Few horror movie sub-genres are more enduring, influential, and prolific than the haunted house movie. A solid genre staple, haunted house movies captivate with their eerie atmospheres and the intense psychological games that so often unfold. From early cinematic examples like The Old Dark House (1932) to modern re-imaginings such as Steven Soderbergh’s Presence, now playing in theaters everywhere (get tickets now), the haunted house subgenre has consistently evolved while retaining its core elements.

The enduring appeal of these stories lies in the sub-genre’s ability to tap into universal fears—abandonment, the unknown, and the unsettling notion that our homes, meant to be places of safety, can become sites of terror. While traditional tropes like creaky floorboards, flickering lights, tragic backstories, and isolated locations have certainly shaped the subgenre’s identity, films that challenge and expand these tried and true tropes have allowed the subgenre to evolve and flourish.

As we usher in a brand-new year of genre filmmaking, I think it’s also worth looking back on what did and didn’t work about our previous trip around the sun. When it comes to the horror genre, that means celebrating the latest additions to horror iconography that were cooked up by filmmakers attempting to take the genre to the next level.

And in a year chalk-full of new monsters and killers I thought it might be fun to highlight six of the scariest horror masks of 2024. After all, a slasher is only as good as his murderous attire, and last year offered up plenty of memorable headgear for fans of stylish antagonists.

As usual, this list is purely based on personal opinion, but keep in mind that we’ll be focusing on the scare factor and memorability of the masks themselves rather than the overall quality of the film they originally appeared in.

With Christmas just over a week away, it’s time to kick the holiday horror viewing into overdrive. But what if you’re not feeling the merriment or holiday spirit? You wouldn’t be alone.

That’s why this week’s streaming picks are dedicated to feel-bad, bleak holiday horror movies that don’t care at all about warm fuzzy feels or happily ever afters!

These five horror movies capture Scrooge’s “Bah Humbug” sentiments for the holidays, delivering bleak downers and grim explorations of humanity’s dark side instead.

It's the holiday season, which can mean only one thing: it's time to watch Christmas horror movies! Christmas horror is nothing new. In the Victorian era, folks would gather by the fireside around Christmas time to tell each other ghost stories (this is how we got "A Christmas Carol"). Over the years, the horror genre has embraced this idea by unleashing horror films set on or around Christmas. Some of these films are quite bad and seem to recycle the same boring idea ("What if a guy dressed as Santa Claus killed people?!") over and over again. But there are others that make the yuletide bright. Hell, even some of the killer Santa stories work. As the weird year that was 2024 comes to a close, and the horrifying uncertainty of 2025 lurks right around the corner, let's chug some mulled wine, deck the halls, and watch the following Christmas-centric horror movies.

The Soul Eater

What at first seems like a routine investigation into a brutal killing spirals into something much darker in French thriller The Soul Eater, the seventh film made by the directing team of Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo. It’s a film which premièred at Fantasia 2024 and which opens in US cinemas this week. The directors and I previously spoke back in 2017 when they made Leatherface, and their work has evolved a good deal since then, so it was nice to catch up and discuss their process this time around.

We can all agree that ‘random person doing terrible things in a small, picturesque town’ has become a prominent horror/thriller sub-genre by now. Sure, it started with Nordic noirs becoming a pop culture thing, but both South Korean and French cinema have contributed to that as well. It does falter with the big reveal though, the thing on which these movies hinge most times. Not that it does not go well with the story, but this is the kind of thing that has been done to death already. The Soul Eater doesn’t offer anything new in that context. Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury have driven cinematic daggers into our hearts for over a decade. Whether you point at Inside, Livid, Among the Living, etcetera, the duo conceptualizes from a well of prolific darkness. Their latest feature, The Soul Eater, doesnt lack any of that signature gut-shredding terribleness. Its the least horror-forward of their catalog thus far, yet even so, blends unsettling folkloric imagery into a procedural thriller thats not quite Longlegs or Megalomaniac, but will still leave your soul wounded and rotten by the time the credits roll.

