South Australian Anthony Frith’s close encounter with “Sharknado” prodco The Asylum in “Mockbuster” is among five handpicked titles to be showcased at the Adelaide Film Festival Goes to Cannes showcase, held at Cannes Marché du Film on May 17.
The five works in progress range from queer adult anime, comedic doc, and traditional non-fiction to family dramas, helmed mostly by newcomers, and reflect the dynamic filmmaking community of Southern Australia, set to tempt potential co-financiers in Cannes.
So far two titles have received international backing. “Mockbuster” has been pre-sold to Giant Pictures and Drafthouse Films for North America, on top of domestic distribution in Australia via Umbrella Entertainment; Kelly Schilling’s drama “With or Without You,” handled locally by Icon Film Distribution, has been picked up by global sales agent LevelK.

Vice, Screen Australia, and the Australian International Documentary Conference (Aidc) have selected four finalists for the $50,000 documentary funding initiative, Pitch Australiana.
Pitch Australiana provides early career Australian filmmakers an opportunity to collaborate with Vice in telling a story that speaks to communities, individuals, perspectives and subcultures that are overlooked or ignored in mainstream media.
The winner of this year’s competition will secure $50,000 of funding for a short-form documentary to be released on Vice.com as part of the digital documentary series Australiana which is seen in 35 countries, as well as airing on Sbs Viceland.
Finalists will compete for the prize in a pitching session in front of a panel that includes representatives from Vice, Screen Australia and the wider documentary community. This live pitch session will take place on March 4 during Aidc 2020 in Melbourne.

The International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (Idfa) has crowned its 2019 award winners. The respected doc event named Heidi Hassan and Patricia Pérez Fernández’s In A Whisper as best feature-length documentary. The pic, which centers on two emigrated Cuban filmmakers whose passion for film, friendship, and freedom reunites them after years apart, takes a $22,000 prize. This year, for the first time at Idfa, three new awards were presented in the competition for feature-length documentary: best directing went to Mehrdad Oskouei for his film Sunless Shadows; the best editing and cinematography prizes went to Sander Vos and Maasja Ooms respectively for their work on Punks. Elsewhere, Lucy Parker won the best first appearance award for her film Soldiarity, the Fipresci Award was given to Alyx Ayn Arumpac for Aswang, and the award for best mid-length doc went to Jalal Vafaei for Anticlockwise.
