He appeared in several Abercrombie & Fitch catalogues and had a notable appearance on American Idol in 2004. Following this, he decided to pursue a career on the screen that relied on more than his looks.
It was landing the role of Arthur Curry, Aka Aquaman, in Smallville, a year later that kick started his rise to prominence. Following subsequent appearances on hit shows like CSI: Miami and 90210, Ritchson eventually found his way to being cast in lead roles. Released theatrically on October 18, 2024, A24's We Live in Time is a decade-spanning romantic drama starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh. The story concerns an elliptical ten-year romance between Tobias (Garfield) and Almut (Pugh) after randomly crossing paths one fateful day and the profound impact the latter's cancer diagnosis has had on their lives since. Aside from a few romantic dramedy trappings, the nonlinear storytelling and undeniable electricity between Garfield and Pugh have led to critical acclaim.

After the release of the romance drama We Live in Time, Andrew Garfield revealed how he has dealt with the grief of losing his own parent in an interview with Elmo on Sesame Street. In 2019, his mother, Lynn Garfield, passed away due to pancreatic cancer. Garfield went on the kid-orientated show to reflect upon the emotions that formed after Lynn's death, and how it's okay to mourn someone you loved.
In a video interview released on Sesame Street's YouTube channel, Garfield discussed how he had been thinking about his mother as of late. In the emotionally-charged conversation, the actor explains how "Its actually kind of okay to miss somebody. He goes on to say that because one is sad and grieving over a lost life, those very feelings are simply proof of the love shared between them. One of the loveliest things about watching a film like We Live in Time is watching life being lived. Director John Crowley and writer Nick Payne paint a heartwarming, often humorous, and moving picture of a couple whose love for each other simply exists. Between work and caring for a child, illness, and growing a relationship, the romantic drama is a captivating, tear-jerking experience. Its gentle and warm, like listening to waves on the beach. It lulls us into the comforts of a seemingly endless love, but its decades-spanning and non-chronological storytelling reminds us that life can always be unexpected.

Andrew Garfield‘s onscreen chemistry with Florence Pugh might have been a little too palpable.
As the Golden Globe winner discussed their new movie We Live in Time on Friday at 92Ny, he recalled shooting a “very intimate, passionate sex scene” with Pugh on a closed set, which made cinematographer Stuart Bentley turn away.
“The scene becomes passionate, as we choreographed it,” he said in a clip from the appearance. “And we get into it as it were, and we go a little bit further than we were meant to because we didn’t hear ‘cut’ and it’s feeling safe. And we’re just kinda like, ‘Ok, we’ll just go into the next thing, we’ll let this progress, and we’ll just carry on.’
Garfield continued, “And at a certain point, both of us, we’re both kind of telepathically saying to each other, ‘This definitely feels like a longer take.

Andrew Garfield worked his way through a self-proclaimed midlife crisis thanks to his upcoming rom-dram, We Live in Time, in which he stars alongside co-star Florence Pugh. Coming on the heels of its world premiere earlier this month at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Garfield is now promoting the tear-jerking love story in Spain at the 72nd San Sebastin International Film Festival. And while speaking about the film on Saturday (September 28), Garfield admitted facing a very real midlife crisis (per Variety):
When I read [the screenplay], I was in deep contemplation of the meaning of life. As always, but maybe more pronounced in that moment. I was thinking about life, death, love, meaning, time standing at the age of 39 and 40, kind of a midlife crisis, looking forward, looking backward, looking exactly where I am, and thinking, What now?'

At one point, it seemed as if creative movie marketing had vanished from the mainstream, only to be found for films with lower budgets. This makes sense. Films for a big audience cannot have a marketing campaign that is too specific; they need to target the general public. But in recent years, audiences have seen a notable return to marketing in a way we have not seen in a while. The beauty of love stories is that they are a universal language known to us all. It almost doesnt matter what fashion you present them in if the classic ingredients come together as they should. Director John Crawleys We Live in Time, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, is aware of its strengths and projects them within a non-linear concoction where actors Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield will both warm your heart in the face of a union that has a definite end date.
Even in the unorthodox way the film is presented, you know a specific type of finality is coming. But sometimes, taking a more tried and true approach is best served when you have the confidence to do so.

