Since its inception, Apple TV+ has become an increasingly popular streaming service, boasting highly reviewed movies and series like Severance, Ted Lasso, and Blitz. But, one of the service’s best shows is an overlooked dramedy centered on a young British couple in Camden.
Trying focuses on Nikki and Jason — played by Esther Smith and Rafe Spall, respectively — as they realize that they will not be able to have children biologically, and instead decide to pursue adoption. While the plot may sound like a bit of a snooze-fest, the show manages to be both endearing and funny, with a variety of chaotic developments and supporting characters.

Hold Your Breath has a lot going for it. There are horror elements that give it an unsettling touch; the dust storms that permeate the film help in that regard. There are hints of the gray man, a figure that comes and goes, slipping through cracks in the door and windows with a threat of possession and fear. And theres a central story of a mothers grief, which pushes her toward an unraveling that puts her daughters in harms way. But all of these elements dont come together cohesively or meaningfully. Worse, parts of the film are confusing and strange.

Annaleigh Ashford is a mother slowly succumbing to the challenges of her time and environment in Hold Your Breath. Ashford primarily spent the first decade of her career working on Broadway, working on everything from Wicked to Legally Blonde: The Musicals, Heathers: The Musical and Rent. The Tony winner would begin expanding her career to the screen with her key role in Showtime's Masters of Sex, going on to balance her roles between screen and stage with everything from The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story to B Positive, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Welcome to Chippendales, which earned her an Emmy nomination.
Ashford stars in Hold Your Breath as Esther Smith, a mother of two children in 1930s Oklahoma who has fallen on hard times, generally being pitied by her local neighbors for her emotional struggles in the wake of her husband's death.

Plot: In 1930s Oklahoma amid the region’s horrific dust storms, a woman is convinced that a sinister presence is threatening her family.
Review: I always love it when horror uses a real-life backdrop for horrific events. I didn’t know much about the Dust Bowl in Oklahoma in the 1930s outside of its impact on crops and farmers. So to see it recontextualized as a man-made disaster brings a modern sensibility to this period piece. The dust storms bring both isolation and insanity as the lack of food and hope starts to take hold. Hold Your Breath is a bleak look at a very difficult time in American History. But it’s also a very stereotypical horror film about a woman’s descent into madness.

Crafting the perfect TV family can be tricky. Most thrive off dysfunction — everything from “Arrested Development” to its genre-bent counterpart “Succession” — while many focus instead on found family among friends, coworkers, or community. At least one on-air drama is about the perils of inbreeding and bad communication between loved ones, so we wouldn’t exactly call it a family show.
In classic sitcoms starting with “Leave it to Beaver,” there was the idea of the model family (passed down so overtly as to inspire a “Boy Meets World” episode literally called “Model Family” that explicitly sites the Cleavers). From “Family Ties” to “Full House” to “Sister Sister,” the nuclear family was the beating heart of a TV show, with a kind of wholesome chemistry and dynamic that sometimes feels lost now.
But like every TV genre, the family comedy is alive, thriving, and evolving — perhaps nowhere as brilliantly as Apple’s “Trying,...

Much like “Hannibal,” it’s difficult to believe a show as spooky and complex as “Evil” ever aired on network television. But as the horror series about an unlikely trio investigating reports of demonic incidents for the Catholic Church debuts its entertaining final season on Paramount+, where the Robert and Michelle King-created series moved in Season 2, it’s also hard to believe the show exists anywhere, as it remains wholly unlike anything else on TV.
In Season 4, the first episode of which is now streaming, the series continues to balance its unique cases of the week with storylines involving overarching mythology, all while engaging with and exploring the personal beliefs and fears of Kristen (Katja Herbers), David (Mike Colter) and Ben (Aasif Mandvi). And then there’s that little issue of the antichrist and the fact it’s Kristen’s biological child. All of these things come together nicely...

