As a big fan of both found-footage horror movies and anthology horror movies, I have always loved the V/H/S series of films. They’ve introduced genre fans to some fantastic new directors, while also featuring fantastic shorts from some of the best horror directors going. There’s been so many great segments and it seems like a great idea to make this seventh instalment a little more science fiction-influenced.
There are six segments this time around. The start is obviously part of the wraparound and introduces a documentary about UFOs and aliens.
The first segment in V/H/S Beyond proper is titled ‘Stork’ from director Jordan Downey and is based on artwork by Oleg Vdovenko.

The seventh instalment in the long-running found footage franchise, V/H/S/Beyond, sees the series change its focus somewhat, from straight forward horror to a science fiction/horror hybrid. While it doesn’t quite follow Jason and the Leprechaun into space, most of the segments do involve aliens or other sci-fi elements.
Directed by Jay Cheel the film’s wraparound “Abduction, Adduction” begins that trend as Mitch Horowitz, host of Alien Encounters: Fact or Fiction, hosts an investigation of a pair of VHS tapes allegedly found at a flea market, and said to be proof of alien visitation.
That segues into “Stork”, directed by Jordan Downey who co-wrote it with Kevin Stewart based on artwork by Oleg Vdovenko.

As a fan of anthology films, I have really come to get excited every fall, since we have gotten a new V/H/S film every year for the past few years, and it’s a tradition that I hope will continue. This series is one of my favorites, consistently delivering fun, creative entries from a variety of different creative talents. V/H/S/Beyond shifts gears a bit and brings six horror shorts with a sci-fi bend. Aliens, body horror, and strange phenomena abound, along with musical numbers, fly through the air at breakneck speeds with some gnarly special effects. It’s pretty freaking great!

In the 12 years since the release of its flagship film, the V/H/S franchise has spawned six sequels, a pair of spinoffs, and a forgotten miniseries (released exclusively on Snapchat). Following last year's V/H/S/85, the latest installment in the found-footage horror series is V/H/S/Beyond, a collection of segments based on aliens and featuring some of the franchise's best and gnarliest special effects to date.
Presented as a fake documentary about aliens, each segment of V/H/S/Beyond is broken up by talking-head interviews with experts, including a longtime believer and scholar and a trio of YouTubers who specialize in visual effects and make a living by debunking purported UFO footage. That ideological balance is thoughtful if somewhat extraneous in a horror anthology whose primary goal is to maximize thrills and chills, as Beyond often does.
Beyond Begins with 3 Quick & Fun Face-Melting Entries

“V/H/S/Beyond” makes its world premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas on September 20. But the most exciting segment in Shudder’s latest horror anthology sequel is the franchise’s first filmed in India.
Directed by Virat Pal, “Dream Girl” follows two paparazzi when they sneak behind the scenes on the set of a Bollywood movie. The celebrity chasers discover consequences for their so-called “found footage” way worse than trespassing charges when they find superstar Tara (Namrata Sheth) waiting in her trailer. You can watch an exclusive clip from the movie above.
Anthologies help find new talent across genres, but “V/H/S/Beyond” is the latest in a string of horror movies that have proven essential to expanding perspectives in the genre. Pal, who studied advertising at Mumbai University and later attended UCLA, worked for Google before launching his film career directing shorts like “The Bells,” “Facelift,” and “Night of the Bride.”

The V/H/S franchise returns with another spooky entry, this time with a sci-fi twist. Here’s the V/H/S/Beyond trailer.
The V/H/S films can be a bit of a mixed bag, which can be said for any anthology franchise, but they are a film studio’s dream – low budget horror which is popular on the home media market.
V/H/S/Beyond, the sixth film in the franchise, comes with a sci-fi twist and the short synopsis for V/H/S/Beyond reads as follows:
Dive into a sci-fi nightmare with six chilling tapes that push the limits of fear.

If that wasn't enough to get you excited, maybe the folks involved will be. Perhaps most prominent among the list of names involved with this new entry is Mike Flanagan, the modern horror master whose credits include "The Haunting of Hill House," "Doctor Sleep," "Oculus," and the most recent "The Fall of the House of Usher." Flanagan isn't directing, though — instead, he wrote a segment that will be helmed by his wife Kate Siegel, who has appeared in the majority of Flanagan's films and TV shows.

