Scream 7 started filming at the start of January, and we’ve seen some surprising reports about the slasher sequel as it has made its way through production – with the most surprising and strange news being that Matthew Lillard and Scott Foley, who played Ghostface killers who were killed off in Scream (1996) and Scream 3, respectively, and David Arquette, whose beloved character Dewey lost his life in Scream (2022), are all in the cast. During an appearance on Good Morning America, Foley admitted that, like many Scream fans, he isn’t sure how his return actually works.

Foley said, with thanks to Deadline for the transcription, “I don’t know how it works out. Spoiler alert! 25 years ago I was the killer in Scream 3 and he was brutally taken to town and killed. And now I’m back in Scream 7 and I’m not sure how it’s going to work.

Ghostface will have his/her choice of characters to question about their favorite scary movies when Scream 7 finally hits theaters in February 2026. Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott and Courteney Cox’s Gale Weathers are the only two living survivors from director Wes Craven’s 1996 film returning. However, Woodsboro’s masked serial killer will come up against plenty of new blood, too, including the film's newest addition, Landman and 1923’sfan-favorite star, Michelle Randolph.

It’s unclear who Randolph will portray in the latest Scream installment, but she will be rubbing elbows with some of the horror franchise’s crème de la crème. Deadline reports that the actress is set to re-team with Radio Silence duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who directed Newton previously in last year's vampire horror film Abigail. Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett also directed Ready or Not and other popular recent horror movies like Scream 5 and Scream 6.

Released in 2019, the first Ready or Not was an absolute blast of a movie. It did very well at the box office, grossing over $57.6 million on a $6 million budget and it was heavily praised by critics and audiences alike. Ready or Not helped catapult Weaving into the realm of modern-day scream queens and she's appeared in several since (including getting the coveted opening kill in Scream 6). Next she'll star in the comedy thriller Borderline with Ray Nicholson.

Kathryn Newton exploded to new levels of stardom two years ago when she teamed up with Paul Rudd for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and now she’s just been tapped for a role in another major project. Deadline reports that Newton has joined Samara Weaving in the cast of Ready or Not 2, the sequel to the 2019 horror thriller starring Adam Brody and Mark O’Brien. A couple of weeks ago, Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures made a surprising casting announcement, revealing that Scott Foley, who played the Ghostface killer in Scream 3, is returning for Scream 7, even though his character was killed off. That was quickly followed by another surprising announcement: Matthew Lillard, who was a Ghostface killer in the original Scream and also appeared to be killed off, will also be appearing in Scream 7. Now, their co-star Mason Gooding has said in an interview that Foley and Lillard are bringing “something special” to the film, and Foley and another co-star Mark Consuelos, took a moment to discuss being set up in the same hotel during an interview on Live with Kelly and Mark. Representation for women in leading or co-lead roles hit a record high in the top-grossing films of 2024, while opportunities for people of color took a sharp decline.

For the first time since Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative began evaluating each year’s 100 top-grossing films, gender equality has been reached — with 54 films featuring a woman or girl in a lead or co-lead role.

According to the study, authored by Katherine L. Neff, Smith and Dr. Katherine Pieper, the percentage of girls and women as protagonists was at an all-time high (54%) — up from 30% in 2023 and more than double what was first reported in 2007 (20%). This figure not only reached but exceeded proportional representation with the U.S. population (50.4%).

Radio Silence, the horror filmmaking banner known for reviving the Scream franchise, has signed with CAA.

Radio Silence, comprised of directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, most recently directed Universal’s 2024 vampire thriller Abigail. Producer Chad Villella is no longer with the outfit.

Skeet Ulrich, one of the stars of Wes Craven's groundbreaking slasher film of 1996, Scream, revealed that the beloved horror movie was in danger of being canceled during the first days of production, and it was all because of what Craven decided to do with the extremely violent opening sequence. Per People Magazine, Ulrich showed up at Mega Con 2025 in Orlando, and he spoke about the franchise. During a panel for Scream, the actor confirmed that the opening of the film featuring Drew Barrymore being sliced and diced by Ghostface was not well-received by producers. Apparently, they did not want to continue making the film "two weeks into filming," and director Wes Craven had to seek the support of others at Miramax Films:

Hollywood icon Matthew Lillard gets a warm welcome back to the world of Screamfrom original co-star Skeet Ulrich.

In a video posted to X/Twitter on February 7 by fan account Scream News, Lillard officially confirms his return to the Scream franchise during an appearance alongside co-star Skeet Ulrich at MegaCon. It's once again an exciting time to be a Ghostface fan, with Scream 7 finally entering production last month. There was a lot of behind-the-scenes shake-up in the lead up to the upcoming installment rolling its cameras. Scream VI is getting a Blu-ray 3D release in Germany on February 27 from Turbine Media.

Priced at €24.99 (about $26), it has reversible artwork but no special features. The English Dolby Atmos track is included in addition to a German dub.

The film was converted to 3D for its theatrical run by Dneg, whose work also includes Dune, Venom, Jurassic World Dominion, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Scream star Mason Gooding has shared some pretty exciting details about the new film in the franchise, Scream 7. While there have been discussions of returning stars and surprising additions, Gooding has addressed the gore element of the film: "Ghostface is absolutely the most brutal he's been."

Horror fans are likely drooling over Gooding's conversation with Variety during the premiere of his latest film, the Valentine's Day slasher Heart Eyes. The Scream franchise has taken some twists and turns in the last several years, and it's not all on-screen. Some of those twists involved real life, with both Neve Campbell and Melissa Barrera leaving and being fired, respectively, at different times for controversial reasons. Now, as Scream 7 looks to move on by going back to the past, with Campbell returning as Sidney Prescott, and Kevin Williamson coming back as both writer and director, January 30 brought two more shocks. Two former Ghostfaces are being resurrected as well, even though their characters were dead the last time we saw them. Both Matthew Lillard and Scott Foley are returning for Scream 7. It's understandable why some see this as a desperate act (even if it was nearly attempted before), but if done right, it's the best way to save a franchise in chaos.

The upcoming seventh film in the Scream franchise promises to be one for the books with several key figures from the franchise’s past set to return to the franchise. In fact, it seems like every week there is yet another unexpected casting announcement connected to the Spyglass and Paramount Pictures film.

Just last week, news broke that franchise vets Matthew Lillard and Scott Foley had both joined the cast in undisclosed roles. Both actors played iterations of Ghostface killers in the franchise with Lillard playing Stu Macher, one of the two Ghostface killers in the original Scream film way back in 1996, and Foley playing Roman Bridger, Sidney’s half-brother and the Ghostface killer in Scream 3.

Both characters seemingly met their makers in their respective films with Stu presumed dead after being stabbed multiple times and having a TV dropped on his head and Roman seemingly killed after taking a bullet to the head.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu has seemingly landed his next big role. Reportedly, he is on board to take the lead in a new feature film based on the hit video game Sleeping Dogs.

Per IGN, a feature film adaptation of Sleeping Dogs is now in development. The report follows Liu recently teasing on social media that he was collaborating with the rights-holds to get an adaptation of the hit game off the ground. Liu is said to be serving as a producer on the project in addition to starring in the lead role as Wei Shen, the protagonist from the game. Square Enix has not yet offered an official comment about the report.