2024 marks the 50th anniversary of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, making this year's unofficial fan holiday extra special. The franchise now includes a comic book series, two documentaries, three video games, and nine films, one of which was almost lost: Leatherface, a truly strange telling of the title character's origin story with its own unique continuity. Slated for a 2016 release, then temporarily shelved for unknown reasons, this bizarre prequel almost didn't see the light of day.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre setup is simple: the cannibalistic Sawyer clan devours witless trespassers. However, like its famous villain, it has changed faces many times. Tobe Hooper's 1986 sequel was as satirical as his 1974 original was realistic; 1990's Leatherface was pure horror, while 1996's The Next Generation resembled The Rocky Horror Picture Show in its cartoony exuberance. The 2003 and 2006 Platinum Dunes films were pitch-dark, while 2013's Texas Chainsaw 3D reframed the Sawyers as folk heroes.

French filmmakers Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo, the duo behind Inside, Leatherface, and The Deep House, step outside of horror ever so slightly for their latest, The Soul Eater. The adaptation of Alexis Laipsker‘s novel, penned by Annelyse Batrel and Ludovic Lefebvre, dabbles in the supernatural to lend atmosphere and intrigue to a standard investigative thriller. Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival has unveiled its second wave of titles, which includes the world premiere of Ant Timpson’s “Bookworm” as the opening night film. This year’s edition, the 28th for the festival, will run from July 18 to August 4. More titles will be announced July 3.

Other world premieres included in the line-up are “The Beast Within” starring Kit Harington (“Game of Thrones”), which follows a young girl as she starts to question her atypical life in her family’s compound in England, and makes a shocking discovering about her dad; and “Mononoke the Movie: The Phantom in the Rain,” with director Kenji Nakamura reviving the thrills of the original anime.

There are a lot of bad prequels. There are some good prequels, but a great prequel is a rare thing to come across. They’re like a rare animal, the unicorns of cinema. Some wonder if such a thing even exists, but when you do watch one, it’s really rather something.

George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga might just be one, a prequel which somehow manages to justify its existence and repeat the exhilarating sense of time and place as Mad Max: Fury Road. I’d be surprised if we saw another action film as handsomely made as Furiosa in 2024. Or 2025. Or 2026.

French film finance, production and distribution group Logical Pictures is out in force in Cannes this year with connections to 11 films, including Competition titles Emilia Perez, Limonov and Parthenope.

The company helped bankroll the Palme d’Or contenders through its three-year co-production and co-financing deal with French major Pathé, which was announced in early 2023 and involves its Logical Content Ventures fund.

Paris-based international film sales company Pulsar Content has formed a strategic partnership with Digital District Entertainment, a leading post-production, VFX and production facilities company, with offices in France, Belgium and India. The partnership will create “a streamlined and cost-effective production process for international film projects,” according to a statement.

Pulsar Content’s Cannes lineup includes Un Certain Regard’s “Niki” by Céline Sallette, Antoine Chevrolliers’ “Block Pass,” premiering in Critics’ Week, and Camila Beltran’s “Mi Bestia,” premiering at Acid.