After exploring the 90s in the previous two entries, V/H/S/85, the sixth(!) entry in the V/H/S franchise, throws things back to the decade where VHS ruled the roost – once again using the found-footage format to tell a handful of spooky stories from directors David Bruckner, Scott Derrickson, Gigi Saul Guerrero, Natasha Kermani, and Mike P. Nelson.
After a brief flick through 80s television, replete with a pause on an Unsolved Mysteries-style show called Total Copy, which tells the story of Rory a test subject at Stamer University, to open proceedings. A show that the film returns to throughout its running time before wrapping things up in traditional anthology fashion and revealing Rory’s connection to the shorts we’ve just watched.

V/H/S/85 dropped on Shudder on October 6 and is receiving tons of positive buzz. The sixth installment of the decade-spanning found footage horror anthology franchise features stories about a vicious family of cultists, a demonic earthquake in Mexico, and videotapes that showcase murders before they actually occur. This time around, filmmaker David Bruckner tackles the wrap-around story. Bruckner has helmed several features, including The Night House and Hulu's Hellraiser, in addition to directing the infamous short "Amateur Night" from the very first V/H/S.
Bruckner's wraparound story for V/H/S/85, dubbed "Total Copy," plays out like a faux documentary, telling the story of a group of scientists examining an unknown being that is able to replicate things it sees. David Bruckner recently sat down with Cbr for an exclusive chat, where the filmmaker discussed the hardships of working with practical effects while still abiding by found footage rules, the Paperclip Maximizer theory,...

If the above image doesn’t make it abundantly clear, director Scott Derrickson brings a rather bloody, violent segment to V/H/S/85 with “Dreamkill.”
Derrickson, who needs no introduction, recently directed the horror blockbuster The Black Phone for Blumhouse and previously helmed horror favorites like The Exorcism of Emily Rose. With “Dreamkill,” Derrickson and writing partner C. Robert Cargill evoke the gritty horror of their nightmarish feature Sinister. It fits right at home with the grainy textured horrors packaged in V/H/S/85, one of the most cohesive installments of the popular anthology franchise yet.
That’s not a surprise to the director, who spoke with Bloody Disgusting about V/H/S/85 after the film’s Fantastic Fest debut.
“I think it’s inevitable that the film as a whole would come out looking the way that it does because you’re talking about VHS materials at the very early stages of its consumer usage,...

Just in time for the spooky Halloween season comes another gory horror film that will shake you to the core. Aside from the very different but acclaimed film Lola, V/H/S/85 is possibly the best found footage movie of the year. Who else grew up watching '80s and '90s movies via the O.G. Vcr? The V/H/S franchise kicked off in 2012 and has spawned both sequels and spinoffs, capitalizing on the retro nostalgia of analog video. V/H/S/85 is the best one since V/H/S/94 (2021), effectively weaving in contemporary events and relentless humor (in a good way) in addition to the expected gory violence.
We recently caught up with the pair of directors whose storylines aren't just "one and done," as each resurfaces at least once during the tight duration of V/H/S/85. David Bruckner (Hellraiser) helms the framing segment, which helps keep the overall movie going, while Mike Nelson (Wrong Turn...

This year’s Blood List has named the 13 best genre scripts around town, and in its sixth year the annual screenplay contest is expanding its scope to include hot books, TV pilots, and young scribes ripe for signing. Taking top honors in 2014 is sci-fi thriller Bird Box from The Thing and Final Destination 5 scribe Eric Heisserer, an apocalyptic tale of a woman trying to lead her children to safety – all three blindfolded – after monsters descend on earth that turn people insane on sight. Universal set Heisserer to adapt the manuscript from Josh Malerman in 2013 for Mama helmer Andy Muschietti. Previous Blood List alumni include Black Swan, Stoker, Warm Bodies, and the upcoming Blumhouse thriller The Boy Next Door.
Like the Black List naming the top unproduced screenplays circulating around Hollywood, the genre-focused Blood List taps exec votes to determine each year’s best unmade horror, sci-fi, and thriller scripts.