This article contains spoilers for The Watch episodes 7 and 8.
Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books have long been fantasy favorites. In fact, the CEO of Motive Pictures, a UK company planning to adapt a huge number of Pratchett’s novels for television, called Discworld “a national treasure.” But with the recent lackluster reception of BBC America’s The Watch, can television adaptations both succeed in live-action serial storytelling and live up to the expectations of Pratchett fans?
Although the last two episodes of The Watch manage to redeem some of the earlier missteps of the season, there are reasons why the program never quite lived up to the expectations of Discworld fans. The punk-rock atmosphere of Ankh-Morpork was off-putting to many, and the jarring technological levels seemed at once futuristic and anachronistic.
In part, this felt due to a lower budget than a show trying to draw fans of other huge fantasy properties,...

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Season 1 finale of BBC America’s “The Watch.”)
The first season of BBC America’s “The Watch” ended on a huge cliffhanger on Sunday when Captain Sam Vimes (Richard Dormer) is teleported into the Observers’ realm. That’s after Wonse (Bianca Simone Mannie) teams up with them, having turned on The Watch after history is rewritten to make everyone believe she’s the one who committed Carcer’s (Sam Adewunmi) crimes — including the summoning of the Noble Dragon.
The series, which is inspired by Terry Pratchett’s “Discworld” fantasy novels, has yet to be picked up for a second season. But if and when it does, Adam Hugill, who plays The Watch member Constable Carrot, said the twist at the end of Season 1 “changes everything” moving forward.

The amount of literary content German authors Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were able to publish during the early to mid-19th century has given Hollywood a seemingly bottomless trove of imaginative narratives to pull from. Inspiration from these more than 200 fairy tales was used, for example, to produce six seasons of the NBC fantasy police procedural “Grimm.”
A prolific writer himself, late English novelist and satirist Terry Pratchett may not be as referenced in the mainstream film and TV industry as much as the Brothers Grimm, but with 41 books in his flat-planet “Discworld” series alone, there’s plenty for BBC America to borrow and re-envision, including its own fantasy cop show, “The Watch.” As a cyberpunk interpretation of Pratchett’s original text, however, the new series likely won’t create many more fans of mythical storytelling. In fact, the show’s generic worldbuilding, one-dimensional characterizations and lack of consistent wit...

BBC America has launched a teaser trailer for the upcoming fantasy-comedy series ‘The Watch’ (loosely) based on Terry Pratchett’s novel.
Based on the late author’s City Watch subset of his Discworld novels, The Watch follows a group of misfit cops, led by steampunk vigilante Sam Vimes (Richard Dormer), as they attempt to save their corrupt city from unruly crime and the mythical creatures wreaking havoc in it.
Richard Dormer will be starring as Sam Vimes, Captain of the Watch, Jo Eaton-Kent as Constable Cheery, a forensics expert ostracised by her own kin, and Adam Hugil as Constable Carrot, the idealistic new recruit raised by dwarves.
Marama Corlett (Sick Note), Lara Rossi (Cheat) and Sam Adewunmi (Stan Lee’s Lucky Man), Anna Chancellor (Pennyworth), James Fleet (Outlander), Ingrid Oliver (Doctor Who), Ruth Madeley (Years and Years), Hakeem Kae-Kazim (Deep State), and Bianca Simone Mannie (Homeland) also star.

Make no mistake: The Watch is inspired by Terry Pratchett’s Discworld offshoot series, The City Watch, but the BBC America series is very much its own animal, much the way Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency took its own direction from Douglas Adams’ novel on the same network. However, if the trailer coming out of New York Comic-Con’s virtual panel is any indication, there’s plenty of chaotic fun to be had in this version of the story.
The eight episodes of The Watch‘s inaugural season will follow recognizable characters such as City Watch Captain Sam Vimes (Richard Dormer), the last scion of nobility Lady Sybil Ramkin (Lara Rossi), the naïve but heroic Carrot (Adam Hugill), the mysterious Angua (Marama Corlett), the ingenious non-binary forensics expert Cheery (Jo Eaton-Kent), the dictatorial Lord Vetinari (Anna Chancellor), and Pratchett’s iconic personification of Death voiced by Wendell Pierce.

Pennyworth’s Anna Chancellor and Outlander’s James Fleet have joined the cast of BBC America’s The Watch, based on Sir Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels.
The pair are the latest actors to join the BBC Studios and Narrativia-produced series, joining lead Richard Dormer.
Chancellor stars as Lord Vetinari, The Patrician of Ankh-Morpork, and architect of the city’s normalized wrongness and ramshackle system of governance, while Fleet stars as The Archchancellor, wizard, magical advisor, and the Head of the Unseen University.