That being said, like all iconic series, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise is not without its issues. One of the most notable things fans complain about is the significantly convoluted timeline, which can make it difficult to dive in and start watching. I remember always enjoying Inside, and first saw it not long after its initial release. It was brutal, gory and set on Christmas Eve. Therefore, a ‘Christmas’ movie that, for a while, got watched every holiday period. But, with my ever-expanded collection of Christmas movies, and not enough time to watch them, it had been several years since I had seen the film. When Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury stormed onto the scene with A L'Interieur it was with a promise that was central to the appeal of that film: "we are not gonna pull any punches". As important linchpins of the New French Extremity, that film's central premise, a pregnant woman having to shield herself from a violent home invader, really promised a grim, bleak and taboo breaking filmmaking duo. With later films, they constantly tried to push boundaries with what they could do as directors, to sometimes mixed results. But Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury never are lazy: their films deconstruct horror, explore societal taboos, and go as far as you can go in mainstream horror. You don’t need to have lived in the proverbial middle of nowhere to understand the kind of terror Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury’s The Soul Eater mines from the fictional Roquenoix. As shot by Simon Roca, this remote hamlet in northeastern France isn’t a ghost town so much as a burial ground where humans and buildings alike are waiting to rot. A grandiose sanatorium once towered over the tree-shrouded hills, bringing in enough cash and tourists to fill the village’s coffers. But when a motorway was built across the valley, the tourists disappeared, the sanatorium was abandoned; and the few who stayed behind were left to wrestle with an ancestral legend and a series of murders that may or may not be connected with it.

The single most terrifying thing in The Soul Eater isn’t the titular devourer, but that spectral, lifeless town where its victims are stranded.

The film is set to strike stomach-wrenching fear into audiences once more, 15 years after its original release in 2007 as Second Sight Films announce a brand-new Inside Limited Edition Blu-ray Box set release on 5 February 2024 complete with a host of fantastic new special features.

Following a car accident that leaves her husband dead, expectant mother Sarah (Alysson Paradis – The Childhood of Icarus) is left to prepare for her impending birth alone while grieving her terrible loss. But when a stranger turns up at her house on Christmas Eve, things take a terrifying, unimaginably twisted turn… as the deranged intruder will stop at nothing to take her unborn baby.

Founded in 2012, Paris-based WTFilms, run by Gregory Chambet and Dimitri Stephanides, has built a strong reputation as a sales agent for break-out genre pics and has recently diversified into production, to access hit projects. As competition ramps up for more ambitious projects with strong theatrical potential, Chambet decided to move to Los Angeles in mid-2023, while Stephanides remains based in Paris.

“At WTFilms, we aim to continue to work on both sides of the Atlantic,” explains Chambet. “In the current market it’s important to invest in projects by talented directors, with innovative concepts, budgeted above $5 million. It makes sense for me to be based here because we work a lot with partners here and L.A. is a key talent hub. We’re on the lookout for talent from all around the world. There are really exciting genre directors popping up everywhere – in North America and also in Latin America and Asia.

WTFilms will be at the Rendez-Vous with a genre-focused slate.

Paris-based sales outfit WTFilms has taken on Fabrice du Welz’s Belgian crime thriller Maldoror and unveiled a first look at the film inspired by a true story.

The film stars Anthony Bajon as an impulsive police recruit tasked with a secret mission to track a dangerous sex offender. But when the operation fails, he goes rogue to hunt down the culprits. Now in post, the film is produced by Belgium’s Frakas Productions, with The Jokers Films’ production arm.

The 12 Days of Creepmas continues on Bloody Disgusting, with the tenth day getting into the anti-festive spirit for all the holiday grinches out there. This is for those that approach December with a “bah humbug” attitude and prefer any iconography or holiday theming to be kept to a minimum when it comes to horror. Most of these ten horror titles are technically set on or around Christmas, but can’t muster up enough cheer to really embrace the holiday spirit. Many of which don’t even bother with Christmas at all, beyond a quick scene or mention.

If you’re already sick of Santa Claus, and all things holiday related, here are ten holiday horror movies – technically – that would rather just cut straight to the horror.

The upcoming movie is an adaptation of the novel by Alexis Laipsker.

The Soul Eater is produced by Phase 4 Productions and Place du Marché Productions and will receive a theatrical release in France. No word yet on a US release date. Stay tuned.

As of this writing, there are nine movies in the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" series, and sussing out their chronology is one of the more herculean tasks a horror fan may find themselves undertaking. Like the "Halloween" movies, the "Texas Chainsaw" flicks abide by a choose-your-own-adventure structure, with some movies following a definite timeline, and others merrily ignoring previous chapters. Confoundingly, several of them have almost identical titles. The only consistent element of "Texas Chainsaw" is that they are all horrifically violent and unbearably disturbing. But, y'know, in a good way.

