“English Teacher,” one of the buzziest comedies of the 2024 television season, will officially be coming back for Season 2. The 10-episode installment is expected to premiere in 2025.
“‘English Teacher’ was one of the most critically acclaimed new shows of 2024 and we are grateful to the producers, writers, cast, directors and crew for the show’s creative excellence,” Nick Grad, president of FX Entertainment, said in a Friday statement. “We look forward to the new season.”
Created by Brian Jordan Alvarez, “English Teacher” follows Evan Marquez, a high school teacher in Austin, Texas. Most of the series revolves around Evan grandstanding, often about his liberal beliefs, only to be defeated time and time again by his own ego and short-sightedness. As he navigates his relationships with his friends, co-workers, students and on-again, off-again boyfriend, the series asks, “Can you really be your full self at your job?”

With critical and fan favorites like The White Lotus, Stranger Things, and Severance not set to make their return until next year, 2024 was notable for its abundance of new shows. The vast majority of our list of the best TV shows of the year is composed of fresh properties or limited series: Netflix delivered one-off psychosexual thrills with Richard Gadd’s Baby Reindeer and the more understated neo-noir Ripley, while HBO and FX struck queer comedy gold with the surrealist Fantasmas and the more conventionally sitcom-styled English Teacher, respectively.
Of course, 2024 saw a few holdovers from previous years, two of which—The Bear and True Detective—met with mixed reactions from audiences but rewarded patient observers with their weighty takes on family, community, and the nature of being. And, in its third season, Hacks continued to deftly balance comedy and drama. Next year’s new and returning shows should consider the bar raised.

Created by and starring Brian Jordan Alvarez, English Teacher premiered on FX on Monday, September 2. Season 1 consists of eight thirty-minute episodes and follows Evan Marquez, a teacher in Texas who "finds himself at the intersection of the personal, professional, and political aspects of working at a high school." In addition to Alvarez, the main cast includes Stephanie Koenig, Sean Patton, Enrico Colantoni, Carmen Christopher, and Jordan Firstman.
Koenig plays Gwen Sanders, an optimistic history teacher at Morrison-Hensley High who tends to see the best in people, even when she shouldn't. The actor starred in Apple TV+'s Emmy-nominated series Lessons in Chemistry alongside Brie Larson and has also been featured in projects such as Sick Girl, The Offer, and The Flight Attendant. While English Teacher is yet to be renewed for a second season, the cast remains optimistic about the show's return.

Stephanie Koenig always knew one aspect of “English Teacher” would work. The FX comedy was created by her Bff Brian Jordan Alvarez, who stars as Evan Marquez, a gay high school English teacher in Austin, Texas. Koenig, who also serves as a writer and story editor, plays Gwen Sanders, Evan’s Bff and a history teacher. “I’d work with Brian previously, so I knew that was going to feel lived-in,” she tells Gold Derby. “We already had chemistry. We’re best friends in real life.”
What surprised her, however, was the immediate chemistry they had with the rest of the cast: Enrico Colantoni, who plays Grant, the principal; Sean Patton, who plays Markie, the gym teacher; and Carmen Christopher, who plays Rick, the counselor. “It was like, ‘Wait, you guys all…'” she continues. “It just felt very lived-in from the start. The devil works hard, but Brian Jordan Alvarez works harder. For the past month, the creator, writer, director, and star of “English Teacher” has been dining out on the “I Love Your Daughter” meme to promote the FX comedy. The TikTok trend started in September after a user posted a clip from a Season 2 episode of “Gilmore Girls.” In it, Kirk (Sean Gunn), who has made a black-and-white short film, tells his girlfriend’s father, “I love your daughter.” When the father asks what he has to offer, Kirk says, “Nothing. Only this,” and proceeds to awkwardly dance. The sequence in the episode is set to Melle Mel‘s “White Lines (Don’t Do It),” but the TikTok edit swaps it out for Olly Alexander‘s “Breathe.”

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for English Teacher Season 1, Episode 8, “Birthday.”] FX‘s English Teacher has been a comedic gem this fall, and although the final bell has rung on Season 1, star Stephanie Koenig has high hopes for the return of Gwen Sanders and the rest of her high school colleagues in the Austin, Texas-set series. Gwen had quite the finale episode moment. A breakup with her boyfriend led to a hilariously unhinged musical performance at a bar where she and coworkers were hosting a surprise birthday party for her best friend Evan (Brian Jordan Alvarez). TV Insider caught up with the star to discuss Gwen’s moment in the spotlight, including whether or not her tune was improvised. Plus, she’s digging into thoughts and feelings about the potential romance between Gwen and the school coach with a heart of gold, Markie (Sean Patton), whose crush was further defined and revealed to Evan in Episode 8’s final moments.

