For the most part, eclectic indie writer/director Chad Hartigan has made an entire career out of taking his own personal experiences and spinning them into something different or turning them on their head entirely (see “Morris From America”). Lately, the filmmaker’s been branching out, making films based on other people’s original ideas, and he continues in this vein with the dramatic, romantic comedy “The Threesome.”

But if a movie about a sexual troika gone awry sounds like a bad, broad romantic comedy, keep in mind who the thoughtful filmmaker is here.

Director Chad Hartigan fearlessly leads his intrepid team of actors into the fray with Grae Drake at SXSW 2025. When she asks a question (sort of) in the film ("What is a boring thing about you that you're really proud of?") the group gets very candid very fast. Zoey Deutch, Ruby Cruz, Jonah Hauer-King, and Jaboukie Young-White share the most/least fascinating things about themselves and show how much they love each other. Occasionally they also talk about the film, as well as The Little Mermaid, For All Mankind, the Most watched music videos in the world, and Companion. Also rat tails.

In the film, a young man's perennial crush leads him into an unexpected threesome, he thinks it's his ultimate fantasy come true. When the fantasy ends, all three are left with sobering real-world consequences, to take responsibility for their actions.

Othello, starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, became the highest-grossing play in Broadway history last week, with a total of $2,818,297.00 for eight performances.

The total came as the play is only in its second week of previews and played to 100% capacity. Othello will open Sunday, March 23, for a strictly limited engagement through Sunday, June 8, at the Barrymore Theatre.

The average ticket price last week was $338.09, which was also the highest on Broadway for the week and hundreds of dollars above the next highest price. The prior week, Othello also topped the prices of all other shows with an average ticket price of $361.90. That week, the play grossed $2.6 million across its first seven performances.

The previous record for highest-grossing play was held by Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which grossed $2,718,488 for the holiday week ending Dec. 31, 2023.

A big swing and nearly a miss, Chad Hartigan’s The Threesome is not without its charms even as it can overstay its welcome. A rom-com that offers a more serious tone for characters either in a state of arrested development or a new kind of adulthood that defies labels, it has much in common with Hartigan’s previous films, which live and breathe as hangout movies. His latest, written by Ethan Ogilby, starts to wane as characters continue bantering over the predicament they find themselves in time and again, leading to an awkward balancing act.

The fatal flaw is that lead Connor (Jonah Hauer-King) is too generic––a recording engineer living in Little Rock, Arkansas who appears to be an all-around good guy made for flirty banter. “The Threesome” is quick to establish its rom-com bona fides by opening at a wedding, but like much in Chad Hartigan’s sixth feature, there’s a little something more going on when it sets the stage for a marriage of sensibilities behind the scenes. The director, who is capable of both contemplative dramas (“This Is Martin Bonner”) and raucous comedies (“Morris From America”), tries to strike a balance between screenwriter Ethan Ogilby’s cringe-humor premise of an impromptu ménage à trois and the more serious relationship dynamics it suggests. The results are mixed in ways the filmmakers probably didn’t intend, but they’re at once genuinely intriguing and enormously charming given the talent involved.

The movie stars cinema icons Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds and is available to stream in its entirety on Warner Bros. Classics YouTube channel.City Heat also stars Jane Alexander (The Ring), Madeline Kahn (Clue), Richard Roundtree, and Robert Davi.

The SXSW Film & TV Festival has unveiled the lineup for its 32nd edition, kicking off with the premiere of Apple TV+’s show biz comedy The Studio.

The revival of Our Town, starring Jim Parsons, Zoey Deutch and Katie Holmes, ended its limited run Sunday at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre with its highest gross yet.

The Thornton Wilder revival, directed by Kenny Leon, brought in $1.08 million last and played to 95 percent capacity, with an average ticket price of $134.51. The play opened on Broadway on Oct. 10.

Wicked remained the top grossing show in the industry for the week, bringing in $2.6 million, followed by Hamilton with $1.9 million and Gypsy with $1.89 million. The Great Gatsby brought in $1.85 million as lead Jeremy Jordan celebrated his last week in the show before joining the musical Floyd Collins this spring. The Lion King rounded up the top five with $1.7 million.

As of this writing, it's the number one movie on the platform, and has been for some time.

The voting period for Oscar nominees this year has ended and there might be a surprise for Clint Eastwood fans. While his latest and potentially last film, Juror No. 2, did not make it to anyone’s top 5 prediction list, Academy voters show more interest in the film. The film explores the moral dilemma of a juror when he finds out that he could’ve accidentally killed the victim in the case.

Juror #2 was released on Nov. 1 in a very limited number of theaters. Despite its limited release, it performed well, with a per-screen average of about $7,500 in about 35 theaters during its three-day opening weekend. It would go on to be released in about 50 theaters across the United States.

What's even more impressive is that he continues to put out films even well into his 90s. Eastwood's latest flick, Juror #2, was released in October 2024 to positive critical reviews but less-than-ideal box office returns.
