February 2025 is the 20th anniversary of Constantine, a supernatural action film starring Keanu Reeves and directed by Francis Lawrence. The story follows the professional exorcist John Constantine, who’s capable of discovering half-angels and half-demons that walk the Earth impersonating ordinary people. The film was originally released on February 18, 2005, and Keanu and Francis have openly reminisced about their experiences on the film, and their plans for a sequel.

The Constantine movie is an adaptation of the DC Comics character, also named John Constantine. Created by Alan Moore and Stephen R. Bisette, the chain-smoking exorcist first appeared as a supporting character in Alan and Stephen’s Swamp Thing, before starring in his own series known as Hellblazer. Read on to learn more.

It’s been twenty years since the release of Constantine, but the chances of a sequel have never looked more promising. While speaking with Inverse, Keanu Reeves said they recently pitched Constantine 2 to DC Studios, and now they’re moving ahead on the script.

“We’ve been trying to make this film for over a decade, and we just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios and they said, ‘Okay,’” Reeves said. “So, we’re going to try and write a script.” As you might expect, Reeves didn’t drop any hint as to what type of story the sequel will tell, only to confirm that it will be set in the same world as the original. “We’re not going off that,” he said. “John Constantine’s going to be tortured even more.“

It's really great to see how Constantine has become a cult classic over the years. Released in 2005 at a time when supernatural dramas were all the rage, the horror thriller barely acknowledged the fact that it was based on a DC / Vertigo comic book character. Instead of a blonde, foul-mouthed British man in a brown trenchcoat, John Constantine was a suit-wearing American with dark hair played by everyone's favorite actor Keanu Reeves.

Two decades later and a sequel is in development at Warner Bros., with Reeves set to return. The film was announced in 2022 and it was music to fans' ears. Reeves has experienced a career resurgence over the past decade due to the John Wick franchise, so Constantine 2 felt inevitable - especially when you consider its passionate fanbase. And yet, it always felt so far away, too.

For years, fans of the DC universe have eagerly anticipated the return of one of its most enigmatic characters on the big screen: Keanu Reeves’ John Constantine. After decades of false-starts, complete abandonment, and more recent rumors, a new update has suggested that the long-delayed follow-up to 1997’s Constantine is still very much alive and could still become a reality for those who have been patiently waiting for it to happen.

Director Francis Lawrence recently answered the question of what is happening with Constantine 2 during an interview with Collider, and his comments may not be categorically conclusive, but they certainly spark up debates about the possibility of this fan pipe-dream actually becoming reality. Lawrence said tantalizingly of the sequel:

Reassembling at a Megacon Orlando panel, Legends actor Caity Lotz, Brandon Routh, Arthur Darvill, and Matt Ryan were all asked what characters they'd like to play if James Gunn ever cast them in the Dcu timeline. Reports suggest that Warner Bros. was working on The Flash game. While that might make sense considering the failure of the movie starring Ezra Miller, I can’t understand why Warner Bros canceled a full-fledged game based on John Constantine. Seriously, this guy had all the potential to counter to Marvel’s Doctor Strange.

When Zack Snyder made Man of Steel with Henry Cavill, there were no plans of building a Dceu. However, DC executives were eager to catch up with Marvel, who were thriving with their superhero franchise. In their misguided vision for a DC franchise, the studio tried many things unsuccessfully before opting for a complete restructuring under James Gunn.

The Dceu already underwent several course corrections before the restructuring, resulting in a bunch of canceled or abandoned projects. After the new regime took over control, all planned films in the former Dceu were effectively canceled.

As fans are seeing the start of James Gunn's Dcu, it's a portrait of diversity. Superman will bring about cosmic wonder, aliens and metahumans fighting on Earth. While Creature Commandos Season 1 has already explored monsters fighting for Amanda Waller's Task Force M.

The latter also introduced the Dcu's Circe, confirming magic is in play. To that point, there is one actor who would be perfect for DC's most underrated supernatural hero: John Constantine. This is none other than Gerard Butler, as he has already showed his acting range for this job thanks to his role as Nick in Den of Thieves 2: Pantera.

DC’s fan-favorite Elseworlds series, DC vs. Vampires: World War V, has just reached its midpoint, bringing major developments as some of DC’s most powerful beings join the human-vampire war on Earth-63. However, the pressing question remains: will the arrival of these all-powerful entities bring salvation—or total annihilation?

What began as a two-sided war between humans and vampires has now transformed into a chaotic three-front battle: humans vs. gods vs. vampires.

Matthew Rosenberg and Otto Schmidt’s DC vs. Vampires: World War V hits a climactic midpoint in issue #6, where battle lines are officially drawn, and war erupts between Vampire Queen Barbara Gordon’s undead army and the Green Arrow-led Human Resistance.

While the series has been building toward this moment, it’s clear that this is neither the endgame nor the most pivotal battle the heroes will face.