It’s rare for a freshman comedy to find its footing as quickly as “English Teacher” has. Once that rhythm is found, it’s even rarer for a series to completely challenge that difficult-to-establish flow.
Yet that’s what Brian Jordan Alvarez’s FX comedy does just five episodes in thanks to “Field Trip,” an episode that explores Evan’s (Alvarez) relationship with his best friend, Gwen (Stephanie Koenig).
“I was really excited and eager [for the episode], mainly because I want to give her depth,” Koenig told TheWrap. “[Gwen] is very positive and tries to see the good in things. But she’s also a person who isn’t at all perfect and gets sad,” Koenig said. “Also, Evan is like her favorite, favorite person. So if there’s any sort of trouble within that relationship, it’s like a bomb went off. It’s just nice to see that she’s a real person.

Hulu's new comedy series, English Teacher, is the perfect replacement for Glenn Howerton's A.P. Bio. English Teacher follows Evan Marquez (Brian Jordan Alvarez) who navigates teaching high school English while balancing various personal and professional issues. Some of these issues are created or exacerbated by Evan's colleagues, including his best friend, Gwen Sanders (Stephanie Koenig), the conflict-averse Principal Grant Moretti (Enrico Colantoni), and the eccentric gym teacher, Markie Hillridge (Sean Patton). With the series' 97% Rotten Tomatoes score, it has been well-received.
While English Teacher is just beginning its comedic story that unfolds in a high school setting, A.P. Bio has already aired four seasons. The first two seasons aired on NBC, leading to the series' first cancelation, before being revived for two additional seasons that streamed on Peacock. While there are key differences between English Teacher and A.P. Bio, Hulu's new comedy series is reminiscent of A.

Monday’s episode of FX’s English Teacher started with a literal bang — a deep, echoing gunshot heard by creator Brian Jordan Alvarez’s titular English teacher (first name Evan) as he walked to meet his classroom of students. Evan throws his hot coffee across his dress shirt and falls to the floor in a truncated attempt at crawling, then grabs two students from the hallway and ushers them to safety in a nearby classroom.
Evan is panicked, but the kids are unimpressed — apathetic, even —and tell him that the sound was not actually reason for emergency, but rather the standard proceedings of Markie (Sean Patton) the gym teacher’s student gun club.
The setup feels serious as these sentences come together, but there’s something about the pacing of its events that maintain the comedy’s lightheartedness; the audience knows they’re supposed to laugh, even before they know everyone is safe.

Brian Jordan Alvarez is one of the most interesting voices in comedy. The general public likely recognizes him as Estéfan in "Will & Grace," Wesley in "Jane the Virgin," or Cole in "M3GAN," but real ones know that he's the brilliant mind behind the Gotham Award-nominated five-part web comedy series "The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo" ... and, if you've spent any time on TikTok, his hit viral universe of filterface characters like Tj Mack. Now, Alvarez serves as the creator, executive producer, and star of the FX workplace comedy "English Teacher," the best new comedy of 2024 and the rare show that manages to tackle Gen Z without sounding like it was written by a bunch of dinosaurs who still ask their nephews to help them open PDFs.

English Teacher, a new sitcom with a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes, has become a hit on streaming after just two episodes. The show hails from Brian Jordan Alvarez, the creator and executive producer, who viewers may recognize for his roles in shows like Jane the Virgin and the rebooted Will & Grace. He's also appeared in films such as 80 for Brady and the hit horror-comedy M3GAN. But with his new series, Alvarez is stepping into the lead role in an interesting way.
New data from Reelgood reveals that English Teacher is already making an impression on the streaming charts. Saddle up, y’all, Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses” is finally back in action.
After earning nine Emmy nominations for its excellent third season, including one for Best Drama Series and acting bids for Gary Oldman, Jack Lowden and Jonathan Pryce, the darkly comedic espionage thriller about MI5’s worst spies returns this week with its most personal outing yet.
In the new season, the first episode of which is now streaming, River (Lowden) finds himself caught in the crosshairs after his grandfather (Pryce), a former high-ranking member of the intelligence service who is now in the early stages of dementia, is attacked by an assailant impersonating River. As the younger Cartwright and the rest of Slough House attempt to get to the bottom of this latest mess, numerous personal and professional secrets are revealed that threaten not just our beloved, screwed-up heroes, but the whole of MI5 as well.

