Not much is known about Scream 7 yet, and perhaps that's a good thing. Scream is a beloved horror comedy franchise built on satire, gore, and surprise slasher reveals at the end. So, part of the fun is having no clue what's happening before the movie starts, but sometimes the biggest teasers come with the cast list. It's no secret that the casting decisions for the Scream franchise have been messy in the past. The first issues arose with the franchise's original star, Neve Campbell, as she dropped out of 2023's Scream VI on less-than-happy terms over a payment dispute she deemed disrespectful.
The story went in a different direction, focusing entirely on Sam and Tara Carpenter, introduced in 2022's Scream. But, then, of course, near the end of November 2023, Scream 7's production company, Spyglass, fired Sam's actor, Melissa Barrera, and subsequently lost Tara's actor, Jenna Ortega, and its director,...

In 2022, Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media revived the Scream franchise with a new entry (the fifth) that was a box office hit, earning almost $139 million at the global box office. Fourteen months later, Scream VI came along – and became an even bigger hit, pulling in almost $169 million at the global box office, a number that was up there with the series’ heyday, when the first Scream and Scream 2 made just over $170 million. (Scream 3 also made over $160 million – only Scream 4 failed to crack $100 million.) So, of course, the companies are moving full steam ahead with Scream 7. While the movie seemed, initially, to be on the fast-track to success, the track it’s on has turned out to be a shockingly bumpy ride.

Scream 7 started filming at the start of January, and we’ve seen some surprising reports about the slasher sequel as it has made its way through production – with the most surprising and strange news being that Matthew Lillard and Scott Foley, who played Ghostface killers who were killed off in Scream (1996) and Scream 3, respectively, and David Arquette, whose beloved character Dewey lost his life in Scream (2022), are all in the cast. During an appearance on Good Morning America, Foley admitted that, like many Scream fans, he isn’t sure how his return actually works.
Foley said, with thanks to Deadline for the transcription, “I don’t know how it works out. Spoiler alert! 25 years ago I was the killer in Scream 3 and he was brutally taken to town and killed. And now I’m back in Scream 7 and I’m not sure how it’s going to work.

While thrilled about his return, Scott Foley admits he's still not sure how his Scream 7return is going to work. Plot details remain unclear for the latest installment in the slasher horror franchise, though the movie is set to be a more direct sequel to the Sidney Prescott-focused films, as everyone from Courteney Cox's Gale Weathers to David Arquette's Dewey Riley are returning alongside Neve Campbell. Scream 7 is also being helmed by Kevin Williamson, the creator of the series and scribe of the first two and fourth movies.
During a recent appearance on Good Morning Americato discuss his upcoming Will Trent season 3 appearance, Foley was asked about his upcoming Scream 7 return. The star quickly admitted to being unsure just how his return as former Ghostface killer Roman Bridger, even opening up the conversation to others so that "someone can explain it to me". Many villains have worn the Ghostface mask throughout the decades, and The Boys’ star Jack Quaid took a stab at it in 2022 when he played Richie in the legacy sequel, Scream. Although many characters (including some surprising ones) are returning for the upcoming Scream 7, you wouldn't think of Quaid as part of the returning cast. But if classic villains like Stu and Roman have found a way in, couldn't Richie also return? Well, Quaid has now provided the best "non-answer" to this question...

Ghostface will have his/her choice of characters to question about their favorite scary movies when Scream 7 finally hits theaters in February 2026. Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott and Courteney Cox’s Gale Weathers are the only two living survivors from director Wes Craven’s 1996 film returning. However, Woodsboro’s masked serial killer will come up against plenty of new blood, too, including the film's newest addition, Landman and 1923’sfan-favorite star, Michelle Randolph.
It’s unclear who Randolph will portray in the latest Scream installment, but she will be rubbing elbows with some of the horror franchise’s crème de la crème. In addition to Campbell and Cox, several other actors from earlier entries are returning for another go-round with Ghostface — even though their respective characters are presumably dead — more on that shortly.

