Horror streaming service Screambox is diving headfirst into April with a line-up that refuses to play it safe. From long-lost slasher oddities and surrealist nightmares to new exclusives and unclassifiable cult gems, the horror streaming platform continues to double down on bold, brutal, and bizarre content. With Project Mkhexe, The Coffee Table and the notorious R-rated cut of Tammy and the T-Rex all making their mark, this month’s selections are tailored to viewers with a taste for the unexpected.
Perhaps the most talked-about addition is The Coffee Table, the Spanish black comedy that’s already earned a fearsome reputation from early festival runs. Directed by Caye Casas, the film delivers a harrowing domestic spiral that defies genre convention. It begins with a petty marital squabble over furniture and ends in an act so bleak that Stephen King himself called it, “horrible and also horribly funny.” Hitting Screambox on 11 April,...

Stephen King is the source of many of modern horror's most powerful stories, but he is also an excellent bellwether for exciting developments in the genre world. One of his recent recommendations challenges hardcore fright fans to test their mettle: Caye Casas's taboo-smashing The Coffee Table has traumatized audiences the world over, and now this horrifying sensation is available on Shudder.
This pitch-black Spanish comedy concerns a pair of new parents who purchase a divisive piece of furniture that changes their lives in ways they could never have imagined. The film has also changed the lives of many unwitting audience members, who never saw anything as boundary-pushing — or as bizarrely funny — as this low-budget, high-tension horror-comedy. Those who won't take Stephen King's word for it can read on to find out what all the fuss is about, before plunging into the shocking experience of The Coffee Table.

Sony Taking Japanese Format ‘100 Choices’ To London TV Screenings
Sony Pictures Television (Spt) is taking Japanese format 100 Choices to the London TV Screenings. Fany Studio’s show in which contestants are faced with one question but 100 possible answers first piloted in October 2023 before being picked up by Spt at the Asia TV Forum & Market. As well as distributing the format internationally, in countries where Spt has a non-fiction production company, the format will be repped by Stellify (UK), B17 Entertainment (U.S.), Curio (Australia), Teleset (Mexico) and Floresta (Brazil). In 100 Choices, contestants are faced with the 100 answers and if they can answer correctly, they win a large cash prize. The questions are nearly impossible to answer, so the contestants take on five physical challenges that allow them to eliminate some of the 100 potential choices based on their performance in each challenge. One of the scariest "non-horror" horror films of the 2020s is heading to streaming. The Coffee Table, from director Caye Casas, who co-wrote this twisted monster of a horror, thriller, black comedy with Cris Borobia, will stream on Shudder starting February 24, giving genre fans one more reason to pay for the horror-exclusive platform. A Spanish production, The Coffee Table was released in 2022 on the festival circuit, but it didn't get too much attention at the time. The director even planned to distribute it himself outside Spain, where his movie went on a very limited theatrical run. It wasn't until seminal horror author Stephen Kingpraised the film on X, formerly known as Twitter, that Casas' film gained the notoriety it deserved.
King's post (which can't be seen anymore since the horror author recently decided to leave the social media platform) read, "There's a Spanish movie called The Coffee Table on Amazon...

The solo feature directing debut of Spanish filmmaker Caye Casas, the horror comedy The Coffee Table (a.k.a. La mesita del comedor) was made in 2022 and got a lot of attention as it made its way around the world earlier this year, with JoBlo’s own Alex Maidy giving it an 8/10 review that can be read at This Link and legendary author Stephen King recommending it to his fans and followers by writing, “My guess is you have never, not once in your whole life, seen a movie as black as this one. It’s horrible and also horribly funny. Think the Coen Brothers’ darkest dream.” Now, Casas has revealed that The Coffee Table is getting a Turkish remake, titled Cam Sehpa, from director Can Evrenol!

It should be no surprise that, as another year winds to a close, horror continued to dominate in 2024. Terrifier 3, for example, became the highest-grossing Unrated movie in box office history, throwing all the indie cinema rules out the window in the process. Longlegs caught everyone off guard, becoming Neon‘s highest-grossing film upon release in July, and streaming service Mubi smartly acquired the body horror movie The Substance, where it became the platform’s highest-grossing film at the box office.
That doesn’t even touch on the huge studio earners like Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, or Alien: Romulus. Yet the surprises extend well beyond how well horror performed at the box office; 2024 horror is defined by the way it refused to stay within its tidy genre bounds.

Caye Casas’s The Coffee Table delivered on of the darkest, pitch black horror comedies of the year that even shocked Stephen King. Casas revealed today that a Turkish remake of his macabre feature is now in production, with Baskin director Can Evrenol at the helm.
Casas broke the news on social media, revealing that the remake is currently titled Cam Sehpa.
The Coffee Table “follows Jesus and Maria, a couple going through a difficult time in their relationship. Nevertheless, they have just become parents. To shape their new life, they decide to buy a new coffee table. A decision that will change their existence.”
David Pareja and Estefanía de los Santos star as the ill-fated couple, with Josep Riera, Claudia Riera, and Eduardo Antuña rounding out the cast.

