Jane Austen
Best Jane Austen Adaptations on Screen So Far
Jane Austen
Kayti Burt Feb 26, 2020

With Emma and Sanditon making waves (seaside resort pun!), we're listing up the best screen adaptations of Jane Austen's work.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that every Jane Austen novel must be adapted an infinite amount of times and we will be grateful for all of them.

There have been a lot of adaptations of Jane Austen's six major novels and some of her other works, including the recently-released Emma starring Anya Taylor-Joy. These are the ones we recommend watching.

Best Pride and Prejudice Adaptations

Easily the most adapted of Jane Austen's works, Pride and Prejudice is a foundational work in the broader romantic comedy genre and in so much of our mainstream storytelling. People tend to have opinions about which of the P&p adaptations are the best. (Who is the best Elizabeth? Who is the best Darcy? Which is the most faithful? Does it matter?...

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and 10 Other Adaptations That Jane Austen Never Would Have Anticipated
Jane Austen
The love story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy has been told again and again onscreen, and each adaptation has in its own way addressed themes of class, social etiquette and romance that Jane Austen wove into the 1813 classic, Pride and Prejudice. But now Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, in theaters Feb. 5, introduces a whole new slew of themes: the undead, for example, and martial arts and lots and lots of blood and gore. The film has Cinderella star Lily James playing Elizabeth, who in this version just happens to be leading a small army of sword-toting society women in...

2014 Streamy Award Nominees Announced
The nominees for the 4th annual Streamy Awards—acknowledging explemplary, original online video content—have been announced. “If the caliber of this year’s nominees is any indication, we’re on track for the biggest Streamys ever,” said executive producer Drew Baldwin, co-founder of Streamy Awards presenting partner Tubefilter, in a statement. At the forefront of the nominations was the Emmy-winning “Pride and Prejudice”-inspired Web series “The Lizzie Bennet Diaries,” which landed a best drama nomination as well as taps for two of its actors: Daniel Vincent Gordh and Ashley Clements. It’s a good year for the series that was picked up by Starz Digital Media in June. Well-known Viner Brittany Furlan also received three nods including best actress in a Web series comedy for “Shfty ~ Super Happy Fun Time, Yay!,” best Vine comedian, and Viner of the year. Fellow Viner Klarity, also on “Shfty,” was recognized in...

Reviewing 5 Popular Web Series Based on Books
1. The Lizzie Bennet Diaries. A runaway success that sparked a veritable wave of web adaptations of romantic novels and stories, this Emmy-winning series is inventive, romantic, and beautifully executed. Ashley Clements and Daniel Vincent Gordh (particularly the former) handled their iconic Lizzie/Darcy roles with aplomb, and the series pulled a particular coup by casting Mary Kate Wiles as Lydia and reshaping her story as that of a party girl who gets hurt and slowly grows up over the course of the series. The interactions between sisters Lizzie, Lydia, and Jane (Laura Spencer), are warm and real and the highlight of the series along with the slowly-built-up Darcy/Lizzie romance.

The main flaw in the series is that it’s too long – the first 50 episodes chronicle every event that happens in the book, and while book purists might call this praiseworthy, this is a web-series not a BBC adaptation, and...

'Dark Knight Legacy': Nolan-Verse Continues In Epic Fan Film
by Brett White

While we have to wait a few more years to find out how the casting pans out, there's one thing that a Ben Affleck Batman does signal: no more appearances by Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Robin John Blake.

Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises" concluded with Blake as the heir to Bruce Wayne's Bat-mantle, a development that would surely have led to a very interesting—and very different—status quo for Gotham City. But with Batman's fate now firmly tangled up with Superman's, a void has been created—one that filmmakers Woody Tondorf and Chris Landa hope to fill with "The Dark Knight Legacy."

The fan film has a teaser produced, one that shows off pretty high production values for a fanmade film. The clip also includes several notable Gothamites, most all of which were absent from Nolan's trilogy. The Red Hood, Penguin, Ventriloquist, and (get ready...