Scream 7 is well into production, but that doesn’t mean a couple more potential victims (or killers) can’t be added to the cast, as Deadline reports that Michelle Randolph and Jimmy Tatro have signed on.
Randolph has been making big waves as the breakout star of Taylor Sheridan’s Landman, where she plays the daughter of Billy Bob Thornton’s character. She also has a main role in another Sheridan series, 1923. As for Tatro, he’s best known for American Vandal, The Real Bros of Simi Valley, and starring alongside Topher Grace in Home Economics.
The cast of Scream 7 is pretty packed, including plenty of characters from across the franchise. Like fellow feature-length filmmakers such as Mike Flanagan and Martin Scorsese, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (known collectively as Radio Silence) love a good repeat casting. The pair frequently sign on collaborators from previous projects, like Ready or Not’s Samara Weaving making a far-too-brief appearance in Scream VI or Scream and Scream VI’s Melissa Barrera popping into the duo’s follow-up vampire flick, Abigail. Now that the team is heading off to make the long-awaited Ready or Not sequel, we know that not only will Weaving reprise her leading role as Grace, but that Abigail alum, Kathryn Newton, will also join the cast.

Kathryn Newton is shining her scream queen crown as we speak, preparing to join Samara Weaving in the upcoming Ready or Not sequel!
Deadline reports that the actress is set to re-team with Radio Silence duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who directed Newton previously in last year's vampire horror film Abigail. Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett also directed Ready or Not and other popular recent horror movies like Scream 5 and Scream 6.
Released in 2019, the first Ready or Not was an absolute blast of a movie. It did very well at the box office, grossing over $57.6 million on a $6 million budget and it was heavily praised by critics and audiences alike. Ready or Not helped catapult Weaving into the realm of modern-day scream queens and she's appeared in several since (including getting the coveted opening kill in Scream 6). Next she'll star in the comedy thriller Borderline with Ray Nicholson.

Melissa Barrera has officially branched out into monster movies — but her first hit with a hairy beast isn't the violent slash-fest we've come to expect from the Screamstar. Rather, Your Monsteris an oddly heartwarming horror romance that, despite receiving a somewhat lukewarm reaction upon its theatrical debut in October 2024, is currently climbing the streaming charts over on Max.

David Arquette will reprise his role as Dewey Riley in Scream 7, despite the character’s death in Scream (2022). He joins Matthew Lillard and Scott Foley, both of whom also played characters previously killed in the franchise. The decision adds intrigue to the latest installment, though details on how these characters return remain undisclosed.
Arquette first portrayed Dewey in Scream (1996), playing the well-intentioned deputy sheriff of Woodsboro. Over the years, he became a survivor of multiple Ghostface attacks and a central figure in the franchise. His relationship with journalist Gale Weathers, played by Courteney Cox, was a key part of the series until Dewey was killed in the fifth film by Amber Freeman (Mikey Madison). The character’s demise was met with mixed reactions from longtime fans. Cox previously commented on the decision, saying, “Dewey is so loved by Scream fans. They have to figure it out.”
Lillard and Foley’s return raises further questions.

The theories about Scream 7 potentially becoming a super-meta New Nightmare-esque entry in the slasher franchise are starting to sound more and more likely. That, or Sidney Prescott being hounded by AI and deepfakes. Why do I say that? Because David Arquette has just joined the cast of Scream 7 as none other than Deputy Dewey Riley, a previous main character in the film series who was violently killed off in the fifth Scream.

It has been established in the Scream franchise that heroine Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) is married to a man named Mark, who viewers will be introduced to in the currently-filming Scream 7. Most fans assumed that her husband was Mark Kincaid, a character she met in Scream 3, where he was played by Patrick Dempsey. But Scream 7 has been filming since the start of January, and Dempsey is not in the movie. Instead, this film will reveal that Sidney’s husband is Mark Evans, played by Joel McHale (Community). Now, Dempsey has confirmed to Variety that he was in talks to reprise the role of Mark Kincaid in the new Scream sequel, but the scheduling didn’t work out.
Dempsey told Variety, “It just didn’t work out and we were dealing with the fires and everything that was going on and the schedule didn’t work out, unfortunately.