Fresh off this year’s The Coffee Table, one of the most downright shocking horror movies in years (and Stephen King agrees), director Caye Casas is now in development on a brand new movie. According to a report from Variety today, it’s titled El Show del Gran Luciferio.
The outlet notes that the upcoming genre film is “now in development and headed to the Sanfic Int’l Film Festival after being selected for this year’s Morbido Lab tutelage program.”
The website details, “The plot centers on the eccentric Luciferio, a game show host who pits contestants against each other in over-the-top trials to appease a rapt audience.
“As the show progresses, the games grow more barbaric as the adulation for the savage host drives increasing fury.”
Casas explains, “What are we capable of doing for money? We all have a price according to our personality, our circumstances and our ambitions.

The latest from horror virtuoso Caye Casas, “El Show del Gran Luciferio,” is now in development and headed to the Sanfic Int’l Film Festival after being selected for this year’s Morbido Lab tutelage program.
Promising to deliver a titillating and freshly devious narrative steeped in nostalgia, the dark and acerbic horror concept is produced by industry heavyweights Norbert Llaràs at his Barcelona-based Alhena Production (“The Coffee Table”) and Albert Pons, co-founder of Mexico’s Pulsar Films.
“The script for this project was the first thing I read by Caye, long before the shorts ‘Nothing C.O.’ and ‘Rip,’ and feature films ‘Killing God’ and ‘The Coffee Table,’ but it’s a script that’s always haunted me. When I read it, I was completely overcome by the brutality and strength of the proposal. It’s written in a totally unorthodox but one hundred percent genuine way,” Llaràs, a longtime Casas producer,...

Titles from Caye Casas, whose jarring film “The Coffee Table” earned a nod from Stephen King, and a comeback project from former Eli Roth co-scribe Guillermo Amoedo (“The Inhabitant”), figure into a six-title slate for the fifth edition of the Santiago Int’l Film Festival’s Morbido Lab.
According to Sanfic co-founder Gabriela Sandoval, the competition was tight this year as the strand “had many more applications than in 2023.”
Morbido founder and CEO Pablo Guisa Koestinger will be on the ground to advise the talent, both established and budding, leading them towards full development and financing for their chilling projects. Horror has many subgenres. Perhaps you like slashers, creature features, or stories of demonic possession. If you like your horror painted red, there are splatter films like Ichi the Killer, Hostel, and the Saw franchise to satisfy your bloodthirst. Sometimes, however, horror goes even darker, with tales so gory and twisted that you can't believe someone actually thought it up and was allowed to make it. Cannibal Holocaust, Sal, or the 120 Days of Sodom, and A Serbian Film are near sadistic in their intensity, and can only be withstood by the most hardcore of fans. There is now a new member to this gruesome club with the Spanish film The Coffee Table. Co-written with Cristina Borobia and directed by Caye Casas, The Coffee Table isn't a movie with a high body count, lots of intense gore, or physical torture. No, Casas does something more frightening by torturing our minds until...

Plot: Unspeakable horror meets the blackest of black comedy. To celebrate the birth of their baby, a bickering couple buys a coffee table. Guaranteed to bring happiness to their family by the smarmy salesman, the couple instead find nothing but horror with this furniture and all without ghosts, monsters or possessions, just a tacky coffee table.

Horror fans looking to test their mettle should take note of director Caye Casas‘s The Coffee Table. Horror master Stephen King recently said of the pitch-black tragicomedy, “My guess is you have never, not once in your whole life, seen a movie as black as this one. It’s horrible and also horribly funny.”
That sums up this grim movie well, with King’s recommendation worth taking.
In a press release, Casas said, “We wanted to make one of the cruelest films ever made, one that people cannot forget. It will make them feel very strong emotions, real terror without monsters, zombies, ghosts or murderers, only with a dining room table and the cruelest fate that you can imagine.”
The filmmaker, who co-wrote the film with Cristina Borobia, isn’t downplaying the cruelty.
The film “follows Jesus and Maria, a couple going through a difficult time in their relationship.

Caye Casas’s second feature is audacious and sharp, but the shifts between acidic comedy of manners and humour-free horror are grating
Exhausted new parents Jesús (David Pareja) and María (Estefanía de los Santos) are looking for something to tie their front room together. But in the furniture shop, when an unctuous salesman (Eduardo Antuña) suggests the “famous” Rörret coffee table – glass top, held aloft by two golden nymphs, a snip at €1,099 – old tensions emerge. Jesús is smitten; María thinks it’s a tacky abomination. She gets to choose everything, he says – even forcing him to have kids, and also dictating their son’s name, Cayetano. “A shoddy name for a fascist bullfighter,” he says. Every year, one or two movies arrive with a certain kind of hype that basically involves people puking, fainting, or leaving the theater in horror. More often than not, these movies turn out to be disappointing. Not that all of these are bad, but they definitely fail to live up to that hype. The Spanish horror-comedy The Coffee Table is the latest movie to come with such hype; in fact, even the likes of Stephen King have lauded it by using terms like “Coen brothers’ dark dream.” Letterboxd is flooded with reviews that are saying what a terribly difficult, anxiety-inducing watch this movie is. Well, here’s the thing: The Coffee Table, directed by Caye Casas, is indeed what people say. You’ve got no idea what’s coming for you until you actually watch it. Stephen King praised Spanish horror film The Coffee Table as "horrible and horribly funny." The movie follows a couple who purchase a cursed coffee table, leading to tragic consequences. While dark and disturbing, The Coffee Table delivers authentic performances and has gained praise.