Constantine was released in 2005 to mixed reviews, and while it's unclear if the sequel will ever happen, there are plenty of reasons to be excited about it. The Constantine sequel was announced to be in the works in 2022, but it remains to be seen whether the project will move forward. With DC currently focusing on establishing a new cinematic universe overseen by James Gunn, projects like Constantine 2 would only work as Elseworlds stories.

Constantine may be one of the darkest fantasy movies of all time, incorporating horror elements well-suited to director Francis Lawrence. This movie only has 46% on Rotten Tomatoes, despite being one of the most engaging, well-conceived, and original action and horror flicks of the 2000s. Based on the DC Comics character, the movie took a lot of creative liberties but delivered a highly entertaining mix of stylized violence and character-driven drama.

Poison Ivy has become one of DC’s best-loved characters, but now her power is being challenged by a surprise Swamp Thing character. Yet now, an ex-lover of Swamp Thing has taken a dark turn in DC Horror Presents #3, threatening Poison Ivy’s supremacy.

In the story “The Chthonian Dawn,” written and drawn by Francesco Francavilla and appearing in DC Horror Presents #3, Batman is investigating a break-in and murders at a research lab. The scientists in the lab were seeking ways to accelerate plant growth. The trail leads Batman to Abigail Arcane, the ex-wife of Swamp Thing Alec Holland. Abigail tells Batman she is serving a new god now, named “Asintman,” who seeks to assimilate all life into it.

After 90 years, DC is finally allowing its oldest hero to step into the spotlight–but how long will it last? DC’s new Justice League Unlimited has taken an “all-hands-on-deck” approach to the team, with nearly every hero on Earth a member. This has allowed some lesser-known heroes to rub shoulders with Superman and Batman, and now in issue two, one of DC’s oldest heroes joins the team.

Justice League Unlimited #2 is written by Mark Waid and drawn by Dan Mora. A group of rogue Parademons are attacking, and the League dispatches a squad to help. Among the heroes sent are League stalwarts such as Superman and Wonder Woman, mixed in with new recruits Black Lightning, Star Sapphire…and Doctor Occult. There are many things that DC Comics fans are longing for, but a third Injustice video game is definitely on that list. It's something we've been discussing since completing Injustice 2 and, with that having come out in 2017, it's been some time indeed.

With that in mind, let's do some more theorizing, this time about which characters could appear in Injustice 3 if it happens. To be honest, there are so many DC characters that haven't been used in the Injustice games that it would be impossible to list them all, so let's look at some of the ones that I want to see the most and the ones that fans have been clamoring over for years. 

Magical characters

Let's begin by talking about the magical characters of the DC Universe, because most of them haven't received much attention in these games. While characters like Swamp Thing and Shazam were playable characters in the previous games,...

Jenna Coleman, who portrays Johanna Constantine in Netflix’s The Sandman, is coming back for the upcoming second season. Although she can’t reveal many details about her return — the NDAs are strict — the British actress recently confirmed that she will appear in the upcoming new episodes.

Her big appearance came in episode 3, "Dream a Little Dream of Me," where she assists Dream (Tom Sturridge) in recovering his pouch of sand. Blu-ray.com has reported on the newly revealed details of the new physical media copy of the Francis Lawrence movie. The Ultra High-def Blu-ray will hit retailers on February 18, 2025. Twenty years after it first hit theaters, Constantine is finally getting a 4K Ultra HD upgrade.

The DC Vertigo adaptation, which stars Keanu Reeves as the Hellblazing occultist, will be available to purchase either on a 4K Blu-ray disc with a standard or steelbook copy, or digitally via all major online retailers from February 18 (you can check out a list of additional features below).

Shortly after James Gunn announced the first "chapter" of the new Dcu slate last year, rumors began to circulate that a direct sequel was in the works, and Warner Bros. would later confirm that the project was indeed in the early stages of development.

Since then, we've had conflicting reports relating to the movie's status, and a recent rumor that Gunn and Peter Safran had decided to cancel a number of planned projects led to speculation that Constantine 2 would likely be among them.

Constantine 2’s director, Francis Lawrence, opened up to Comic Book to tell fans why it took so long for a sequel - even though he’d been wanting to do it since the first movie hit theaters in 2005.

Lawrence said about five years ago, the idea of a sequel started to be taken a bit more seriously. “The truth is, somewhere around the 15th anniversary or something, we did a Zoom, and we all were discussing trying to get it up and going again,” Lawrence said of the sequel.

2005’s Constantine, starring Keanu Reeves, lands on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK in February 2025. More here.

We’ve known for a little while now that Warner Bros had intended to mark the 20th birthday of the Constantine movie with a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray debut for the film at some point in 2025. Now we have the confirmation of just when to expect it.

The studio has inked in a release of 17th February 2025 for the 4K disc. You can find the listing for it and order yourself a copy right here.

It looks like we’re going to get two discs in the box, although we’ve not got absolute confirmation of that. We’re hearing, but don’t hold us to it, that it’s going to be a 4K disc, and a Blu-ray that primarily brings across previous extra features.