Patrick Dempsey made his debut in the Scream franchise in 2000's Scream 3. As a series of former actors are returning for the upcoming Scream 7, the actor was rumored to be among them.
However, Scream cast another Mark for Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott's husband, Joel McHale. Although Dempsey admitted in October 2024 that he had been approached for a role in Scream 7, the actor didn't end up reprising his role as Detective Mark Kincaid. Entertainment Weekly reports that Drew Barrymore revealed on her show that her daughters, Olive and Frankie, had recently watched Scream for the first time. Barrymore says she lets her children discover her movies whenever they feel interested and her pre-teen daughters surprised her one day. Barrymore explained, “They came home the other day and said they watched Scream, and they were like, ‘Mom, you got it so good in that movie! Oh my God!’”
Famously, Barrymore’s appearance was intended to shock the audience as the advertising suggested that she would’ve been a bigger part of the movie, only for the film to pull the rug out from under people and have her grisly killed off in the opening scene. The daytime talk show host said that they watched the Wes Craven film at a friend’s sleepover one night. She continued, “It’s just so fun that they...

‘Scream 7’ is one of the most highly awaited upcoming horrors. The movie had a difficult production so far. The movie was reworked after directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett left in August 2023, followed by the departure of stars Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega in November.
Neve Campbell confirmed her return to the franchise in March 2024 after missing ‘Scream VI.’ Kevin Williamson, a writer and producer from the early ‘Scream’ films, was brought on as director.
The plot is still a secret, but Neve Campbell revealed the new movie will focus on Sidney and her family, shifting back from the Carpenter sisters seen in ‘Scream’ released in 2022 and ‘Scream 6’ released in 2023.
We don’t have that much information regarding the production of the film but luckily, some new set photos have surfaced showcasing a first look at the latest Ghostface:

The action genre is widely popular, whether in theaters, streaming, or on TV. This is often proven in the Netflix charts, and Dylan Sprouse and Mason Gooding's latest action film doesn't disappoint.
Netflix has had a series of hit action original movies, including 2020's Extraction, 2021's Red Notice, which is Netflix's most popular film in the English language, and 2022's The Gray Man. However, not all films are Netflix originals, and Netflix has a lot of success with licensed action films, including Mission: Impossible, currently in the charts. Representation for women in leading or co-lead roles hit a record high in the top-grossing films of 2024, while opportunities for people of color took a sharp decline.
For the first time since Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative began evaluating each year’s 100 top-grossing films, gender equality has been reached — with 54 films featuring a woman or girl in a lead or co-lead role.
According to the study, authored by Katherine L. Neff, Smith and Dr. Katherine Pieper, the percentage of girls and women as protagonists was at an all-time high (54%) — up from 30% in 2023 and more than double what was first reported in 2007 (20%). This figure not only reached but exceeded proportional representation with the U.S. population (50.4%).

The Scream franchise has taken some twists and turns in the last several years, and it's not all on-screen. Some of those twists involved real life, with both Neve Campbell and Melissa Barrera leaving and being fired, respectively, at different times for controversial reasons. Now, as Scream 7 looks to move on by going back to the past, with Campbell returning as Sidney Prescott, and Kevin Williamson coming back as both writer and director, January 30 brought two more shocks. Two former Ghostfaces are being resurrected as well, even though their characters were dead the last time we saw them. Both Matthew Lillard and Scott Foley are returning for Scream 7. It's understandable why some see this as a desperate act (even if it was nearly attempted before), but if done right, it's the best way to save a franchise in chaos.

The upcoming seventh film in the Scream franchise promises to be one for the books with several key figures from the franchise’s past set to return to the franchise. In fact, it seems like every week there is yet another unexpected casting announcement connected to the Spyglass and Paramount Pictures film.
Just last week, news broke that franchise vets Matthew Lillard and Scott Foley had both joined the cast in undisclosed roles. Both actors played iterations of Ghostface killers in the franchise with Lillard playing Stu Macher, one of the two Ghostface killers in the original Scream film way back in 1996, and Foley playing Roman Bridger, Sidney’s half-brother and the Ghostface killer in Scream 3.
Both characters seemingly met their makers in their respective films with Stu presumed dead after being stabbed multiple times and having a TV dropped on his head and Roman seemingly killed after taking a bullet to the head.

Your Monster, a new romantic comedy by director-writer Caroline Lindy, began streaming on Max on January 24th. The independent film premiered at Sundance Film Festival and climbed to the top of Max's trending charts quickly, currently the fourth most popular movie this week.