The premise of the "Texas Chainsaw" movies is simple. Thanks to rampant American poverty, entire families have been forced to live off the grid in remote, rural parts of the country. One of these families, largely inbred and blissfully detached from conventional morality, has taken to kidnapping passersby, stripping them for meat, and using their skin and bones as construction materials.

Earlier this year, it was announced that the last horror film from the filmmaking duo of Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo would be an adaptation of the Alexis Laipsker novel The Soul Eater (a.k.a. Le mangeur d’âmes), with Virginie Ledoyen (The Beach), Paul Hamy (The Ornithologist), and Sandrine Bonnaire (Women at War) taking on the lead roles. Now Deadline reports that WTFilms will be presenting The Soul Eater, which is currently in post-production, to potential buyers at the upcoming American Film Market. That presentation will include a screening of an early promo of the film. Along with that report comes the unveiling of a creepy first look image, which can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Summer is right around the corner. The most significant indicator of this for horror fans isn’t in the increasingly warmer weather and longer days but in the arrival of new shark horror.

Leo Maidenberg’s Paris-based company Place du Marché Productions is developing a slate of French and international films and TV series with acclaimed talents, including Daphna Levin, the creator of the Israeli series “Euphoria,” as well as Sarah Kaminsky (“Raid Dingue”) and Leïla Sy (“Banlieusards”).

Maidenberg, who launched Place du Marché in 2018 after a career in diplomacy and made his producing debut with Caroline Fourest’s politically charged action film “Sisters in Arms,” has teamed with Kim Younes at Elvie Productions on a pair of high concept Israeli series.

The first title produced by the two banners is “The Truth,” a police thriller series co-written and directed by Levin, whose credits also include the original Israeli series “In Therapy.” Set in Tel Aviv, “The Truth” opens on the day of the final verdict for the most controversial murder case in Israel, 10 years after the incident which took place in a high school gym.

I thought I was done buying The Texas Chain Saw Massacre after upgrading to the 40th anniversary edition Blu-ray in 2014. Between the crisp presentation and the copious extras, I was certain it was the definitive version of Tobe Hooper‘s 1974 masterpiece. Yet here I am, nearly a decade later, ready to sing the praises of Dark Sky Films‘ 4K Ultra HD edition.

Long before “gritty” was an industry buzzword, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre epitomized the term. As such, one might be wary that a 4K restoration could hinder the viewing experience, but that is not at all the case. Utilizing the 4K scan from the aforementioned Blu-ray, which was approved by Hooper, and now with a wider color gamut courtesy of Hdr, the picture is presented in staggering clarity while maintaining the 16mm film grain. The oppressive heat is virtually palpable.

There are holiday horror movies that wholly commit to the yuletide theme, and then there are holiday horror movies you might not even recall being set over or around Christmas. This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to the latter category. These horror titles make it clear that they’re set around the holidays without that ever factoring much into the plot… if at all.

That makes them perfect watches when you’ve already exhausted the holiday horror classics and want something a little outside the box. Or way out of the box, in some instances.

The Deep House is the latest film by French filmmakers Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury. This comes after Kandisha which, while better receive than Leatherface, still failed to bring them the acclaim they received for their first two films, Inside and Livide. Can this rather ingenious-sounding twist on the haunted house film turn things around for them?

Ben and Tina (Camille Rowe; Knuckledust) are YouTubers whose speciality is videos of creepy old abandoned buildings. When we first meet them they’re prowling around the remains of an allegedly haunted Ukrainian asylum where a nurse poisoned her patients. Three months later they’re in France, about to do something very different, an underwater exploration. When their intended location turns out to be a crowded local beach they need to find somewhere new to shoot.
