New Delhi, Sep 3 (Ians) Pakistan skipper Babar Azam’s defensive captaincy against India in the Asia Cup encounter faced criticism from ex-players from both nations as former star pacer Shoaib Akhtar suggested that the Pakistan fast bowler could have bowled a few more overs from one end with spin.
After Shaheen Afridi, who finished with 4-35, and fellow pacer Haris Rauf had India down to 66-4, sensible knocks from Ishan Kishan (82) and Hardik Pandya (87) rallied India to 266 all out. However, the match ended without a result as Pakistan did not get an opportunity to bat due to rain in Pallekele on Saturday.
“Pakistan fast bowling has done wonders. Pakistan should have continued with pacers with short two-over spells from one end and operated spin from only one end. Pakistan should have bowled India out inside 40 overs itself. Pakistan should have capitalized after reducing India to 66-4. Babar Azam needs to...

Mumbai, May 28 (Ians) This is a story narrated by a journalist who had covered India’s tour of Pakistan in the 1980s — when the India-Pakistan rivalry was at its peak in Test cricket.
The tours were also known for sharing off-field bonhomie as the players used to stay in the same hotel, and would spend time together at the end of the day’s play.
In between two Test matches in that tour, a party was organised for the Indian cricketers and visiting journos with liquor flowing like water, despite it being banned in Pakistan.
Suddenly, the entire gathering was in chaos as there was a police raid on the premises and everyone was in a panic as consuming alcohol was a taboo and a grave crime in the Islamic nation.

Before the 2022 T20 World Cup, Bumrah had suffered a back injury, which forced him to miss the mega event in Australia. After months of recovery, the pacer had cleared a match simulation test at the Nca in Bengaluru and was on his way back into the side after being named in the Odi squad for the Sri Lanka series.
However, he experienced discomfort while building up to higher workloads and was withdrawn from India’s Odi squad against Sri Lanka, also getting ruled out from the first two Tests against Sri Lanka.
Notably, medical experts and even the cricketers like Shoaib Akhtar and Michael Holding in the past have called for a change in Bumrah’s bowling action in order to remain injury free and prolong his international career. However, the former India bowling coach doesn’t think so.

New Delhi, Nov 10 (Ians) Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday took a cheeky dig at India men’s cricket team after they suffered a crushing 10-wicket loss to England in the second semifinal of the Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 at the Adelaide Oval.
England openers Jos Buttler (80 not out from 49 balls) and Alex Hales (86 not out from 47) made a chase of 169 look like a walk in the park in the semifinal of the Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, powering their team to the final with a convincing 10-wicket win over India.
This was only the second time India lost in a T20 World Cup game by 10 wickets, and the only ever team to register this unwanted record. Notably, Pakistan had also registered a similar win last year in their T20 World Cup opener in Dubai when the opening pair of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan stitched a 152-run...

Lahore, Nov 3 (Ians) Pakistan captain Babar Azam, former stars Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, and Mohammad Hafeez led the country’s cricket fraternity in condemning the attack on former Prime Minister and cricket legend Imran Khan during his rally in Wazirabad, eastern Pakistan, on Thursday.
A gunman opened fire at a campaign truck carrying Imran Khan, wounding him in both his legs. The gunman was arrested at the scene and no group has claimed responsibility for the shooting.
The attack happened while Imran Khan, who led Pakistan to their first World Cup title in 1992, was leading a protest convoy of his political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (Pti), supporters in Wazirabad and was heading towards the capital, Islamabad, as part of his campaign aimed at forcing the government to hold early elections. Imran is reported to be safe and admitted to a hospital. One person has reportedly died and seven have been wounded in the attack.

Melbourne, Oct 24 (Ians) England quick Mark Wood has insisted he wants to keep pushing the boundaries of his pace bowling after he clocked an average delivery speed of 92.6mph against Afghanistan in the Icc T20 World Cup Super-12 Group 1 match in Perth on October 22.
England thrashed Afghanistan by five wickets in their opening game with Wood having figures of 2/23 even as Sam Curran came up with a record feat, taking five wickets and giving away just 10 runs.
“I wasn’t really aware of how quickly I was bowling,” Wood was quoted as saying by Daly Mail. “I feel I have more in the tank than that. I struggled in my first couple of overs because I was slipping quite a bit.
“Maybe I’ll have to get those long Aussie spikes or something like that. It’s great to hear what speeds I was reaching but I want to keep...

Dubai, Aug 29 (Ians) Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar feels India were trying their best to lose the Asia Cup Group A marquee clash against Pakistan, but Hardik Pandya’s all-round heroics took them over the line in the chase of 148.
Pandya’s all-round skills were the driving force behind India sealing a five-wicket win in an engrossing match against Pakistan. With the ball, he used short deliveries to good effect and got extra bounce as well on a two-paced pitch to break Pakistan’s innings mid-way with his spell of 3-25.
After Pakistan were bowled out for 147, India were in a scenario where 59 runs were needed off the last six overs. From there on, Pandya (33 not out off 17 balls) and Ravindra Jadeja (35 off 29 balls) shared a stand of 52 runs off just 29 balls.