As someone who has been in the game for the last 50 years, and has had more than 50 of his stories turned into movies, King has more than deserved his right to comment on both the good and the bad. He was recently at it again, this time offering praise to a film thats mostly flown under the radar in the mainstream, that being the little know Spanish horror gem, The Coffee Table.

What if opening a suspicious email attachment didn’t just mess up your computer; it manipulated reality itself? Such is the premise of the latest Dust short film, Signal Dark.
“Signal Dark is a Dust short film from Silver Edge Studios. Lucas Anderson is an insular It technician whose life is turned upside down when he stumbles across a mysterious email and its reality bending contents.”
Audiences can’t seem to get enough of Zendaya on the big screen, and her performance in Challengers takes her star power to another level.
“[Zendaya] has been executing her own Tashi-esque world domination. So far, she’s moved from kids’ TV star to being a part of some of the biggest movies on the planet… With Challengers, though, she’s about to go supernova, firing up in more ways than one to become the hottest talent in Hollywood. In Luca Guadagnino’s erotically-charged drama,...

There is no other horror film you’ll see this year as incessantly cruel and mean-spirited as The Coffee Table. This is both a compliment and a criticism, as, while the film is plenty committed to twisting the knife into its audience, it can also be rather repetitive before rushing to the finish. However, it is also painfully effective at making you feel sick to your stomach for nearly 90 minutes straight. Imagine the ill-fated drive in Hereditary was stretched to a feature, and you’ll start to get a sense of what’s in store for what feels destined to be one of 2024’s more disturbing horror films. Sure, there are plenty of gloriously bloody visions in upcoming works like In a Violent Nature or Cuckoo. Hell, even fantastical supernatural films like Oddity get incredibly dark before they tear you to pieces. The thing is that all of these films...

“No Me Sigas,” the directorial debut of “Anything’s Possible” writer Ximena García Lecuona, and “Malamuerte,” from Caye Casas, a rising star of pitch black Spanish comedy, both feature in a rich and far-ranging 2023 Blood Window Lab, the project platform of Ventana Sur’s genre forum, which unspools Nov. 27-Dec. 1.
The projects are joined by other buzz titles such as “Into the Spiral,” from Facundo Escudero Salinas, whose thriller, “Broken,” ranks as one of the top 10 most watched Argentine films of 2023.
Also anticipated is “Planet, billed as “a vast depiction of unprecedented worldwide alien contact, exploring different cultures and societal classes through their experiences with the phenomenon,” and directed by Fredrik S. Hana, a 2022 Meliès d’Or Award for “From.Beyond.”
The projects form part of 22 titles as submissions are up 20% this year on last, notes Javier Fernández, head of the Blood Window Program.

"Buying that coffee table was the single worst decision I've ever made."
Caye Casas made a fantastic debut in 2017 as co-director of "Killing God," a hilariously dark comedy about messed-up family dynamics and a world-ending proposal. Now, he is really focusing on the dark part of dark comedy for his solo directorial debut in "The Coffee Table," a movie best watched as blind as humanly possible — if you even dare experience it. This is one of the bleakest, meanest, most unbearably cruel movies you could ever see, yet it is so uncomfortable and awkward you can't help but laugh in a maniacal way that might give you more than a few looks from those around you (if they're not laughing themselves). "The Coffee Table" is the anti-schadenfreude movie, one that gives you so much unpleasant misfortune you cannot possibly find it funny ... until you do.

A trend for horror anthologies is emerging from the competing titles in this year’s Sitges Pitchbox event, as organizers Filmmarket Hub and the Sitges Film Festival announce this year’s line up.
And, as the movie project showcase opens up its doors to series for the first time, it’s buzzy titles such as “R.I.P “ and “Mr Ray” which appear to be embracing the anthology format.
Developed during a 2019 Manhattan Institute Film Workshop “Mr Ray” is created by Antoine Bours – a series creator on Belgian-French scripted crime series “Ennemi Public” (“Public Enemy”).
Pitching itself as “Penny Dreadful” meets Tim Burton’s “Big Fish,” the series is described as “a love letter to the anthology series” and a tribute to one of its pioneers, the early twentieth century Belgian horror writer Jean Ray.
