together on the 2012 film “Spring Breakers.” The director also recently visited him while he was in prison at the beginning of the year.

The upcoming blockbuster Suicide Squad has dropped the video for the soundtrack cut "Sucker for Pain," featuring a Suicide Squad-like assortment of MCs – Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Ty Dolla $ign and Logic – alongside rockers Imagine Dragons and X Ambassadors.
The video sees all six artists involved performing their joint cut on various sets from the Suicide Squad film: Lil Wayne sits atop the Joker's fiery throne, while Logic's straitjacketed appearance is a nod to the film's Harley Quinn. However, for fans of DC Comics and the collective of super villains,...

Last week, Warner Bros. unveiled the soundtrack song list and artwork for their highly-anticipated comic book adaptation Suicide Squad, which hits theaters on August 5. Before the soundtrack list was confirmed, there had been rumors that the lead song off this soundtrack would be "Heathens" by Twenty One Pilots, and that the music video may hit soon. It seems that rumor has been confirmed, with the music video dropping today.
Like most music video movie tie-ins, this "Heathens" video features snippets of footage from the movie, particularly within the Belle Reve prison. The video follows members of the band as they have been thrown in this prison with the various members of Task Force X. For fans who pre-order the album starting today on iTunes, you'll get a free instant download of the "Heathens" song. The band is said to be a favorite of both director David Ayer and Jared Leto...

The trailers for David Ayer's "Suicide Squad" have been memorable bits of marketing thanks to clever uses of classic songs like "Bohemain Rhapsody," "Ballroom Blitz," "I Started a Joke" and "You Don't Own Me".
The film itself will boast a score by "Gravity" composer Steven Price, but also will release a tie-in soundtrack that comes packed with various classic and contemporary numbers by the likes of Eminem, Skrillex, Grimes, Lil Wayne and Action Bronson. Today Warner Bros. released the track list for the upcoming anti-hero film Suicide Squad. The fourteen songs are by some of today’s most recognized talent and a smattering of new voices. Most of the song titles are vague and/or appropriate for the entirety of Suicide Squad’s run time, but let’s peek anyway. Any clue in a hype drought! #1. Over the past couple of days, there has been a spat of fake Suicide Squad soundtrack listings making the rounds, for whatever reason. But to counter this, Amazon has actually updated their site with pre-sale information. And they've announced the confirmed song list. The hard rocking line-up is headlined by some usual suspect, including Skrillex, Lil' Wayne, Eminem and Twenty One Pilots. We also get a look at the cover art.
When it comes to choosing his music for any given project, David Ayer has been as meticulous as Quentin Tarantino. And it was said in the past that some of the older songs included in the movie are quite important to the plot in the same way that Star-Lord's Awesome Mix Tape Vol. 1 was to Guardians of the Galaxy. Though the two records have a decidedly different flavor. This one looks to be a bit on the heavier side.

Steve Miller won some kudos for taking the music industry to task during his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last week, but the Black Keys, who inducted him into the hall, weren’t big fans of the display. In an interview with Rolling Stone on Wednesday, Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach said he and his bandmate, Pat Carney, were disappointed by Miller, who complained about, among other things, the fact that the Hall wanted to charge his bandmates and their wives $10,000 to attend the ceremony. Auerbach went so far as to say that he and Carney...

From 1975 to 1979, Carter played the Amazon princess in the landmark TV series, instantly becoming the quintessential embodiment of the golden-lasso-flinging heroine. It's no disaster, but there's still not much point to the remake of Point Break...
Kathryn Bigelow's Point Break was fairly successful when it hit cinemas back in 1991, pitting Keanu Reeves' rookie FBI agent against Patrick Swayze's impossibly cool surfing bank robber in a film that landed with audiences but was largely dismissed by critics.
Its uniquely sensitive spin on macho action movies has led to its reappraisal as a cult classic, thus making this remake pretty much inevitable. Few of us would have predicted that director/cinematographer Ericson Core would convert it into an extreme sports movie, but that's one of the only surprises to be had here.
After a tragic accident, former poly-athlete Johnny Utah (Luke Bracey) leaves the adrenaline junkie scene behind and applies to join the FBI. He's still on probation when he discovers that a daring gang of bank...

Black Keys fans who have been waiting nearly two years for a new record are about to get a tasty treat to tide them over, and boy, it's a strange one. An upstart comic-book publisher has enlisted guitarist/vocalist Dan Auerbach to put together an album that will accompany a new comics mini-series called Murder Ballads. It’s gonna get bluesy, people.According to publisher Z2 Comics, Murder Ballads is a “rock ’n’ roll noir story about the music industry and redemption.” It follows a down-on-his-luck record-label owner named Nate Theodore, who makes a desperate mid-winter trek to escape his problems — only to stumble across Donny and Marvell Frontweathers, two African-American siblings “who play a raucous brand of doom-laden country blues.” Unsettling occurrences no doubt ensue. It’s being written by comics writer and music journalist Gabe Soria and illustrated by artist Paul Reinwand, and it’s slated to come...

Well, here’s the feel-bad non-hit of the winter. Apparently as enthralled and disgusted by the Netflix documentary series “Making a Murderer” as the rest of us were, Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach and his other group, The Arcs, have recorded a new single, “Lake Superior,” inspired by the tale of Wisconsin man Steven Avery, who many feel was wrongfully convicted of murder — after spending 18 years in prison on a rape charge of which he was later exonerated. Taking its cues from Avery’s life story, the song includes lyrics such as, “Your alibi will never do/When the whole town’s got.

How deep down the rabbit hole have we all gone for Making a Murderer? Not as deep as the Black Keys' Dan Auerbach, who, inspired by the show, just released a song under his new band the Arcs. The band says they felt compelled to write the song, "Lake Superior" (named for the show's Wisconsin setting), after they spent "a few sleepless nights" getting a "sneak peek at what goes on behind the curtains of our criminal justice system." Over the course of two days, they put together this breezy song, which is as much a reflection of the show's brutally honest depiction of a broken class system, as it is about what happened to Steven Avery. "It's like Billy Childish says, 'We live in troubled times,'" they wrote with the announcement. All proceeds from downloads will go to the Innocence Project, which helped exonerate Avery after 18 years...