Sydney, June 4 (Ians) Virat Kohli's cricketing brain and Pat Cummins's bag of tricks with the ball make them the best batsman and bowler in world cricket today, said former Australia speedster Brett Lee on Friday. The former Aussie pacer added that World Test Championship final between India and New Zealand this month will be clash of different styles of captaincy.

London, June 4 (Ians) New Zealand will have edge over India in World Test Championship (Wtc) final due to conditions in Southampton being conducive to swing and seam bowling, said former Australia fast bowler Brett Lee. Lee added that team bowling better will eventually win Wtc title.
"I think it is pretty evenly matched there (in batting). From a batting point of view, both sides have got batsmen that can play against swing bowling," said Lee in an interview to International Cricket Council (Icc).

New Delhi, March 29 (Ians) Seventeen years ago this day, swashbuckling batsman Virender Sehwag provided millions of his fans plenty to rejoice as he hammered India's first ever triple Test century in Multan -- and went on to score another triple and missed a third one by a whisker.

Cricket has always had the aura of being an elite sport that stood for values appreciated in different walks of life. This is precisely why it has been a popular game for so long. The players in white amid the village greens, or at the stadium, were looked up to as gritty warriors representing a community, village, city, or a country, all aiming to succeed.
The cricket stars who shone as knights in white armour were revered, loved and idolised from the game's inception to our present-day heroes.
The rules and the playing conditions over years were tweaked to make cricket more attractive and absorbing. Similarly, cricketers' innovation in the art of batting, bowling, fielding, and even field placements has kept the game in motion.
One marvelled at the way W.G. Grace mastered the defensive stroke as well as his lusty hits in front of the wicket.

Kolkata, Feb 9 (Ians) A clinical attacking display helped Chennai City Fc get three points against a ten-man North Eastern Re-Organising Cultural Association (Neroca) Football Club at the Salt Lake Stadium on Tuesday. With this win, Chennai City Fc find themselves in the top half of the table while Neroca remain tenth.
Chennai wasted no time in showing their attacking intent. Vladimir Molerovic took a shot at goal in the fourth minute itself which went above the bar by just a few inches. However, they only had to wait two more minutes to take the lead. Vineeth Kumar was found by an accurate cross by Mohamed Iqbal from the left flank on the far post. New Delhi, Jan 20 (Ians) Former Pakistan players, including the likes of Wasim Akram and Shahid Afridi, have lavished rich praise on the Indian team following their remarkable Test series win over Australia.
On Tuesday, India defeated Australia in the fourth and final Test to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2-1. The Ajinkya Rahane-led side, despite the absence of their regular captain Virat Kohli and other key players, created history by becoming the first team to beat Australia at the Gabba in over 32 years.
"Incredible Test & series win for India. Have not seen a bold, brave & boisterous Asian team on a tougher tour of Australia. No adversity could stop them, frontline players injured, & won after a remarkable turnaround from the depths of 36 all out, inspiring for others. Kudos India," Akram said in a tweet.
"Incredible performance India! Despite so many injuries and setbacks, India have pulled off an astonishing series win.

Lahore, Jan 3 (Ians) Former South Africa captain Ab de Villiers "literally started crying" when he played against Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Asif, according to the latter's former team mate Shoaib Akhtar. Akhtar also said that Indian batting great V.V.S. Laxman was also left clueless by Asif.
"Even bigger than Wasim Akram, the guy that I've seen bowling is Mohammad Asif. I have actually seen batsmen crying while facing Asif. Laxman once said 'how will I face this guy', Ab de Villiers literally started crying during the Asian Test Championship," Akhtar said while speaking on Sports Today.
Akhtar was talking about India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and felt that the latter is the smarest fast bowler after Asif.
"But I think after Asif, Bumrah is the smartest fast bowler presently. People were doubtful about his fitness in Test cricket, even I was watching him closely. He has a quick bouncer,...

New Delhi, Dec 18 (Ians) Following Mohammed Amir's retirement, Shoaib Akhtar has claimed that he too wasn't treated well by the Pakistan Cricket Board (Pcb) management during the 2011 World Cup when he was about to bid adieu to the game.
Amir on Thursday announced his retirement from international cricket, alleging he was "mentally tortured" and that he cannot play under current Pcb management.
Following Amir's retirement, Akhtar posted a video on his YouTube channel and said the 28-year-old should have dealt with the Pcb management by performing well in cricket and not by escaping.
"I openly say that I was not treated well during the 2011 World Cup, not by Shahid Afridi but by the rest of the management. I am saying it openly. I was harassed but I didn't care as I had already announced my retirement," Akhtar, who retired after the 2011 World Cup, said.