Machinima Carrying On The ‘Dark Knight Legacy’ With Batman Fan Film
Ever wondered what happens after Batman saves Gotham in The Dark Knight Rises? Enter Dark Knight Legacy - a new fan film answering that exact question. "Everyone wants to make a Batman movie,” said Woody Tondorf, co-writer and executive producer of Legacy. “But we wanted to tell a story about Batman's influence on other people, while still getting all the action and justice that Batman fans demand." Similar to Batman’s influence, Christopher Nolan’s beloved trilogy ending has created an opportunity for fans to create new adventures for the famous Caped Crusader. Taking place one year after Dark Knight Rises, Dark Knight Legacy follows “Robin” John Blake (Daniel Vincent Gordh) as he prepares to take up Batman’s role as Gotham’s protector, only for the Red Hood (Maury Sterling), a mysterious figure from Bruce Wayne’s past, to appear and challenge him for the mantle of “The Batman...

"Dark Knight Legacy is a fan film set one year after the Dark Knight Rises, following "Robin" John Blake's heroic journey to protect the symbol of Batman from the lethal, relentless attacks of a masked vigilante known only as the Red Hood." I liked that a lot..the dude playing 'Nightwing' (Daniel Vincent Gordh) even sounds just like Joseph Gordon Levitt! Anyway, if you also like what you see you can help fund the entire series so the complete story can be told. Make a donation here at Indiegogo.

Pride and Prejudice at 200: the best Jane Austen small-screen adaptations
Forget Oscar-tipped films and lush BBC dramatisations – the Lizzie Bennet Diaries is an addictive bi-weekly retelling of Pride and Prejudice for the web generation

Jane Austen has been providing us with Sunday-evening viewing fodder ever since someone had the ratings-winning idea of putting gowns and tight breeches on primetime TV. But as Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy celebrate their 200th anniversary of appearing in print, the best Austen adaptation around at the moment isn't an Oscar-tipped film or a lush BBC dramatisation – it's a series of 10-minute YouTube videos, with accompanying in-character tweets. And it's modern-day. And American.

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries calls itself an "innovative, original episodic video and social media series produced for the web". Actually, it's an addictive bi-weekly retelling of Pride and Prejudice, in which Darcy is a hipster, Lizzie is a beleaguered grad student and her mother is just as desperate to get her married off as in the original.

[DVD Review] Night Watcher
Night Watcher is one of those independent horror flicks Lionsgate picked up as of late. I think it upset me a bunch, really. Mainly because it represents a missed opportunity for something that might really stand out. Intercut with some of the most tedious and underwhelming stalking sequences I’ve seen in a while are moments of drama that honestly touched me. The human story in Night Watcher is way better than anything about it the title might suggest, but it’s just such a shame that it’s squandered on a horrid reveal, bewildering technical screw-ups and an infuriating final shot.

First, that reveal I was talking about. I would think that a film possessing such a unique and captivating visual style as Night Watcher would pride itself on its ability to tell a story though images. For a while, it really does well there, but when it comes time to reveal whodunit,...

Lionsgate's Post Halloween DVD Horrors
With the titles of the Ghosthouse Underground label filling up the majority of their October horror DVD slate, November brings us Lionsgate's sloppy seconds. I mean, a horror movie getting dumped onto DVD a week or two after Halloween strikes me as an afterthought on the distributor's part. Lionsgate has three such chillers getting the post-Halloween DVD mistreatment.

First up, on November 3rd, is The Beast Within - no relation to the notorious 1982 creature feature about a woman raped by a monster who gives birth to a son that as a teenager transforms into a giant cicada creature. This Beast Within is actually a retitling of a German film originally called Virus Undead from director Wolf Wolff (haven't heard a name like that since Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever director Kaos) about a strain of avian flu that turns victims into zombies.

"Robert is driving with two friends to his hometown,...