Evan Marquez (Brian Jordan Alvarez) is going through it.
The high school English teacher in suburban Texas recently broke up with boyfriend Malcolm (Jordan Firstman), is under investigation by the school board for kissing him in front of students, doesn’t want to be a local queer hero, and is also expressly forbidden from dating fellow teachers, like handsome new hire Harry (Langston Kerman).
FX’s latest comedy stays true to its genre, with laugh-out-loud dialogue, casually outrageous characters, and scenarios that could be out of the sitcom handbook on the surface, but get sharpened to a 2024 clip by Alvarez and fellow writers Stephanie Koenig, Jake Bender, Zach Dunn, and Dave King. Jokes fly so fast that they could be improvised, setting the bar from the very first scene for a show bursting with humor even when the plot goes off course.

Hear that bell? Yes, FX is taking us back to school with the new comedy English Teacher.
Monday’s premiere introduces us to Evan, played by star and series creator Brian Jordan Alvarez, who grooves to the ’80s classic “Maniac” before heading into work (late) as a teacher at an Austin high school. He marvels to his colleague Gwen (Stephanie Koenig) at lunch that his students are “not into being woke anymore.” (“They’re saying the R-word again,” Gwen notes.) Gym teacher Markie (Sean Patton) then launches into a rant against Communist China, but they loudly remind him, “No politics!

When Paul Simms, the executive producer behind such comedy hits as “Atlanta” and “What We Do in the Shadows,” first stumbled upon Brian Jordan Alvarez, he wasn’t looking for a new show. Instead, he was wasting time on Twitter when he noticed someone mention the web series “The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo.”
“I clicked on it because I had nothing else to do,” Simms told TheWrap. “I was like, ‘This guy is really funny.'” That social media rabbit hole led to Simms meeting Alvarez and — ultimately — FX greenlighting its latest buzzy comedy series, “English Teacher.”
Created by and starring Alvarez alongside his longtime comedy partner Stephanie Koenig, “English Teacher” follows the life of Evan Marquez, an openly gay teacher in Austin, Texas. At his core, Evan wants to be a principled person. But between demanding parents, confusing teenagers and his own foibles, those admirable goals...

The English language is a powerful tool. To wit, the phrase “high school” can evoke a myriad of responses depending upon who reads them. For actual young adults, it’s the recognition pressures — social, societal, educational — of their current reality. For the teachers, it’s an understanding they’re helping to shape young minds at a critical stage. For parents, it’s a desire to have some level of control and influence before their kids go off to define themselves. For those in their 30s, it’s a time from long ago that we’re likely not keen to return to or think about in any capacity. In short, it’s a rich text full of contradictions to explore in a television show.

If there’s one complaint to be made about English Teacher, it’s that there simply isn’t enough of it. The show’s first season comprises just eight 20ish-minute installments — which, in fairness, is well in line with the likes of other FX comedies like What We Do in the Shadows or Dave or The Bear (setting aside whether that last one is really a “comedy” at all).
And yet I couldn’t help feeling that in this case, it wasn’t quite enough. Because with such a sharp ensemble, smart perspective and finely honed sense of humor right out the gate, this one feels built to keep going — toward a broadcast-standard 22-episode season, even, hopefully for years and years. This, to be sure, is a great problem for a freshman series to have. If its initial brevity means English Teacher currently demonstrates more potential than it actually has the time to fulfill,...

Exclusive: This Joka, a stand-up comedy series exec produced by Will Smith, will not be returning for a second season on Roku.
The streaming service launched the series, which came via its acquisition of short-form service Quibi, in March.
The series features a raft of stand ups including Punkie Johnson and Chris Estrada.
Deadline understands that the decision had nothing to do with the Oscars incident, where Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage, but a somewhat unusual issue with timing.
Roku is believed to never really have had the option to renew the series, which is produced by Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Westbrook Studios and Topgolf Entertainment Group. The option to renew lapsed before Roku launched the show, and certainly before the streamer had the chance to analyse its viewing data, meaning that it was unlikely to return for a second season on the platform.
