All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 28 to cast their 2021 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for programs. Unlike the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally. In the past, voters were limited in the number of programs that they could put forth. Four years ago that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted.

While the comedy and drama series ballots have each maintained an average of over 100 entrants in recent years, there have nearly always been fewer than 40 choices in the limited series genre. There are 37 shows on the list this year, which is down by four from last year. There were 35 in 2019, 33 in 2018, and 25 in 2017. Five series from the list below will make the cut and be announced as Emmy nominees on July 13.

But with the kind of crowd-pleasing, popcorn-ready films that the MTV awards show normally celebrates mostly delayed due to the pandemic, TV has taken a front seat this year.

In fact, determined viewers could consume the entire season in one sitting. And, after doing just that, we here at E! News are split on whether or not Behind Her Eyes deserved six hours of our time. The series, which is based on Sarah Pinborough's 2017 novel, follows single mom Louise (Brown) as she begins an affair with her boss, David (Bateman) and befriends his mysterious wife, Adele (Hewson). As one of the protagonists of Behind Her Eyes, Louise (Simona Brown) played a pivotal role in the series' plot. She was a single mother who developed romantic feelings for a man she met at a bar. He turned out to be her new boss, David Ferguson (Tom Bateman), at the clinic she works at. While David also loves her, he is married to Adele Ferguson (Eve Hewson), who ends up becoming Louise's friend.

Unable to tell either David or Adele about her connection with their spouse, she finds herself in a complicated relationship. While she comes off as a traitor to Adele, who sees her as her only friend, there were more things about Louise that the audience actually pitied.

As Louise's (Simona Brown) friend Sophie (Nichola Burley) puts it, Adele Ferguson (Eve Hewson) is described as a typical "madwoman in the attic." In the first episode of Behind Her Eyes, it is revealed that Adele has just moved to central London along with her husband, David Ferguson, who is a psychiatrist.

She is known to be from an extremely wealthy family. She says she never had to work in her life and that her parents owned an estate, but she spends most of her time staying at home. Despite Adele manipulating the people around her and often playing the victim, there are several instances when viewers felt sad for her.

If you haven't already watched Behind Her Eyes, Netflix's adaptation of Sarah Pinborough's 2018 novel, then I recommend you turn back now, because I'm about to spoil the hell out of the big "twist" at the end of the series. If there's one compliment we could give the show, it's that it's a faithful remake of the book, aside from some minute details that don't alter the story too much. The show keeps the book's most vital plot points, which unfortunately includes the story's twisted finale. This six-episode series follows a single mother, Louise (Simona Brown) as she balances entering an affair with her boss David (Tom Bateman) and striking up a close friendship with his wife Adele (Eve Hewson). However, not all is as it appears, and Louise finds herself pulled into a tangled mystery that is darker than she ever could have imagined. The premise is solid, if not the most original, but the series as a whole misses the mark so widely you wonder...

If you’ve already made your way through all six episodes of Netflix’s highly unsettling, fiendishly addictive British psychological thriller Behind Her Eyes… well, we have a lot to discuss, don’t we?

Behind Her Eyes is the perfect duplicity-hinting title for a series that conceals what it is until the very end. The name works both for the psychological adultery thriller that this Netflix adaptation presents as, and for the supernatural story it’s really telling.

Because what’s behind her eyes, in this instance, is him. She is beautiful, wealthy Scottish heiress Adele, played by The Luminaries’ Eve Hewson. He is working class, Glaswegian heroin addict Rob, played by Game of Thrones’ Robert Aramayo. They meet as teenagers at rehab after the death of Adele’s parents, and realise that they share the ability for their souls to leave their bodies while they sleep and ‘travel’ to other places to spy on other people’s lives.

Some TV adaptations are so far removed from their written inspiration that it's hard for readers to identify any similar plot lines - this is not the case of Behind Her Eyes. Save for one majorly ill-conceived change, the suspenseful miniseries is perhaps one of the most faithful adaptations Netflix has made as of late. Sarah Pinborough's 2018 novel takes readers inside a complex love triangle between a married couple and a woman who finds herself drawn to each partner in different ways. Netflix's version tells the story of Louise (Simona Brown), Adele (Eve Hewson), and David (Tom Bateman) in a similar fashion to the book, but with slight tweaks - here are the major differences.

Pressing play on the first episode of “Behind Her Eyes,” all I knew was that there was going to be a capital-t Twist that may or may not cause me to lose what’s left of my mind. In fact, the ending of the Sarah Pinborough novel that the Netflix series is based on was originally marketed to readers with ominous subway ads warning people “Don’T Trust This Book” and the performatively astonished hashtag, “#WTFThatEnding.” Short of Googling it, though, I could never have guessed just how ridiculous That Ending was until I got to see it with my own two bewildered eyes.

Behind Her Eyes is an intense watch as it explores heavy themes like obsession, drug abuse, mental illness, and lucid dreaming. It follows the story of married couple David (Tom Bateman) and Adele (Eve Hewson), who end up intertwined in a relationship with David's coworker Louise (played by Simona Brown). At first, it appears to be your very average TV storyline about a man in an unhappy marriage who cheats on his wife and can't seem to stop himself. Very quickly, though, you realize that there's more to David and Adele's marriage than meets the eye, and you begin to worry about Louise and her involvement. As it turns out, that's for good reason.

While Louise and Adele develop an oddly comfortable friendship relatively early on in the six-part series, you do start to wonder if somehow Adele might know that Louise is the one sleeping with her husband when she's not around.

Netflix psychological thriller Behind Her Eyes, adapted from Sarah Pinborough’s hit novel of the same name, sets its cast an unenviably tough task (and not just because almost everyone’s having to do a regional accent). Through subtleties and shifts in their performances, Eve Hewson, Tom Bateman, Simona Brown and Robert Aramayo need to keep the audience invested while keeping us guessing. What is it we’re watching? Is this six-part series the tale of Adele and David’s brittle marriage and the secrets that bind them? Or the story of single-mother Louise (Simona Brown) getting in over her head with this glamorous new couple? Could it be something else entirely?

Netflix has debuted a new trailer for the upcoming series ‘Behind Her Eyes’.

Based on the best-selling book by Sarah Pinborough and written by Steve Lightfoot, the 6 episode series follows single mother Louise, Since her husband walked out, Louise has made her son her world, supporting them both with her part-time job in a psychiatrist’s office. Her world is thrown off-kilter when she begins an affair with her new boss David and matters take an even stranger turn when she’s drawn into an unlikely friendship with his wife Adele. Netflix has set the cast for “Behind Her Eyes,” a psychological thriller from Left Bank Pictures, producer of “The Crown.”

Simona Brown (“The Night Manager”) and Eve Hewson (“The Knick”) have signed on to the six-part series, which is an adaptation of a bestselling novel by Sarah Pinborough. Tom Bateman (“Vanity Fair”) and Robert Aramayo (“Game of Thrones”) will also star. Erik Richter Strand (“Valkyrien”) will direct the whole series. Eliza Mellor is producing.

Brown plays Louise, a single mother who has an affair with her psychiatrist boss, David (Bateman). When she later befriends his wife, Adele (Hewson), she becomes caught in a web of secrets and lies.

The foursome have joined the cast of the drama, which has started principal photography and is produced by The Crown producer Left Bank. It shoots in Scotland and London and is an adaptation of Sarah Pinborough’s eponymous novel, which was published by Harper Collins in the UK in 2017 and by Flatiron Books in the U.S.

The series is created for television and written by Hannibal and The Punisher writer Steve Lightfoot with Valkyrien’s Erik Richter Strand directing all six episodes.