Every parent will tell you time really does fly. As the cliche goes, one minute they are in diapers; the next, they are asking to borrow your car keys.
For its fourth season, the Apple TV+ series Trying leans into that adage. When viewers last left Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall), they formally adopted their two foster children Princess, age 10, and her brother Tyler, age six.
But when Trying returns for a fourth season on May 22, the series leaps forward six years. Princess (Scarlett Rayner) is now a 16-year-old teenager learning to drive and very curious about her birth mother. Tyler (Cooper Turner), now 12, is struggling to find friends and fit in. Nikki’s uptight sister Karen (Sian Brooke) discovered she was pregnant in the third season finale. Now that baby is six years old.

Trying, AppleTV+'s best show, is set to return with two new episodes on May 22nd, followed by weekly releases until July 3rd. The series follows Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) as they struggle with their fertility and, eventually, the adoption process, as aided by their ensemble of hilarious friends and family. The third season was well-received, despite the absence of Imelda Staunton as their councillor Penny, having been busy playing Queen Elizabeth II in the final two seasons of The Crown at the time of filming. Instead, the third season focused more on the adopted children, Princess and Tyler, played by Eden Togwell and Mickey McAnulty respectively.

Apple TV+‘s sweetest family comedy Trying is coming back with a bit of a time jump as parents Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) deal with the growing pains of teen children. After officially adopting Princess and Tyler in Season 3—which saw the couple finally tie the knot—Nikki and Jason are six years into their marriage and parenting journey. And while their close-knit unit is solid, lingering questions direct them and their kids down some adventurous paths in Season 4. “We are six years ahead, which is quite a rare time jump in television in the comedic world,” Spall tells TV Insider. “And Princess is now a teenager and our son, Tyler, is 11. And obviously, having a teenager and kids at that age presents a lot of challenges in conventional families.” Both Princess and Tyler are played by new older actors, Scarlett Rayner and Cooper Turner. There is a lot to love about Apple TV+'s Trying. The comedy centers around a couple and their choice to grow their family despite their fertility issues. Though the topic can be serious and emotional, the main characters of Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) keep the story light and funny despite the subject. As they navigate the complexities of adoption and the highs and lows that are involved, they are surrounded by supportive friends and family, but what makes the show great is the relationship between series leads. What's so unique about them is that neither Jason nor Nikki truly have their life together, but their loving relationship makes up for that. Though their hearts are always in the right place, these characters have a habit of getting into strange situations, but they are always there for each other, and now their children, Princess (played by Eden Togwell...

Apple TV's Trying is a heartwarming series following Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) as they try to grow their family. After fertility issues, the couple turns to adoption to fulfill their dream of being parents, but to get their family, they must juggle the various obstacles that arise. Fortunately, they have the constant support of their families and friends. Showing off the lives of well-meaning people who just don't have everything together, the series creates fascinating characters to populate Nikki and Jason's lives, from Nikki's overconfident coworker Jen (Robyn Cara) to Jason's quiet but caring father Vic (Phil Davis). However, one of the quirkiest examples is constantly overlooked. Nikki's brother-in-law, Scott Filburt (Darren Boyd), is unjustly the butt of every joke.

The long-term partners decided they finally wanted to get married, but rather than get hitched before people knew they were pregnant, they wanted to tie the knot before their kids were taken away from them. Luckily, Nikki and Jason won their court case against their adopted children’s biological grandmother, and with that out of the way, all their worries were over.

Season 4 brings a fresh set of family matters, as the story jumps six years into...

Jason (Rafe Spall) and Nikki's (Esther Smith) path to becoming parents hasn't been the easiest.
When Trying Season 3 Episode 1 kicked off, the pair had Princess and Tyler under their roof.
However, Tyler was never meant to be there, and the social worker made a plan to collect him at the end of the day.
When Jason and Nikki's families got wind of this, they joined forces to help prove the couple could be parents to two children.
Ultimately, the social worker relented, and they get to keep Princess and Tyler ... for now.
They have three months to prove they are capable parents.
I asked Spall and Smith whether they thought this would hang over James and Nikki like a dark cloud.
"They want to make the best out of it. They want to prove to themselves that they can be as good parents as possible," Rafe shared with TV Fanatic,...
