The Berlin Film Festival has unveiled the lineup for the 2025 edition, running February 13-23. It’s the first official lineup overseen by new artistic director and former BFI London Film Festival leader Tricia Tuttle, who succeeds Carlo Chatrian and brings her background as an American journalist and curator to the annual German showcase. She’s also working with co-directors of programming, Jacqueline Lyanga and Michael Stütz, to help reposition the Berlinale’s profile among the great global film festivals and lure bigger-name filmmakers in the process.

This year’s lineup, announced Tuesday, January 21, features new films from Richard Linklater, Michel Franco, Rebecca Lenkiewicz, Hong Sangsoo (“What Does That Nature Say to You”), Radu Jude (“Kontinental ’25”), and Lucile Hadžihalilović (“The Ice Tower”). Already confirmed in the mix are “Mickey 17” from Bong Joon Ho and Ira Sachs’ Sundance premiere “Peter Hujar’s Day,” plus Tom Tykwer’s “The Light” opening the festival.

Following last week’s lineup announcement, the Berlinale 2025 has now fleshed out its slate with the Competition, Special, and Perspectives sections. Highlights include the world premieres of Richard Linklater’s Blue Moon starring Ethan Hawke, Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale, and Andrew Scott; Radu Jude’s Kontinental ’25; Hong Sangsoo’s What Does that Nature Say to You; Michel Franco’s Dreams starring Jessica Chastain; Lucile Hadžihalilović’s The Ice Tower starring Marion Cotillard; and Rebecca Lenkiewicz’s Hot Milk with Emma Mackey, Fiona Shaw, and Vicky Krieps.

The Half of It star Daniel Diemer plays the titular younger brother, Jake, who is tasked with driving his troubled older brother Pete (Philip Ettinger) from Albuquerque to Seattle for a family intervention following his suicide attempt. A self-reflexive origin story about creation, growth, and the myth of the lone artist, “My First Film” announces a bold, disruptive new talent in American cinema. But if the film’s release is anything like Zia Anger’s experience in the film world thus far, it will elicit a maddening whimper where it should have made a bang.

If you've ever watched any behind-the-scenes footage from "The Shining," you might remember Jack Nicholson working himself up into a frenzy prior to shooting the famous "Here's Johnny" scene. Director Ethan Hawke's use of fantasy sequences overwhelms the film, detracting from the narrative and causing pacing issues. Despite a talented cast and meaningful subject matter, Wildcat's emphasis on style over substance results in a forgettable experience.

Wildcat explores the formative early life of celebrated Southern Gothic novelist Mary Flannery O'Connor through vivid depictions of her imaginative writing process. The deeply devout O'Connor struggled to reconcile her Catholic faith with artistic ambitions while suffering from debilitating lupus. Director/co-writer Ethan Hawke, scion Maya Hawke, and a venerated supporting cast revel in an overindulgent portrayal that confuses creative expression for substantive depth. A ping-pong structure, where the ensemble plays multiple characters, grinds the pacing to a cinematic drip. There's a lot of effort on display. That's appreciated, but the experience becomes arduous and unfortunately forgettable.

Full disclosure: I’ve been looking forward to this interview ever since I read the novel Ash Wednesday as a teenager. Ethan Hawke, co-writer and director of Wildcat, is an actor and filmmaker who has been as important to me as any artist in my life. Ethan Hawke’s Wildcat won’t tell you much about what Flannery O’Connor accomplished. The audience won’t learn about O’Connor’s place in the literary world, the larger culture, or alongside other consciously Catholic fiction writers like Graham Greene. There’s a worthy determination to the way that Wildcat sees O’Connor’s world almost entirely from her mystical, pain-rattled perspective. But by limiting the film’s viewpoint so strictly, Hawke and co-screenwriter Shelby Gaines miss an opportunity to introduce O’Connor to a wider audience.

Hawke’s gnomic biopic opens with a 24-year-old O’Connor (Maya Hawke) trying to make it in New York, circa 1950. Having won a literary prize while attending the prestigious Iowa Writers Workshop, she’s trying to get her first novel, Wise Blood, published. But O’Connor, incapable of small talk or artistic compromise, isn’t a striving literary ingenue working the angles and currying favor.

2023 saw many new shows airing on streaming services and cable television, as well as old favorites making returns.

Bupkis will not be returning for a second season after all. Pete Davidson has cancelled his plans to continue the series, which was renewed by Peacock a month after its June 2023 release.

The comedy-drama series, which stars Pete Davidson, Edie Falco, and Joe Pesci, is a heightened and fictionalized version of Davidson's life, ala Curb Your Enthusiasm. The first season follows Davidson as he attempts to work through his family's unique dynamics, the complexities of fame, and how to form meaningful relationships.

Pete Davidson is laying his comedy series Bupkis to rest ahead of its planned second season. Davidson says while the semi-autobiographical comedy has been a great experience, it’s also an emotionally taxing show to bring to life on screens.

Davidson said about the sunsetting of Bupkis, “I’ve always seen Bupkis as a window into my life, since it is so personal and about my struggles and family. After nearly a decade of my personal life being in the media I wanted a chance to tell my story my way,” Davidson told The Hollywood Reporter. “Of all the work I’ve ever done, Bupkis is by far what I’m most proud of. I am so grateful to Lorne Michaels and Broadway Video, Peacock, Universal Television and the amazing cast and writers for helping me create something honest, funny and heartfelt. I do also feel that this part of my life is finished.

Ethan Hawke goes back behind the camera for Wildcat, and here are details of his new film – plus a trailer.

Ethan Hawke is better known as an actor than a director, with a prolific career that has included many collaborations with Richard Linklater – the sublime Before trilogy, Tape, The Newton Boys and Boyhood stand tall. Plus, films as diverse as Dead Poet’s Society, Training Day, The Purge, Predestination and Lord Of War – the sequel to the latter is currently in development, with writer and director Andrew Niccol and star Nicholas Cage on board. Exclusive: Oscilloscope Laboratories has settled on a theatrical release date for its Flannery O’Connor biopic Wildcat, co-written and directed by Ethan Hawke, following the acquisition of North American rights. Exec produced by and starring the filmmaker’s daughter, Maya Hawke, the film will open at The Angelika in New York, and in L.A. theaters still to be determined on May 3rd, with a national roll-out to follow.

Competitors in its opening weekend will include Uni’s action comedy The Fall Guy, starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, and an unknown title from Disney.
